O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
1. O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown: how pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish which once was bright as morn!
Ah, Holy Jesus, vs. 4, 5
4. For me, kind Jesus, was thy incarnation, thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation; thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion, for my salvation. 5. Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee, I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee, think on thy pity and thy love unswerving, not my deserving.
Contemplation of the Cross
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
1.When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died; my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. 2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
2. What thou, my Lord, has suffered was all for sinners' gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! 'Tis I deserve thy place; look on me with thy favor, vouchsafe to me thy grace.
3. What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? O make me thine forever; and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love for thee.
(sung in minor key) 3. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown. 4. Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Let us pray: Blessed Lord, you have caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant us so to hear them read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of ever-lasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen. PSALTER—PSALM 22: My God, My God, Why? Vermeulen-Roberts/ Eelco Vos READING—THE FORESHADOWING Isaiah 52:13-53:12 Pastor Matthew Johnson

CALL TO OFFERING Pastor Mark Himel
The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the common folk during Holy Week. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae. Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and death; we remember the cataclys-mic nature of his sacrifice and through the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory.

[Refrain] My God, my God, why have you left me here? Where are you now, when I need you near to rescue me, deliver me from fear? Please, don't forsake me, my God. LORD, answer me; do you not hear my sighing? All day and night, my eyes are sore from crying? I long for you, to keep my hope from dying. I find no rest. [Refrain] See, O my God, that I am poor and weak. I have no voice, I have no strength to speak. They scoff and stare, have pierced my hands and feet. My heart is melting. O LORD, my God, my enemies despise me. They steal my clothes; they mock andcompromise me. "Where is your God?"" they taunt and terrorise me. Don't stay away. [Refrain]
In the Cross of Christ I Glory
1. In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o'er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. 2. When the woes of life o'ertake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy, never shall the cross forsake me. Lo! it glows with peace and joy. 3. When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way, from the cross the radiance streaming adds more luster to the day.
1. Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day. 2. Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me; and from my stricken heart with tears two wonders I confess: the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.
Only Love Christopher Joyner, tenor
Beneath the Cross of Jesus, v. 3
3. I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.
Will You Not Watch?
Agnus Brevis
Ah, Holy Jesus, vs. 1, 2, 3
1. Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended, that we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted! 2. Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee! 'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee; I crucified thee. 3. Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; the slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered. For our atonement, while we nothing heeded, God interceded.
4. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide. 5. In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o'er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime.
