Originally slated for March 3rd, the game was postponed at that time because of poor weather conditions in the mid-state area. The two squads have already met once this season back during the Tennessee Invitational with the home-standing Big Orange taking an 11-2 (5 inn.) victory on March 13th at Lee Softball Stadium. During that match-up UT freshman Raven Chavanne went 3-for-4 with an RBI, seniors Nicole Kajitani (2-for-2) and Tiffany Huff (1-for-1) each knocked in three runs and sophomore Jessica Spigner delivered a 1-for-2, two-RBI effort. Sophomore Cat Hosfield earned the win from the circle by allowing just a single run on one hit over 2.2 innings of relief work. The Orange & White lead the all-time series between the two programs, 15-0, and are 4-0 all-time at TTU. The last visit to Cookevile by the Lady Vols occurred back during the 2005 campaign as Tennessee squeaked out 1-0 and 3-0 victories to sweep a hard-fought doubleheader from the Golden Eagles. Great Against Teams In-State! Tennessee has made a habit of dominating its series’ with in-state schools since starting the UT program in 1996. All-time, the Orange & White is now an incredible 94-3 overall against a combination of 10 Tennessee schools. Co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly have gone 59-0 against in-state programs since arriving at Rocky Top. UT HAS ALSO WON 65 STRAIGHT GAMES AGAINST IN-STATE OPPONENTS SINCE SUFFERING ITS LAST DEFEAT BACK ON MARCH 22, 2000, AGAINST MTSU. In fact, two of Tennessee’s three in-state losses came against Chattanooga when coached by...Karen Weekly in 1999. The Lady Vols are 17-0 against Austin Peay, 15-0 against Tennessee Tech and 14-0 ver- sus Belmont, 16-1 versus Middle Tennessee, 13-0 in games with ETSU. UT is also 8-0 versus Tennessee State, 6-0 against Lipscomb, 3-2 against Chattanooga and 1-0 versus Memphis and UT-Martin. Renfroe’s On a Roll... Over her last 16 appearances in the circle freshman hurler Ivy Renfroe has been on quite the roll. The Jackson, Tenn., native is 11-0 with a 1.18 ERA and 64 K’s in 65.1 innings. During that stretch she has recorded six complete game victories, two solo shutouts, three saves and her first career no-hitter (Western Carolina -- April 8). She’s not the only UT pitcher that’s been getting it done, however, since opening the double- header versus Kentucky on March 23rd. Sophomore Cat Hosfield (5-1, 1.20 ERA, 27 K’s, 40.2 IP) and freshman Andi Williamson (2.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2K) have joined Renfroe to help the Tennessee staff post a 1.17 ERA over 108 innings with 93 K’s while limiting the opposition to just a .189 batting average. Included in that period for the pitching staff was a season-high shutout streak of 22 innings. The 2010 UT Offense Is Productive... 2010 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOFTBALLoffenses through the opening 45 games. It’s safe to say that this year’s Big Orange offense is among the best UT has had in its history, comparable if not better than those UT boasted during its three straight top-three national finishes at the Women’s College World Series from 2005-07. THE 2010 VERSION IS ALSO DRAWING WALKS AT A RECORD PACE, currently 10 free passes ahead of the 45-game total for the 2008 squad that eventually set the school record of 268.

Taking a Look at the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) The first NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) has been released for 2010 and the Southeastern Conference boasts an amazing eight teams in the Top 30. THE LADY VOLS ARE CURRENTLY SITTING AT NO. 20 and are sure to climb with series left this season against RPI No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Florida and No. 9 LSU. The RPI is one of the factors utilized by the NCAA in handing out tourney seeds and slots in the annual Field of 64.

Watch Out For the Lady Vol “Big Inning” The Lady Vols have made the “Big Inning” a major part of its offensive repetoire in 2010. So far this year, Tennessee has plated at least three runs in an inning a staggering 52 TIMES. In fact, UT has posted at least one three-run outburst in a frame during 36 of its 45 games played this season.

Raven’s Among the Final Top 25! The top 25 finalists for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year trophy have been announced and despite not being on the preseason watch list, freshman Raven Chavanne has made the cut to 25. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native’s inclusion makes it seven straight seasons a UT player has been among the final 25 for the prestigious honor, including former and current All-Americans such as Monica Abbott, Tonya Callahan, Lindsay Schutzler and Tiffany Huff.

Ivy Says No-No! Freshman Ivy Renfroe fired the first no-hitter of her collegiate career, the 34th no-no in Lady Vol history and the first individual no-hitter for Tennessee softball since Monica Abbott’s 2-0 mas-terpiece over #7 Texas A&M at the 2007 Women’s College World Series by downing Western Carolina on April 8, 11-0 (5 inn.). The 5-10 right hander struck out seven Catamounts and walked

just one in a near-perfect effort, facing just one batter over the minimum. Current sophomore Cat Hosfield and former Lady Vol Ashton Ward worked a combined no-hitter (doesn’t count in the official stats) last season against San Jose State.

Should be Arrested for Stealing Tennessee has three players in particular who should be cited for stealing by local law enforcement officials. Between freshmen RAVEN CHAVANNE and KAT DOTSON and junior KELLY GRIEVE (19 STEALS), the trio has combined to total 73 thefts on the season. CHAVANNE (29 STEALS) AND DOTSON (25 STEALS) HAVE ALREADY PASSED GRIEVE’S SINGLE-SEASON FRESHMAN RECORD OF 18 THEFTS set back in 2008 as well as the 2004 total of 16 steals by former Lady Vol All-American speedster and then rookie Lindsay Schutzler.

That’s One Lucky Fan! Sophomore third baseman Jessica Spigner made a Lady Vol softball fan’s day during Tennessee’s 9-1 (5 inn.) win over Middle Tennessee on March 31. The Santa Clarita, Calif., native came through big-time for a UT student in attendance as Emily Ward won a $700 prize as part of a “If a Lady Vol Homers During the Inning” marketing promotion. The solo homer traveled well over the wall in left during the fourth inning and marked Spigner’s seventh big fly of the campaign. Keep The Accolades Coming... Add even more accolades to an ever-growing list for the 2010 Tennessee Lady Vols. For their outstanding efforts in doubleheader sweeps of Kentucky and Ole Miss, freshman right fielder KAT DOTSON and rookie right-handed pitcher IVY RENFROE picked up weekly awards on March 29-30. Dotson was the big winner, reaping not only SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK honors (3/29) but also adding the prestigious USA SOFTBALL NATIONAL COLLEGIATE PLAYER OF THE WEEK award (3/30) after hitting .769 (10-of-13) for the week with six RBI, a streak of seven consecutive hits and a skein of reaching safely over nine consecutive plate appearances. Renfroe reaped her first career selection as the SEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK (3/29) after going 3-0 in the circle with a miniscule 0.82 ERA. In perhaps her finest performance to date, the Jackson, Tenn., native fired a complete-game, two-hitter in downing Ole Miss, 4-2, and picked up her initial career save with a perfect seventh inning of work in the finale victory against the Rebels. Freshman teammate Raven Chavanne (SEC Player of the Week on 2/22 and SEC Freshman of the Week on 3/1) and Renfroe (SEC Freshman of the Week on 3/8) garnered Tennessee’s previous weekly awards in 2010.

“The Dynamic Duo”...And They’re Just Rookies No they aren’t super heroines...but on the softball field, they’ve been about as good as they could be during their first season at Tennessee. As of April 11th the Tennessee Lady Vol softball team boasts two of the top 20 hitters in NCAA Division I by average and they are both exciting freshmen! Left fielder RAVEN CHAVANNE currently sits in sixth position nationally with a .497 average while right fielder KAT DOTSON is 20th at .444. The duo has joined junior Kelly Grieve in setting the table consistently all season from the No. 1 and No. 3 spots in the order for UT, the country’s second-best hitting team (.344) and seventh-highest scoring squad (7.17 runs-per-game).

A Touch of CLASS! Lady Vol senior catcher/first baseman TIFFANY HUFF has been chosen as one of 10 NCAA DIVISION I SOFTBALL FINALISTS FOR THE FOURTH-ANNUAL LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD. The honor is presented to a senior softball player who best demonstrates her ability on the field, in the community and in the classroom. The Saugus, Calif., native owns a 3.78 grade-point average in special education and was honored in 2009 as a second-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. This marks the fourth straight season that the Big Orange have had one of the 10 national finalists for the prestigious honor.

Quick Out of the Gate The Lady Vols waste no time in jumping on their opponents this season. Amazingly, TENNESSEE HAS TALLIED AT LEAST ONE RUN DURING THE FIRST INNING IN 24 OF THEIR 45 CONTESTS IN 2010 AND ARE 24-0 IN THOSE MATCH-UPS. UT has already posted one six-game, first-inning scoring streak this season. The largest outburst of the season in the initial frame was eight runs against Weber State. IN FACT, 68 OF THE LADY VOLS’ RUNS HAVE COME IN THE FIRST INNING WHILE 216 OF UT’S 320 TOTAL RUNS (68%) HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE OPENING THREE FRAMES.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE STANDINGS

Just Put Raven Out There From the Start...She’ll Usually Be There Anyway Freshman Raven Chavanne is making a habit of getting the Lady Vol offense off and running to open games. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native has now reached base leading off UT’s first turn at the plate 23 TIMES IN TENNESSEE’S 45 CONTESTS this season. Included in that total are 17 singles, five walks and once reaching via an error. In opportunities leading off any inning for Tennessee, CHAVANNE HAS NOW REACHED 40 TIMES IN 69 TOTAL CHANCES OR 58% OF THE TIME she’s had an opportunity to set the table for the UT offense.

Slap-Hitting U? Tennessee has a long and storied history of exceptional slap hitting specialists, and this year’s group is proving to be no exception. The top three in the usual Lady Vol line-up, RAVEN CHAVANNE, KELLY GRIEVE AND KAT DOTSON, do a terrific job setting the table with their impressive speed and also possess the ability to swing away with extra-base or HR power. Between the three, THE TRIO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR A STAGGERING 181 TOTAL HITS (45% OF TENNESSEE’S HIT PRODUCTION THUS FAR IN 2010), 143 RUNS (45% OF THE SCORING LOAD), 79 RBIS AND 73 STOLEN BASES (78% OF THE THEFTS).

Didn’t Think It Would Ever End! Tennessee’s doubleheader opener against the Kentucky Wildcats on March 23rd turned into a marathon battle that lasted 10 innings and stretched three hours and seven minutes before deter-mining a winner. Thankfully for the Orange & White a walk-off single from freshman Kat Dotson in the 10th plated sophomore Ashley Andrews with the winning run as UT battled back from an early 2-0 deficit and out of a 3-2, 10th-inning hole to prevail, 4-3. Kentucky pitcher Chanda Bell fired 200 pitches during her 10.1 innings of work while the two teams combined to throw 354 total pitches. IN THE PROCESS THE LADY VOLS PICKED UP THE PROGRAM’S 200TH ALL-TIME SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE VIC-TORY.

Ring-A-Round the Lineup Card Tennessee’s offense has made a habit in recent years of taking numerous trips through the batting order while putting up big run totals. So far in 2010, the Lady Vols have already turned the trick 23 TIMES. ***In fact, UT has already ventured through its line-up more times than the 2007 NCAA Runner-Up Tennessee Lady Vol squad did during its full 71-game slate (18 times), more than the 2009 team (11 times total) and more than the 2008 UT squad (21 times). The squad this year’s Big Orange team perhaps most closely resembles from an offensive standpoint, the 2006 Lady Vols, raced through the order a remarkable 33 times in 73 games played.*** A list of the turns through the batting line-up is below:

Who Scores First REALLY Matters A trend is developing in 2010 as the team that scores first during Tennessee softball contests usually ends up putting a W in the victory column. THE LADY VOLS ARE 30-3 THIS YEAR WHEN TALLYING THE FIRST RUN ON THE SCOREBOARD AND JUST 7-5 WHEN THEIR OPPONENT SCORES FIRST. The only times that stat didn’t go to form was against Weber State on Feb. 20 at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., in game one of a three-game set at Mississippi State on March 9, versus Tennessee Tech on March 13 and in the opener versus both Kentucky on March 23 and Ole Miss on March 27. WSU had to be feeling good after putting up a run in the top of the first. Tennessee scored eight times in the bottom half, however, on the way to a dominant 21-2 (5 inn.) triumph. At MSU, the Bulldogs raced to a 3-0 lead after one inning and watched as UT put up one tally in the second, three in the fourth and four runs in the sixth on the way to an 8-4 victory. Tenn. Tech jumped in front 1-0 after the top of the first, but saw UT register 11 runs over the next three frames in an 11-2 (5 inn.) whitewashing. Kentucky led 2-0 early in the DH opener before the Lady Vols rallied for a 4-3, 10 inn. triumph. Tennessee scored first in all three games against #6 Georgia, but dropped the last two games in the series. Ole Miss went up 2-0 in the first but gave up three runs in the bottom half of the frame as UT prevailed, 4-2. In the odd series at Auburn, everything went against form as UT scored first in the opener and lost on a walk-off HR, 2-1, then watched AU score first in each of the final two contests only to lose to Tennessee, 2-1 and 5-3.

Home Sweet Home -- Got Our 300th Home Win! Tennessee truly enjoys the friendly confines of Lee Softball Stadium, owning a 68-17 overall record (.800 win percentage) over three seasons at the new facility. At its old home in Tyson Park, the Lady Vols were 241-72 in 12 years for a .770 win percentage. Combining the two home sites the Big Orange is now 309-89 (.776) in Knoxville, currently in its 15th season of softball. UT IS CURRENTLY 20-2 AT HOME IN 2010 AND GOT THE 300TH HOME WIN IN TENNESSEE HISTORY ON MARCH 20TH WITH A 5-4 WIN OVER #6 GEORGIA.

Huff Hits Hallowed Milestones With an RBI double to left center during the second inning of Tennessee’s 10-4 win at Mississippi State (March 10), senior catcher/first baseman Tiffany Huff reached the 200-HIT MARK in her illustrious career wearing the Orange & White. The Saugus, Calif., native is the 10th Lady Vol all-time to reach the 200-hit plateau and joins her former teammates Lindsay Schutzler, Tonya Callahan and India Chiles as members of the impressive list. The All-American also just reached the 200-RBI MARK on a bases loaded walk during the 6-3 doubleheader finale win over Ole Miss. By achieving that milestone, she joined former Lady Vols Callahan and Kristi Durant and the only three UT players to have recorded 200 hits and 200 RBIs during their careers.

We’re Building Quite a Schedule Résumé When the Weeklys were making out this year’s schedule, they weren’t bashful in testing their young squad with ranked opposition. TENNESSEE HAS ALREADY PLAYED SIX TOP 16 TEAMS THIS YEAR AND POSTED AN IMPRESSIVE 4-4 RECORD IN THOSE MATCH-UPS. UT owns wins over #10 Oklahoma, #13 Texas, #16 Ohio State and #6 Georgia with losses to #6 UCLA, #10 Stanford and #6 Georgia (two losses). The loss to the Cardinal was by just one run, and the Lady Vols actually led 7-6 in the sixth inning before falling late. UT had leads of 5-1 and 6-1 heading into the sixth frame in the two losses to #6 Georgia before dropping those match-ups, 10-6 and 7-6 (8 inn.).

The Grand Salami! After not registering a grand slam during the entire 2009 season, the Tennessee Lady Vols are off to a powerful start with FOUR GRAND SLAMS THUS FAR IN 2010. Sophomore Jessica Spigner and freshman Raven Chavanne got things off to a rousing start during the opening two weekends as UT’s first two HR’s of the season were of the grand slam variety. Sophomore Shelby Burchell blasted a pinch hit grand slam in the sixth inning against Campbell to bring Tennessee back from a 6-4 deficit to an eventual 9-6 victory. Most recently, senior Erinn Webb hammered a grand slam in the 7-6 (8 inn.) loss to #6 Georgia. The grand slam marked the first for all four players in their Lady Vol careers and RATES AS THE MOST GRAND SLAMS HIT BY THE BIG ORANGE IN A SEASON SINCE ALSO HITTING FOUR IN 2007. Extra Softball is Often No Trouble for the Lady Vols Tennessee entered the 2010 campaign on an impressive streak. THE LADY VOLS HAD WON THEIR LAST SIX EXTRA-INNING CONTESTS DATING BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF THE ‘09 SEASON. Included in that skein from 2009 were an 11-inning vic-tory over Auburn (2-1), a 10-inning win against BYU (4-0) and eight-inning triumphs over UCF (1-0), No. 25 Kansas (4-2), Cal Poly (8-6) and No. 6 Oklahoma (6-5). Unfortunately, the streak came to an end on March 21st when UT dropped a hard-fought, 7-6, contest to #6 Georgia in

Page 6: Tennessee-Tennessee Tech Notes

eight innings. UT IS NOW 7-1 IN ITS LAST EIGHT EXTRA INNING MATCH-UPS AFTER DOWNING KENTUCKY 4-3 IN 10 INNINGS ON MARCH 23RD.

Getting Off to a Good League Start is Important The Big Orange boosted its all-time mark in conference-opening contests to 9-5 by defeating Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., on March 9th by an 8-4 count. Freshman right fielder Kat Dotson led a 12-hit Tennessee offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, while sophomore third baseman Jessica Spigner went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and her team-best sixth homer of the campaign. Freshman pitcher Ivy Renfroe picked up her first collegiate SEC win by allowing one earned run on five hits with eight K’s over 5.0 innings.

The SEC Awards Are Colored Orange! Tennessee received one weekly honor from the Southeastern Conference office for three consecutive weeks over Feb. 22-March 8 and then doubled up on March 29 with both the Player and Pitcher of the Week. Freshman pitcher Ivy Renfroe joined the parade on March 8th by being chosen as the SEC Freshman of the Week for her efforts at the Tennessee Classic. The Jackson, Tenn., native was 2-0 in the circle with a 0.81 ERA and 21 K’s in 17.1 innings. Fellow teammate and rookie Raven Chavanne already has been selected as the SEC Player of the Week (Feb. 22) and SEC Freshman of the Week (March 1) this season. On March 29th Kat Dotson reaped SEC Player of the Week honors after hitting .769 (10-of-13) against Kentucky and Ole Miss while Renfroe was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with an 0.82 ERA and her first career save in four appearances.

Home Openers = Victory Throughout Lady Vol softball history, the first contest of the year in the friendly confines of either Tyson Park or Lee Softball Stadium has usually equaled victory for the Orange & White. Tennessee has won its last 10 home openers dating back to a 6-5 home-opening loss to Kansas on March 10, 2000, and holds a 14-1 mark all-time in Knoxville lidlifters. Under the guidance of co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly, UT is a perfect 9-0 in such match-ups after downing Ohio, 6-0, on March 5 at Lee Softball Stadium.

Huff Went Streaking! Already owning a career-best 17-game hitting streak from 2009, senior catcher/first baseman Tiffany Huff posted a 10-game hitting skein this season from February 14th against #11 Oklahoma through Feb. 27th against #16 Ohio State. During her double-digit streak, the Saugus, Calif., native posted a .448 (13-of-29) average with six runs scored, two doubles, a HR and 10 RBIs.

Dominant in February and March Since Weeklys Arrival Since the Weeklys arrived in 2002 to take over the Tennessee program, the team has seen incredible success during the opening month of the season. In February, the Big Orange boast a record of 129-22-1 since starting 2002 and are a staggering 82-8 since the beginning of 2005. Tennessee won 33 straight February contests in a streak that stretched from the opening of the 2006 campaign through part of 2008 until a 4-1 loss to USF on Feb. 17, 2008. The only February defeats since ‘05 are to No. 1 California (2005), Notre Dame (2005), USF (2008), No. 21 and eventual ‘09 national champ Washington (2009), No. 6 UCLA (2010), UCF (2010), Pacific (2010) and No. 10 Stanford (2010). IN THE MONTH OF MARCH, TENNESSEE OWNS A 161-41 RECORD SINCE OPENING THE 2002 CAMPAIGN. The best month during that eight-year stretch occurred in 2007 when the Lady Vols went 24-2 overall.

That’s So Raven...”Multiple SEC Honoree” Freshman lead-off hitter Raven Chavanne has been playing collegiate softball for only a few weeks now, but she has already made quite a mark on the Southeastern Conference. In the past few weeks alone, Chavanne has been chosen as the SEC Player of the Week (Feb. 22) and the SEC Freshman of the Week (March 1) for her staggering efforts during UT’s 10-day road trip to New Mexico and California. At the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native went 17-of-20 at the plate for an .850 batting average, posted a double, two triples, a grand slam (her first collegiate HR) and tied for the team lead with 10 RBIs. She also singled to lead-off all five contests, posted three perfect 4-for-4 games and knocked in a career-high six RBIs in the 21-2 (5 inn.) victory over Weber State. Counting a walk she drew in the seventh inning versus #10 Oklahoma on Feb. 14th, CHAVANNE REACHED BASE SAFELY VIA HIT, WALK, ERROR OR FIELDER’S CHOICE IN A STAGGERING 22 STRAIGHT PLATE APPEARANCES. She also posted a STREAK OF EIGHT CONSECUTIVE BASE HITS, GOOD ENOUGH TO TIE FOR NINTH ALL-TIME IN NCAA DIVISION I HISTORY. During the Cathedral City Classic, Chavanne posted a .500 average with four steals and three runs scored. Her total numbers for the entire nine-game trip were: a .706 batting average (24-of-34) with 16 runs scored, a double, two triples, a grand slam HR, 11 RBIs, a .941 slugging percent-age, a .722 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases.

A Powerful Statement... During its five-game tournament title run at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., the Lady Vols made quite a statement by outscoring its five opponents by a 66-15 margin, hitting .467 as a team, posting 11 doubles, four triples and seven home runs, swiping 12 bases and registering double-digit runs in each contest. Individually, Raven Chavanne hit .850 with 10 RBIs, freshman Kat Dotson posted a .600 average with two doubles, two triples and 10 RBIs, senior Tiffany Huff recorded a .583 mark with two doubles, a HR and seven RBIs and sophomore Ashley Andrews blasted two homers as part of a .455 weekend with nine RBIs. In the circle, sophomore Cat Hosfield was 3-0 with 20 K’s in 16 innings, while freshman Ivy Renfroe went 2-0 while limiting opponents to a .235 average.

On the Road Again... Willie Nelson’s famous song should have been Tennessee’s theme as the Lady Vols wrapped up a marathon 10-day trip through Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Cathedral City, Calif., over Feb. 19-28. During the 4,786-mile jaunt UT posted a 7-2 record with wins over Weber State, Bradley, Cleveland State, St. Mary’s, New Mexico State, Syracuse and #16 Ohio State and close losses to Pacific (3-4) and #10 Stanford (7-8). The Lady Vols hit .371 as a team, averaged just over nine runs-per-game, blasted 12 doubles, five triples and 10 homers, stole 18 bases and won the championship of the Troy Cox Classic. Freshman Raven Chavanne had a tremendous jaunt out west, hitting .706 (24-of-34) at the plate over nine contests and joined sophomore Ashley

Andrews as each knocked in a team-high 11 runs. Freshman Kat Dotson and senior Tiffany Huff each registered 10 RBI, while sophomore Jessica Spigner knocked in eight tallies. An Unprecedented Starting Debut Tennessee freshman right hander Ivy Renfroe made her initial start for the Orange & White a memorable one by allowing just four hits over 4.0 innings of work in a 4-2 victory over #10 Oklahoma on Valentine’s Day at the NTC Division I Elite Invitational in Clermont. Fla. With the victory the Humboldt, Tenn., native became the ninth Lady Vol pitcher to win her starting debut, but more importantly, became the first UT pitcher to beat a ranked team during her initial start at Rocky Top. Not even four-time All-American Monica Abbott can claim that fact.

A Fixture in the Rankings The Lady Vols are making a habit of finding themselves in the rankings according to the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. TENNESSEE HAS NOW BEEN RANKED IN EACH OF THE LAST 98 POLLS DATING BACK TO THE PRE-SEASON RELEASE OF THE 2004 SEASON. A big opening weekend in ‘04 boosted UT from unranked into the Top 25 at No. 19 and the squad hasn’t left since.

No Longer Streaking in Season Openers Tennessee is now 8-7 all-time in season openers and 6-3 under co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly after seeing its six lid-lifter winning streak snapped on Feb. 13, 2010 in a loss to #6 UCLA in Clermont, Fla. The last previous season-opening loss had come back in 2003 versus San Jose State as UT dropped a 3-1 decision.

We Love the Spotlight! The Tennessee Lady Vols are currently set to be featured on television eight times during the 2010 campaign. Five of UT’s televised contests will take place within the friendly confines of Lee Softball Stadium in Knoxville. The Big Orange made its television debut on March 20th in a Saturday home doubleheader against No. 7 Georgia as CSS broadcast both match-ups live. The Orange & White’s next TV date came on Sunday, March 28th at home versus Ole Miss on FOX Sport South but it was rained out. Tennessee visited Auburn where Sunday’s 5-3 win in the series finale (April 11) was shown via FOX Sport South. During the final two weekends of the regular season Tennessee might as well call ESPN home. The second game of UT’s three-contest set against No. 2 Alabama on May 1 will be broadcast live at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, while the series finale on May 2 will be distributed via ESPNU at 4 p.m. ET. Finally, the Lady Vols will play host to No. 13 LSU over May 8-9 with the series opener set for a noon Saturday start time on ESPN. The final game of the set with the Bayou Bengals will be contested on May 9, at 2 p.m. on ESPNU. SINCE HEADING OUT TO OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA., FOR ITS FIRST TRIP TO THE WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES IN 2005, THE TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOFTBALL TEAM HAS BEEN FEATURED ON TELEVISION A STAGGERING 48 TIMES. AN AMAZING 29 OF THOSE 48 HAVE BEEN ON THE ESPN FAMILY OF NETWORKS.

Huff and Grieve Haul Preseason Honors The annual Watch List for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award has been announced and the Lady Vols are again well represented among the 50 players currently being considered for the honor. Senior catcher/first baseman Tiffany Huff and junior center fielder Kelly Grieve made the cut, marking the fourth time in the past five seasons that Tennessee has had at least two players chosen to the national watch list. For the third consecutive season Huff has been included, making it seven consecutive years at least one Lady Vol has been chosen to the pres-tigious watch list. The Saugus, Calif., native and Top 25 finalist last season enters the new campaign fresh off a year in which she set single-season career highs for batting average (.399 on 63-of-158), runs scored (48), hits (63), home runs (eight), RBIs (67), total bases (102), slugging (.646) and on-base percentage (.522) and stolen bases (11), while adding 13 doubles, a triple and 43 walks. Her 67 total RBIs rated her fourth in the SEC and a 1.14 RBI-per-game average placed her fifth in NCAA Division I in that category. A 2009 second-team Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American, NFCA All-Southeast Region and second-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American, Huff started all 59 games for the Big Orange at either first base or behind the plate. Huff currently resides in the top eight in Lady Vol history in career doubles (42), home runs (17), RBIs (175), on-base (.536) and slugging percentage (.460). A Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region selection as a sophomore in 2009, Grieve wreaked havoc on the opposition all season from her position at the top of the Tennessee batting order. The slap-hitting Asheville, N.C., native posted a .393 batting average on 79-of-201 hitting at the plate, mostly from the lead-off spot, with four doubles, four triples and 23 RBIs. After breaking the UT freshman single-season stolen base record in 2008, Grieve also added the Lady Vol sophomore single-season theft mark in 2009 with 39 steals in 42 attempts to break the record held by the former All-American Lindsay Schutzler (2005). She ranked among the SEC’s top five in hits all season long, tallied a team-best 25 multi-hit games and added three multi-RBI contests. Included in her outstanding performances last season was a school-record-tying five-hit game with a career-high five RBIs in an 18-0 (5 inn.) rout of Bowling Green on Feb. 27. Grieve already ranks sixth all-time in Lady Vol history in stolen bases with 57 thefts in 64 attempts after only two seasons wearing the Orange & White.

Making a Memorable First Impression On Feb. 14th in Clermont, Fla., Tennessee freshmen hurler Ivy Renfroe became the ninth Lady Vol to win during her starting debut and in the process also became the first UT pitcher to down a ranked team in her initial start. Former Lady Vols Christy Anch, Sarah Ayres, Leslie Poole, Buffy Walker, Megan Rhodes, Monica Abbott, Ashton Ward and Cat Hosfield join Renfroe as the only pitchers to claim their initial starts at Tennessee. Abbott tossed a no-hitter in her collegiate lidlifter in an 8-0 win over St. Mary’s to open the 2004 campaign while Rhodes hurled two-hit ball in a 6-1 win over DePaul. Maybe We Should Consider Pac 10 Membership? The Lady Vols have won 15 OF THEIR LAST 23 GAMES against members of the high-profile Pac-10 Conference in a period stretching from 2005-10. In opening weekend action, Tennessee lost a match-up to #6 UCLA on Feb. 13, 2010, at the NTC Division I Elite Invitational in Clermont, Fla. In Cathedral City, Calif., UT dropped a razor-thin 8-7 decision to #10 Stanford at the Cathedral City Classic on Feb. 25, 2010. Last year versus the league, UT lost a tough 2-1 decision on Feb. 6th to eventual national champion Washington in St. George, Utah, and then downed Oregon State at the Cathedral City Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., on Feb. 21st by a 4-0 count. Also included in that five-year span are a pair of victories over UCLA (1-3 loss to #7 UCLA at 2005 WCWS, 4-3 win against the No. 1 Bruins at WCWS in 2006; 6-1 win in 2007 in Palm Springs), a win over #9 Arizona State (3-1, nine inn. W at 2006 WCWS), four wins over Arizona (1-0 win against the No. 3 Wildcats at the 2005 WCWS, 1-0 win over No. 3 Arizona at 2006 WCWS, 0-6 loss to No. 3 Wildcats at 2006 WCWS, 1-0 over No. 4 Arizona at 2007 WCWS, 3-0 win over No. 4 Arizona in title series at the 2007 WCWS, 1-0 in 10 inn. loss to No. 4 Arizona in title series at 2007 WCWS, 5-0 loss to No. 4 Arizona in title series at the 2007 WCWS), wins over #18 Oregon (1-0 win at 2006 Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., 2006) and the #20 Ducks in Cathedral City, Calif., in 2008, a triumph against #8 Washington (2-1 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in 2005) and two wins against both #4 Stanford (2-0 and 6-0 wins in 2005 NCAA Super Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif.) and Oregon State (2005 and 2008).

Through the Years for UT The Lady Vols are in their 15th season of softball. The first six seasons were under the direction of Jim Beitia, while Feb. 12th began the ninth year of the tenure of Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly.

Looking Upwards in the Eastern Division -- During the Preseason In a preseason poll of the Southeastern Conference’s 11 softball coaching staffs, the Tennessee Lady Vols were picked to finish third in the league’s Eastern Division. With 25 points the Big Orange trailed the two-time defending conference champions, the Florida Gators (13 points), and Georgia (18 points) in the division race with Kentucky (34 points) and South Carolina (46 points) rounding out the five programs of the SEC East. The defending Western Division champ Alabama Crimson Tide (12 points) was selected to repeat its division championship as well as take the SEC’s overall regular season crown. The gap between the Tide and second-place LSU was razor-thin at just five points as the Bayou Bengals were one of four squads (Alabama, Florida, Georgia and LSU) to receive a first-place vote for the league title. Auburn rated third with 33 tallies, while Mississippi State (39 points), Ole Miss (40 points) and Arkansas (54 points) completed the West standings.

Charting the No-Hitters...UT Now Has 34 No-No’s with Eight Perfect Games The Lady Vol program owns a staggering 34 no-hitters in program history and eight perfect games. The majority belong to former four-time All-American and Olympian Monica Abbott. The most recent no-hitter came on April 8, 2010, as freshman Ivy Renfroe added her name to the

lengthy list with a one-walk, seven-strikeout blanking of Western Carolina in UT’s 11-0 (5 inn.) rout. Current sophomore Cat Hosfield and former Lady Vol Ashton Ward added their name to the list, at least with a combined no-no, during UT’s 2009 stay at the BYU Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah by working together to no-hit San Jose State. A Top 25 national finalist for the 2009 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Trophy, Huff picked up Second-Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American honors, a Second-Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American selection and nods to the NFCA All-Southeast Region and Second-Team All-SEC squads. She made 2009 her breakout campaign by setting single-season career highs in batting average (.399), runs (48), hits (63), home runs (eight), RBIs (67), total bases (102), slugging (.646) and on-base percentage (.522) and stolen bases (11), while adding 13 doubles and 43 walks...Her 67 RBIs rated her fourth in the SEC and her 1.14 RBI-per-game average placed her fifth in NCAA Division I in that category.

2 KELLY GRIEVEOF, 5-4, Junior, Asheville, N.C. Grieve continued to wreak havoc on opponents during her sophomore campaign, adding the UT single-season sophomore record for stolen bases to her resume by going 39-of-42 on theft attempts. That broke the record for-merly held by three-time NFCA All-American Lindsay Schutzler. Rated sec-ond on the Lady Vol team with a .393 batting average and finished fourth in the SEC in total hits for the year with 79. Also scored 48 runs, delivered four doubles, four triples and knocked in 23 runs despite serving as a slap-hitting specialist. Also registered a squad-high 25 multi-hit games in ‘09 and equaled the Big Orange single-game record with five base knocks in a perfect 5-for-5, five-RBI effort in a rout of Bowling Green.

9 JESSICA SPIGNER3B/P, 5-8, Sophomore, Santa Clarita, Calif. Wasted little time becoming known on a national level by hitting .322 with a team-best 14 doubles, a UT freshman record 14 home runs and 48 RBIs, while leading the squad in total bases (113) and posting a .638 slugging percentage. Her 14 big flies broke former Lady Vol Carrie Swinford’s freshman school record of 13 set back in 1996. The HR total rated Spigner sixth in the final SEC statistics and tied for the fourth-most homers by a freshman in all of NCAA Division I. She registered 16 multi-hit and 12 multi-RBI contests and homered in four consecutive games from March 11-18 against Belmont, South Carolina (two games) and Middle Tennessee. Also fired five strong innings at #8 Georgia to pick up her first pitching win, 6-3.

8 CAT HOSFIELDP, 5-9, Sophomore, Murfreesboro, Tenn. Hosfield opened her UT career as the Lady Vols’ workhorse in the circle, firing the second most innings in the SEC in 2009 (257.1). The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native tied for second in the league in victories with 28, rated fourth in strikeouts (221) and 11th in opposing batting average (.222). She was honored as the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 23rd after posting a 4-0 record with a 1.11 ERA and 27 K’s in 25.1 innings at the prestigious Cathedral City Classic. During the event, Hosfield fired a com-plete-game, one-hit shutout over Loyola Marymount, two-hit #15 Massachusetts and relieved in wins over Hawai’i and Cal Poly. During the year she also beat No. 6 Oklahoma (twice), No. 18 LSU, No. 25 Kansas and Auburn (three times).

00 NICOLE KAJITANIUTL, 5-3, Senior, San Bernardino, Calif. Improved her offensive numbers across the board in 2009 by hitting .256 and establishing single-season career-bests in starts (37), hits (31), runs scored (22), RBIs (21), triples (two), home runs (four), stolen bases (11-of-13), total bases (51) and slugging percentage (.421). Received her first career selection as the SEC Player of the Week (4/13) after her finest offensive week as a Lady Vol...Over a five-game stretch including a DH at Kentucky and a three-game series versus Auburn, Kajitani hit .450 with two doubles, a game-winning triple, two HR’s and nine RBIs. Included were a 3-for-4, career-high six-RBI game in a win over the Wildcats and a walk-off, two-RBI triple that brought Tennessee back from a 2-1 deficit in the seventh inning to a 3-2 victory and a series sweep versus AU.

22 ASHLEY ANDREWSSS/C, 5-7, Sophomore, Tumwater, Wash. Held down the starting shortstop spot for the Lady Vols throughout all 59 contests during her freshman cam-paign clad in the Orange & White. The Tumwater, Wash., native hit a solid .299 overall with 44 hits, 22 runs scored, three doubles, three triples, seven RBIs and eight stolen bases. She recorded 11 multi-hit games during the 2009 cam-paign, posted a pair of five-game hitting streaks and then a career-long, eight-game skein that stretched from April 10-22. Posted a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate with a double and triple in a loss at Ole Miss and hit .625 (5-for-8) during the series with Auburn. In a DH versus AU on April 11th, she tripled and scored the winning run in a 2-1 (11-inn.) win and then plated the deciding tally on a Kajitani walk-off triple in a 3-2 win.

28 SHELBY BURCHELLC/OF, 5-7, Sophomore, Columbia, Tenn. Opened her career in the Orange & White by hitting .256 over 56 games played (52 starts) with 18 runs scored, three doubles, five home runs and 25 RBIs. The Columbia, Tenn., product received the majority of her playing time (38 games) in the designated player spot in the line-up, but also played 20 con-tests in the outfield and got into three match-ups behind the plate. Burchell ignited the Lady Vol offense to a 6-1 victory over #23 Massachusetts at the Cathedral City Classic by going 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and a career-best three RBIs. She also delivered a clutch two-run single in the 10th inning to help seal a marathon, 4-0 (10 inn.) win over BYU. In a three-game series versus Mississippi State, Burchell hit a staggering .857 (6-for-7).

14 ERINN WEBB1B, 5-6, Senior, Hemet, Calif. Hit .274 (46-of-168) over 58 starts at either second, in the outfield or in the designated player’s spot in the batting order. She tied for the SEC lead with five triples, tied for eighth in the league with 13 doubles and added six homers and 35 RBIs. Against non-conference opposition, she hit .326 with nine dou-bles, three triples, three homers and 21 RBIs. Webb recorded 11 multi-hit and 11 multi-RBI match-ups in 2009, while registering a career-long seven-game hit-ting streak stretching from Feb. 21-March 6. Among her top performances were a 2-for-3, three-RBI effort versus Villanova, a perfect 3-for-3 day with a double and three runs scored during a rout of Bowling Green and a clutch three-run triple that proved the winning margin in a 4-1 triumph at #6 Oklahoma.
