With thirty-one attendees, we had a fantastic turnout to our special ANZAC Service and unveiling of the Great War Honour Board last Thursday. Thanks to everyone who was able to be part of this special occasion. We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr Ian Durham, Kay Turner and Bron Lucas who performed the official duties. The unveiling of the honour board met with a unanimous sigh of admiration by children and adults alike. Staff and visitors commented upon the highly respectful manner in which all students conducted themselves. We are extremely proud of you all. Thank you also to Mrs Kerry Symons who created a beautiful wreath for the occasion. Originally unveiled in April 1917, the board will be rightfully housed in a prominent location here at school. Included in your newsletter is a copy of an article written about the unveiling which was published in the Coolamon-Ganmain Farmers Review on 13th April, 1917. Kay Turner has compiled information folders about the soldiers named on the board. Those interested to learn more about the stories of our Matong diggers are welcome to take a look. The folders will be kept at school for a few weeks.

A Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea followed the morning’s proceedings with $180 being raised for cancer research. Thank you for your generosity.

People entering the school grounds on Thursday morning would have no doubt been greeted by our brand new Matong PS banner. Thank you to the P & C, and in particular Mrs Kristie Smith, for this purchase.

Shhh…..Students K-6, enjoyed a fun session making Mother’s Day craft with Mrs Rudder on Friday. Thanks, Michelle.

A big sporting week this week with Rosie Currie off to the Western Riverina Netball Trials and Mick Curry, Nick McCorry and Zaiden Bateup participating in the AFL NSW Paul Kelly Cup. We are also looking forward to a great day at the District Cross Country on Thursday 9th May at Marrar. Neena and I will be accompanying the runners. Students not attending the cross country will be at school with Mrs McGuiness and Miss Walsh.

This week, we are pleased to welcome Cathy Brill back to the Matong PS team for Term 2. Cathy will be reprising her role as a School Learning Support Officer. Great to have you on board, Cathy!

Students in Year 3 and Year 5 are reminded that NAPLAN testing is on next week. It is strongly

recommended that students get plenty of rest in preparation.

Have an enjoyable week!

Valerie McKelvie

Relieving Principal

Thank you to all parents/ caregivers who were able to help out on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, as we did not have enough helpers to ensure student safety, some activities had to be abandoned and students had to spend a lot of time waiting for their turn at each activity. We realise that everyone is very busy, but if you could possibly spare one hour for athletics training, it would help all of our students maximise the training time to develop their skills. Please contact the school if you can help. Training will be held on the following Fridays 10th, 17th and 24th May from 2 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

It has come to our attention that we have a few spare seats in the bus going to Altina Wildlife Park and would like to open this up, on a first in, first served basis, to parents who may like to attend.

Thanks to P & C, the cost of the bus is covered, but parents will need to pay entry to the park at a cost of $26. Interested parents should phone the school. Additional parents are also more than welcome to follow the bus in their own vehicle to join us for the day. Again, please let us know if you plan to do this, so we can add numbers to the Altina booking.

The ANZAC service

On Thursday we had our Anzac service. We sang the last Anzac, lest we forget and stage 2/3 preformed the ode. Mr Durham, Mrs Lucas and Kay unveiled the Matong Great War Honour Board. We raised the flag to half-mast to remember the soldiers that died in war.

And good luck to all the runners that are going to the District Cross Country in Marrar.

By Connor and Samantha.

A number of students are yet to return their permission notes for the Cross Country on Thursday. To date, we have 24 students that have qualified to attend, however, there have only been four families available to provide transport (enough for 19 students). Please return your permission note, money (transport & sport levy) and transport availability information TOMORROW, to enable us to make suitable arrangements. If there are insufficient seats, preference will have to be given to students who have submitted a note and have paid, with names being drawn from a hat. It would be very sad for anyone to miss out!

Don’t forget that lunch orders are due in by Thursday each week.

A course for parents experiencing conflict after separation
