STUDENT LEADERSHIP - STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

MacKillop College is a partnership between staff, parents, students, parish and the community.

Student input into formal decision-making is integral to our mutual success. A formal and

structured Student Leadership Council will provide a forum for students to express their

views and to have them heard.

AIM OF THE SRC:

To provide a formal and recognised process to effectively and fairly gather and express

students? opinions, suggestions and recommendations regarding relevant school issues and

in doing so:

- enhance co-operation within the school and encourage school spirit;- have student representation actively working with their peers so that the thoughts and ideas they bring

to council reflect the student body rather than their personal views only;- follow up ideas with implemented suggested and agreed to actions;- create a more enjoyable atmosphere at school; and- provide responsible leadership of the student body.

SRC RESPONSIBILITIES

- Attend fortnightly SRC meetings.- Report back at Assembly, Year/House group meetings.- When occasion arises Captains, Vice Captains and/or student leaders will report, liaise and discuss

issues that need to be addressed with Principal, College Leadership Team and staff.- Write articles in the College newsletter in order to keep students and parents up to date with SRC

activities.- Organise social and fundraising activities within the school and attend and participate in these

functions.- Assist with the induction of Year 7 and new students into their Year/House.- Be role models for the rest of the school with respect to behaviour, dress and courtesy by adhering to

all school rules.- Be available to attend all functions both within and outside of school hours e.g. Anzac Day march,

Parish morning tea, parent evenings, open and display nights.

I sincerely congratulate these students and wish them success in their role this year. I was fortunate enough to share in their Leadership Camp recently and was extremely impressed with their enthusiasm and sense of school spirit.

Mrs Jodie Rich will work with these leaders in 2018 and I thank her for her time and the support she has already given to this group.

ASSESSMENT AT MACKILLOP COLLEGE

Assessment is an important part of the teaching and learning at MacKillop College. It provides students, teachers and parents with feedback on student learning and important information to assist students' growth in their learning.

To ensure fairness to all students the College has an Assessment Policy which can be found on the College website:

http://www.pmaclism.catholic.edu.au/sites/default/ files/content/Assessment%20Policy%202018_Website%20Version.pdf

Assessment calendars, which outline all assessments students will have in Term 1, are now available to all students on the College Moodle page under the Assessment tab. Last week all students were emailed their Term 1 calendar.

Parents can access the assessment calendars via http://moodle.pmaclism.catholic.edu.au/mod/page/view.php?id=17637. Calendars for each year group are also located at the end of this week's newsletter.

I would encourage all students and parents to familiarise themselves with the relevant year group calendar and to consider carefully when planning days absent from school.

The aim of the calendar is to help your son/daughter to be organised and enable them to achieve their best possible result in all of their subjects. Due to the busy nature of schools the assessment calendar is subject to change, so I encourage you to please ensure you check the assessment calendars regularly.

In addition to familiarising yourself with the calendar I encourage all parents and students to read over the one page assessment rules and procedures document located on the Moodle page, especially in relation to expectations if a student misses a task.

If you have any questions please contact the subject teacher, the subject Leader of Learning or the Leader of Curriculum, Mr Chris McQueen.

As mentioned in my first newsletter, wellbeing is a focus in our school community this year. We, parents, children and school, all play a role in enhancing the wellbeing of our young people. SchoolTV is a fantastic resource for parents which equips them with knowledge and information on many wellbeing topics. The Healthy Body Series will be in the spotlight for schoolTV this term. The first of the regular monthly editions will be available in Week 4.

To commence the year on schoolTV, however, there is a special report on Cyberbullying available now. Many will be aware of the tragic circumstances in which Amy ?Dolly? Everett lost her life earlier this year as a result of cyberbullying. Dolly, as she was affectionately known, has since become the face of a campaign to raise awareness of bullying, anxiety, depression and youth suicide. This campaign is a legacy which Dolly?s bereaved family fully support with the intent of sparing other families from the same grief.

In this special report, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg highlights the dangers associated with social media and outlines how parents can help reduce the risk of cyberbullying. Preventing such a tragedy from re-occurring needs to have the support of parents, schools and the wider community; all of which must work together towards reducing the risks associated with bullying. Dr Carr-Gregg believes parents especially, need to be aware of the dangers and be proactive in not accepting bullying behaviour of any sort.

Here is the link to this special schoolTV report:

http://pmaclism.catholic.schooltv.me/wellbeing_news/cyberbullying-special-report

All archived schoolTV editions can be accessed under the Parent Information tab on the College website.

Let?s do it for Dolly.

INAUGURAL MASS

On Wednesday, 7th February, MacKillop College celebrated the beginning of the school year with our Inaugural Mass. Mrs Anne O?Brien, our school Principal who commentated the Mass, shared a short reflection on the importance of our school theme for this year which is Truth, reminding us that Jesus and our school patron, St Mary MacKillop, are both wonderful role models of the importance of being truthful in how we approach our school days.

We began with the lighting of our school candle by our new school captains, Est her Ting and Thom as Ber rym an , followed by students from each year group, who lit their year candle and Mrs Jenny Sewell, one of our teachers, who lit the staff candle. The lighting of the candles reminds us that the light of Christ will guide us through this new school year.

The musicians and singers, led by Mr Rob Denham, added a wonderful depth to the celebration and remind us of the incredible musical talent that we have within our school. I was very thankful for all the wonderful volunteers who participated in the Mass, by carrying out the readings, participating in the processions and altar serving. We are very blessed to have Fr Peter as our school Chaplain, and thankful that he enables us to make the Mass a very special occasion in which students, staff and the parents who attended were able to participate.

Following the Mass, the student leadership team of 2018 received their badges and formally accepted the responsibility and challenges that leadership brings. We are thankful that they have taken on these responsibilit ies and pray that each one of them will follow in the footsteps of Jesus to be a servant leader within our school.

VERIFICATION FORMS

All students received their individual student verification form via their PC teacher this week. Parents/guardians are asked to carefully check the details on the sheet. If necessary, make any amendments/additions clearly on the sheet, sign the sheet and have your child return it to their PC teacher by Monday, 19th February. Thank you for your support and assistance.

SUBJECT AND EXCURSION STATEMENTS

College invoices will be mailed in the next few weeks to all families. These fees are in addit ion to St Agnes? Parish School fees. Amounts will be billed for such things as the College diary, elective sports, elective subjects, excursions, performances, etc. As far as possible we have endeavoured to bill all amounts for the whole year. Please keep a lookout for these accounts. The account will include a letter outlining options for payment.

LOST PROPERTY

Parents are urged to ensure their child?s uniform items and other property are clearly labelled with their name. Already we have had items ?found?, however, they do not have names. If items are labelled we can return them to their owners promptly.

GOOD TO GREAT CAMP

The facilitators from 'Mancave' returned to Port Macquarie to follow up on the two day camp from last year. This was a great opportunity for the boys involved to revisit the key concepts of leadership, the qualities of a "real" man and the need for open and honest communication. It has been a wonderful success and planning has already begun to extend the program.

Congratulations to all boys who immersed themselves in the program and thank you to Mr O'Dell, Mr Littler and Mr Ashe for their time and assistance.

SETTING UP

Students will start to receive various in-class and homework tasks throughout the term. Some students may feel a litt le overwhelmed about this which is natural. To try to minimise this feeling it is a great idea to set up a study place and routine for students.

This is a place where their assessment schedule is on display as well as their timetable which each student was given or you can print a copy from Schoolworx.

It is also a great idea for them to have a set time which fits in with everyone?s schedule that they dedicate to school work or study. This way they are continually on top of everything and are feeling a litt le more organised.

MORNING TEAS

You will have received an email this week regarding morning teas. The morning teas are a great opportunity for you to meet your child?s PC teacher, class mates and other parents.

Please RSVP to this email as to your availability.

Morning tea will be served in the foyer of our College Theat re from 9.15a.m . t o 10.00a.m . according to the schedule below. Your children and their Pastoral Care teachers look forward to meeting you there!

Dates for each Pastoral Care group?s morning tea are as follows:

Students in Year 7 are always doing wonderful things in school and they will more often than not be recognised for their achievements in the newsletter. I am sure your child is also doing amazing things outside of the school. It would be great if we could recognise them for these achievements and let the rest of the MacKillop community know. So please email me the details at glitt [email protected] so that I can place this information in the newsletter.

YEAR 7 IMMUNISATION ? 21st March

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

A Parent Information Kit will be sent home shortly for the Year 7 Im m unisat ion Day on Wednesday, 21st March (not 21st February as stated in last week?s newsletter). Detailed information in relation to immunisation day will be included in a newsletter closer to the day.

CONGRATULATIONS

It is heartening to see that so many of our Year 8 cohort are willing to give up their time and talents in undertaking various roles and areas of leadership within our College. I believe it shows a great deal of character and commitment for students to put themselves forward to lead others within their class or cohort, and our community values their efforts.

I would like to congratulate some of these leaders, and wish them well in their roles this year. Recognised during our Year 7 ? 12 Inaugural Mass last week, congratulations to the Year 8 Student Representative Council members for 2018: Frances Duf fy, Liam Jones, Sea McManus, Phoebe Minogue, Asht on Scot t and Dom inica Toohey. Voted by their peers, I believe each one will bring a strong sense of community and leadership to the role of SRC member, and will be an active voice for their cohort.

I extend further congratulations to those students who have been chosen to represent their Pastoral Care group in Term 1. Commencing at 7.30a.m. in the foyer of the College Theatre, students and parents are invited to share a hot breakfast (supplied) together with our PC teachers. I am pleased with the way Year 10 have responded to the ?busy-ness? of a full cycle of timetabled classes. Although the increased independence and maturity by which many students continue their Stage 5 pattern of study is notable, we recognise the importance of family support to help your son or daughter implement organisational strategies that ensure there is a balance of schoolwork, commitments and rest. Year 10 are required to have parents check and sign the student diary every week and this can indicate whether your son or daughter is managing increasing workloads.

Thank you to parents who were able to join us at our Inaugural Mass last Wednesday. Student representatives elected to lead Year 10 were inducted during our celebration and blessed in their exercise of leadership ? congratulations TJ Avery, Benjam in Brennan , Lily Burgm ann and Pat r ick Lockwood to SRC and our House Vice-Captains Sier ra Cum m ins (Flinders), Maia Mar ino (Innes), Ruby Taylor (Macquarie) and Ryan Bollard (Oxley)!

The PC team recognise the leadership qualities of other students too in our year group. Therefore, two students from each PC will be nominated to practise communicating, motivating and organising members of their group in various pastoral activities throughout the year.

Every Year 10 student is urged to make a commitment to being an active member of the MacKillop College community as part of their holistic commitment, and will be required to nominate opportunities offered to them in which they are prepared to participate. Lent will be an ideal opportunity to participate in social justice and fundraising initiatives lead by Pastoral Care representatives.

By now, every student of Year 10 MUST have renewed their agreement to the Acceptable Use of Technology set out on pages 8 and 15 of the student diary and have this viewed and signed by parents/guardians. It is imperative that students commit to agreeing to the school?s code of behaviour and using electronic devices responsibly and ethically and for educational purposes as per their conditions of enrolment.

It was wonderful to meet many of you at our Information Night last Monday. No doubt many parents and students walked away with a wealth of information regarding both assessment, HSC requirements and the pastoral focus of our school. For those of you unable to attend, I strongly encourage you to read your child's assessment handbook and contact the College if you would like clarification. Students will have another opportunity to learn about assessment requirements in coming weeks at our year meetings.

On the whole, it is pleasing to see students embracing their role in public as ambassadors for the College and wearing their uniform with pride. On occasion a few uniform issues have been raised with students and opportunities have been seized to explain the details. Uniform policy is outlined in the student diary and we entrust that we will continue to move forward with such a positive attitude from students.

Students are now looking forward to the swimming carnival to be held in Week 4. This event is a valuable day for students to strengthen the rapport amongst their Pastoral Care group, build relationships, get involved and have fun. It is a great day that is sure to be remembered as a worthy experience for all involved.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Ella Heeney who was awarded the very prestigious Blue Award this week at a ceremony in Sydney. Ella was awarded this for her efforts and achievements in Cross Country. This award is not only based on results but on dedication, commitment and attitude, and is an amazing achievement to be recognised at a State level.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Wednesday next week is the senior swimming carnival. This is a fantastic day for Year 12 to get out of the classroom for the day and compete in a fun atmosphere with their peers. We had a great time last year and I am looking forward to the participation of all students.

STUDY TIPS

I have been meeting with students throughout the past few weeks about their study methods and routines. For most these routines should be well established, and just a few tips will help to refine their study techniques.

The most alarming and common mistake I find students making with their study practices is that they keep their phones or devices in the room with them whilst they are studying. In most cases there is absolutely NO reason for this to be the case. Apart from their laptops, students should need no other form of technology with them whilst studying, as it provides nothing but a distraction. Music can be played through bluetooth speakers if required and games or social media sites should not be accessed through their learning devices.

My tip is to use the phone to set timeframes. Place it in another room and set an alarm for 25 - 30 minute sessions. That way students can study free from distraction for half an hour, then get up walk to the next room and have a litt le break, check messages if it is that important to them, have a drink of water and reset the alarm for another study block. This should help to get valuable study time and still enable students to feel connected with their peers.

I have asked students to read through the tips below, tick off the strategies they already employ, and consider implementing some they may not yet use? It may be interesting and helpful for parents to read this so that you can help to support your child with some of these strategies.

St ep 1: Creat e a goal for yourself

This may be long term or short term. It may be the ATAR you are aiming for or simply to study a certain amount of hours per week. Perhaps it will be a certain mark or band for each subject. Put the goal somewhere clear in your room where you will see it and be motivated by it regularly.

St ep 2: Creat e a work space

This needs to be free from distractions, not near your TV or a computer you use to play games on. You will need a study book or notepads and folders, highlighters and at the very least a black and red pen and any other subject specific things such as your calculator.

St ep 3: Creat e a st udy t im et able

Be specific and realistic. Evaluate how you spend your time now; which things are essential? Which things can you change or move around to suit your study timetable?

St ep 4: Inform your fam ily of your t im et able

Ensure they are available to support you and help make you accountable for sticking to it.

St ep 5: Com m it t o your st udy t im et able and st ar t st udying

Make study notes following dot point guidelines.

- Ensure you allow time for your hobbies but NOT too much time.- Ensure you allow time for exercise.- Cut back on shifts at work.- Eat meals with your family, allow time for family. If you allow time for

them, they will understand when you are stressed, or too busy at other times.

- Study with friends / peers, make sure they are friends who are disciplined and motivated. Have syllabus specific conversations about your study. Conversations with your peers can often help to cement concepts or increase your understanding of ideas.

DANCE CALLBACK EXCURSION

Year 11 and 12 Dance students headed down to Sydney on Friday, 9th February to attend Callback at the Seymour Centre. Callback showcases the exemplary works performed by some of last year?s 2017 high achieving HSC Dance students across NSW.

The matinee show featured a Q&A session with the HSC Dance Supervisor of Marking and past HSC Dance students, who provided a valuable insight into the preparation and commitment involved when studying HSC Dance.

The students also participated in a three hour workshop organised by The Arts Units, where students engaged with other like-minded dancers in the areas of performance and composition.

The students came away feeling inspired and were very appreciative of such a wonderful opportunity!

ONSTAGE

Drama students travelled to Sydney on Friday, 9th February to attend OnStage - a showcase of outstanding HSC Individual Performances and Projects, and Group Performances from 2017.

The very early start did not deter their enthusiasm and excitement and the students were entertained by films, scripted readings and performances. They also viewed costume, lighting, set and poster designs as well as having the opportunity to read theatre reviews and research projects. Although it was a long day the OnStage excursion is invaluable for the ideas and inspiration that it gives to our students.

A big thank you to our Drama students who behaved so beautifully and who were so appreciative of this opportunity and experience!

YEAR 9 ? SMASH THEIR POOL SWIM

Year 9 students are to be commended on the manner in which they conducted themselves at the Wauchope pool on Tuesday. Swimming 200m in five minutes in no easy feat and many of our students completed this task competently as part of their Surf Rescue Certificate.

I encourage parents to continue to nurture this positive enthusiasm with your child at home by taking your child to the pool or beach once or twice a week. This will greatly improve their cardiovascular endurance and their confidence in the water.

Please ensure your child has a t owel, hat , board shor t s, sk ins, rash shir t or singlet and sw im m ers for their swimming lessons. If your child has a wetsuit it is recommended that the students bring this each week. Students will be required to wear a high visibility rash shirt when in the beach (provided by the school).

- Students are allowed to wear their House colours to and from school, and are reminded to wear closed- in footwear and, to bring their swimmers, rash shirt, hat, towel and sunscreen.

- The carnival commences at 9.15a.m. - all parents are welcome to attend to spectate or are most welcome to assist on the day. Please email Erin Denham if you would like to assist.

- The 100m events are swum during the senior carnival, however, for the junior carnival the 100m events will start prior to the carnival. Students need to be at the pool at 8.00a.m. ready for an 8.15a.m. start. If your child wishes to participate in this event they should have already written their name on the sports noticeboard.

- Appropriate swimwear ? the school has a policy on appropriate swimwear for any water activity. All students are requested to wear a rash shirt to protect them from the sun. Girls are ONLY permitted to wear full piece swimmers or two piece sports swimmers. Triangle bikinis are NOT permitted ? if these are the only swimmers that your child has they will be required to wear a rash shirt or t-shirt over their swimmers on the day.

Finally, the swimming carnivals are a highlight on our school sport calendar. This is a day where students can embrace our house spirit and get involved. All that we ask is that students get involved in either the competitive or novelty events and support the House Leaders to make our carnivals fun and enjoyable.

COMMUNITY SPORT

Congratulations to Lleyt on Wall who continues to achieve great success in the Triathlon ranks. Lleyton has started 2018 with a bang where he was once again selected in the NSW Triathlon 'Talent ' U16 Squad to represent NSW at the Australian National Junior Triathlon Series.

Over the past few weeks Lleyton has been gaining a great geography lesson as he travels far and wide to compete in the first two rounds of the series at Runaway Bay, Queensland and Glenelg, South Australia recording top 15 finishes and a 5th in the Australian/Oceania mixed relay Championships. Unfortunately, he will miss the final round in Perth as it clashes with the NSW All Schools race.

This is the second consecutive year Lleyton has been selected in this squad where he competes against state selected triathlon athletes from each state in Australia as well as New Zealand. Congratulations Lleyton, it is great to see you achieving fantastic results in Triathlon.

If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email myself or your child?s respective Leader of Pastoral Care so we can acknowledge these achievements.

If you have any questions regarding sport at MacKillop College, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone at the College.

ENSEMBLE PROGRAM

The Co-curricular Music Program is up and running! All ensembles are now rehearsing as per the schedule below. If you missed the ensemble sign-up and information kiosk this week and would like to participate in the Co-curricular Music Ensembles program please contact Mr Denham or Majella Starr. Alternatively, come along to the rehearsal for that ensemble and staff can add you to the roll.

STRING ENSEMBLE AND TUITION

I am pleased to announce that Lynda Young will now be running a String Ensemble and group tuition session on Monday afternoons from 3.45p.m. - 4.45p.m. in J14 music room. Lynda is an experienced piano and strings tutor and we welcome her to the program. The first rehearsal will commence Week 5 (due to the junior swimming carnival being on Monday of Week 4). If you have signed up for this ensemble you should have received an information note. Please contact Mr Denham for more information if required. New members are welcome!

MUSIC TUITION PROGRAM

Many aspiring music students of today often find ?DIY? musical instrument teaching resources through online courses, apps and youtube courses. Whilst such technology is a good aid for learning, research states that the best way to learn a musical instrument is through individual tuition from an expert teacher. Furthermore, the Stage 6 Music curriculum requires students to perform for assessment on an instrument of their choice. It is therefore necessary for schools with an interest in music excellence to provide opportunities for students to learn an instrument. As part of the MacKillop College Co-curricular Music Program students are provided with the opportunity to arrange private instrumental tuition directly with tutors at their homes or studios or at school in breaks or during class time.

Students wishing to join the Music Tuition program are invited to contact the Co-curricular Music Co-ordinator by email providing the following information:

- Parent and student contact details;- The instrument that you would like to learn ;- The preferred lesson time e.g before school, during class time or after school.

The Co-curricular Music Co-ordinator will then contact a suitable tutor on your behalf to check availability. The tutor will then call you directly to confirm and arrange a suitable lesson time.

INSTRUMENT RENTAL

Instrument rental is available at MacKillop College for students involved in the Co-curricular Music Program. A wide range of band instruments are available for hire including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone, violin, cello and guitar. The cost for instrument hire is $70 a term. These fees are invoiced to subject and elective accounts each term. As these fees are considered ?extra-curricular? this amount must be paid by Week 5 of each term and must not at any time run into arrears. The College will be responsible for minor repairs. Accessories such as reeds, valve oil and strings will be the student?s responsibility.

PERFORMING ENSEMBLES SHIRTS

All students participating in MacKillop College ensembles are required to purchase a shirt to wear at performances. This shirt will be worn with black trousers, black socks and black shoes at all performance events including:

- Assembly performances and school functions;- Lunch time concerts at the Glasshouse;- Big Band Blast;- The annual Music Showcase and Awards Night;

Students are to see Mr Denham or the Creative Arts trainee at rehearsal or in break times in the band room to order a size. Sample shirts will be available for you to try on.
