Waiting For The Mail That Never Comes! Social Action Committee I am bereft this week because I did not get the mail I was expecting. Weeks ago I filled out the paperwork which would allow me a postal vote in the British elections. While Sarah opened her envelope with glee, I was left to curse (under my breath, of course), the vagaries of the British postal system. Why was I so upset? Firstly, I still think of myself as British or English even though I love living in Las Vegas. The ability to vote in a general election is a symbol of my continued connection to those fair islands. However long I live in Vegas, London will always be my bayit, my home, on many levels. Secondly, the Jewish injunction, “Al tifrosh min ha’tzibur, don’t separate yourself from the community”. I have that ringing in my ears when election time comes around. Jews are commanded to engage and contribute, not run away or despair. We all have problems with politicians and their attitudes but that does not allow us to give up. There is nothing more stimulating than a nation engaged in a debate of ideas and values, of what she stands for. A national community, through the process of holding an election, presses a reset button every few years and checks in to see how it is doing. As Jews, we have to be part of that. Thirdly, I think of the morning blessing in our prayer book, “Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha’Olam, she’asani ben Chorin, Blessed are You, Adonai, Ruler of the Universe, who has made me free”. Any citizen of any democracy has a legally enshrined right to vote. This right should be universal but is not. In other words, there are plenty of citizens of other countries who would dearly love to contribute to their tzibur/community by participating in the electoral process but are unable. What a sweet way to celebrate freedom by participating in an election. So, I will harangue the mistaken office staff who cut me out of the electoral process. I will also urge all of you to vote, the next time an American election comes around, local or national. We can complain about all that is wrong in the world, but we also have a responsibility to do something about it, and voting is one part of that equation. Waiting For The Mail

That Never Comes!

Social Action Committee

I am bereft this week because I did not get the mail I was expecting. Weeks ago I filled out the paperwork which would allow me a postal vote in the British elections. While Sarah opened her envelope with glee, I was left to curse (under my breath, of course), the vagaries of the British postal system. Why was I so upset? election is a symbol of my continued connection to those fair islands. President’s Message

Thank you to all the congregants who were able to come to the annual

meeting. For those of you who had to miss this event here is a little taste of

what you missed. If you would like to hear it in full please contact me at the

office and we can set up an appointment.

It is my responsibility as your President to provide the congregation with

the state of our Temple. Let me begin by updating all of you on our three

main sources of revenue. The Shenker Academy 2014-15 school year began

with 78 students, and as of today we have 119 within our part time and

fulltime programs. Additionally, we have opened an infant program, and as

of March 2015. Shenker Academy now educates children ranging in age

from 6 weeks to 5 years. In our religious school, as of today, we have 110

students enrolled. We look forward to increasing this every year.

Fundraising is another main source of revenue for our temple. The annual Gala is the single biggest

event, which generates revenue. We have achieved four very successful years. Phil Scully has been

working tirelessly to achieve additional revenue through booking events, generating almost $20,000.00

since our Grand Opening to date.

Our last source of revenue is membership dues and tuition through the temple’s religious school and

Shenker Academy. The good news is that we have increased our membership to 356 families. This is

an increase of over 10% since July of last year.

The Board of Trustees and staff of Temple Sinai are entrusted by the members to efficiently utilize all

of your contributions and dues, and we do our very best to make every dollar count. Throughout the

previous year we have reduced salaries and increased accountability for all inventory and supplies

required to operate. Additionally, we have instituted checks and balances in regards to our Event

Center to ensure accountability for accounts payables and receivables. All of our efforts have transpired

at an unprecedented time of growth for Temple Sinai, and our growth has not come without some

growing pains and increase in overall operating costs due to the new campus.

Although we have made excellent strides in reducing our deficit through the previously mentioned

sources of income and increased accountability, we have not made enough progress to close the gap in

our efforts to operate Temple Sinai in the black. This should come as no surprise, because I have

continued to keep the congregation abreast of our financial status anytime I have addressed you within

the different forums and functions over the last year. Therefore, the Board has unanimously decided to

increase membership dues and school tuition, which includes the religious school, by fifteen percent in

an effort to close the deficit that we must reconcile.

As I close, on a personal note, it is and has been a true blessing to have been a part of, and served

Temple Sinai in many different capacities. This is where I have raised my family and have built strong,

close relationships that will last me forever. It has been a difficult year, for we have lost several

congregants that added so much love to our lives in this place of worship and joy. They all live in our

hearts for eternity and will never be forgotten. I could not be more proud than I am today serving as

your President of the best Temple in all of Las Vegas. Temple Sinai IS my family, and my home!

My door is always open.

Julie Ann Littmann

President

Nicholas Paul Basinger will be called to the Torah at Temple Sinai as a Bar Mitzvah on June 13, 2015 at 10am. Nick was born in Chicago and moved to Las Vegas with his parents and older brother An-drew when he was four years old. His really older brother, Josh, still lives in Chicago. Nick attends Sig Rogich Middle School where he is in the National Junior Honor Society. Last year, he was selected to participate in the Dawson College Bound Program, a high achieving academic enrichment summer program. He is looking forward to returning for his sec-ond summer in a few weeks as a Senior Bounder. In terms of extracurricular activities, Nick plays attack for the Rogich Rough Riders and Vegas Starz lacrosse teams. He is also an avid fan of TV sitcoms of the 1980’s. Like his brother Andrew (who had his Bar Mitz-vah at Temple Sinai in 2012), he is a skilled debater on how much practice is sufficient when it comes to pre-paring for one’s Bar Mitzvah. Nick’s extended family will be visiting from all over the country. Please join them in celebrating this joyous occa-sion. The Oneg will be sponsored by Nick’s grandpar-ents, Roberta and Bill Bruenn.

Bar Mitzvah of Jacob Koubi

Bar Mitzvah of Nicholas Basinger

My name is Jacob Koubi. I have lived in Las Vegas my entire life. My mother was born and raised in Long Island NY and my dad is originally from Israel. I have been told that I am very compassionate and loving. This is why I love to help animals. I currently volunteer with a local animal nonprofit rescue agency every weekend. I make toys and help these animals find new, loving, forever homes. I have three dogs of my own, fish, and one-step brother and one step sister. My future aspiration is to go to college and become an engineer. My dream job would be working for the Boeing Company as an engineer. In my spare time, I love to read books. I am very close to earning my black belt in Karate, so

watch out!!!!!

Dear Temple Family,

I say goodbye to you with the

beautiful words of Tefilat

Haderech (The prayer for the road)

from Debbie Friedman.

May we be blessed as we go on our

way

May we be guided in peace

May we be blessed with health and joy

May this be our blessing, amen.

May we be sheltered by wings of peace

May we be kept in safety and in love

May grace and compassion find their

way to every heart

May this be our blessing, amen.

Amen, may this be our blessing, amen.

May God Bless you with Shalom,

Religious School News

School Year 2014-15 We conclude a wonderful year of teaching and learning at the Religious School. Experiencing great lessons, prayer services, memorable moments from our Sundays, unique programs, and above all, a sense of tight community. The students had a blast during the High Holy Days. Our Pizza in the Hut was a wonderful night, and our Hebrew studies took the right turn being rigorous and accommodative at the same time. We celebrated Hanukkah together, we went to the movies, had a clothing drive, food drive, Purim Spiel, Purim Carnival, Passover Seders, and celebrated Israel’s 67th birthday. We celebrated Shabbat every month, having a different grade leading the Friday Night Service, and presenting a Jewish theme reflecting on their studies. We also entered 17 poems in the Holocaust Poetry Contest, and were part of hosting 10 summer camps from all across the West Coast. I want to thank the heart and soul of our Religious School Program- our teachers. They came ready every Sunday morning and Tuesday afternoon to teach our children precious lessons from our Jewish tradition, Hebrew language and prayers. Temple Sinai’s Religious School Program is rich and unique, and we are excited to be planning another fabulous year for our students, from Pre-K through 7th grade. I want to ask for your continued trust again next year with registering your children as early as possible (by 7/1/2015). Early registration will enable us ensure that our wonderful faculty will come back next year, energized with new and exciting ideas for our children. I wish you a wonderful summer break. Enjoy your family time and come back with charged energy. B’Shalom, Dr. Sharon Knafo Education Director

Tots Shabbat Friday, June 5th 6:15 PM to 6:45 PM

Bring your little ones, ages 1-5

for a lovely service just for kids (and their parents)!

Public Education Funding The legislature at Carson City is at a critical juncture with regard to Public Education funding. This issue is very complex but needs us to engage in it because it affects all of our futures, in particular those of our children and grandchildren. If you want to know how to have a concrete impact on this issue in Nevada please contact me at the Temple immediately. L’shalom Rabbi Malcolm Cohen

From Your Sisterhood From Your Men’s Club The S i s t e rhood Shabba t was FABULOUS, and the only complaint I heard was that more women would have loved to participate…can’t wait for next year’s. I would also love to give an “Atta Girl” to Resa Snyder and Marge Nordell. They designed and choreographed the entire evening. Thanks for making us look good!

This month is the Sisterhood Annual Meeting Sunday June 14 at 10am, guest speaker is Minnie Wood, APRN, speaking on women’s health issues and opportunities and how to live a happy and healthy life. We have a new slate of officers and I am very excited at how many new women show interest in Sisterhood activities at the Temple and wish to be added to the board. Change is often scary, but I am the type of person that looks at change as an adventure. 2015-16 will be my 4th year and final year as Sisterhood President and I feel we have taken the garden so skillfully nurtured by Ann Kaplan and dug our roots deeper. We have added diverse flowers and new seedlings, built annual traditions. The old guard will take a step back, enjoy the well-deserved rest they have earned while overseeing the fresh new faces and ideas designed to supercharge the Sisterhood programs. I want to thank Jan Shumow, Gift Shop Director, for her many years of priceless dedication to the development of our thriving Judaica business. Jan was honored as this year’s Sisterhood Tree of Life Leaf recipient. The Sisterhood’s Gift Shop is open during Temple hours of operation. Contact the office to peruse the goods! As usual Friday evenings and Sunday mornings Sisterhood will be attending the shop. The Sisterhood Gift Shop OFFERS INVITATIONS for any celebration and SPECIAL ORDERS! Get your Bar/Bat Mitzvah shopping done in one convenient location! Sisterhood is still looking for fun-loving, conscientious ladies to join the fun, Contact Resa Snyder for more information at [email protected] . As always, any woman who is a member of Temple Sinai is welcome to join the Sisterhood. Shalom, Tina Drago

Happy New Year! Some of you probably read that headline and wondered if I am a bit confused. After all, both our religious new year of Rosh Hashanah and our secular New Year celebrations are still several months away. However, for the Men’s Club of Temple Sinai, a “new year” is about to begin, as we host our Annual Meeting and Board Elections on June 14. Two new Directors and a new Financial Secretary will soon take office, and your current Board will share with you several exciting developments and plans that lie ahead in our 2015/16 fiscal year. Members, I hope you can join us. As extra incentive to attend, breakfast will be free on June 14! As I wind up the first year of my two-year term as President of the Temple Sinai Men’s Club, I think it is a good idea to look back over the last twelve months and highlight some of what our Club has achieved. In that time, our membership has grown back to over 100 men. Our “progressive” raffle is already a third of the way toward our goal of raising $1200 to fund a b’nai mitzvah education and reception. We have learned about our local court system, Three Square Food Bank, Israeli politics, local sports, and “the Mob” in Las Vegas. We have hosted a federal judge and the Superintendent of the Clark County School District. We have contributed to the sustainability campaign and toward new prayer books for the High Holy Days. We have even moved into our new building (even if that has meant some “growing pains” with the sound system)! All in all, it has been a great year for the Men’s Club! I want to thank each and every member of the Men’s Club for your participation and support over the last year. I want especially to thank those who have put in countless hours and limitless creative energy in service to our Club and Temple as members of the Board and as committee chairs: Past President Renato Ritter; First Vice President Les Gilbert; Second Vice President Howard Beckerman; Treasurer Ronen Rahaman; Secretary Craig Barishman; Directors Fred Kaplan, Mark Sample, Mitch Cohen, Mark Kosowsky, Carl Miller, and Phil Fisher; Committee Chairmen Isaac Cohen, Myron Bernstein, and Marty Myers; and, last but not least, all the members of our amazing breakfast crew! Each of you is to be commended for helping to make the last year the great one that it was for our Men’s Club. Here’s to another great year to come! Happy (Men’s Club) New Year! Kol tuv, Sean Lyttle

Anniversaries What’s ahead in our Torah?

June 5-6 Behalotecha G-d instructs Moses on the lighting of the Temple menorahs. The Levites are appointed as assistants to Aaron. A “second” Passover is given. Aaron and Miriam speak ill of Moses and Miriam is stricken with a skin afflic-tion. June 12-13 Shelach Moses sends twelve scouts into the land. Only Joshua and Caleb give a positive report. G-d’s angry decree results in 38 more years in the wilderness. June 19-20 Korach Moses and Aaron’s cousin Korach questions their leadership. He doesn’t prevail! The Kohanim and Levites manage dona-tions for the Sanctuary. June 26-27 Chukat The red heifer, the people

complain, Moses strikes the rock to bring forth

water, Miriam and Aaron die, Eleazer becomes

the Kohain Gadol.

Temple Sinai Gala to Honor

Michael Leven

The special guest of honor at this year’s Annual Gala is Michael Leven. Michael “Mike” Leven moved to Las Vegas in 2007. He was hired by Sheldon Adelson to become the Chief Operating Officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, a position he held until his retirement last December. Since retiring, Mike has assumed the role of International Chairman of the Planning Committee for Birthright Israel, and he volunteers as the Chairman and CEO of the Georgia Aquarium.

Mike, along with his wife Andrea, has a strong priority

for Jewish philanthropy. In addition to his support of

Temple Sinai, Mike has had a very profound effect on a

variety of local Jewish organizations – not only as a

donor, but also as an advisor and mentor to the up and

coming lay leadership in the Las Vegas Valley. The

valuable advice he has shared will benefit our local

community and its leadership for many years to come.

Mike’s spare time is now taken up by his family and his

profound love of sports. We are most grateful that he

has given up some of that precious time and allowed us

to honor him at this year’s Gala.

Please help us “thank” Mike Leven and further support

Temple Sinai.

You can support our efforts by:

Buying an ad in the Tribute Book

Buying a table or tickets to the Gala

Making a donation in honor of Michael Leven

Advertising and Sponsorship

An easy and important way you can help support your Temple is by utilizing our advertising and sponsorship programs. We need your help in finding advertisers. The programs are: Shofar advertising - starting at $15 is a really good deal for businesses in the area. They get to 350 families in print or online. All we need to contact them are a person’s name and their e-mail address. We take care of the rest. Please volunteer some names and addresses. See below. E-blast Sponsorship - The weekly e-blast can contain add-on advertising. The advertiser gets 5 weekly e-blasts for $18, a very easy but effective way to get to the 600 members on our e-mail list. All we need is the person’s name and their e-mail address. We take care of the rest. Shabbat Flyer Sponsorship - Personal messages may be displayed in the flyer. e.g. Sponsor in honor of your anniversary or birthday. An easy way to support your Temple and it is only $18. This may be coordinated with Oneg Shabbat sponsorships. To do any of the above or to supply information requested above, contact Shel Kolner (702.228.4744 or 702.334.8914) or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Temple News and Notes

Temple Sinai Personal Tribute Cards

Have you seen the personal tribute cards? If not, they are available in our Sisterhood gift shop. Please stop and take a look. These cards match our standard tribute cards but are used to send personal notes. They allow you to convey your personal sentiments to family and friends while still indicating to them that a donation was made in their honor to the Temple Sinai general fund. The cards are available in 7-packs for $36.00. They are also available by calling Dorothy Cohen (702.228.7040) or Phyllis Feigenson (973.525.7799). Talk to the ladies or stop in at the gift shop. You will be happy you did.

Temple Sinai Time Capsule

As a result of the efforts of several members, including Archie Weitman, Dr. Lawrence Copeland, Frances Copeland, Steve Haberkorn, Mark Ohriner, Myron Bernstein, Meera Kamegai and Seymour Kaplan, Temple Sinai is putting together a Time Capsule. It will be placed into a wall in our small Shul. The location will be marked by a plaque on the wall. If you have any information, including pictures, and any personal history that relates to the history of Temple Sinai, we would love to have you submit that information for placement in the Time Capsule. All of the information provided for the Time Capsule will be private. It should be placed into sealed envelopes, marked “Time Capsule”, and brought to the Temple. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Safe Nest Drop Off Box

Temple Sinai continues its support for Safe Nest by housing a drop off box on site. Safe Nest is Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive charity devoted solely to domestic violence issues. Safe Nest’s programs are concentrated in four areas of service: shelter, counseling, advocacy and prevention. Safe Nest accepts clothing, toys and baby supplies. For a comprehensive list please visit their website www.safenest.org . The drop off box is located on east side of the property near the center of the parking lot. For donation receipts please see Lisa in the office.

Pavers are customized bricks used to honor your friends and family whose names will be placed in the decorative walkway in our courtyard next to the Hebrew School classrooms. Note, they are not intended as memorials since people will be walking on them. Pavers are 7 1/8” by 3 1/4 inch and may contain up to 3 lines of engraving, with 16 characters per line including spaces. A donation of $118 for each custom paver is required. Please call the office or Shel Kolner at 702.334.8914 to order and arrange payment. Examples: Steve & Susie Shlomo Ben Yosef Goldbergstein Bar Mitzvah And Family Sept. 11, 1954
