LIFE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM CLASSES The Life Enrichment Program (LEP) offers intellectually stimulating non-credit courses for adults (age 18 and over) who share a love of learning and/or teaching. A variety of LEP classes are offered during the Fall Terms. To ensure your place in a class, register early.

LIFE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION • Non-credit courses for adults in the greater Columbus area

• Once-a-week sessions for 1 – 1 1/2 hours or at instructor’s discretion,

for six-weeks in the fall and spring and four weeks in the summer

• Wide range of topics

• Community volunteer instructors who are experts in their fields

• $35.00 registration fee allows enrollment in up to 3 courses + $10 for each additional course

Medicare, Now What? (1 p.m.) Instructor: Sharon Duke, Certified Medicare Specialist, State Health Insurance Program Learn to navigate the Medicare System and to avoid costly mistakes concerning Medicare. This course includes tips and information on such topics as Medicare benefits, supplement policies, advantage plans, and prescription drug plans. Learn to compare prescription drug coverage and understand how to find the policy. This class is a “must have” for anyone who will be applying for Medicare or who has a loved one applying for Medicare in the near future.

Water Exercise (1 p.m.) Instructor: Mary Chism, Water Aerobics Enthusiast Come and play like a child again. Exercise in water does not feel like work; it is ideal for bad knees and hips as the water supports body weight. Come try it – no swimming ability needed because all work is done in shallow water. Beginning Crochet (1 p.m.)

Here’s your chance. Participants should bring a picture of their favorite pet and Sharon will help you paint a 5x7 canvas panel with acrylic paints. Healthy Eats with CAI (11 a.m.)

Instructor: Chef Mary Helen Hawkins, Chef Instructor and Certificate Program Coordinator, The W Healthy eating is sometimes frowned upon in the south, but wait until you taste what Chef Mary Helen Hawkins and her Culinary Arts Institute students are going to prepare and demonstrate for you. You’ll get to taste some amazing food and also tour the CAI demonstration kitchen. Seating is limited to 12 participants on a first come basis.

LEP Day Trip | Term 1 | September 14The Pink Palace Museum is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the Southeast. You can walk through a replica of the first self-service grocery store in the country, Clarence Saunders’ Piggly Wiggly. Explore the cultural and natural history of the Mid-South through exciting exhibits, dioramas, and audio-visuals. Trace Memphis’ development from the time of Spanish explorers through the Civil War and the yellow fever epidemics. Learn from the award-winning

medical exhibit how health care grew to be Memphis’ largest industry.You will also see how dinosaurs and fossils dramatically chronicle our ever-changing planet. The Museum also hosts a number of touring exhibits for you to see and experience throughout the year. Lunch (on your own) to follow at a local restaurant. The cost is $45.

LEP Day Trip | Term 2 | November 9A century after the Civil War, Selma made history again as the site of some of the

most infamous events in the Civil Rights Movement including “Bloody Sunday” and the successful Selma-to-Montgomery March, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This Civil Rights tour is designed to enlighten the participant’s overall experience of Selma, one of the historical Civil Rights hotbeds of the Deep South. Lunch (on your own) to follow at a local restaurant. The cost is $55.

MONDAYSWhole 30 Journey (6 p.m.) Instructor: Cassie McCool, Health and Wellness Enthusiast

Whole 30 is a dietary reset program that can be used to identify potential food allergies by eliminating problematic foods for 30 days and then systematically reintroducing them to observe reactions. In this class, participants will receive an overview of the program and a preparation plan from the book, “The Whole 30” written by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig to begin the process for optimal success. Painting on Glass (11 a.m.)

Instructor: Elisa Barnes-Shizak, Floral Glass Art designer Participants will learn the art of painting on glass and how to fire the glass object to make the design permanent. Participants will also be using other materials to paint to create artwork. If you’ve taken a previous class, you may bring your brushes but new brushes will also be provided. Please bring a 3 ring binder and a tote bag to keep materials organized. Wear something that you are not worried about getting painted. An additional fee of $25 will be charged for this course. Investing can be made complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. This class will provide participants with a working glossary to understand the world of investing. It will provide a basic structure to assist in deductive decisions, and a fundamental framework to discuss the global marketplace. Five Wishes (1 p.m.)

The Five Wishes is a program to help people decide what kind or care they want at the end of their life. Participants will work together through a workbook that can become a legal document regarding their own wishes. We will discuss the varying aspects of care for the dying. An additional fee of $1.25 will be charged for the workbook.

Wine Tasting and Restaurant Tour (6:30 p.m.) Instructor: Daniel and Leah Harrell, Wine Stewards If you already enjoy learning about wine and want to dive in deeper into the fine, nuanced details, join us for this extraordinary exploration of wine. In this class, participants will progress beyond the basics as we cover tasting practicalities, tasting exercises, blind tasting, storage practices and more. Holiday Acrylics (10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.)
