Principal’s Report Happy Holidays With only a week till holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic break. The behaviour of students this term has, on the whole, been excellent and the entire campus has felt calm and settled, with students focusing on their school work. A lot of this has to do with how well the staff work as a team, under the leadership of the Head Teachers and Deputy Principals. The data we use from our SENTRAL system also reflects this.
our minor negatives are down 48% on Term 1 + 15% same time last year
our negative majors are down 38% on Term 1
our suspensions are down 54% on Term 1 + 30% same time last year
Farewell Ms Townend It is with a great deal of sadness that we farewell Ms Anna Townend next week, as she is leaving Kelso High Campus to take up a teaching appointment at an international school in Shanghai. This move presents an amazing opportunity for Ms Townend, however, it is a great loss for Kelso High Campus. As I’m sure everyone would agree, Ms Townend is an amazing teacher and leader and a wonderful person. Her impact on Kelso High Campus over the past 5 years is enormous. We wish her all the best for this exciting change. Ms Karah Logan will take up the Deputy Principal role until the end of 2020. Ms Logan is a very experienced and capable leader and will add a lot to the executive.
Congratulations Mr Petersen Congratulations to our College Principal, Mr Craig Petersen who will be taking on the role of President of the NSW Secondary Principal’s Council for the next 12 months. Starting in term 3 this year. The key function of the Council is to represent and support Secondary Principals in NSW public high schools, including advocating for students and negotiating with the NSW Government and other key stakeholders. This is a wonderful opportunity for Mr Petersen, who has been a key member of the SPC executive and a Deputy President for several years.
I will be relieving for Mr Petersen as the College Principal during this time. This means my role will change, however, I will still be around, and still working with students and staff of Kelso High Campus. I will also be working with students and staff of Bathurst High Campus and looking for ways to build the connections between the two campuses. Ms Stephanie Scott will be relieving as Campus Principal. Ms Scott is an excellent Deputy Principal and she is perfectly placed to continue leading the great work at Kelso High Campus for the next 12 months.
Congratulations Mrs Murphy Congratulations also to Mrs Wendy Murphy who will be taking up a position as a Curriculum Adviser, working out of the Bathurst Schools Office, supporting public schools in the Bathurst/Orange area. This position is for 3 years. After that time Mrs Murphy will have the option to return to Kelso High Campus in her role as College Head Teacher. Mrs Murphy has done an amazing job as College Head Teacher and music teacher and we wish her all the best for the next 3 years. Mr Michael Feening will be relieving in her absence.

Waste 2 Art Winner Emily Choi
Last term, in Science class, we learnt about ecosystems, especially about our dumping of waste in landfill and its environmental impact. One day, our teacher gave our class some information about a competition called Waste 2 Art and I decided to enter a piece made up of recycled things like plastic correction tape.
My art work is called "Our Pursuit, Our Perspective". The aim of this artwork is to contrast the devastation of our environment with a pure vision of our environment. It depicts a girl with a telescope (made from a plastic ice cream holder) on her eye. Behind her is a giant eye; this is to tell that the drawings inside of the 'eye space' are what we are looking at.
Beside her, there is a scene of burning papers and chopped trees which have been created by plastic structures such as the tape, and a turtle's nose bleeding with McDonald’s straws. I feel this is the most powerful image in my artwork.
I feel so grateful to have won the competition. I received a $50 gift card and I'll keep working to inform people the importance of acting for our Earth.

Music at Kelso High Campus – Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8)
As a part of the Stage 4 Music Syllabus documents, the music department at Kelso uses a wonderful resource from Musical Futures Australia. The syllabus ensures that all students studying music in NSW have experience in listening and analysing, composing and performing music of all genres and eras. The performance element of the Stage 4 Music program means that students must play and sing progressively difficult music. At Kelso High, we work towards students ultimately performing for others whether it be on a stage, in front of peers or in front of their teacher.
In stage 4, the Musical Futures program allows students to perform on a large variety of instruments, including but not limited to, guitar and bass (electric and acoustic), keyboard and piano, drums (acoustic and electric), ukulele (acoustic and electric) and vocals. Students can choose any of these instruments and are encouraged to experience more than one.
Musical Futures has a focus on:
Making music learning relevant to young people, and connecting their in-school and out-of-
school interests and experiences
Working through a variety of formal and informal teaching and learning styles ensuring that
their individual learning needs are met.
Valuing students’ personal musical interests
Motivating students first before moving them onto more formal learning styles
Making use of aural learning, that fully integrates listening with practical music making,
improvising and composing
Technique, notation and other forms of written instruction being part of the process, but rarely
the starting point
Catering to students of all ability levels. The program can be easily simplified or used to extend
students who have studied music outside of school or who have a ‘natural ear’ for music.
Research into the Musical Futures approach to music performance training in 11 to 18-year olds has found that it increases motivation (52%), provides a more stimulating curriculum (29%), raises standards (22%), enhances musical skills (17%), provides professional development (16%) and increases the numbers of students taking Stage 5 and 6 Music (14%).
(see www.musicalfutures.org.uk/c/reports+and+articles for the full report)
The repertoire is extremely varied in the Musical Futures program. Students can find themselves playing a medley of Black Eyed Peas, Bruno Mars and the Beatles on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals, learning the chords of G, C, Em and D to play ‘Shotgun’ by George Ezra, playing ‘Little Talks’ by Of Monsters and Men on the ukulele, working in small beginner groups on the bass by following the ‘Just Play The Bass-ics’ program or learn a rock drum beat by Chair Drumming.
This is an example of the information sheet students follow in the initial learning stage. It shows all chords for keyboard, guitar, bass and ukulele. Students learn the relevant chords for their chosen instrument at their own pace:
13
Students then follow a shifting screen with the original song playing which walks them through each beat, what chord or beat they should be playing or lyrics they should be singing and illustrating the changes in these elements.
As teachers of music, we have found that the Musical Futures program has allowed us to feel more confident about facilitating student learning in a range of musical genres and teaching a range of instrumental skills. We have found teaching music more enjoyable, we consider ourselves more effective teachers, we feel engaged in more personalised teaching and we have adopted a more practical approach in the music classroom.
We have also noticed a sharp increase in both student engagement, numbers of elective students in Stage 5 and numbers of students interested in learning an instrument.
Why not ask your Stage 4 student about Musical Futures and their practical experience in Music!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
The Year 7 Barton class were invited to attend a Charles Sturt University performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' to support their study of Shakespeare.
The play was performed by final year Theatre and Media students at CSU. The students really engaged with the performance and it was a really exciting opportunity to see the play performed in the Ponton Theatre.
The class were able to meet with the cast and crew for a Q & A session to explore Shakespeare's play and the process of preparing a production. Students asked really interesting questions about character, set design and how to understand Shakespeare and really made the most of this learning opportunity.
Thank you to the staff and students of the Faculty of Arts and Education and the marketing team of the Sprung Festival for welcoming us for the afternoon!

Help!! We are on the Hunt for Kelso High Memorabilia It’s over 10 years since the original Kelso High burnt down, and an amazing amount of resources and memories were lost forever … or were they?
An archive of the school’s history is being created. All of the copies of the Panorama magazines since 1976 have been scanned and saved. Photos of the initial building of the school in 1977, the fire’s aftermath in 2005 and the new school’s construction in 2008 have been added.
Do you have copies of any photos, articles or documents about Kelso High School? It would be especially good to locate anything from the old pre-2005 building. If you have copies of anything you think would be a worthwhile addition, please email them to Hans Stroeve at [email protected] If you need him to scan them, leave him a message at the school on 63314544.
