Dear Parents,

Yesterday we had our Annual Open Day and I was delighted to welcome a huge number of families to our

school. The visitors were genuinely amazed at the size of our school’s campus and loved seeing inside the

various buildings that make up our school. The children proudly showed off their learning! Today we

hosted the Regional Mathematics Leaders Meeting and tomorrow we will host a visit from 40 students

from Australian Catholic University, who are keen to see our Learning and Teaching practices in action. It

has been a busy week!

Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of St. Patrick, signifying the beginning of Catholic Education Week. The

School Captains, Vice Captains and Social Justice Captains will be accompanying both me and Mr Di

Nuzzo to the Archbishop’s Mass at the Cathedral. We will pray for the community of St. Monica’s.

Last week we were very excited to welcome the delivery of

our very own 3D Printer. In partnership with “333D” a

company owned by one of our school families, we have begun

to look at the huge number of educational possibilities for this

revolutionary form of printing. It’s early days yet, but the

excitement is mounting. I asked Liam (pictured right) to

photograph the installation (and to take notes) as a

representative of the students. He was very excited to be a part

of the installation team.

Most 3D printers are small and limited in size. Our printer

is ...massive! We will be able to print a large number of small

objects simultaneously. We’ve experimented with a few ideas

since the printer arrived and over the coming weeks we hope

to expand the use of this exciting new tool for learning.

The printer will be housed in our Senior Learning Centre and

will be used across the school as we investigate ways that this

machine can enhance our curriculum. 3D Printing is becoming

very sophisticated and to inspire our imaginations, 333D have

let us borrow a 3D-printed replica model of a sabre-tooth tiger

skull. It certainly gives us an idea of the endless possibilities

for the machine. Alongside pre-prepared models, we hope to

be able to print an array of models that the children will design

themselves. It really is giving us a ‘brain buzz’ and stretching the limits of our thinking.

I am grateful to 333D for their incredible support. Exposing the children to this exciting tool is a wonderful

opportunity for our school and I am looking forward to the ways in which this will engage our student

minds in meaningful learning.

Essendon District Tennis Trials

Congratulations to Siena Mariani, who recently participated in the Essendon District

Tennis Trials and has successfully qualified for the Regional Finals to be held at

Bayside College in Williamstown on Monday 24 April. We wish her all the best for a

successful competition.

3D Printing

3D Printing has arrived at St Monica’s! The Year 4 students are comparing

Australia to Africa in their Geography Unit ….so what better way to road

test our new printer by creating a 3D representation of the shape outline of

Australia and Africa!

Dear Parents & Carers,

At St Monica’s we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone! You are an

important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping

bullying involves everyone.

What is bullying?

Bullying is when one person (or a group of people) with more power than someone else tries to upset or

hurt them. This power can come from being more popular, stronger or part of the group. They might

repeatedly try to hurt the person physically, socially isolate them, or say and do mean or humiliating

things to them.

Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious or hidden.

If someone behaves in a mean or aggressive way on one occasion it isn’t bullying, even though it is not

respectful or acceptable. A disagreement between two people of equal power isn’t bullying.

Bullying is not OK. It feels awful. You feel like you can’t stop it. You have the right to feel safe.

What do I do if my child talks to me about bullying?

Sometimes it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about

bullying.

This week children will bring home cards setting out what parents

and children can do to stop bullying if it does happen. Discussing

the tips and strategies on these cards with your child will help

continue to make St Monica’s a great school for everyone.

What strategies can my child use if they are being bullied in

person?

•ignore them

•tell them to stop and then walk away

•pretend you don’t care

•go somewhere safe

•get support from friends

What strategies can my child use if they are being bullied

online?

•avoid responding to the bullying

•block and report anyone who is bullying online

•protect identities online by using privacy settings and

keeping records

What should my child do if the bullying doesn’t stop?

• talk to an adult (parent, teacher) who can help stop the bullying

• keep asking for support until the bullying stops

St Monica’s is officially a Star Weaving School!

As part of the Stars School Challenge for the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence we

have pledged to weave 500 stars by the end of Term 2 (June 30, 2017). The project represents St Mon-

ica’s Primary School’s commitment towards a bullying and violence free environment.

One Million Stars to End Violence is a peaceful global weaving project that engages communities in a

conversation about ending all forms of violence. The stars will be included in a massive art installation at

the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.

How can families be involved?

It would be wonderful if each family could weave at least one star to add to the growing collection of

stars being woven by our students at school.

Lengths of ribbon to weave stars are now available for

collection at the school office. Don’t forget to pick up an

instruction sheet!

On Tuesday the Year 6 students visited the Moonee Valley

Council Chambers and met Mayor Andrea Surace. “On behalf

of Year 6, we would like to thank you for spending your time

with us today and telling us about your work with Moonee

Valley and how you do it, so thank you. A couple of things I

got out of this was you take care of playgrounds, roads,

footpaths, libraries, activities, immunisation and many other

things. The population is 118,000, 47,000 households, cover an

area of 43kmsqm and you’re an Independent. Thank you

NOTICES 2017 FETE GOURMET DELIGHTS STALL

Money for Jam!

Are you interested in making either jam, chutney, pickles or relish for this year’s fete? The Gourmet

Delights Stall sells a wonderful array of homemade produce and preserves are it’s biggest seller. If you

have an interest in cooking, this is a great way to contribute to the fete and help raise money for our

school and its resources. At the moment produce is at its cheapest so if you’re interested in ‘making

hay whilst the sun shines’ please email Lynn Garvey at garvey@iinet.net.au or call me on 0437 252

948. There are many easy recipes to choose from or if you have a favourite recipe you are more than

welcome to use it. I will provide standard jars and lids at a small cost. Thank you.

Program Update Dear parents and children, This week at OSHClub, the children worked with Nairy to make pom-poms out of wool! They were super awesome and so much fun to create. The children also did the most incredible chalk

drawings and got creative as they designed their very own Willy Wonka Golden Ticket! Pop into the

OSHClub room to see their wonderful work displayed in their portfolios. When children are being picked up or dropped off at OSHClub, please ensure that you only park in allo-

cated parking spots. Please do not park in the Keep Clear/No Standing zones. It is unsafe and some par-

ents have reported this to be a hazard.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, quality skills-based

assessment program which rewards and recognises achievement. ICAS gives you broad insights into your

child’s performance across English, Mathematics, Science and Spelling. ICAS (sometimes referred to as the

UNSW assessments) has been developed by Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) since 1981.

Each student receives:

an engaging and challenging full-colour test booklet

an individual diagnostic report highlighting strengths and weaknesses and year to year progression

login details to access their online results which can be analysed and downloaded

a High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Merit or Participation Certificate acknowledging their level of

achievement

the chance to receive an individually-engraved UNSW medal for the highest scoring student in each year

level for each subject.

Remember, EAA has some very helpful tools to help your child prepare. You can access practice

2017 St Monica’s Fete, November 18th One of the things that makes St Monica’s great is our active friendly school community – the

community that has produced successful fetes in years gone by. This time around we want to

make sure that each family (especially new ones) have the opportunity to get involved. A school

fete is a great way to bring our community together, create friendships and most importantly see

our children experience what’s been created for them.

In previous fetes there has been an overwhelming amount of money raised. Whilst this remains

top of mind, our “school fete vision” this year is all about creating an amazing fun filled day for

children, families and the greater community. With this vision in mind, we would be extremely

grateful with your family’s involvement by nominating to do ‘just one task’.

On the next page is a list of ‘tasks’ we need to complete to ensure a successful fete. We will need

everybody’s support (large or small) on the day and also in the planning stages. So with the theme

of ‘just one task’ in mind, please tick one box (or more if you wish), include your contact details

and return this form to the school office as soon as possible. Then we can collate the responses

and when the time comes, we will contact you regarding participation.
