VOLUME12 | JUnE 16-30, 2010

Published by:

Hello Abu Dhabi,

Summer temperatures have definitely come with a hidden blessing. In the past, an event half the scale of the World Cup meant no parking spaces near my home (on the Corniche), as fans crowded the beach or camped out in the small sheesha cafes to watch sports on outdoor TV screens. But not this World Cup! Because of the temperatures, people are crowding in homes, sports bars, restaurants, air conditioned tents and even movie theatres! Still, the air is filled with excitement, and yes, we defend the position that soccer is the ultimate global unifier! Take our own mosiac community, for instance soccer fever is the universal theme; the one thing you could safely start talking to a stranger about, and share a common passion.

Talking about passion, we’re happy to report our pursuit of new technology is paying off. Our experiment on mobile tagging has been hugely enlightening. As a prototype magazine being watched by developers the world over, our magazine operates in a technology microcosm that is the UAE (which has the highest mobile phone penetration in the world). Tempo launches an interesting innovation that heralds a new wave of total convergence. We will keep you posted on how it plays out. In the meantime, happy scanning, and keep sending your feedback.

We welcome to our team, Alma Kadragic—a good friend and one of the best journalists I know. We’ve also added a nice pool of community reporters, who raise their voices and share their views.

Happy summer, Abu Dhabi.

Dear ed,

Thank you for writing the article

about Emarati Vogue. In my

opinion everyone takes the

“dishdasha” or “kandoora” for

granted. And a lot of people

consider locals as being old

Dear ed,I love your tempo columns and

think it is highly youth oriented.

The famous story behind this is the discovery made by the Greek physicist, engineer, and inventor Archimedes.

While taking a bath, he noticed that the level of the water in the tub rose as he got in, and realized that this effect could be used to determine the volume of an object. For practical purposes water is incompressible, so the submerged “ship” would displace an amount of water equal to its own volume. By dividing the weight of the “ship” by the volume of water displaced, the density of the “ship” could be obtained.

This density would be lower than that of the “nail” if cheaper and less dense metals had been added. Archimedes then took to the streets naked, so excited by his discovery that he had forgotten to dress, crying “Eureka!”

Do you think football players have lost their sportsmanship?

“The movie was amazing, it got me thinking about it for a while which is not something that happens very often. Since it was the first Emirati movie to be played in the cinemas of UAE, it was close to my heart.

The story was real and I could relate to it very easily having lived in the UAE for quite some time. The sequence of the story was very understandable because at some point in my life I have been through the experiences of the characters in the movie.

The best thing for me was that I knew the main actor of the movie (Soud Al Ka’abi). He is an AUS (American University of Sharjah) student, majoring in Mass communication.”

ADNEC has announced the addition of an extra two performances

of the acclaimed dance musical ‘Lord of the Dance’ in a response to

growing interest from audiences in the region.

Tickets for the first four shows went on sale in April and because of

the rapid rate of sales, the two additional shows will be scheduled

for 26 June bringing the grand total to six live performances from

23 – 26 June at the Abu Dhabi Hall.

Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance has been well received by

critics. Since making its debut in Dublin in 1996, the show has been

enjoyed by over 100 million people in over 67 different countries.

Based on Irish folklore, this classic tale of Good vs. Evil is expressed

through the universal language of dance. As the story unfolds,

the Little Spirit travels through time to help the Lord of the Dance

protect his people from the challenge of Don Dorcha, the Dark

Lord. As this evil dark power challenges the hero, the incredible

adventure continues, drawing its audience into a mythical universe

of love and danger.

abu dhabi tempo gets a tour of ferrari world

This year marks the first anniversary of the untimely death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. One year ago on June 25th, 2009, we were shocked to hear that one of the world’s most legendary musical talents had passed away.

I just hung up my phone after my youngest brother gave me the news. He’s a kid, he believes the silly gossip channels, or so I thought. Coming home, I switched on the television only to find every channel plastered with the news. That summer, millions of fans all over

the globe mourned the loss of a true superstar as we said goodbye to the legendary King of Pop.

Michael Jackson was able to captivate his worldwide audience simply by appearing at an event. The sight of the icon in his trademark

fedora and sunglasses was guaranteed to generate crowds wherever he went. We often found ourselves trying to imitate his moonwalk, an

apt name for an out-of-this-world dance move.

There was a Michael Jackson song for every mood, for every emotion. As new arrivals unfamiliar with Abu Dhabi, one of the first things my

wife and I did was buy a Jackson CD to make our new place feel more like home. It worked. What made “MJ” unique was that we would find

ourselves singing along as he pushed for the preservation of our planet in Earth Song or about his relationship with one Ms. Billie Jean.

The Thriller album, Michael Jackson’s ladder to the upper echelon of musical talent, alongside the likes of The Beatles and Elvis Presley, provided us with hits that are as catchy and as danceable now as they were over 25 years ago when they were released. Michael Jackson’s music appealed to different generations and cultures as no other genre can. He was one of the only artists whose music both my parents and us brothers appreciated, something truly rare!

As we remember the musical genius and sing along to the plethora of timeless classics he left us with, we are sure that Michael Jackson’s music lives on, in our stereos and in our hearts!

The very first World Cup was held in 1930. It is held every four years, except for 1942 and 1946 because of World War II. The next tournament will be in 2010 in South Africa from June 11 to July 11. Brazil won a record five World Cup titles with Brazilian Ronaldo holding the individual record for most World Cup goals with 15.

FIRST GOAL: Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930. Although many believed American Bart McGee scored the first goal in the World Cup, against Belgium in the 40th minute, there was disagreement, and FIFA ruled that the first goal was scored by Frenchman Lucien Laurent in the 19th minute against Mexico on July 13, 1930.

TOP SCORING TEAM: Hungary scored 27 goals in the 1954 World Cup. Although Hungary made the finals that year it lost to West Germany 3-2.

YOUNGEST PLAYER: The youngest player ever to play in a World Cup match was Northern Ireland’s Norman Whiteside in a game against Yugoslavia in 1982. He was

17 years and 41 days old. Before this Pele held the record of youngest player.

FIRST BLACK PLAYER: In 1889 Rotherham United goalkeeper Arthur Wharton, born in Ghana, was the first black professional player.

LARGEST ATTENDANCE: The highest attendance for one match was in the 1950 final when Brazil played Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The official attendance was 199,854.

MOST CONSECUTIVE FIRST-ROUND ELIMINATIONS: Scotland holds the record with eight: 1954, 1958, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1998.

FIRST RED CARD: In 1970 World Club the red and yellow card system was introduced and the first player to receive a red card was Chile’s Carlos Caszely in 1974. It was in the 67th minute, in a match against West Germany

FIRST LIVE TV COVERAGE: This happened in the year 1937 for a practice match of Arsenal that was played at Highbury stadium

“WHAT’S THE BEST SOCCER GOAL EVER?”

Our vote: Definitely Maradona’s goal in the Argentina vs England game in 1986, in Mexico. You disagree? Then tell us which one deserves to get top billing.

PointView

Have you seen the photograph of Rafael Nadal posing for a photograph after he won the French Open? It was on the front page of many newspapers. It is a picture of him beaming at the camera and biting his cup. Note, he wasn’t biting a medal (something he does all the time), he was biting the handle of a large cup! Totally awkward!

Although Rafael is a perennial medal biter, many athletes like to do it all the time. Just think of the photos of the marathoners and Olympians who win their medals, they’re always posing with the medals between their teeth. I’m sure it looked cute on the first guy (or girl) who did it, but now, every Rafael, Felix and Hussain do it, and it looks plain dumb. Remember the silver medalist luger from Germany, David Moeller who bit his medal and chipped a tooth? That’s one guy who won’t be biting a medal!

whY do athletes bite their medals?bY aYman buKair, 19, universitY student

So what does this medal biting mean? It is clearly supposed to be a gag gesture of an athlete attempting to check the authenticity of the prize. But, I wanted to know…. can you really tell the purity of a medal by biting it? Does it really work? I did a bit of research on the internet to find out…

According to Slate.com, you wouldn’t be able to find out about the authenticity of the medal unless it was a certain metal and you had lots of biting practice. It appears that in their purest forms, both gold and silver are very soft metals that would leave teeth marks if they were bitten. This is according to something called a ‘Mohs hardness scale’ which pairs materials based on which one will scratch the most. Gold scores 2.5 and silver (which is harder) scores a 2.7. Teeth enamel scores higher, and that basically means that your teeth will scratch these lowered scores metals and not vice versa.

Fundamentally, the bite test doesn’t work at all! And that’s because the medals given to athletes aren’t pure anyway. For instance, Olympian gold isn’t pure gold, and neither is silver. So why do athletes like to monkey around with medals in their mouths? The real reason, I learned, is that media photographers like to urge the athletes to do it so that they get a more ‘interesting’ picture. So photographers: quit the unfunny gags, and athletes: don’t do it!

Sharifa Sehweil’s interest in physical and mental health began 35 years ago when she discovered a book about yoga in husband Noureddine’s library . “I was new in the United States,” she says, “and I found yoga a great way to spend the time,” enjoying the physical and mental peace of yoga.

When she was diagnosed with cancer ten years ago, yoga proved a life saver. In Louisiana for medical treatment, Sharifa began going to a gym. “I found a woman named Debbie who I will always remember,” she says, “very sweet and compassionate. She made me realize I should strengthen my core” to get back to health. That meant taking up pilates while continuing yoga.

Back in Abu Dhabi, Sharifa decided to pass on to others what she knew about yoga and started teaching. However, the pilates bug had bitten her, and after a training course in Montreal, Sharifa was certified to teach pilates. She started looking for a place to train people in pilates or yoga and the accompanying mental disciplines.

In 2007, Sharifa, her daughter Nadia, and Elina Nykanen Rozycki opened a two-in-one studio, Soma Pilates and Yoga Tree, in a Bateen villa. Today among the approximately 400 students with various health issues. Sharifa says pilates can help people manage “back or knee problems, arthritis, some neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis.”

In addition, for the last 15 years, Sharifa has been raising money for Palestinian children. The child of Palestinian emigrants and married to a Palestinian, Sharifa feels children are “the victims of everything.” Her charitable activities have involved everything from community events to hosting parties at home .

The secret of integrating health and charity, Sharifa says, is “to do what makes you happy. Then you attract the right kind of energies around you.”

YourTamakkan1. You have a full time job at one of the oil companies as Internal Communications Specialist. What made you decide to start a business at the same time?

Well, in the beginning, I wasn’t sure I was going to be offered any job, and I knew job hunting takes time, but by the time I launched my business, I found a good job - maybe the business opened other doors.

2. You majored in communications at Zayed University and are a good writer of fiction and nonfiction. Your business K’s Cookies is kitchen-based and seems entirely different. Why did you choose cookies?

Every person has several hobbies and passions. I may be a good writer and a reader, but I also have other things that I love and care about. Cooking is one of them.

3. Once you decided to start K’s Cookies, what was the biggest problem for you?

Cookies is something new to our society that we brought from the western world. The fear was, would our society love to have something like cookies and would they accept it. 4. How do you come up with the recipes?

Recipes are available everywhere; however, I played with the flavors. 5. Cookies are a common product. How do you differentiate K’s Cookies from others?

They are freshly baked, made at home, clean, branded, and have many flavors. 6. Stories are part of your marketing? Why?

Using the story helped in advertising the flavors of K›s Cookies. It was just a random idea, but people loved it, it sounded interesting and funny, it is definitely an attention grabber. 7. You are the youngest of 10 siblings. What did your brothers and sisters have to say when you told them you would start K’s Cookies?

I got the support, they pushed me further to do it, encouraged me in every step, advised me if there was anything wrong, and today they are helping me expand.

8. How much money did you need to start the business?

Not much, the expenses changed throughout the project. I started with about 10K and am still managing the finances. It’s from my own money and with some family help.

9. What about your friends? Are they buying the cookies?

My friends are the first people who filled my order book. They are a major support too. 10. Right now you are doing the business from home. Do you plan to move it outside the home at any point?

Yes, I’m looking forward to it, but it will depend on when I can stand on my feet fully with strength and manage to do everything as well as find the best location for it. 11. Could this business evolve into something large or do you want to keep small?

Yes, it could grow big, inshallah one day. With the help and contribution of people and customers with ideas for K›s Cookies, my business will inshallah not only be a shop or a kiosk but a chain in the UAE and the Middle East.

Let’s stay optimistic and keep it for destiny to unveil. I always say, dream, dream, and take action. Everything starts small, but you with your actions and will can grow it big.

The pixel upgrade of 960 x 640 (four times as much as the iPhone 3GS) along with the IPS technology and micro-SIM card slot used in the iPad are great for better high def pictures. The wider viewing angles will make your shots look clearer when taken using the iPhone 4GS’ forward-facing camera. The in-built processor is an A4 CPU.

For 2 GB, you can store approximately 10,000 emails with no attachments, 1,500 emails with attachments and 4,000 web-pages. You can stream around 200 minutes of video and post 500 photos to Facebook or MySpace.

The phone is set to contain split volume buttons and a

noise cancellation microphone which can be useful when

shooting outdoors among crowds.

Supposedly, the iPhone also contains a video-chat

application and other tools including a multi-tasking

feature demanded by users of the 3GS, home screen

folders and a unified email inbox.

Parents and others who’ve forgotten how it was when they were students like to say that young people today are lazy, they don’t like to work, they avoid challenges at school or at work. In the UAE people who aren’t Emiratis like to say that young Emiratis are really lazy, really don’t like to work, and can’t stand challenges of any kind. Some add that Emiratis keep to themselves and don’t like to socialize with people from other cultures.

That’s not the impression given by four Emirati college students who spoke at a forum on Emiratization in the workplace. They are students at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) which organized the forum; they have different majors, but they agreed about what they liked and didn’t like at school and what they will be looking for after they graduate and start working as professionals.

Zainab is a business/marketing major. She wants to work as a project manager after she graduates.

Shamsa is a business/HR major. She worked for a while in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and hopes to become an HR manager and also perhaps an entrepreneur with her own company.

Alanoud is a business/management major. She too wants to work as a project manager.

Maitha is an English major and likes to write fiction. She has worked at Abu Dhabi Airports Company and wants a career in event management.

At ADU, they like studying with girls from other cultures. Maitha and Shamsa previously attended one of the national universities where all the students were Emiratis. They said they enjoy having friends with different experiences and contrasting

Each of them is determined to finish the bachelor’s degree. Alanoud who was Student Council President is about to graduate and says, “getting a degree is very important in my family.” It’s a “building block” toward self development.

Maitha didn’t immediately start at ADU after leaving her first university. Now she says, “I’m not stopping at the bachelor’s degree.” She wants at least a master’s, maybe even a doctorate.

Shamsa too took a year off after her first experience at university. She wants to “build” her future and says her family encourages her. Shamsa’s mother - like Alanoud’s father - attended the forum.

Zainab says everyone in her family has encouraged her to study. “Everyone in my family has a degree,” she said, “not just bachelor’s, but master’s, and Ph.D.

Like Alanoud who will soon be interviewing for work, the others look forward to jobs after graduation. Three of them want their job to be in the private sector. Shamsa who experienced the public sector in her work placement position says private companies offer better “chances and opportunities” as well as more flexible scheduling which she needs to enroll in a graduate program.

Alanoud looks for more challenges in the private sector. “I will be expected to prove myself, which will drive me to do more,” she explained, “and this way I will also develop my skills.”

Maitha said that a private company will offer “a development and training program that will only make me more productive as an employee.”

The girls agreed that a good employer provides a clear career path and training opportunities. Also very important is recognition for work well done. “It increases confidence and makes you work even harder and better so you can be worthy of the praise you have received,” explained Zainab.

Interestingly, pay isn’t a major consideration for any of them although as Maitha said, “the salary does play a part, of course.”

Q1. If you had to choose a theme song for your life at the moment, what would it be and why?

Eddie Brickell and The New Bohemians. I’m in that phase of my life where I’m restructuring my ideas about the world and myself and I’m extremely skeptical about pretty much everything and everyone.

Q2. Name one guilty pleasure of yours.

Eating spoonfuls of ketchup without any other food. Q3. Your ideal celebrity dinner date?

Marilyn Manson

Q4. The most disgusting food you’ve ever eaten?

Chutney/Pickle (the Indian kind) made out of raisins. It was all squishy and sick. Q5. The most dangerous thing you’ve done?

Sorry, got none. I pondered for sometime but I couldn›t think of anything really. Q6. In three words, describe what’s currently running through your mind.

Revolution. Colour. Insanity.

Q1. If you had to choose a theme song for your life at the moment, what would it be and why?

Paris (Aeroplane Remix - Friendly Fires)

Q2. Name one guilty pleasure of yours.

Coffee, I always end up over-thinking and my brain begins to throb. I just love the idea of drinking something to make you more alert. I could do without it!

Q3. Your ideal celebrity dinner date?

3. Lady Gaga

Q4. The most disgusting food you’ve ever eaten?

Lamb’s tongue, or was it cow’s tongue... Probably lamb’s.

Q5. The most dangerous thing you’ve done?

I’m not really into danger, my anxiety is enough of a thrill for me. Swimming really far from the beach and almost drowning I think.

Q6. In three words, describe what’s currently running through your mind.

Sleep. Grateful. Yellow.

I was invited to go to Zayed University last week to speak to some of the students. It is always a delight to speak to the young ladies, with their observant eyes, their attentive ears, just absorbing every work you utter. It is nice to see how they are not beginning from zero; they already have a wealth of experiences that people of my generation had to acquire over a number of years.

I was hammered by questions about how I started and about the different things I had accomplished, and then they started to ask me about Jalal’s Art trip, all seemed well until I mentioned that the next art trip will be under water, this was the turning point in the conversation, as they said “well you lost most of us”. At this point one of them said “What if I bring a submarine!!??”

Wow! In all these years of creative thinking and brainstorming sessions I had never really imagined that to be a serious remark. To test the seriousness of this student I said “Fine, but I will not be responsible for its transportation, or anything related to it”.

Now regardless if the submarine does ever come on the trip, or if the student also does not join the trip, the point of wanting to go on such self improving endeavors was the lesson they taught me, the problem these young Emirati ladies have was the image of people in their swimsuits wearing scuba gear and diving to the bottom of the sea. That could be one image but there are many other options that one can experience in the bottom of the sea.

My point of the trip is not to make new obstacles for the young artists to overcome, but I believe the trip has to cover the main three elements of UAE before it goes abroad, which is the sky, land and sea, as our culture and history is related to all three, and since the previous 3 trips were in land, and the sky is a little off limits, the sea was my next option.

The talk with the young ladies was such an educational experience for me, learning from them was great; their hunger to learn and find solutions, their attitude of following their dreams yet maintaining our values is something to be proud of. I thank them all, and thank Dr. Sharon Lavon who listened to her students, and invited me to talk to my young teachers.

CultureTalkbY venita. sin the world of glitz, riches and jahili

For a long time, the nearest association of preserving culture and heritage in UAE was Sharjah, the self proclaimed cultural center that even received acclamation by UNESCO in 1998 for being the cultural capital of the Arab World.

Now as we all know, with the developments taking place in Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi is already gaining a world-class recognition as the Cultural District in the UAE. In the midst of all this media hoopla we have a runner up in the making. Jahili Fort is certainly not the next Guggenheim or Louvre of Abu Dhabi but without a doubt it is one of the greatest landmarks and symbols of UAE’s cultural heritage.

The picturesque Al Jahili Fort is the birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding President of the country and Ruler

of Abu Dhabi. The fort was built in 1891 to defend Al Ain and protect the precious palm groves of this ‘Oasis City.

Al Jahili now takes the number of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority’s visitor centres throughout the emirate to four, with a fifth being operated at Mina Zayed’s cruise terminal in the November-May season. Al Jahili is the first of three visitor centres the authority is planning to open this year.

In addition, the authority is planning to increase the number of visitor information kiosks in operation throughout the emirate. To increase the interactive experience, it also plans to install touch-screen kiosks at prominent locations within Al Ain and Abu Dhabi including the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi site, the world’s largest indoor theme park set to open on October 28th.

In reality we should be spending more time and money on preserving

the culture of the UAE, even while we celebrate cultures from around the world. Indeed with good

marketing, we should be able to establish a regional tourism icon and an international cultural treasure.

blog call: everY picture tells an abu dhabi storYbY peter waters

I’ve always enjoyed a passion for photography from an early age and in the nine years I’ve lived in Abu Dhabi have accumulated over 10,000 photos. So 18 months ago I decided to share the best of these with the world by starting my own Abu Dhabi photoblog. Through my photos, I’ve tried capturing the unique essence and spirit of Abu Dhabi. I registered my blog with “City Daily Photo” http://citydailyphoto.com/, a public photoblog portal started in 2005 by Eric Tenin with his “Paris – One Photo A Day” blog. Today, it’s a fantastic collection of photos submitted daily from people living in over 1000 cities worldwide from obscure places such as La Antigua and Maungaturoto to well-known cities such as London, New York and Paris and now Abu Dhabi. My blog gets an average of 2500 visits a month from people all over the world - everywhere from Athens to Warsaw. Many readers leave interesting and amusing comments, questions or additional information about the photos. I’ve got 170 public followers who receive regular updates automatically. The spinoffs have been numerous: three of my photos have graced the covers of a Gulf Educational journal, I’ve won a top 100 blog award, I’ve had two advertising agencies approach me about buying

some of my pictures, and even make a whopping $5 a month through advertising on my site! So popular has the blog been with friends and family that last November I decided to publish a book of the blog, “Abu Dhabi Uncovered”, which made for quite an unusual Christmas present. I’ve already started on a second book, which unsurprisingly is due out in time for next Christmas!

Aries: Patience and tolerance are the way to go this month. Not everyone can fulfill your expectations. And let’s face it, you do have some high demands…

Taurus: Your social life is on the go! Expect grand plans, exciting social events and plenty of chances to mingle with the ‘IT’ crowd soon.

Gemini: Work takes an interesting turn. Make the best use of your natural abilities to provide enough inspiration and exhilaration to keep things from slowing down.

Cancer: It’s a clash of the planets as the influences of both Saturn and Uranus are set to collide. You may end up with a heavier workload than you’d like but sweet temptation lurks around every corner. Which do you choose?

Leo: It’s time for a break from the drama. Enjoy this relaxing period while it lasts so as to recharge your batteries for life’s next batch of hurdles.

Virgo: You’ve been working hard. That much is plain for everyone to see. It’s high time that you kicked off those shoes and let your hair down. Enjoy the moment!

Libra: You are indeed a delight to behold! With your natural ability to balance your worldly concerns with a dose of your charming witty repartees, you definitely brighten the lives of those around you.

Scorpio: Your intensity is on the rise. Channel all that energy into some creative outlets. What with changing and rearranging your life, you have enough on your hands as it is.

Sagittarius: The fire seems to be ebbing away. Try to cook some up and the ol’ Sagittarian joie de vivre will be the talk of the town once again.

Capricorn: Everyone knows you as the ‘grounded’ one. But don’t forget that you can reach for those stars too. Stretch those branches higher and higher until you get what you need.

Aquarius: You are set to dazzle the masses with your unique brand of charm. However, don’t forget the gold behind the real glitter. Focus on the needs of your loved ones the most.

Pisces: No man (or woman) is an island. You’ve been hurt in the past but people have a way of surprising you when you least expect it. For all you know, today’s enemy could turn out to be tomorrow’s friend.
