TODAY’S GAME The #3/3-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (9-0) takes on its biggest challenge of the young season traveling to face the #2/2-ranked Stanford Cardinal (8-0) in Maples Pavilion on Sat., Dec. 19 in an 11:30 a.m. PT tip on Fox SportsNet.

WORTH NOTING ABOUT TODAY’S GAME •Of interest to Tennessee fans... the Lady Vols are ranked third in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls while the Vols are ranked in the eighth and ninth spots, in the respective polls. UT is one of three schools who can boast of their women’s and men’s teams in the top 10 -- The Duke women (ranked 7/8) and the Blue Devil men (7/7) and the North Carolina Tar Heel women (ranked 9/10) and the UNC men (10/10) all hold down elite spots in the polls. • Tennessee and Stanford are two of 13 teams who are still undefeated as of Dec. 17. Interestingly enough, four Southeastern Conference teams are included in that elite category with Tennessee, Geor-gia, Kentucky and LSU all sporting identical 9-0 records. Think they are playing a “cream-puff” schedule? Not a chance. Tennessee is tops in the RPI and number two in the SOS while Georgia’s RPI is 11, Ken-tucky is 28 and LSU is 34. • This December marks Tennessee’s 20th anniversary of trips out to northern California to play Stanford. The fi rst meeting in Maples between the two teams was on Dec. 15, 1989, when the number two ranked Lady Vols were handed a 85-71 loss by the #3-ranked Cardinal. Following the 14-point butt-kicking, UT Coach Pat Summitt still addressed the Cardinal booster group postgame -- months earlier, SU Coach Tara VanDerveer had asked Summitt if she would speak to them. • Chances are always pretty good that a Tennessee vs. Stanford game might need to go into extra innings. The Lady Vols have participated in 44 overtime affairs all-time (against all opponents) and one-ninth of those games (fi ve) have come against the Cardinal. UT leads 3-2 in overtime contests vs. SU. In fact, the last time the two teams met in Maples, Stanford claimed a 73-69 OT victory in Dec. 2007. The Lady Vols returned the favor a few months later defeating the Cardinal in the title game to win NCAA Championship number eight in Tampa, Fla. •Maples Pavilion is a tough place for opponents to play and Tennessee is no exception. Since the 2000 season, the Lady Vols have escaped from Maples with a 3-1 record losing on the last trip to Palo Alto in 2007. Overall, UT is 5-4 in games played on the formerly bouncy court. In the four games over the last nine years, Tennessee has outscored Stanford 72.5 ppg to 67.0 ppg for the Cardinal. •This marks the fi rst time in the series that UT is not the higher ranked team when meeting Stanford in Maples. Tennessee has been ranked higher in all nine meetings on the SU campus. After breaking for the holidays, the Lady Vols will get back together in Knoxville on Dec. 27 and begin preparations for Old Dominion who comes to town on Dec. 30. ON THIS DAY IN LADY VOL BASKETBALL HISTORY UT is 10-1 in games played on Dec. 19. The Lady Vols are 3-0 at home, 5-1 on the road and 2-0 on neutral courts. The last time out on Dec. 19, the #1-ranked Lady Vols defeated UCLA, 82-70, in Los Angeles1, in 2007.

Lady Vols hold off a pesky Rutgers squad behind Shekinna Stricklen’s 19 pts and 5 stls in Madison Square Garden

The Cardinals became the 180th all-time Tennessee opponent as Bjorklund pops in 19 pts. including 5 treys.

Stricklen scored eight of UT’s 11 overtime points en route to 25 for the game to topple the #3/4-ranked Cardinal in 2008.

Glory Johnson posted a double double (17 pts, 12 rebs) in her fi rst career game in the Orange & White vs. USF.

Angie Bjorklund’s six threes spurred her to tie a career-high with 29 points as UT snapped ODU’s 29-game home winning streak.Last season, the Sooners foiled Coach Summitt’s fi rst attempt at career win No. 1,000. Baugh re-injured her ACL in OKC.Stricklen’s double double (13 pts, 10 rebs) helped make S.C. the fourth team the Lady Vols have beaten 40 times.

After posting two wins against MSU last season, the Bulldogs re-main the only SEC school to have never beaten UT.

Bjorklund knocked down six threes and scored 25 points against UF in the SEC Tourney to avenge the Gators regular season win.

On Senior Day, Alex Fuller scored 17 points and grabbed 14 re-bounds to keep Vandy from its fi rst win in Knoxville.The Lady Vols downed the Lady Bulldogs for Coach Summitt’s 1,000th career win on Feb. 5 behind Johnson’s 20 pt, 10 reb game.

Bjorklund’s 21 points were not enough as the Lady Tigers downed UT 63-61 in Baton Rouge last season.

The Tigers became the fi rst team since 2003-04 to beat UT twice in a season.UT hasn’t lost to the Gamecocks since Jan. 23, 1980, in Columbia, a streak of 36 consecutive games.Stricklen scored 11 points in her fi rst trip back to her home state of Arkansas, and UT won 76-67.

Since 2002, the series record is 9-7 in favor of UT with an average score of 62.7 for LSU and 61.8 for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee owns a 42-2 record all-time against the Crimson Tide, and haven’t lost to UA since March 3, 1984.

UT boasts an 11-4 mark all-time on Valentine’s Day, including a 7-1 record at home.

Alex Fuller was the only Lady Vol in double fi gures, with 12 points, as UT lost, 74-58, in Nashville last season.

The Lady Vols have won 17 straight against Ole Miss, dating to Feb. 4, 1996, when the Rebels claimed a 73-51 win in Oxford.

THE 4-1-1 ON STANFORD In Stanford’s last outing before playing Ten-nessee, Cardinal Kayla Pedersen had 22 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots and No. 2-ranked Stanford extended its winning streak at Maples Pavilion to 34 games with a 71-55 victory over No. 7-ranked Duke on Dec. 15. Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinal (8-0) while reserve JJ Hones added 12 points, scoring six straight during one span late. The Cardinal shot 51.9 percent in the fi rst half on the way to a commanding 39-23 lead, holding Duke to 23.7 percent. Stanford’s unbeat-en start matches the program’s 8-0 run to open the 2004-05 season, which ended with a loss at Tennessee.

LAST MEETING WITH THE CARDINAL The Tennessee Lady Vols needed an extra fi ve minutes to claim a 79-69 win on Dec. 21, 2008 over No. 3/4-ranked Stanford and improve to 9-2 before heading into the holiday break. FreshmanShekinna Stricklen recorded a career-high 25 points, including eight of UT’s 11 points in over-time. The Lady Vols held the Cardinal to only one point in the extra session. With 7:29 remaining in the fi rst half, Tennessee held a slim 22-21 lead, but limited Stanford to only two fi eld goals before the break, extending its lead to 41-32 at the half.Stanford came out strong to begin the second pe-riod. It quickly trimmed the lead to three and held a 49-48 lead with 12:49 to play in regulation. With the score tied at 52 apiece and 11:16 remaining, Tennessee held Stanford to just three fi eld goals over the next 3:09 to build a 65-60 lead. Down the stretch, SU trimmed the lead and evened the score at 68 all on a Jeanette Pohlen three-pointer with 52.6 seconds to go. Lady Vol fresh-man Alicia Manning stepped up and locked down on Stanford redshirt-sophomore Melanie Murphy, blocking the last second shot to send the game into OT. With the extra fi ve minutes, Stricklen de-cided to take over. She had eight points on 3-of-3 shooting in the deciding fi ve minutes. Senior Alex Fuller stepped to the line with 23.2 seconds and knocked down a pair free throws to put Tennes-

see up 78-69. The only Cardinal point of the extra period came on a Jayne Appel free throw with 3:10 to play in the extra session. Additionally, it was the 300th Lady Vol victory in Thompson-Boling Arena.

LAST TIME AT MAPLES Stanford handed the top-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols their fi rst loss of the 2007-08 season with a 73-69 overtime victory on Dec. 22, 2007, in Palo Alto. Pac-10 Player of the Week Candice Wiggins scored 22 points in her fi rst career win over UT, and Stanford’s fi rst since Dec. 15, 1996. SU sophomore Jayne Appel had 19 points (11 in the last 20 min-utes), 14 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Lady Vol Candace Parker put up 25 points, 10 re-bounds and tallied four blocks. Wiggins scored the Cardinal’s fi nal six points of regulation but missed two free throws with 16.9 seconds to go, allowing Parker to score the tying basket with 7.4 seconds remaining in regulation. Rosalyn Gold-Onwude scored nine of Stanford’s 10 points in overtime, with the other coming from a Wiggins’ free throw. Gold-Onwude fi nished with 13. UT seniors Alexis Hornbuckle and Shannon Bobbitt added 15 and 12 tallies, respectively.

UT VS. THE PAC-10 Tennessee has taken on nine (never played Cal) of the 10 teams from the Pacifi c-10 Conference all-time and sports a 55-13 record. Only three teams have claimed victories over UT-Southern California (seven times), Stanford (fi ve) and UCLA (once).

LOTS OF WINS Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt and Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer are a combined 1,779-386 for a staggering .822 winning percentage. Since the inception of the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 1982, UT and Stanford have made a combined 26 trips and collected 10 NCAA titles. The Lady Vols have made 18 visits and grabbed eight titles, while the Cardinal has two titles in eight trips.

RANKING WITH THE BEST In 26 meetings, there has only been one game where both teams were not ranked, Dec. 19, 1998, when UT was No. 2 and Stanford was unranked...In 25 of the 26 all-time meetings at least one of the two teams has been ranked in the top fi ve nationally... STANFORD SERIES This marks the 27th meeting between the two schools dating back to the 1988 season. UT and Stanford have developed a strong high-ranking in-tersectional rivalry in a series contested at least once annually for the last 20 years. UT has controlled the recent match-ups, amazingly having taken the last 13 of 14 contests. Stanford has won consecutive meetings over the Lady Vols only once. The Cardi-nal has forced fi ve of those games into extra minutes and the Lady Vols have won three overtimes includ-ing last season’s 79-69 OT win. The squads have competed three times in the postseason, with each of those games going Tennessee’s way. In 1991, the Lady Vols defeated the Cardinal in the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans, La., 68-60, on their way to their third national championship. In 2004, the two met in the Midwest Regional Championship game in Norman, Okla., on March 30. The Lady Vols earned a close 62-60 win to reach the Final Four in New Orleans. And in 2008, UT defeated SU in the NCAA title game, 64-48, in Tampa, Fla.

HALL OF FAMERS & OLYMPIC GOLD Tara VanDerveer joined Pat Summitt in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as she was inducted in April 2002 in Knoxville, Tenn. Both also were gold medal winning Olympic coaches -- Sum-mitt in 1984 and VanDerveer in 1996. Tara VanDer-veer served as head coach of the 1996 United States Olympic Women’s Basketball Team that won the gold medal in Atlanta, Ga. She guided the Olym-pic Team to an unblemished 60-0 record from 1995-96 and owns an all-time international head coach-ing record of 88-8 (.917), while coaching a pair of Lady Vols (Nikki McCray and Carla McGhee) on the squad. Meanwhile, Pat Summitt boasts an all-time international record of 63-4 (.940) during her time at the helm of the national squad. She served as head coach of the 1984 United States Olympic Women’s Basketball Team that won the gold medal in Los An-geles.

ANGIE B LOOKING TOWARD 1,000 POINTS Lady Vol junior Angie Bjorklund is now just 208 points away from 1,000 career points. She scored 318 as a rookie and 344 as a sophomore. This season, she has 130 to date for a career total of 792. She will be-come the 34th all-time player to reach the 1,000 point club.

YOU’D TELL ME I WAS LYING... If I told you that a Lady Vol was ranked 1 in

Southeastern Conference Field Goal accuracy this week. Sophomore Alyssia Brewer is leading the way shooting .628 (27-43) for eight games. Last season, Brewer shot 41 percent on the year (73-178).

RAISING CAIN UT redshirt sophomore center Kelley Cain returned to the starting line-up against Rutgers. Cain suffered a concussion against UCLA on Nov. 28 and was held out of the George Washington game on Dec. 1. Cain was cleared to play against #17-ranked Texas on Dec. 6 and came off the bench to score 12 points (6-6 FG), grab six boards and swat away four shots. She fol-lowed that up with a nine point, nine rebound and six blocked shot performance against Rutgers.

GOT THE PATCH Following the reporting of grades for the Fall semester two more Lady Vols added the Vol Scholar patch to their uniform. Rookies Taber Spani recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA and Faith Dupree pulled all As and a B to earn a patch. With their addition, eight Lady

Vols are proudly displaying VOLScholar patches on their jerseys this semester -- Briana Bass, Angie Bjork-lund, Kelley Cain, Glory Johnson, Alicia Manning and Sydney Smallbone. The VOLScholar program is an initiative of UT’s Thornton Athletics Student Life Center which is a comprehensive academic and citizenship-building program that has gained enthusiastic support from UT’s men’s and women’s athletic teams. Student-athletes earn the right to wear the VOLScholar patch on their uniform by achieving a 3.0 grade-point average during the previous fall and/or spring semester.

STRICK HONORED Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week for the second time this season (Nov. 30-Dec. 6).In the UT’s fi rst game of the week against George Washington, Stricklen notched her fourth career double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She was 8-of-13 from the fi eld to help

Tennessee to a 93-53 win over the Colonials. Against #17/17 Texas on Dec. 6, Stricklen tallied her 27th ca-reer double fi gure scoring game with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The Morrilton, Ark., native also added six rebounds and fi ve assists against the Longhorns. For the week, Stricklen averaged 15.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 3.0 apg, and shot 60.9 percent from the fi eld in leading UT to average wins of 30.0 points.

SOLID SHOWING AGAINST THE HORNS Against #17-ranked Texas, Tennessee used an 8-0 run to build an 11-5 lead (at 14:55) and then put togeth-er a 12-0 run over 4:55 to take a 31-18 lead with 5:29 to play in the fi rst half. UT’s largest defi cit of the fi rst half was two at 18:23; it’s largest lead was 17 at 0:27. Tennessee led at the half for the fi fth time this season. In those games, UT is 5-0. Texas went without a point from the 3:12 mark of the fi rst half to the 16:29 point of the second, allowing Tennessee a 14-0 run to build a 48-24 lead. IS THERE A BIG 12 DIVISION FOR US? This season, Tennessee might qualify for di-visional play in the Big 12. The Lady Vols have four opponents on its schedule from that conference. UT defeated #7/4 Baylor in Knoxville (74-65)... traveled to San Antonio and knocked off Texas Tech, 91-53 and then defeated #17 Texas, 78-58, on Dec. 6. Oklahoma comes to town on Jan. 3 to Thompson-Boling Arena.

SAPULPA WAS IN THE HOUSE Sophomore post Alyssia Brewer of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, showed up in a big way against George Washington on Dec. 1. UT was without starting cen-ter Kelley Cain who was being held out due to a con-cussion suffered in the UCLA game. The 6’3” Brewer came in the fi rst half at the 14:49 mark and scored four quick layups and a free throw in eight minutes to record nine points in the opening stanza. In the second half, she was inserted at the 14:13 mark and played the rest of the game totaling 14 second stanza points for a ca-reer high 23 points (11-15 FG) to go along with seven rebounds.

COACH D Lady Vol assistant basketball coach Daedra Charles-Furlow, affectionately known as “Coach D,” announced on Dec. 1 that she is dealing with medical issues. “I am dealing with some personal medical is-sues at this time,” said Charles-Furlow. “It is possible that there may be times when I am unable to travel. For that reason, I decided to make this announcement since it will affect my duties as recruiting coordinator.” A former Lady Vol Olympian and All-American, Charles-Furlow joined the Lady Vol staff in May 2008 replacing Nikki Caldwell who accepted the head coaching posi-tion at UCLA. “Daedra’s health and well-being is our fi rst concern,” said head coach Pat Summitt. “While she will continue with her assistant coaching duties on

CROWDS A PLENTY Playing in front of huge crowds is nothing new to Tennessee Lady Vol basketball but the week of Nov. 22-28 was one to note. In three games (two on the road), the Lady Vols played in front of a total of 37,873 fans (an average of 12,624 per game) – including two record-breaking crowds on the road. On Nov. 25 at Middle Tennessee State, a new record crowd of 11,802 was on hand for the Thanksgiving eve clash. MTSU’s Murphy Center’s capacity is listed at 11,520. On Nov. 22 at Virginia, a new record crowd of 11,895 crammed the stands on “Hotdog Night” at the John Paul Jones Arena. Tennessee had one game at home during that span against UCLA on Nov. 28 where 14,176 turned out for a matinee contest. Last season, Tennessee played in front of 17 crowds of 10,000-plus.

NOGGIN KNOCKERS The Lady Vols only had nine players available to play against George Washington on Dec. 1. Ten-nessee starting sophomore pivot Kelley Cain missed the game with George Washington due to a concus-sion suffered in the UCLA game after dropping in eight points and grabbing 11 rebounds against the Bruins. Cain also missed some time last season after suffering a concussion in practice. She has started fi ve games this season and averages 8.4 ppg and 8.6 rpg.

CALLING ALL POSTSThe Lady Vols went into the game with George

Washington on Dec. 1 pretty thin in the post. Side-lined were four post players -- 6’1” Amber Gray and 6’3” Faith Dupree for the season; 6’4” Vicki Baugh who is coming back from a torn ACL and 6’6” Kelley Cain who will miss due to a concussion. That left 6’1” rookie Taber Spani and a pair of 6’3” sophomores in Glory Johnson and Alyssia Brewer to shore up the middle for the Lady Vols.

has climbed into sole possession of fourth place on the Tennessee three-point career charts. She has 158 made treys for her career moving her ahead of Shan-non Bobbitt (2006-08). Ahead of Bjorklund are Brittany Jackson in third with 161...Kara Lawson in second with 256 and Shanna Zolman leading the pack with 266.

STAFFERS HAVE -- NEVER A FORMER PLAYER ...have come back and dropped an “L” on Coach Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols. Former Tennessee player and assistant coach Nikki Caldwell looked like her UCLA Bruins might be the fi rst to pull the upset on Nov. 28 in Knoxville. The Bruins grabbed a 10-point fi rst half lead and looked very confi dent heading into the locker room leading 27-25 at the break.

In the Tennessee locker room, Summitt was implor-ing her team for no more “negative history.” Referring back to last season when her young Lady Vols were responsible for a number of “negative history fi rsts.” The roll call goes like this: Sylvia Hatchell, Sha-ron Fanning, Jane Albright, Lea Henry, Nancy Darsch, Trish Roberts, Mickie DeMoss, Matthew Mitchell, Kellie Jolly Harper and Tanya Haave. UT coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assistant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but no former Lady Vol player has ever knocked off her mentor. Former assistant Carolyn Peck was the fi rst to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a 78-68 loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT’s 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech’s NCAA all-time 54-game winning streak). Former assistants Mick-ie DeMoss and last year Matthew Mitchell turned the trick as a head coaches at Kentucky, (DeMoss 66-63, on Jan. 26, 2006 and Mitchell 66-56 on Feb. 19, 2009), and Sylvia Hatchell managed to pull off the feat twice at North Carolina (75-63 on Mar. 28, 2006 and 70-57, Dec. 3, 2006). Former Lady Vol players turned head coaches have been less successful. Former Lady Vol All-America Patricia Roberts tried while head coach at Maine (0-2, lost 77-64 on Dec. 13, 1990 and 86-71 on Nov. 24, 1991). Former Lady Vol Olympian and point guard Lea Henry faced Summitt in the NCAA Tourna-ment with her Georgia State team and lost 98-68 on Mar. 15, 2002. Next to try to knock off Summitt was Kellie Jolly Harper with her Western Carolina team on Mar. 20, 2005. The Lady Catamounts lost 94-43. The most recent former Lady Vol hoopsters to take on their former coach: UT All-American and San Francisco head coach Tanya Haave. “LaMachine’s” Dons fell to UT on Nov. 15, 2008, 68-39. A little over a week later, Harper’s WCU team fell to Summitt’s Lady Vols, 83-56, on Nov. 25, 2008. The next player to try the knock-off - -UCLA’s Nikki Caldwell.

HOME SWEET HOME Much is made of the Lady Vols palatial locker room in Thompson-Boling Arena. The team lost the right to use the locker room following back-to-back losses last season to #7/10-ranked Duke (Feb. 16, 62-54) and Kentucky (Feb. 19, 66-56). Following the Lady Vols win over at #12/17-ranked Virginia on Nov. 22, 2009, Coach Pat Summitt announced in the post game talk to the team that they had earned their locker room back to thunderous cheers from the team.

RANKED TIDBITS Tennessee is 3-0 against ranked opponents this season in seven total games played. The Lady Vols opened the season with a 74-65 win over #7/4-ranked Baylor... took a 77-63 win on the road at #12/17-ranked Virginia and knocked off #17-ranked Texas, 78-58. Next game against a ranked opponent will come against #2-ranked Stanford on Dec. 19 in Palo Alto.

DUPREE DEALS WITH BACK PROBLEMS University of Tennessee Lady Vol Head Basket-ball Coach Pat Summitt announced on Nov. 23, 2009, that freshman center Faith Dupree will be sidelined this season. “Faith has been experiencing recurrent lower back pain,” explained Summitt. “Our medical staff (Director of Sports Medicine Jenny Moshak, team or-thopaedist Dr. Greg Mathien and team physician Dr. Becky Morgan) felt that the best course of action was to spend this season treating her. “We are disappointed for Faith and what she means to our team,” said Sum-mitt. “She worked really hard in the preseason drills and conditioning but now she needs time to focus on getting her back healthy.” Moshak, University of Ten-nessee Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medi-cine, has been treating Dupree for back pain for several weeks. “We are going to use this year to explore treat-

Tennessee’s roster now drops to 11 active players for the 2009-10 season. Also sitting out this year, follow-ing both shoulder and brain surgery, is 6-1 sophomore forward Amber Gray of West Chester, Ohio.

JOINING THE LADY VOL FOLD University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball head coach Pat Summitt announced the early signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2010-11 academic school year. Joining the eight-time NCAA Champions are signees Lauren Avant, a 5’9”, guard from Memphis, Tenn., (The Lausanne Collegiate School) and Meighan Simmons, a 5’9” guard from By-ron P. Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas.

UNBROKEN CIRCLE The 2009-10 Lady Vols are taking their “Circle of Infl uence” media guide them into a postgame center court jump circle huddle with their opponents. Before the game with Baylor, UT junior Angie Bjorklund invited the Lady Bears to join them for a postgame prayer. Each opponent has followed suit meeting at center court after the game for the moment of thanks.

WE HIT 1,100 The Tennessee Lady Vols have a proud and rich history of women’s basketball on “The Hill.” With the victory over Texas Tech on Nov. 17, the Lady Vols re-corded the 1100th win in program history.

BJORKLUND IS A WOODEN NOMINEE Lady Vol junior sharpshooter Angie Bjorklund is a preseason candidate for the John R. Wooden Award. She joins the initial list of student athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the frontrunners for college basketball’s most pres-tigious honor. This season, the Lady Vols will face a number of Wooden nominees including: Jayne Appel and Jeanette Pohlen (Stanford), Alysha Clark (Middle Tennessee), Allison Hightower (LSU), Ashley Houts (Georgia), Danielle Robinson (Oklahoma) and Monica Wright (Virginia). In late December, the Wooden Award Committee will release the Midseason Top 20 list, fol-lowed in March by the National Ballot, consisting of approximately 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The Women’s Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round dur-ing the NCAA Tournament. The 34th annual Wooden

Award ceremony, which will include the announce-ment of the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award, and the presentation of the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 9-11, 2010.

STRICKLEN IS ON THE NAISMITH LIST Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen has been named to the Naismith Player of the Year “watch list.” The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2009-10 college basketball sea-son. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Women’s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.

STRICKLEN DOUBLES UP ACCOLADES Lady Vol sophomore Shekinna Stricklen was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week (Nov. 9-15)after lead-ing the No. 8/9-ranked Lady Vols to a 74-65 win over the No. 7/4-ranked Baylor Lady Bears on Nov. 15 at Thompson-Boling Arena to open the 2009-10 season. The Morrilton, Ark., native scored 25 points, grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, dished out fi ve assists and tallied three steals. The game against the Lady Bears marked Stricklen’s third career double-double. Her 25 points were one off of her career-high 26 points, which were scored at No. 6/5-ranked Auburn last season.

600TH WIN Tennessee’s win over Baylor to open the 2009-10 season was Lady Vol Coach Pat Summitt’s 600th victory over a non-conference team. She is now 604-129 versus non-conference opposition over 36 sea-sons.

ESPNU ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP The Lady Vols took the ESPNU Road to the Championship (formerly the ESPNU Women’s Basket-ball Invitational) when it defeated Texas Tech in Nov. 17. The preseason women’s basketball doublehead-er, UConn defeated Texas in the night cap, is played in the same city as the women’s NCAA championship. The ESPNU Road to the Championship is an ESPN Regional TV (ERT) owned and operated event. San Antonio is the host city for the 2010 NCAA women’s basketball championship.

GET THIS... It’s a fact that Tennessee has produced some of the greatest players ever in women’s collegiate basket-ball. It’s a little known fact that there has only been one double-fi gure rebounder in the history of the program -- Olympian and Kodak All-American Patricia Rob-erts. Roberts hauled in 14.2 rpg (467 total) in her only season as a Lady Vol in 1976-77. She also claimed scoring honors with 29.9 ppg (987 points). In 2006-07, Candace Parker came the closest to a double-fi gure rebounding average but had to settle for 9.8 rpg.

POLLSTERS The Tennessee Lady Vols started the sea-son in somewhat unfamiliar territory in the Top 25 Preseason polls. The Associated Press placed UT in the eighth position to start the season, while the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll had UT in ninth spot. Last season, UT started in seventh in the AP and sixth in the coaches’ poll. Tennessee’s start in the AP poll is the lowest since the 1985-86 season when UT started in the number nine spot.

UT’S SEASON-OPENERS UNDER SUMMITT Over the last 36 years on opening day, the Lady Vols have won 33 times and lost just three contests. Coach Pat Summitt lost her very fi rst game as a col-lege head coach -- a heartbreaking one-point decision at home in Alumni Gym to Mercer, 84-83, on Dec. 7, 1974. The next time UT lost an opening game was in Knoxville on Nov. 21, 1981, to Stephen F. Austin, 80-74, in Stokely Athletics Center. Most recently, UT fell in their fi rst contest of the 1999-2000 campaign dropping a 69-64 decision to Louisiana Tech on Nov. 14, 1999 in Thompson-Boling Arena. Until the loss to the Lady Techsters in 1999, the Lady Vols had won 18 consecu-tive season openers.

ALWAYS A HOT TICKET Joe Arnone, UT Associate AD for Ticket Opera-tions, says Lady Vol season ticket sales have been steady despite the disappointment of the 2008-09 sea-son. As of Nov. 11th, 10,011 season tickets had been sold. Last season, over 10,400 season tickets were sold.

THOMPSON-BOLING ARENA • WELCOME TO “THE SUMMITT”

The playing court in the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus donned a new look for the 2005-06 season. After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA col-legiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 win over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, “The Summitt.” The fl oor had a complete overhaul with permanent logos of both the Lady Vols and Vols painted directly in front of the scorer’s table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with “SEC” reversed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TENNESSEE was given a new brighter color scheme, and “The Summitt,” Coach Summitt’s actual signature adorns the sidelines opposite the team benches.

300 WINS IN TBA Tennessee recorded its 300th win in Thompson-Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the Stan-ford Cardinal, 79-69 OT on Dec. 21, 2008. Seven years earlier, UT grabbed its 200th TBA win over the University of Southern California on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66. UT has now amassed a 312-20 (.942) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thompson-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 22-years ago. Along the way, the Lady Vols have produced nine fl aw-less home records in 1988-89 (15-0), 1991-92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998-99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0) and 2002-03 (16-0). UT also registered an NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan.

2, 1996.

JUST 20 LOSSES The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the 1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just seven times. UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2008-09 sea-sons. The 20 all-time losses at TBA have come at the hands of just 10 teams: Virginia (2008), Florida (2006), LSU (2008, 2006), Duke (2009, 2007, 2004), Connecti-cut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988).

HOME SWEET HOME -- OVER 400 HOME WINS The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Summitt took over as head coach in 1974. Summitt has won 91.4 percent of all home games in 36 years producing a 462-45 overall record. Home losses (in the Summitt era) include: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 19 in Stokely Athletics Center from 1976-87; and 20 in Thompson-Boling Arena.

100 POINT GAMES Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 69 times. The 1987-88 team hit triple dig-its in seven games to lead the NCAA.

IN OVERTIME Tennessee is 27-17 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04 with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66. It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99. UT’s 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. UT’s most recent OT affair was a 79-69 win over Stanford on Dec. 21, 2008, at home.

A LOOK AT ATTENDANCE The Tennessee Lady Vols staying power with the home fans is evidenced by the huge numbers who have turned out for games in Knoxville since 1990. Tennessee has won the attendance challenge 14 out of the last 20 years.

LADY VOL STREAKS The Lady Vols last loss at home was against Duke, 62-54, on Feb. 16, 2009, since then UT has won seven home games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Feb. 26, 2009 at LSU, since then, UT has won two road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Ball State, 71-55, in the 2009 NCAA First Round game on Mar. 22, 2009. Since that time, UT is 2-0 on a neutral court.

ELITE COMPANY Rookie forward/guard Taber Spani be-came the 13th Lady Vol player to start her very fi rst game as a Lady Vol when she started against Baylor. Last season, when Coach Pat Summitt started freshmen Shekinna Stricklen and Glory Johnson against San Francisco, it marked only the 11th and 12th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very fi rst game at Tennessee. The list of open-ing day rookie starters: Taber Spani 2009, Glory Johnson and Shekinna Stricklen, 2008, Angie Bjorklund, 2007, Candace Parker, 2005, Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jack-son 1999, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Hold-sclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.

THE NOD Last season, a record number of players – FIVE – were called on to start for the Lady Vols as rookies… Shekinna Stricklen (starter number 53), Glory Johnson (number 54), Briana Bass (55), Alicia Manning (56) and Kelley Cain (57) all earned starting assignments becoming the 53rd-57th freshmen to earn the honor. Angie Bjorklund became the 52nd all-time Lady Vol to start dur-ing her freshman season –she started in 30 of 38 games. Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season. Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt freshman Candace Parker played and started in all 36 games her rookie season in 2005-06. A season earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned starting nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting assignments and Alexis Hornbuckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rook-ies. The 2001-02 rookie class found three play-ers earn a starting nod as Loree Moore, Shyra Ely and Brittany Jackson all started at some point in their rookie careers.
