Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care (CHC30113)This full time nationally accredited course is delivered by Gowrie Victoria at Kensington Neighbourhood House. Gowrie Victoria is well known and highly regarded by local childcare providers for the quality of their training. Gowrie specialises in training and qualifications in early childhood education and care (ECEC) and have been championing good ECEC for over 70 years.

At Kensington Neighbourhood House we provide workplace skills training to ensure students have the best chance of finding employment after the course. The course is a mix of classroom teaching and on-the-job training in a childcare setting.

Prepare For Work in ChildcareThis 3 day course is perfect for those who are completing childcare qualifications or those who already hold qualifications. It focuses on building the skills you need to successfully apply for work in the childcare sector. The course includes learning how to find and assess job vacancies, how to address selection criteria and how to write a CV and covering letter. Local childcare representatives will visit the course to give you an idea of what employers are looking for, and we will even conduct mock job interviews to help you practice your newfound skills.

Create Your Own Micro BusinessDo you have a great idea or hobby you would like to turn into a business? Perhaps you’d like to use your existing skills and knowledge to earn an income from home? UkuleleThe ukulele is a fun, cheap and easy instrument to learn and is currently enjoying a worldwide surge in popularity. Social GroupsVietnamese/Indochinese Elderly GroupThe group meets every fortnight on a Thursday. Information sessions with guest speakers, gentle exercise and a meal alternate with a trip outside Melbourne. Bookings are essential. Fees are kept to a minimum. Family Literacy ProgramThis is a 20 week program that helps children in Grades Prep - 4 improve their reading. Our pool of trained volunteers with work closely with both the child and parent to improve literacy skills as well as gain strategies to use at home to support children with their reading. Code ClubCode Club Australia is a nationwide network of free, volunteer-led, after-school coding clubs for children aged 9-11. Each session children undertake a project that teaches computer programing in a fun interactive way using computer games, animations and websites. Movies that Matter‘Movies that Matter’ is a social justice and environmental film initiative. Improvisation GamesThe workshop aims to create a safe space for participants to explore the use of their bodies, voices and expressing capacity through play and games. Local TalentDo you have a talent or skill you’d like to share with others? If so call us or download an Expression of Interest form from our website to be part of our Local Talent Workshop Program.

Workshops are two hours in length and can be on anything from cooking to business skills. We don’t want to define the topic, that’s up to you. If you’ve got something interesting to share we’d love to hear about it.

The Local Talent Program runs monthly. Sessions can be Thursday evenings, Friday afternoons or Saturday afternoons depending on your availability. Presenters will be paid a modest fee for their time.

Introduction to Mindfulness MeditationLoretta Curtin will introduce you to mindfulness meditation philosophy and practice. It will include mindful stretching and breathing techniques designed to open the body and create more relaxation in the meditation postures. Suitable for all levels – if you can breathe you can meditate.

Buying Your First Home – Making Good DecisionsGeorge Lui will provide an overview of what you need to know before you take the big step of buying your first home. Introduction to Middle Eastern CookingSyrian born Mohammed Sharabah and his wife Salwa will share their love of traditional Middle Eastern food. Together they will prepare a series of dishes and talk about their origins and traditions.

Cross Stitching for BeginnersLouise Leong will teach the basic techniques for cross stitching, back stitching and tieing off neatly. Students will then be able to turn their small cross stitch into a gift card or framed picture. Suitable for children aged 8 years and up. Adults also welcome.

History of Local HotelsPhilip Rain will take you on an historical walk with a focus on the local hotels, both standing and demolished, in the Kensington, Newmarket and Flemington area.

Jewellery MakingSema Piyaratne makes beautiful hand-crafted jewellery. In this workshop she will teach you how to make a stunning necklace that combines crochet and beading. No skills required.

Composting – A Beginner’s GuideVisit Michelle Twyford’s backyard to see and learn about six different working composting methods. These include compost bins, bokashis systems for both pet and household waste, in ground worm farm, container worm farm, dig in the ground method and keeping chickens.

Volunteer and CommunityGet Help with your Forms and Other Documents This is a free program for people who need help with filling out forms or understanding bills or other documents. Our pool of friendly volunteers are keen to help where they can.

About us The Kensington Neighbourhood House has been established in Kensington since 1975 to provide a space for the community and its various groups and interests to meet, share information, develop skills and break down isolation or other community barriers.

In 2016 we were recognised by the State Government for our high quality education programs when we were awarded the Victorian Training Award for “Community Training Provider” of the year.
