Dear Children, Parents and Caregivers, Yesterday we had a huge turnout for Open Day with many families from the local area spending considerable time touring the school, asking lots of questions in the process. We were very proud to show the visitors around. I explained to the visitors that on Open Day, it’s ‘business as usual’. We like them to see what everyday learning looks like, rather than carefully planned ‘magic shows’. Parents were glad to hear that what they saw on Open Day is what normally happens at school. And guess what? They were impressed.

One of our Foundation students noticed the huge crowd gathered on the Red Road (in Robinson Street) and looking puzzled, asked his teacher if we were conducting an Auction!? I can confirm that I did not sell the school yesterday.

A Picture Paints a Thousand Words On Tuesday evening Mr. Peter O’Farrell completed his term as Chairperson of our School Advisory Board (now called the Parish Education Board). It did not take me long to find some evidence of Peter’s time at the helm of this important group. In fact, I stopped looking when it became clear that I could fill most of the Newsletter with photos of Peter at meetings, functions, Masses, working bees, social events and morning teas. I acknowledge with gratitude that on many of these occasions, by being a key part of a community event, Peter gave up valuable family time in order to be involved. At other times, Peter had the whole family here, demonstrating how important it is for families to become active participants in Parish life. Thank you to Sally and the O’Farrell boys for sharing Peter with us on so many occasions. Peter is a leader who demonstrates his passion for our Parish community by being involved. He rolls up his sleeves and gets the job done. He invites new people to be a part of the group and encourages everyone with his welcoming smile and encouraging nature. Peter integrates his faith and life in a way that lives out the values of the Gospels. His leadership has had a huge impact on our school. I thank him sincerely for his support of me as Principal and for his tireless work for our community.

With My Sincere Thanks On Tuesday three Board Members in addition to Peter O’Farrell, finished up their terms after several years of dedication to the community. Among their many skills, I would like to highlight the following: Michael Padden is one of the best listeners I have encountered. He has the

ability to absorb the contents of a lengthy discussion and reduce our deliberations to a single point, with clarity that allows us to move forward with an issue. Michael also has the ability to ask exactly the right question that reflects his deep-thinking ability.

Rob Sicilia has the ability to bring energy to any activity that galvanises the crowd and brings everyone on board. Rob’s enthusiasm should be bottled and sold. He has been both a Board Member and a representative of the Parents’ Association. His communication style brings energy to both groups and everyone has been well-informed.

Phil Mason has the ability to see the big picture and the fine detail simultaneously. Phil could plan a city at the same time as being able to bang in a nail in order to start the process. Phil has been an incredible Secretary for our board and his meticulous records have kept us all on track.

I sincerely thank Michael, Rob and Phil for their practical work and for their energy at our meetings. I will miss their input, but know that each one will still be available at the end of the phone should we need them. It is with great excitement that I welcome onto the board, the following new members who are keenly looking for ways that they can be of support in 2015:

Kathi Quick Brett Joyce Brendan Jones Jess Lothian

It is with great pleasure that I thank Mrs. Annmaree Carmichael who has agreed to take on the role of Chairperson of this vital part of our school community. Annmaree has shown through dedication, passion and downright hard work that she is the right person to lead us in 2015. We wish her and all new board members God’s Blessings as they undertake these important roles.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Cor 12:4-7

Anne Ryan’s Retirement Join us at Mass on Friday 20th March at 9:15am to celebrate Anne Ryan’s retirement from St Monica’s School. It is rare for a teacher to give 40 years of continuous service to one school and we are honoured to be able to celebrate this wonderful achievement. Morning Tea will follow Mass. Come along to the Symons Centre and celebrate this momentous occasion. Morning Tea will be supplied by the

Parents’ Association and we thank them sincerely for their incredible hospitality.

Year Six Excursion to Moonee Valley Council On Tuesday the Year Sixes were offered the unique opportunity to visit the Moonee Valley Council Chambers and meet Mayor Narelle Sharpe. The students learned a lot about their local council and what it means to be an active citizen. They explored the role of the council and the services it provides. Cr. Narelle answered the many questions posed by the students that will now assist them to complete their Inquiry project on the Australian Government and Parliamentary System. Thank you Cr. Narelle Sharpe!
