Welcome to our first newsletter for 2019. I would particularly like to welcome our Year 7 students and any of the considerable number of new enrolments in our school. We know you will enjoy what we have to offer here at Wellington High School. You will have noted that our front entrance has been closed due to the construction work being carried out. The new disability access ramp should be completed within the next 2 weeks and this will make our school entrance much more practical and inclusive for all. Clontarf Academy has moved in and the new staff members- Chris Daley and Mason Williams are now feeling right at home as part of our school. I am looking forward to their contribution to our school community. There have been a number of staff movements over the holidays. Mr Beattie has taken up a position in Wollongong and has been replaced by Ms Brittani Woods. Miss Su has moved to Dubbo and her replacement is Ms Samantha Whitney. Ms Anderson has been replaced by Miss Michelle Erskine. Jacob Forrest has accepted a position at the Pre-school but at this point we have not determined his replacement as AEO. I am certain that we have the staff to meet the needs of all our students and the school community. 2019 is an exciting year for the students who are involved with the REAL Madrid program as we will be travelling to Spain in the September holidays. The travel group is being finalised as we speak and they will face a busy year with their training and fundraising. Again this year we are increasing the amount of interaction with parents and caregivers by holding regular stage meetings and assembly presentations to recognise student achievement in all areas. I would like to invite you to join our parent group that meets in the school library every 3rd Tuesday at 6 pm. It is an excellent way to meet other parents and have an input into the education of your children. We would like this group to be as large as possible so that it increases its impact and provides a strong community voice. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and watch the school website for more detailed information. Finally, please ensure that students attend school every day and if they are absent for any reason could you please speak to the front office or send a note to cover the absence. Attendance has a major impact on student achievement as it is difficult to keep up with work if you are frequently absent. Rod Cosier Principal

NEW STAFF Miss Michelle Erskine—English Faculty. I have only recently moved to Wellington from near Gosford on the Central Coast. I really enjoy reading, swimming, being involved with animals, cooking (sometimes not very well!) and catching up on all the best Netflix shows. During my university degree, I undertook several study opportunities in Hong Kong, France, Belgium, and England – exploring social sciences, World War 1, and Shakespeare and how his works have been transformed over time. I hope to make my classes interesting, enjoyable, and a safe space where students can be themselves and share their lives.

Miss Samantha Whitney—Maths Faculty I grew up in the Northern Rivers, and studied at my local high school until year twelve. I took a gap year and travelled overseas. I studies a Batchelor of Mathematics/ Secondary Education at the University of New England in Armidale. I have the pleasure of working in a few schools in Armidale. I am now delighted to be a part of Wellington High School, and the community.

Miss Brittani Woods—TAS Faculty My name is Miss. Woods and ironically I’m a TAS teacher. I’ve lived in the Maitland area my entire life and this is the first time I’ve moved away from home. Growing up I always wanted to be a teacher but it wasn’t until I was completing my HSC Major Work in Year 12 that I decided to combine my passion for woodwork with teaching. I love to travel, research my family history and spend time with friends and family. I look forward to what lies ahead, teaching at Wellington High School.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and by doing so, equips them to participate more meaningfully in society. Each Clontarf Academy, formed in partnership with the local school is focussed on encouraging behavioural change, developing positive attitudes, assisting students to complete school and secure employment. Fundamental to this, is the development of values, skills and abilities that will assist the boys to achieve better life outcomes. Through a diverse mix of activities including all sports the full-time local Clontarf staff mentor students while the school caters for the educational needs of each student. For more information call Chris Daley 0419 231 067 or email
