PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
Adam Bush
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bush family as Adam, a former Mendooran
Central School student recovers in John Hunter Hospital after a tragic mountain
biking accident. The family have had a strong connection with the school over
many years and we wish Adam all the best for a full recovery.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN was a great success. Thank you also to the teachers who organised the
examinations and to the teachers and teachers’ aides who gladly altered their
timetables and class allocations to allow the examinations to flow freely.
Values Education
As reported last week, it was indicated that as a school we will be visiting the Core
Values of Education each week on assembly. Last week we did not hold a whole
school assembly as NAPLAN was being held and there were several changes in
organisation. This week we will be focussing on Responsibility at our Thursday
assembly.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Parent/Teacher interviews are this Wednesday 20th May at 3.30pm. Please contact
the office to arrange an interview time. My apologies, as I am unable to be in
attendance as I am required to be at a professional development activity about
teacher accreditation in Dubbo. When the parent teacher interviews were organised,
the departmental event was not scheduled. Please do not hesitate to contact the
office if there is a matter you would like to discuss.
Leadership Day
The senior students will take part in the follow up to the Leadership day held earlier
this year. It will be an opportunity for the students to showcase and evaluate their
planning with the P&C for the school fete. This will be held this Tuesday 19th May.
We will be hosting students from other schools.
Smart Money Coolah
Our Years 10 and 11 students are attending a Smart Money day in Coolah on
Tuesday 26th May. Mrs Mulligan will be accompanying the students.
Primary Zone Representation
Several Primary students will be representing our school at Zone trials on
Wednesday (touch football) in Armidale, Thursday (netball) in Gunnedah and
Friday (cross country) in Coolah. Thank you to the parents who are transporting our
students and we wish them all the best of luck.
Mobile Oral Health Clinic
The Mobile Oral Health Clinic is scheduled to visit Mendooran from Wednesday
16th July to Friday 28th August. The van will be available two days a week with
technicians travelling regularly from Dubbo.
Prior to the MOHC visiting Mendooran, children require an assessment of their oral
health needs and to do this Dental Therapists Stacey Webb and Kim Ryan will visit
Mendooran Central School on Wednesday the 17th June to carry out these
assessments. Please find attached to this newsletter a consent form. Please
complete a return to the front office as soon as possible.

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS All students had an enjoyable time and participated well in the Cross Country held on Friday. Well
done to Goonoo who were the winning house!
In Maths we have continued our work on Time (o’clock and for Year 1 half past, a quarter past and a
quarter to) as well as revising 2D and 3D shapes and counting by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.
In Science we watched some short video clips on how to grow rice and afterwards the students
sequenced information onto a flow chart.
In Personal Development and Health we have been using the Stop! Think! Do! (traffic light motto) to
solve problems. On STOP we define the problem, recognise feelings and identify goals. On THINK
we generate solutions and evaluate consequences and on DO we choose the solution and initiate
action. We are learning that the Stop! Think! Do! method puts thinking between feeling and behaving.
If anyone has any empty (preferably dried out) 600ml plastic drink bottles (from Coca-Cola,
Lemonade, Fanta, etc) we would greatly appreciate them for a reading centre activity.

YEARS 2/3/4 NEWS 2/3/4 had a fantastic time at the Cross Country on Friday with everyone doing a fantastic job! A big
thank you to Mrs Norwood for putting together and supervising the event.
Last week Years 3 and 5 took part in NAPLAN testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. All
students tried their hardest.
We have continued our topic of ‘Endangered Animals’ and have been using the computer room to
research different types of animals and the reasons for their endangered label. In the classroom we
will be writing reports on our individual animals throughout the coming weeks.
Just a reminder that homework is due in every Friday and is recorded each week so that students are
able to work up to a place at the homework party at the end of the term!
NORTH WEST TRIALS Good luck to Carter Swan, Jake Swan, Keira Turnbull and Ella Hartley who are off to Armidale on
Wednesday representing the Coonabarabran Zone in Touch.
Good luck to Ella Hartley and Victoria Monk who are off to Gunnedah on Thursday representing
Coonabarabran Zone in Netball.
We look forward to hearing great results when you all return to School.

YEARS 4/5/6 NEWS Well done to all those who completed the NAPLAN Tests last week. We are sure you did your best
and that’s all that you can do, we are very proud of you all. Our class had the privilege of being joined
by the Year 2 class while the NAPLAN tests were on. I’m sure they all had an enjoyable time with us.
In Science we will be starting a new topic where we look at the material world and hopefully we will
be able to join Mr Newberry in the Science Lab for some exciting experiments! Well done to
everyone on their efforts in the Cross Country on Friday and good luck to those who will continue on
in the next stage. Looking forward to the coming week at Mendooran Central School.

ROTARY YOUTH DRIVER AWARENESS
On Friday 8th May, seven students from Year 11 embarked on the RYDA excursion to
Coonabarabran.
The students experienced a series of practical and powerful workshops that addressed issues
associated with driving and using our roads safely. Our first session was on identifying Hazards and
Risks before we had the opportunity to ride in a car to experience stopping distances at different
speeds. In another session the students watched a powerful and emotional video on the life and tragic
death of an 18 year old provisional driver and her best friend. They also listened to an accident
survivor and heard first-hand how one poor decision changed his life for the worse forever. A local
police officer recounted his experience in attending a fatal accident scene involving a provisional
driver and how it could have easily been prevented. He went on to describe the torment he witnessed
when he was asked to deliver the news of the two young men’s deaths to their parents.
Our students came away with a new-found respect for the rules of the road and realised that a
driver’s licence is a privilege. Their behaviour throughout the day was impeccable. The
Coonabarabran Rotary Club specifically wrote to Mrs Waters, complimenting our students by saying
“The Club commends your students as to their enthusiasm, maturity and excellent behaviour
throughout the Day”.
The Year 11 students would like to thank Mr Washbrook for assisting with transportation on the day
and encourage students to take up the opportunity to attend the course in the future.

COMMUNITY NEWS DUNEDOO RUGBY LEAGUE/NETBALL
Congratulations to the U/15’s football team who
came away with a win against Coolah on Saturday
(344). Three of the U/13 boys backed up and
played with us after their own game. We were
short this weekend due to some of our players
having prior commitments, we really appreciate
their contribution.
The U/15’s have a second training session on a
Thursday night starting at 6pm. In our team, we
can see the extra fitness sharting to pay off. I am
glad to see the commitment from our Mendooran
players and parents, who have to travel to make
both sessions.
A big thank you must go to Brad Squire for
coming along to help train the team.
