Childminder Early Years
WelcomeWelcome to County Durham’s Professional Development Programme for childminders. This term we have created an exciting training programme that includes both face to face training and e-learning from our partner agencies. These training courses are specially tailored to meet your professional development needs. Regular attendance at courses will support you in maintaining and developing a quality childminding service and will help to ensure you are meeting current Ofsted requirements.
Following the success of last year’s termly programme we have decided to keep the same format this year; continuing to better meet your needs throughout the year.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing commitment to professional development and self-improvement and look forward to working with you over the next year. We are always happy to receive feedback on the kind of courses that will work best for you.

Cancellation policyIf you are unable to attend a course for which you have allocated a place, you must contact us as soon as possible. Any cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged at £50 per person. Cancellations of training under 24 hours’ notice due to sensitive personal reasons or an Ofsted visit will be considered on a case by case basis. Cancellations can be made over the phone but must be confirmed in writing by email to [email protected] or by post, address can be found within the directory.

Physical development - putting the pieces together Code: CMD 316
Course Outline
This session explores and unpicks the child’s development of physical skills, how the brain is key to the development of fine and gross motor skills, movement and balance systems and how everyday opportunities support the foundations children need for future skills and school readiness.

Celebrating wide open spaces outdoors Code: CMD 310
Course Outline
The value of wide open spaces in enabling children’s learning and development is often overlooked. This course will provide the time and opportunity to reflect and consider how nature and a wide open space can be used effectively and resourcefully to support learning and development for all.

Everywhere and everyday - learning in a childminder’s environment Code: CMD 315
Course Outline
This session will focus on how all areas of learning takes place within the daily routines of a childminder’s day. To understand how the various environments children have access to can support their learning and development.

Creating and thinking critically - learning through exploration and discovery Code: CMD 318
Course Outline
Would you like to encourage children to enjoy open ended play, think of ideas, solve problems and find new ways of doing things? Join us for new and exciting inspiration in using your collections of kitchen roll holders, egg cartons, plastic trays and other household materials.

Course Outline
A practical, hands-on workshop exploring how the everyday opportunities of snack/meal prep, cooking/baking based activities support learning and challenge across the EYFS and home learning. **This is not about cooking and its end result but the richness of the process for children **

Level 2 Safeguarding Systems and Processes Code: CMD 306
Course Outline
This course is designed to develop a shared understanding of the processes, principles, roles and responsibilities outlined in national and local guidance for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Safeguarding children in County Durham - Refresher Training Code: CMD 300
Course Outline
To update Childminders on the safeguarding processes currently in use and the current picture relating to safeguarding children in County Durham. This is a refresher course ONLY. Childminders attending this course must have completed a level 2 Safeguarding Systems and Processes course within the last three years.

Safeguarding children in the digital world Code: CMD 309
Course Outline
This ½ day course will identify the principal dangers, and equip you with the understanding, skills and confidence to enable children to stay safe online. It will also offer ideas to share with parents to keep their child safer on-line.

Neglect Code: CMD 304
Course Outline
This course will support you to understand neglect and the impact it has upon young children. During the session we will look at understanding the impact of neglect on attachment, child development and resilience and share how we as professionals need to work together.

A parent wants to take up the 30 hours free childcare scheme
Direct the parent to www.childcarechoices.gov.uk where they can apply for an eligibility code to access the free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds.
Once the parent has their code they should complete the parent declaration form and return to you for your records.
Using the information collected on the parent declaration form, verify the code on the provider portal.
Once you have verified the code, you can offer the funded place to the parent and claim the funding for all eligible children through the provider portal.
Keep the parental declaration form safe! It gives you permission to send us your parental information.
Details on how to verify eligibility codes on the provider portal can be found on the For providers section of the FIS website funding arrangements for eligible 2, 3 and 4 year olds.
If we need to contact you, we will use the contact details you have recorded with Ofsted. Please ensure that this is valid and up to date.
Always refer to the Department for Education’s 30 hours free childcare: LA and early years provider guide for information on how to deliver the funded childcare.

To be eligible to provide funded childcare, you must hold an Ofsted Inspection outcome of ‘requires improvement’ or above, or ‘met’. For newly registered providers call 03000 265 706.

30 hours funded childcare for 3 and 4 year olds –funding process guide for childcare providers

Complete the funded places provider form and return it to [email protected]
On receipt of the funded places provider form your eligibility to deliver funded childcare will be verified.
If eligible, your details will be given to the early years funding team. They will send you a provider portal user ID request form, a BACS form (so that funding can be paid into your nominated bank account) and a funding agreement for your completion and return. These forms can be found on the For providers section of the FIS website funding arrangements for eligible 2, 3 and 4 year olds
What is the provider portal?It is part of an online system called Synergy, used by us to electronically manage the early years funding framework.

Complete the provider portal user ID request form and BACS form (if necessary) and return to [email protected]
On receipt of the provider portal user ID request form, you will be sent a user ID and instructions on how to access the provider portal.
Once set up, you can submit your funding estimate, headcount return and anyadjustments on the provider portal.
What does headcount mean? This is the term used to describe the number of children receiving funded childcare in your setting and the number of funded childcare hours delivered in any one term.
Important provider portal dates. It is important to submit your headcount regularly. Visit the For providers section on the FIS website funding arrangements for eligible 2, 3 and 4 year olds for deadline dates.
30 hours funded childcare from September 2017
The 30 hours free childcare for working parents will start from September 2017. It is important that you update your information on the Families Information Service (FIS) website to let us, and parents, know if you are planning on offering 30 hours free childcare. Please note: if you state that you will offer a funded place (including 30 hours free childcare) your details will automatically display on the FIS website.

New e-learning opportunities available via the LSCB websiteDurham Local Safeguarding Children Board have a range of e-learning courses available for you to access at a time to suit you.

Childminder quality improvement support meetingsA network meeting for childminders to access information and support and to offer support to other childminders in their area. Information updates include Ofsted guidance, funded childcare and policy and practice.
Childminders are encouraged to attend the meeting in their area but can attend any of the other meetings if they wish.
