Dear Families

Last week I had the privilege of joining principal colleagues and senior departmental

leaders at the annual School Leaders Conference. Much of our focus was on school

improvement. We also heard from our Education Minister Mr Peter Chandler and our newly

appointed Chief Executive Mr Ken Davies who returns to Education after five years working

in the Department of the Chief Minister, the Department of Housing and Local Government

and the Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment.

I will continue to work with individual parents and our School Council to strengthen our relationships, aiming to further grow our school wide partnership based on learning and respect.

In September this year our school undergoes a formal School Review and we are working

towards a positive finding that reflects strong school partnerships:

The ‘tone’ of the school reflects a school-wide commitment to purposeful, successful

learning. There are very few obvious behavioural problems and behaviour

management takes up very little, if any, time of school leaders and classroom

teachers.

There is a strong focus on quality learning and on the creation of a culture in which

all students are expected to learn successfully, in their own ways and at their own

pace. Individual talents are valued. Class ‘busy work’ (e.g. colouring in sheets) is

kept to a minimum, and an attempt is made to ensure that all students are engaged

in challenging, meaningful learning.

Respectful and caring relationships are reflected in the ways in which staff, students

and parents interact and in the language they use in both formal and informal

settings.

Parents are encouraged to take a genuine and close interest in the work of the

school and are welcomed as partners in their children’s learning. There are agreed

guidelines on such matters as greeting visitors, taking messages, and responding to

queries promptly and respectfully. (from the School Review Criteria)

Please join us next Wednesday 24 April at 8.40 am for our special Anzac Day assembly.

Nikki Robson is coordinating this event and more information is within this newsletter.

You will recall that our School Council members names were publicised last term. Please

contact them, they are your representatives. Members are: Chair, Andrew Green, Vice

Chair, Cyndee Seals, Treasurer, Stuart Palmer, Secretary, Pam Adam, Correspondence

secretary, Robyn Nowland, Parent members, Nikki Robson, Shona Butchart, Samantha

Pell, Douglas Wheadon, Melitta/Stephen Kay, Shannon Joyce, Staff members Pam Adam

and Guy Glover, Ex Officio, Nicole Manison, MLA Wanguri.

We are calling for parents to meet on a needs basis on the following committees:

Fundraising/ OSHC/ Strategic Planning/ Environment and Planning/ Canteen (Wellbeing)/ Preschool/ NT COGSO Representative. Please let the front office know if you can help

Kind regards

ANZAC DAY SPECIAL ASSEMBLY An Anzac Day Assembly will be held on Wednesday 24 April at 8.40 am. All parents, guardians and families are invited to attend what promises to be quite a special assembly, focused on Anzac Day from our children’s perspective. If you are a member of the Defence Forces, please feel free to come in uniform, to reinforce the significance of the day for the students. Children are also permitted to wear any family medals as appropriate, but will need to take them off for classes that day. We will also be holding a morning tea for all parents, guardians and families after the Assembly. We would like to be able to present students with their Military Kids Recognition Medal during the morning tea. If you would like to have your children’s medal presented to them, please advise me as soon as possible, so we can make appropriate arrangements. ANZAC DAY COMPETITION There is also one week to go to submit your entries in our Anzac Day Competition—open to all students at Wanguri! Submissions can be a story, poem or a picture that describes to us what Anzac Day means to you. We are certainly looking forward to reading your work, so don’t forget to have it in to your teacher or myself by next Monday! Nikki Robson 8927 1655

This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school – and all we need you to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths.

From Monday 8 April to Sunday 9 June, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Points. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Point for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Points onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Points Sheet and when it’s complete, the Points Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school.

At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students—including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. If you’d like to know more visit woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn

We have collected 180 stickers so far. Please remember to ask for the stickers at the checkout when you

shop at Woolies.

Playground safety The school’s playgrounds are supervised by teaching staff before and after school and, at recess and lunch time. This supervision is to help prevent accidents and to ensure that children can play in a safe environment. Supervision before school commences at 8.00 am and afternoon supervision ends at 3.00 pm. Children are encouraged to arrive at school at 8.15 am and go home at 2.40 pm. Please note that children in school grounds outside these times are not supervised.

Children's author Phil Kettle visited our school and talked to classes in Years 3 and 4. Isma Majid from Year 3 Staines would like to share her experience.

Yesterday I met Phil Kettle in the library. My favourite book was called ‘Trip to Darwin’. Phil Kettle is a famous author. He has been to a lot of places. I really enjoyed it. Thank you Phil Kettle.

Attendance and Punctuality Attendance and Punctuality Policy. We believe that meeting commitments, such as coming to school regularly and on time are important life long skills. Attendance and punctuality is also a significant factor in the successful attainment of Literacy and Numeracy skills.

Every student deserves the best opportunity to learn, and the best way to allow us to provide this is to attend school regularly and on time. All students are required to be at school before the morning music starts at 8.20 am.

Parents are requested to contact the school by 9 am if their child will be absent. This communication ensures the school is aware of the children’s well being and the class roll can be marked correctly.

Preschool Garden Bed Update

The preschool bed is almost done. The first thing we did was pull out the weeds

that steal our plant’s food then loosened the soil. While we were doing that we

found lots of worms! The next thing we did was mix chicken manure in with the

soil and covered it with hay. Next week we will plant some herbs and vegetables

in the new bed. Some preschool students came and we told them what we were

doing.

The New Rule

During recess and lunch, if you’re in your room

working you can have ONE light on and still get a

Power Police token. Save power by the hour!

Dear Parents and Wanguri School Community

Year 6 Brannelly are seeking donations of furniture for our classroom to set up some different learning areas. We are looking for furniture such as coffee tables, wooden bookshelves, wooden tables of all shapes and sizes and even a lounge suite. We also require cane baskets, again of all shapes and sizes. If you have any items you feel we could use we’d love to receive them!

Thanks in advance,

Year 6 Brannelly.
