End results are the product of a partnership between staff, students and parents. If we all work together no problem will be insurmountable and outcomes will improve. As part of the staff working toward providing a helping hand is Paul Beyen, our Welfare Counsellor and Michael Walker our Chaplain. Both are very approachable and I encourage students and parents/guardians to make use of them. CANTEEN: The Canteen is an integral part of the School and it runs on the good order of volunteer parents. If you feel you can give a days’ work a term please contact the school to have your name placed on a roster. Another option is a donation of $20 to cover the employment of a sub to work in the Canteen for the day. The Canteen is desperate for volunteers or for parents/guardians to pay subs if unable to volunteer. BUILDINGS: We are closer to a resolution with the Science building and it is likely that rooms 27 & 29 will be closed to Science classes due to termite damage. While this is not an ideal situation it is a compromise between how much money is available and the number of Science rooms a School of KTHS size is entitled to. CAMPS, SPORT and EXCURSIONS FUND (C.S.E.F.) In 2015 the Department of Education and Training introduced the CSEF of $225.00 per student, and it has continued again this year. This money can only be used to pay for Camps, Sporting Activities and Excursions.

To be eligible to apply for this payment, parents/guardians must be in receipt of a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pension Card as at 1st day of Term 1 – 29th January. To claim for the CSEF payment parents/guardians must complete an application form, available at the school office and show their card, which must be copied. Please make your application a.s.a.p. The money will be paid directly to the School and credited against the family account. Terms and conditions have been placed on this payment, it cannot be refunded at the end of the year and it will carry over into 2019. If students transfer to another School, the money remaining will be transferred to the new School.

STATE SCHOOLS’ RELIEF - YEAR 7 UNIFORM PACKAGE As part of the Victorian Government’s funding for school uniforms, every 2018 Year 7 Government school student who is a recipient of the CSEF will be eligible for a uniform pack to the value of $225.00. If you applied and received the CSEF from your Primary School last year, you will be eligible for a summer package. Most parents will have already purchased the Summer uniforms, therefore you may use this “voucher” for a Winter package. The Uniform pack includes basic items:

Jumper or Rugby Top For girls: Summer dress, shorts or slacks

Blue, Maroon or Sports Polo Shirts For boys: Shorts or long trousers.

As KTHS runs a Uniform Store, which is open on a weekly basis each Tuesday, the voucher will be sent to the School, this will be issued to parents to use at the KTHS Uniform store. The voucher is valid for 75 days, from date of issue. The maximum voucher value is $225.00 and any shortfall will need to be paid by parents/guardians.

VICTORIAN CONVEYANCE ALLOWANCE - PRIVATE VEHICLE This is an allowance that can be claimed by parents who are required to drive their children more than 4.8kms to their nearest bus stop. The only condition is that you must not be bypassing your nearest Government School. Parents need only apply once when your child starts Year 7, and this will continue through Secondary School, unless of course you move residences. An allowance based on kilometres is paid per child per term to the School, which will paid to parents/guardians, usually at the end of each semester. Claim forms are available from the General Office, applications close on Thursday, 1st March. Those parents/guardians who are already in receipt of this allowance, are not required to complete another application unless you have a child starting Year 7.

FAMILY STATEMENTS School accounts will be mailed out next week. Payment can be made by cash or cheque at the Office or via Bpay. Payments to be finalised as per Parent Payment 2018 sheet which was attached to the Booklist. Should you wish to make alternative arrangements please contact the Office.

HOME ECONOMICS/FOOD TECHNOLOGY SEMESTER PAYMENTS As stated on the Parent Payment 2018 sheet, this Levy covers the said Semester Elective. Each class has food requirements, which requires the purchase of food products for these individual classes on a weekly basis. Payment is required by Friday, 23rd February, 2018.

Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic) are the leading body for youth advocacy. They are road tripping to see us in rural Victoria to ask US what we think are the priority areas for OUR region. This youth forum is being held by the YACVic CEO, Leo Fieldgrass, at Swan Hill Town Hall on Wed., 14th Feb. Young people of Gannawarra & surrounds should have a say about the issues which affect them. So, I invite YOU, yes you! to this great opportunity to share

your thoughts and opinions. The stronger and louder our voice the more changes we can and will make. Text 0407 346 359 / call 5451 0200 / Email:

[email protected] / Or drop into the NDCH office in Kerang (Fitzroy St) to chat to Justine or Rachel (youth workers) about your attendance at this forum,

transport options available.

Try to talk to your friend when they seem receptive, you’re both stress-free, in good moods and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If the behavior is potentially life-threatening, don't wait, talk to them about it immediately.

Be honest when you share your concerns – It’s important not to minimize it worrying you’ll offend your friend. Downplaying risky behavior could lead to serious consequences.

Be honest and straightforward. Try saying, “I watched the way you behaved last night and it really concerned me. Do you know why you behaved that way?” Don't say, "You were wild last night!"

This could mean approval rather than concern. Avoid accusing your friend of anything and focus on what concerned you.

Research possible solutions prior to speaking to your friend. Planning gives you time to find out ways to help your friend. If you’re afraid your friend is addicted to drugs or alcohol, look into treatment and support groups that may help. If you believe the behav-ior is due to a medical condition, talk to health care professionals about what can be done.

When talking to your friend, place the concern on yourself. Avoid telling your friend everything they are doing wrong. They will become more defensive, by making it seem like it’s more about how you feel, they may feel less stressed and more willing to make a change. Use “I” statements like, “I am concerned about you missing work/school so much,” “I am worried about how much you’ve been drinking lately.” By starting your sentences with “I,” you avoid placing blame and show that the reason for your talk is because you care and are concerned.

Talk about the consequences. People who live in the moment rarely worry about what’s going to happen down the road. They may have a “lightbulb moment” when you point out what their behavior is going to cost them.

If your friend has a drug or alcohol problem, say “I am worried that your drug/alcohol use will not only hurt your health, but could cause you to lose your job or even put you in jail.”

If the risky behavior has to do with sexual choices, tell your friend “I am concerned that you have unsafe sex with people and that you may end up with a disease or an unwanted pregnancy.”

Again, use “I,” sentences and also be clear of the dangers this behavior can result in.

Ask open-questions, which don’t have a “yes” or “no” answer. Don’t talk non-stop, instead, ask questions that get your friend involved. Ask “what do you think?” after you discuss your concerns.

Issues that you wouldn’t want to hold your tongue about are those in which your friend may be in danger or pose a danger to others. These include drinking and

driving, unprotected sex, theft or using drugs.

Offer to assist them if they seek help. If your friend seems open to talking about solutions, give some possible suggestions from your research such as speaking with a profession-al counselor. You can even offer to accompany them to an

appointment.

Determine if there is a reason for the risky behavior. Before you talk to your friend, understanding why they are acting that way is often helpful. You can ask other friends “I’ve noticed Peter has been going out and drinking a lot lately. Have you noticed that, too? Are you concerned?” Many different psychological disorders cause people to behave in risky ways. Knowing if a mental health condition is the underlying reason for your friend’s uncharacteristic behavior, can give you ideas about how to get help.

Enlist the help of others. If you are concerned you don’t know what to say, you can enlist another person, such as a school counselor or addiction specialist to help. Professionals can answer questions and offer support that you may not be able to, and they are experienced in having these types of meetings. If you witness your friend doing something

extremely risky and dangerous, you may need to enlist the help of Mental Health Triage or the Police. If you tell your friend to stop and they don't listen, call 000. Receiving

assistance in this way is the best option in extreme situations.

This will ensure their safety, your safety, and the safety of anyone else who is involved. Cheers Meg

Are you worried about a friend with risky behavior?
