Kia ora Parents, Whanau, and Caregivers,Nau mai haere mai! Welcome back to one and all for an exciting year of life and learning at Welcome Bay School. It has been a beautiful summer with lot’s of glorious sunny days and we trust that everyone has had their batteries recharged ready for the term ahead. It is so exciting to see all of the children who we know and the new faces who have come to join our school whanau.

We have had such a huge amount of new families visiting over the break and this week and to you all we say a huge “KIA ORA” from the whole team at Welcome Bay School. We hope you feel welcomed as a special part of our school community and family and look forward to your support throughout the year.

Open Door PolicyWe want all students to be comfortable at school. However, we also realise that there are times, when things may not be going as smoothly or as well as we may like. Over the next couple of weeks take a little time to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher – the better we know each other, the easier it is to talk. At any time of the year it is essential that you contact your child’s teacher if you have any issues, concerns or successes to discuss. It is best to keep lines of communication open and discuss matters early on. Remember there is always another side to a story and that a problem shared is a problem halved. Team Leaders are available to assist when necessary. Of course, it is also appreciated when positive comments are forwarded too !

CommunicationWe are constantly looking at ways of ensuring that parents are as informed as possible and feel invited to be part of the school. Of course….communication is a 2-way process, so please feel free to contact us with any ideas, queries etc. In a school of our size and with so much going on, it is very difficult to communicate everything.Website Check out www.welcomebay.school.nz - we will endeavour to update this regularly as another form of communication with dates relating to school events and activities and current school information.

We also have a new Facebook page which is another form of communication. Check it out and “like” us to receive the latest news from Welcome Bay School. We have a set of protocols around our page and it is moderated by an administrator (Mrs Lidgard) so any comments or 'likes' are sent to her.  Obviously being a school we are targeting our parent community and will not accept any 'likes' from our students, as they are not meant to have Facebook accounts until they are 13. Please check it out ;)http://www.facebook.com/pages/Welcome-Bay-School/527175813983284

FreeDuring the holiday break we had some new class room furniture arrive for our junior school. Our classrooms are looking bright and modern and like the kind of learning environments where great teaching and learning thrive.

As a result we have bits and pieces of old furniture including some chairs, tables of various sizes, desks, and storage cupboards available. These are all free to a good home, and as we have no space to store this they will be gone by early next week, so if you are interested get in quick and get your free furniture. :)

Property Developments over the break ;)We had a lot of work going on at the school over the summer holiday period. Some of the developments included the moving of the library and school resourcing storage from Room Kahikatea to Room Titoki (by the courts). This was a big job and necessary as we needed Kahikatea for a classroom in the middle team and Mr Thomson is now set up in there and ready to go. Our library is a major project requiring new shelving solutions, furniture and a major vision on how this amazing resource can better support and promote learning in our school and community. We have also had a complete makeover of the office and admin block including internal painting and wall coverings, new office layout and furniture, and modernisation of the staffroom area. We have also had a huge amount of new furniture invested in for classrooms and will continue with this resourcing focus. Rooms Karaka and Kowhai also have been modernised with bright new wall coverings. We will be looking to install heatpumps into classrooms that do not have these for both cool air con in the summer and warmth in the winter.

SwimmingWe are lucky to have a great school pool and we aim to provide quality, daily learn to swim programmes for our children. This is an important life skill and all children are expected to swim as part of the curriculum programme. Please ensure that your child/ren have togs and towel with them each day and are prepared for swimming. If children are unable to participate they will need to have a note from home, or an email to the teacher.

FitnessAn old saying suggests that a healthy body will equate to a healthy mind. Research regarding learning suggests there is some truth to this and we believe that children need to be fit as a part of being healthy and ready for learning. This year we will be focussing on every child participating in daily fitness. A fit body supports healthy brain function. If your child/ren is unable to participate in sport or fitness they must have a note or email to the teacher. Physical education is part of the school curriculum and an important part of well being. Thanks.

KICK Start: Transition to school programme This programme is for both new parents and children starting at Welceom Bay School and runs for approx seven weeks . The intention of Kick Start is to provide an opportunity for both parents and beginning children to learn about school prior to starting.

NEXT SESSION: Monday 18th February @ 1:30pmFOCUS: School Vision and expectations ;)

If you are interested in attending please call the school office on 5441113 and let us know you will be along so we can plan for numbers. Also, if you know someone who intends on enrolling at Welcome Bay School but does not get the newsletter please let them know too. We look forward to seeing you!

AttendanceBeing at school is pivotal to succeeding at school. Last year our whole school attendance was 87% for the year. This averaged out to every student at school having 4 weeks off school throughout the year, although in reality, there were children who had far more days absent. When you add school holidays to this it equates to 4 months of not being at school. This is simply not acceptable and can only be detrimental to our children’s learning. Attendance needs to be a priority for kids and Mums and Dads.

When we were looking at the attendance data we found it interesting to note that:Best Year group attendance was Year 3 with 91%Boys and girls were basically the same with boys at 87% and girls at 88%

We will aim for 95% attendance this year as a school. This is a goal for us all to work towards. Kia kaha!

Contact Details Please phone the school office by 8:50am if your child is going to be absent or late on 5441113. It is important that we are able to safely account for all of our tamariki.

Details changed? Please notify us immediately if your address, phone number, emergency contact details or work details have changed over the break. Email [email protected]
