ET FIRST SERVE THE LSU MATCH ¢ Wednesday night’s match on ESPNU marks the 53rd meeting between the Lady Vols and Tigers. ¢ The teams have faced off at least once every year since 1981. The Tigers currently lead the series by a 33- 19 margin, but the Big Orange has taken the past two meetings. LSU is UT’s fifth most-played opponent. ¢ Over the first 20 years of the series, LSU had a winning streak of 14 matches and held the Lady Vols to just nine wins in 30 meetings. However, since head coach Rob Patrick has arrived at Rocky Top, Tennes- see has beaten the Tigers 10 times. Coach Patrick holds a career record of 10-11 against the Tigers. ¢ After topping the Tigers in four sets in Baton Rouge last season, the Lady Vols shutout LSU at home on Nov. 20, 2011 to clinch at least a share of the Southeastern Conference title. Tennessee posted a blistering .415 attacking clip in the win and went on to win its first outright SEC championship. ¢ This match marks the 23rd meeting in Baton Rouge, with LSU holding a commanding 17-5 advan- tage at home. ¢ There have been 10 five set matches played be- tween the two sides, but none since Sept. 18, 2009. 27 of the 52 meetings have been decided in straight sets, while 14 matchups have needed four frames to decide a winner. In the first meeting in 1982, LSU won by forfeit. ¢ It’s the second straight season and fifth time since 2001 that the Lady Vols and Tigers will play on televi- sion. LSU currently holds a 4-1 margin over the Orange & White in those matches. UT won the last TV match with a 3-0 decision in Knoxville last season. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT ¢ Tennessee posted back to back five set wins over Missouri and Georgia last week to improve its record to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in SEC action. ¢ The Lady Vols held the Tigers to a .140 attacking clip and scooped a season-high 98 digs to earn the win. Ju- nior libero Ellen Mullins accounted for a career-best 34 digs in the match, a single-match mark that ranks sev- enth in school history and second in the rally scoring era. ¢ Sophomore Tiffany Baker also garnered career numbers with 23 kills and 16 digs en route to her first double-double of the season. She swing 53 times and committed just three errors for a .377 attacking clip. ¢ After falling behind 2-0 on Sunday vs. Georgia, redshirt senior Kayla Jeter paced the Big Orange comeback with a career-best 27 kills - the second highest mark of the year for UT. Jeter hit .444 with just three errors on 54 swings and added 12 digs. ¢ Baker added her second straight double-dou- ble with 16 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore Mary Pollmiller had 54 assists and 11 digs, marking the first match this season UT had three double-doubles. De- fensively, redshirt senior DeeDee Harrison rejected a career-high nine swings. MULLINS: SEC DEF. UT IN THE RANKINGS¢ For the third consecutive season, Tennessee

opened its campaign in the national rankings, as it came in at No. 15 in the AVCA Preseason Poll. The pre-season ranking was the ninth in program history for UT, who concluded 2011 rated as No. 19.¢ On Aug. 27, the Lady Vols moved up one position

to No. 14 in the nation following wins over Cincinnati and then-No. 10 Iowa State. UT fell down two notches to No. 16 after posting a 2-1 mark at the Shocker Volleyball Classic.¢ The Big Orange went 3-0 at Maryland’s Spring-

Hill Suites Invitational with three sweeps, but dropped one spot to No. 17 in the AVCA Poll on Sept. 10.¢ After opening their SEC slate 2-3, the Lady Vols

dropped out of the top 25 on Oct. 1 for the first time in 17 polling periods and since September 2011.¢ Wins over Mizzou and Georgia would see the

Lady Vols back in the top 25, but they are receiving votes for the second straight week (Oct. 8).¢ The 16-week stretch was the fourth longest in

school history. UT had two stretches of 19-straight weeks (2009-11; 1982-84) and one stretch of 17 con-secutive weeks (2005-05) in the poll.¢ After entering the rankings at No. 24 on Nov. 30,

2009, the Lady Vols spent 19 consecutive polling pe-riods in the Top 25, until falling out for a four-week span last season.

» Junior outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is eight kills away from joining UT’s 1,000-kill club. Robinson will be the 18th Lady Vol to reach the mark.

LADY VOL NOTESBACK IN TOP FORM¢ A little over a year removed from a knee injury

that cost her what was supposed to be her senior sea-son at UT, Jeter had the breakout performance that she had been waiting for on Sunday. The All-American posted a career-best 27 kills, breaking her previous mark of 23 set as a sophomore at Kentucky, and hit .444 against Georgia with 12 digs to notch her first double-double of the season.¢ The 27 kills from the Solon, Ohio native ranks as

the second-highest single-match total in the SEC this

year, behind only her teammate Kelsey Robinson, who notched 29 vs. Iowa State (Aug. 25).

FABULOUS IN FIVE¢ UT has played six five-setters through 16 matches

this season and holds a 5-1 record in those meetings.¢ The six five-set matches this year are more than

the Lady Vols have played all season in six of the last 10 campaigns. ¢ This weekend was only the 10th time in school his-

tory the team has won back to back five-setters. This year is just the second time the Big Orange has ever won two pairs of back to back five-setters in the same sea-son. The Lady Vols also beat Iowa State (Aug. 25) and Colorado State (Aug. 31) in five earlier this year.¢ The Lady Vols have won back to back to back

five-set matches just once in program history. UT de-feated South Carolina, Auburn and Kentucky in con-secutive five-setters in 2008.¢ Tennessee fought back from a two-set deficit

against UGA on Sunday. It was the 16th win after be-ing down 0-2 in school history. From 1997 to 2008, the team was only able to accomplish the feat once. Since 2009, UT has won one match that way every season.

TENNESSEE ON THE TUBE¢ The Lady Vols will make a league high five TV

appearances in the regular season in 2012. UT, which appeared on the network two weeks ago at Kentucky,

will make its third and final appearance on ESPNU. ¢ The Big Orange hosts Alabama (10/28) on Fox Sport-

South and plays at Florida on Comcast/Cox on Nov. 4.¢ Since 2001, Tennessee has played 10 matches on

ESPN networks and is 5-5 in those matches. Since 2009, UT is 12-5 in TV matches. The Big Orange is 0-2 on TV this season.¢ The Orange & White owns an overall record of 21-

20 in televised matches dating back to 2001.

TENNESSEE IN THE RPI¢ The initial NCAA Division I Volleyball RPI of the

2012 campaign was released last week with the Lady Vols coming in at No. 27 in the nation. After defeating Mizzou and Georgia, UT jumped six spots to No. 21 in the second week of the RPI rankings.¢ Six of UT’s 11 wins have come against top 75 RPI

teams: Colorado State (36), Wichita State (39), Iowa State (44), Missouri (48), South Carolina (67) and Georgia (72). ¢ In addition, all five of the Big Orange’s losses have

come against top 50 RPI squads: BYU (11), Kentucky (18), Arkansas (20), Florida State (16) and Missouri (48). ¢ The SEC has five teams in the top 24 and seven

squads in the top 50 of the RPI rankings: Florida (13), Kentucky (18), Arkansas (20), Tennessee (21), Texas A&M (24), Auburn (45) and Missouri (48).

POLLMILLER PASSES 2K¢ With her 36th assist vs. Arkansas (9/21), Pollmiller

became the seventh player in Tennessee history to

the week on Monday afternoon. It’s the second time of her career she has won the award.¢ The Nashville native has started every match at

libero for UT this season and averaged 4.80 digs per set over the weekend. She posted a career-best 34 digs against Missouri, a mark that stands as the sev-enth-highest total in school history and second most in the 25-point rally scoring era. It’s also the fourth highest single match total in the SEC this season.¢ She added a team-high 14 digs on Sunday and

has now posted 12 or more digs in all seven league matches this year. The junior’s 3.94 digs per set aver-age currently ranks eighth in the SEC.¢ Mullins is looking to become the 12th or 13th (de-

pending on Robinson) Lady Vol to join the 1,000-dig club for her career. She currently has 876 career digs.

876 career digs, 124 shy of joining the 1,000-dig club. If Robinson reaches the club first, Mullins would be the 13th member. Last season, she finished with 471 digs. In 2012, she has scooped 256 balls through 16 matches. ¢ Below are charts mapping the current Lady Vol

volleyball record watch:

TENNESSEE ON THE ROAD¢ After hosting its annual home tournament, the

Comcast Lady Vol Classic, from Aug. 24-25, the Lady Vols were road warriors. UT traveled to Wichita, Kan., and College Park, Md., for two regular season tourna-

cross the 2,000-assist mark for her career.¢ As a freshman, she set UT single season rally

scoring records in assists (1,480) and assists per set (11.94). She led all NCAA freshmen in assists per set, while ranking fourth in the nation and first in the SEC.¢ She was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year and an

AVCA Honorable Mention All-American. In addition, the rookie garnered AVCA All-South Region Fresh-man of the Year, SEC All-Freshman Team and AVCA All-South Region Team honors. ¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 2,000-assist club:

20/20 VISION¢ Against South Carolina (9/23), Robinson recorded

21 kills and 22 digs, marking her third 20/20 match of the season and the fifth of her career. While it’s not an of-ficial stat, it’s certainly a rare feat in the UT record books.¢ Since 2001, six different players have reached the

20 mark in two statistical categories in a single match on just 14 occasions. In terms of just 20+ kills and digs, only three players, including Robinson, have done it. She’s the only player to have achieved that more than once. ¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 14 20/20 matches since 2001:

RECORD WATCH¢ Robinson enters the week with 992 career kills

and 968 career digs and is eyeing some milestones. With eight kills, she will become the 18th member of the Lady Vols’ 1,000-kill club and with 32 digs she can become the 12th UT player to reach 1,000 career digs.¢ When she reaches both, she will join an even more

exclusive club, becoming one of just five Lady Vols in

ments and Columbia, Mo., Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Lex-ington, Ky., for SEC play.¢ The Lady Vols returned home for the first time in

27 days when they hosted Arkansas on Sept. 21.¢ Tennessee is 3-2 in true road matches this season,

with wins over Wichita State, Maryland and Alabama. UT also has three wins at a neutral location on the campaign.¢ In 2011, the Big Orange finished with a 14-3 re-

cord in matches away from Thompson-Boling Arena, including a 3-1 mark in a neutral location. ¢ Dating back through the 2008 campaign, the Lady

Vols are 41-17 in true road matches. UT is 68-40 in away matches dating back through the 2004 season.

TENNESSEE vs. THE TOP 25¢ Through 16 matches, the Lady Vols have faced

three opponents ranked in the top 25 and two that were receiving votes in the poll. ¢ UT is 2-1 against teams in the top 25 this season

with wins over then-No. 10 Iowa State and then-No. 24 Colorado State. The Big Orange’s loss was against then-No. 12 Florida State in the season opener. The Lady Vols also lost to a BYU squad that is now ranked 16th in the weekly poll.¢ The Lady Vols’ two wins over ranked teams are

the only wins over non-conference opponents ranked in the top 25 for SEC teams.¢ Tennessee went 4-2 in matches against ranked

opponents in 2011, with a pair of wins over Florida (No. 6 & No. 13), a victory over No. 16 Kentucky and a win against No. 21 Dayton.¢ En route to its NCAA Regional Final appearance,

the Big Orange defeated a rally-scoring record six ranked teams in 2004. UT shared the SEC title and captured the SEC Tournament title that season.

11 STRAIGHT DOUBLE-DOUBLES¢ Robinson, the defending SEC Player of the Year,

currently leads the SEC with 11 double-doubles on the season. Robinson did not achieve the feat in the sea-son opener against Florida State, but reached double digits in two categories in 11-straight matches. Her streak was snapped at Kentucky two weeks ago.¢ Against South Carolina (9/23), she posted 21 kills

and 22 digs en route to a four set win over the Game-cocks. She tallied 14 kills and 16 digs against Arkansas (9/21) and 20 kills and 14 scoops at Alabama (9/16). She’s posted 20 or more kills and 14 or more digs in seven of the Lady Vols’ 16 matches.¢ She now has 38 career double-doubles.

“DIG FOR THE CURE” NIGHT¢ In an effort to raise money and awareness for

breast cancer research, the Tennessee Lady Vol vol-leyball team held its fifth annual “Dig for the Cure” Night on Friday against Mizzou.¢ UT donned pink jerseys and accessories and auc-

tioned the uniforms off after the match, with all pro-ceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation of Knoxville.¢ The Lady Vols gave over $1,600 to the foundation.

UT is 5-0 in “Dig for the Cure” matches.¢ Last season, UT blanked Alabama in straight sets

in its annual “Dig for the Cure” match. Playing in front of the third largest crowd in program history, Tennes-see raised $2,650 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.¢ In addition, Coach Patrick is one Knoxville’s

CityView Magazine’s eight “Pink Tie Guys” this year. The eight men have had their lives profoundly touched by breast cancer and agree to don a pink tie and declare their support for the cause of breast cancer awareness.

POLLMILLER TRIPLE-DOUBLE¢ With her 49-assist, 14-dig and 11-kill performance

against Wichita State (9/2), Pollmiller became just the second player in program history to record the rare triple-double.¢ Pollmiller and Ole Miss’ Amanda Philpot have the

league’s only triple-doubles this season. Philpot tal-lied 11 kills, 14 digs and 36 assists vs. Rice (9/7) and added a 10-kill, 12-dig and 40-assist performance vs. rival Mississippi State (9/21) ¢ Pollmiller is currently tied for fifth in the confer-

ence with seven double-doubles.¢ Tennessee legend Nikki Fowler was the only other

UT player to achieve the triple-double for the Lady Vols. As a freshman, Fowler went for 19 kills, 19 assists and 18 digs at Ole Miss on Nov. 2, 2007. She finished her career (2007-10) with 1,649 kills, ranking fourth in the UT volleyball record books.

CIKRA NAMED PLAYER OF WEEK¢ Senior right side hitter Leslie Cikra earned her first

career weekly honor on Sept. 10, being tabbed the week’s SEC Offensive Player of the Week. The 6-foot-4 hitter was named the tournament MVP at Mary-land’s SpringHill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational.¢ Two days later, Cikra was one of three players

chosen nationally to the NCAA’s Players of the Week, marking UT’s first national weekly award since last season when Baker earned the College Volleyball Up-date honor on Nov. 1.¢ Playing in all nine sets, Cikra committed just two

errors on 56 attempts and tallied 42 kills for an amaz-ing .714 attacking percentage at the tournament. She averaged 5.11 points, 4.67 kills and 0.78 blocks.

RECORD BREAKING TOURNAMENT¢ After posting consecutive 2-1 weekends with no

sweeps to open the season at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Wichita State’s Shocker Classic, Tennessee put together a perfect 3-0 weekend with three shut-outs at the University of Maryland’s SpringHill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational.¢ The Orange & White opened the event with a

win over George Washington and returned to action against Boston College the next day. ¢ The Lady Vols played a historical match against

the Eagles, hitting .639 as a team to break a single-match record that stood for nearly 32 years. UT had 48 kills on 72 attacking attempts with only two errors - a rally scoring era best. Tennessee allowed just 38 points against, the second fewest in the rally scoring era.¢ The hitting percentage clip bested the previous

record of .607 that was set on Sept. 19, 1980 in a loss against Cal State Fullerton.

LAST SEASON VS. LSU¢ Tennessee went into a tough environment last

season and came away with a four-set win over the Tigers in Baton Rogue. The Lady Vols beat LSU, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-14.¢ It was the first win at LSU since Oct. 8, 2000. The

win improved UT to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in SEC play.¢ Robinson led the charge for the Big Orange, com-

piling 20 kills and 10 digs. Then-juniors Leslie Cikra

and DeeDee Harrison both tallied double digit kills. Cikra finished with 16, while Harrison added 10. The duo combined for 12 blocks as well.¢ Pollmiller dished out 50 helpers in the win¢ The then-No. 14 Lady Vols welcomes LSU to

Thompson-Boling Arena on Nov. 20, 2011 and swept the Tigers to clinch at least a share of the SEC title. ¢ The Orange & White rode a blistering .415 hitting

percentage to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-15 sweep. Robinson led the way again with 16 kills and 13 digs, while hit-ting .400 overall. ¢ Baker added 11 kills, while Cikra and Harrison con-

tributed eight kills each. The Big Orange had more kills, assists, aces, digs and blocks than LSU.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS¢ The LSU Tigers enter the midweek tilt with a 7-10

overall record and a 3-5 mark in SEC play after split-ting their matches for the third straight week. LSU has won an incredible seven consecutive SEC Western Di-vision titles entering the year.¢ The Tigers have league wins over Kentucky, Missis-

sippi State and most recently South Carolina, who they shutout on Sunday. LSU’s conference losses have come against Alabama, South Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas and Georgia.¢ Currently in fourth place in the West, LSU came

in at No. 73 in week two of the NCAA’s RPI Rankings. ¢ LSU comes into the match ranking in the middle

of the SEC in most statistical categories. However, the well-balanced Tigers rank fourth in the league in digs per set (15.76). LSU is last in opponent hitting percentage (.228) and second to last in team hitting percentage (.197). The Tigers also rank seventh in as-sists (12.47/Set) and eighth in blocks (2.18) and aces (1.08) per set.¢ Junior Desiree Elliott and senior Madie Jones pace

the Tiger attack this season, with Jones coming off a stellar week. The outside hitting averaged 5.12 kills per set and hit at a .313 clip last week. She notched a career-high 26 kills vs. Georgia, including 10 kills during the third set. On Sunday, Jones added 15 kills on 29 swings with no errors for a .517 attacking mark.¢ Elliott, the Tigers’ middle blocker, comes in aver-

aging a team-best 3.52 kills per set and a .278 hitting percentage. She leads the team with 218 kills and is second on the squad with 54 total blocks, including a team-best 16 solo. ¢ Jones and Elliott rank seventh and 10th on the

SEC’s active kill leaders list with 934 and 848, respec-tively. The duo also ranks ninth and 10th in the league in kills per set, respectively. ¢ Sophomore setter Malorie Pardo is the quarter-

back of the Tigers, dishing out 10.39 assists per set - a mark that ranks seventh in the SEC - and a total of 644 helpers on the season. She’s coming off a career-best 64 assist performance against Georgia last week.¢ LSU, which didn’t play a match at home until Sept.

21 due to Hurricane Isaac, is in the midst of a four-match homestand. ¢ LSU head coach Fran Flory is in her 15th year at

the helm of the Tigers after taking over prior to the 1998 campaign. Flory has won seven straight SEC Western Division crowns and has reached the NCAA Tournament in six of the last seven seasons. The 2009 SEC and AVCA South Region Coach of the Year has an overall record at LSU of 274-166.
