Entering his50th year asFo u n d e r, Owner,C h a i rman ofthe Board,

President and CEO of the Titans/Oilersfranchise, K.S. "Bud" Adams, Jr. is anenduring figure in the NFL. As one of theoriginal team owners in the A m e r i c a nFootball League, he has guided his fran-chise to new heights since relocating toNashville in 1997, posting six playo ffappearances, including an A F CChampionship (1999), AFC Central title(2000), two AFC South titles (2002 &2008), AFC Championship appearance(2002) and Wild Card teams in 2003 and2007. He is one of only four current NFLowners to reach the 350-win plateau –Adams, Ralph Wilson (Buffalo), DanR o o n ey (Pittsbu rgh) and Al Dav i s(Oakland/Los Angeles). Consistentlyfielding winning teams, the franchise hasearned 21 playoff appearances in 49 sea-sons, a total that ranks fifth among NFLteams since 1960.

A native of Bartlesville, Okla., Adams'interest in sports was first displayed whileat Culver Military A c a d e my where heearned letters in football, basketball andbaseball. Upon graduation from Culver in1940, Adams attended Menlo Colleg e(California), lettering in both rugby andfootball. Adams then transferred to theengineering school at the University ofKansas where he also lettered in footballfor the Jayhawks. During his days at KU,Adams met his future wife Nancy Nevilleand began his loyal affiliation with SigmaChi Fraternity.

In 1942, while still in school at KU,Adams joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. InJuly 1943, he was called to active duty inthe Navy's V-12 college program, whichallowed him to continue in school. In early1944, he received orders to report toMidshipman Officer Specialty School atNotre Dame where he earned his Navyensign commission in an accelerated 60-day program. He was sent overseas andwas assigned to a PAC-Fleet carrier unit, where he served as an aviation engineeringo ffi c e r. He returned to the U.S. in

December 1945. Lt. j.g. Adams served asan aide in the U.S. Navy's CongressionalLiaison Office in Washington, D.C. priorto his discharge in 1946.

Adams parlayed a 1946 chance stop inHouston, resulting from fog that grounded

his plane, into a highly successful anddiversified business empire which rankshim among the prominent businessmen inthe country.

In 1946, Adams started A DA OilCompany, which was a forerunner of thepublicly-held American Stock Exchange-listed Adams Resources & Energy, Inc.(AE), an energy company engaged in thebusiness of marketing crude oil, naturalgas and petroleum products; tank trucktransportation of liquid chemicals; and oiland gas exploration and production.Adams' other business interests includeex t e n s ive fa rming and ranching inCalifornia and Texas, cattle feeding, realestate, automobile dealerships and leasing. He has been a longtime collector ofWestern art and Native American artifacts.

During his early business career, Adams,a year-round sports fan, was an avid spon-sor of amateur and AAU teams in basket-ball and softball. His ADA Oilers were aperennial power in the National IndustrialBasketball League in the '50s, capturing

third place in the national AAU tournamentin 1956. His interest in sports was furtherevidenced by past ownership participationin professional baseball, basketball andboxing.

Football history was made in Adams'office in Houston on Aug. 3, 1959, wherehe and Lamar Hunt held a press conferenceto announce the formation of the newAmerican Football League, which wouldbegin playing in 1960. Hunt would have ateam in Dallas, Adams would have a teamin Houston, and other teams would beforthcoming.

In his fifth decade as founder, owner,c h a i rman, president and CEO of theTennessee Titans (formerly Houston Oilersand Tennessee Oilers), the hardworkingand aggressive Adams has made profes-sional football history numerous times. In1968, Adams' Oilers became the fi r s tAFL/NFL team to play its home gamesindoors by moving into Houston'sAstrodome. A team rich in tradition andpride, the Oilers were the dominant team inthe American Football League during the1 0 - year era (1960-69), playing in thechampionship game four times (1960,1961, 1962, 1967) - and winning twiceconsecutively (1960, 1961); earning fourAFL Eastern Division Championships(1960, 1961, 1962, 1967); and making theplayoffs five years out of 10 (1960, 1961,1962, 1967, 1969). In 1970, the A F Lm e rged into the expanded NFL, andAdams' teams made the playoffs 16 times(1978, 1979, 1980, 1987, 1988, 1989,1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2002,2003, 2007, 2008). In fact, the Oilers'streak of seven consecutive playoff appear-ances (1987-93) was the longest streak inthe NFL during that time span. In 2008, thefranchise recorded the best record in theNFL (13-3), while capturing its fifth divi-sion title and second AFC South crown(2002) after winning the AFC Central divi-sion in 1991, 1993 and 2000.

The Houston Oilers played their finalseason in 1996 at the Houston Astrodome. In 1997, Adams led the National FootballLeague into the Mid-South region, the lastuntapped area without a major profession-al sport. That feat allowed his team to bethe first NFL franchise to call "theVolunteer State" home. During construc-tion of the stadium in Nashville, theTennessee Oilers played the 1997 season atthe Liberty Bowl in Memphis, and the

1998 season at Vanderbilt Stadium inNashville.

On July 29, 1998, Adams announced thatthe Oilers' name would be changed begin-ning with the 1999 season. The Oilers'name was retired by the NFL – a first inleague history – allowing the Tennesseefranchise to retain the team's winning tra-dition, and launching a new era in the Mid-South.

The Tennessee Titans made their debutin 1999. In Greek mythology, Titans weremen of strength and powe r. The Ti t a nPrometheus brought fire to man, and thenew Tennessee Titans brought fire to thefootball fans in the Mid-South during avery memorable inaugural season, unveil-ing a new name, stadium, training facility, logo, uniform and colors. Since the Titans moved toTennessee, local charities have seenapproximately $18 million flow into theirorganizations as a direct result of the Titansand the NFL. The great majority of them o n ey and gifts have come from Mr.Adams and the Titans Foundation.

In recognition of his many charitableendeavors, the Nashville Sports Councilpresented the "2000 Community SpiritAward" to Adams at their annual Dinner ofChampions on Feb. 1, 2000. Adams initiated the “Titans Join the TeamScholarship Program” that ran from 2005-07. The program rewarded high school ath-letes throughout the state of Tennesseewith scholarships for community service. The program generated over $500,000 inscholarship money and 30,000 serv i c ehours by students in communities through-out Tennessee.

The Titans also worked with AmSouthand Channel 5 in co-sponsoring"America’s Fund" which raised $664,000,including a $75,000 personal gift from Mr.and Mrs. Adams and $25,000 from theTitans organization, for victims of theSept. 11 tragedies.Adams' gifts have not been limited to cash

3,549 pints of blood, one of the most suc-cessful drives in the history of Nashville.

Adams donated a pair of Super Bowltickets to be raffled off to help pay medicalexpenses for Kaia Jergenson, a member ofthe David Lipscomb University women'sbasketball team, who lost her legs due tobacterial meningitis.

The team's historic 1999 Super Bowlseason saw Adams get heavily involved inarea schools with three unique programs. He established a statewide art contest thatspotlighted the importance of art in educa-tion and also added some Tennessee artis-tic flair to LP Field.

The art contest was open to high schoolstudents (grades 9-12) and resulted in 150entries that hung in the suites at the stadi-um. One winner from each grade won$1,000 with runners-up in each grade win-ning $750 each. Adams rewarded areasixth, seventh and eighth grade students fortheir hard work by donating 3,500 pairs oftickets to the inaugural game versus theFalcons.

Adams and his late wife Nancy havegiven generously to many charitable organ-izations over the years. After Tr o p i c a lStorm Allison devastated the Houston areain June 2001 with more than 30 inches ofrain, Adams contributed $100,000 to the"Spirit of Texas Fund" established by theRed Cross to aid flood victims. HoustonTexans owner Bob McNair and NFLCharities also contributed $100,000 eachfor a combined gift of $300,000 to thefund.

In 1998, Mr. and Mrs. Adams teamedwith NFL Charities to donate $200,000 tohelp families in East Nashville following adevastating tornado.

He purchased more than 500 copies of" Tennessee: A History" and presentedthem to seventh grade history classes atp u blic schools across the state. Wi l m aDykeman was the author of the book andwas a member of the Titans AdvisoryBoard of Directors that aided Adams inselecting the new name and logo for thefranchise.

Adams spearheaded the drive for con-s t ruction and operation of the originalRonald McDonald House in Houston. Theteam also hosted a biannual fundraisinggala from 1978-94, which raised more than$3.5 million to support, operate and pro-vide the permanent endowment of thatRonald McDonald House.

A year after celebrating the 10th season as theTennessee Titans, the team will mark another specialoccasion in 2009 — the 50th anniversary of the found-ing of the team and the formation of the AmericanFootball League.

In 1959, after failing toacquire NFL franchisesthrough expansion or pur-chase, Lamar Hunt and K.S.“Bud” Adams, Jr. resolved toform a new, competing pro-

fessional football league. Hunt and Adams recruitedother owners, who like themselves were looking toenter the world of football ownership but had beenrebuffed. The eight original teams, whose ownerswould later be dubbed the “Foolish Club” for taking on

the NFL, were: the Houston Oilers (later to be known as theTennessee Titans), Dallas Texans (Kansas City Chiefs), DenverBroncos, New York Titans (New York Jets), Los AngelesChargers (San Diego Chargers), Buffalo Bills, Boston Patriots( N ew England Patriots) and Oakland Raiders. Oaklandreceived a franchise after Minnesota, initially in the AFLgroup, was awarded an NFL expansion team.

The AFL played its first games in 1960, and Adams’ Oilers went on to win thefirst two AFL Championships. The Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins wereadded to the league later in the decade, and in 1970, the AFL and NFL were offi-cially merged, becoming the American Football Conference and the NationalFootball Conference.

The NFL will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the AFL in 2009 with a logoand uniform patch. Additionally, the original AFL clubs will wear special throw-back uniforms for select games. The Titans play five games against former AFLopponents (Bills, Chargers, Dolphins, Patriots and Jets).

Titans owner K.S. “ B u d ”Adams, Jr. was the co-founder of the A m e r i c a nFootball League in 1959.

Adams lured LSU running back Billy Cannon, who played a key role in the Oilerscapturing the fi rst two American Football League Championships.

J e ff Fisher isentering his 15thfull season asHead Coach ofthe Te n n e s s e e

Titans and his 10th as Executive VicePresident. Fisher holds the franchise recordfor wins by a head coach with 133 victoriesand is the NFL leader in tenure with oneteam among active coaches. Entering thisseason, he ranks 22nd on the NFL’s careerhead coaching wins list and second amongactive coaches (Belichick, 153).

Over the last 10 seasons (1999-2008),Fisher has guided thefranchise to six playo ffappearances – only twoteams (Indianapolis andPhiladelphia) have moreappearances during thattime. During his tenure, his accomplishmentsinclude the six playo ffappearances (1999, 2000,2002, 2003, 2007, 2008),three Division titles(2000, 2002, 2008), twoAFC ChampionshipGames (1999, 2002) andone Super Bowl bert h(XXXIV). He presidedover the most victorious(56 regular season winsand five postseason wins)and successful five - ye a rperiod in the franchise’s49-year history, between 1999 and 2003.

Last season was one of the most success-ful regular seasons in franchise history –capturing the AFC South title, matching afranchise best and league high 13 wins, smashing the franchise record for wins tostart a season with 10 and eight playersearning Pro Bowl invitations. The teamwas driven by a dynamic run game, an effi-cient passing game and one of the league’sbest defenses.

In 2007, Fisher helped a young team takeanother step in the maturation process andthe final rebuilding phase as this newgroup of Titans qualified for the playoffsfor the first time since 2003. In guiding the

team to a 10-6 record through the toughestdivision in the NFL, Fisher saw the fran-chise through a difficult re-tooling periodthat saw the team build from 4-12 in 2005,to 8-8 in 2006 and a playoff berth in 2007.The team followed the path of previouslysuccessful Jeff Fisher teams, ranking fifthin the NFL in rushing offense, fifth in theNFL in yards allowed on defense andrecording a 5-3 mark on the road.

Hallmarks of a Fisher-led team include astout rushing defense, the ability to possessthe ball with a strong running game andpoise in the midst of adversity. His ability

to lead and shape a teamis achieved through acombination of toughnessand insight as a formerNFL player. In 11 of thelast 14 seasons, the Titansdefense ranked in the top10 against the run andranks fourth in ru s h i n gdefense over that period(Baltimore, Pittsbu rg h ,San Diego). In 2003, theTitans finished first in theNFL in rushing defensefor only the second timein franchise history(1993).

Fisher believes in thephilosophy that a strongrunning game helps con-trol the clock and keepsyour defense fresh. In 11

of the last 13 seasons, the Titans have fin-ished in the top half of the NFL in rushingoffense including seven Top 10 finishes.Additionally, in 12 of the last 14 seasons, the Titans have finished with an averagetime of possession number more than 31minutes for the season.

After rising to head coaching duties dur-ing the 1994 season, Fisher took over ateam that was gutted by the emergence ofthe salary cap and eventually molded theminto a consistent winner, overcoming anynumber of obstacles that were involvedwith moving the team from Houston toNashville. The circumstances that sur-rounded the team between 1995 and 1998

helped bond the team and form an identityof strength and the ability to overcome.Fisher’s teams are mentally strong, flour-ishing on the road where many teams willwilt. Since 1995, the Titans/Oilers haveamassed the third best road record in theNFL with a 61-51 mark during that time, including a 6-2 mark during the 2008 cam-paign.

In 1997 (8-8) and 1998 (8-8), Fisherguided a team that was in a state of transi-tion and laid the groundwork for the suc-cess that was to come. As the team arrivedin Tennessee, two young stars began to takecontrol as third-year quarterback SteveMcNair took over a starting role and sec-o n d - year running back Eddie Georg ebecame a workhorse.

After ye a r sof fluidity andchange, a freshs t a rt and sta-bility f i n a l lya rr ived in1999 with anew name andthe opening ofthe new stadi-um; and in thisn ew env i r o n-ment, the newTitans wo u l dflourish withthe foundationthat had beenlaid. Fi s h e r,the Titans andMiddle Tennesseans will fondly rememberthe accomplishments of the 1999 season, which brought the team its first A F CChampionship and an appearance in SuperBowl XXXIV. Fisher and the Titans defeat-ed AFC Central champion Jacksonv i l l ethree times in 1999, handing the Jaguarstheir only losses. As a Wild Card team, theTitans had the most difficult route to theSuper Bowl. Fisher earned his first post-season victory by defeating Buffalo 22-16,and erased a 16-0 deficit against the Ramsin one of the biggest displays of heart inany second half of Super Bowl history. TheTitans became only the sixth Wild Cardteam to earn a trip to the Super Bowl sincethe NFL added the Wild Card playoff teamin 1978. Fisher guided the Titans to astreak of 13 consecutive wins against AFCCentral Division opponents dating back to

1998. It marked the longest streak in thehistory of the Central Division and thethird longest in the NFL since the 1970merger.

Building on the success the Titans hadduring the 1999 season would be tough toaccomplish, but Fisher followed the team’sfirst AFC championship in 1999 with anAFC Central crown and the league’s bestrecord in 2000. It was the first time in fran-chise history that the Titans/Oilers ownedthe NFL’s best record (13-3) and only thethird time the club won the AFC Central.

In 2000, Fisher became the fifth coach inNFL history to lead his team to consecu-tive 13-win seasons, joining Mike Ditka(Chicago Bears, 1985-86), George Seifert(San Francisco, 1989-90), Marv Lev y

( B u f f a l oBills, 1990-91) and MikeH o l m g r e n(Green BayP a c k e r s ,1 9 9 6 - 9 7 ) .The defensereached anew level ofsuccess in2000, earn-ing the num-ber one rank-ing in theNFL fory a r d sa l l owed ands u rr e n d e r i n g

In 2003, Tennessee reached theDivisional round of the playoffs for thefourth time in five years after earning aWild Card berth with their 12-4 mark.Tennessee continued a tradition of greatplay at home, posting a 7-1 record at LPField. While the defense ranked fi r s tagainst the run, the offense scored the sec-ond most points in franchise history (435)and became just the third franchise since1970 to score 30 or more points in six con-secutive games. On thei n d ividual side, quart e r-back Steve McNaire a rned NFL co-MVPhonors, becoming onlythe second player in fran-chise history to win thehonor (Earl Campbell).

During the 2004 sea-son, the Titans struggledto overcome an array ofinjuries that by the end ofthe season accounted for135 games missed bys t a rters, including sea-son-ending injuries to 10starters, and resulted in a5-11 record.

Also in 2004, Fi s h e rbecame the fourt hyoungest coach (46) towin 90 regular seasongames since 1960. OnlyJohn Madden (41), DonShula (41), and BillCowher (44) were fasterto 90 wins.

The 2005 season alsowas a year of youth, asthe Titans fielded theyoungest team in theleague and yo u n g e s tNFL team in over a decade. Escaping fromsalary cap difficulties in a single season, the team was forced to jettison productiveplayers who provided veteran leadership. This combination of youth and inexperi-ence was the primary reason for the team’s4-12 record.

In 2006, Fisher showed his experiencedleadership skills in guiding a team thatstarted 0-5 and was led by a rookie quarter-back to an 8-8 record by winning eight ofthe last 11 contests, including a six-gamewin streak through November andDecember to finish one game short of theplayoffs. Quarterback Vince Young earnedRookie of the Year honors and the offenseposted the sixth highest rushing total infranchise history - the second highest inthe Fisher coaching era (1997). Despitehaving the NFL’s second youngest team onopening day, it was a team that learned to
