In order to address trans:pJrtation needs identified from both traffic and econcrnic stand:pJints, Governor Alexander recarmended, in February of this year, a three-cent increase in the gas and rrotor fuel tax. This tax would fund a program containing six interstate-type parkways and fi~een priority

/ projects, and would allow us to accelerate our existing primary highway program.

During Legislative hearings and reviews by local offficials and the general public, the Department received recarmendations that additional highway segments be included in the plan. Accordingly, we have revised the highway plan to include those projects which have sufficient justification, and are suhnitting a copy for your consideration. In the future, this plan will be updated periodically and used as the basis for preparation of the project listing which supports our annual budget request.

The Department considers these projects ' to be of most urgent need for improvement based on factor~ considered at this time. However, it is necessary that changing conditions be monitored continuously and the listing updated periodically.
