NSW JUNIOR CHESS LEAGUE

Last week our school hosted the NSW Junior Chess League championships. Mr Birrell, an

amazingly talented group of students and three very hard working parents, represented our

school in a fine manner. Our students, as usual, played extremely well and we had one team

come very close to being in the top three. I would like to publicly acknowledge the work of

Mr Birrell who provides amazing opportunities for our students to participate in chess

tournaments. When speaking with Mr Birrell about chess, his genuine passion and excitement

for the students is clearly evident. Thank you Mr Birrell and a special mention to Mrs

Willetts, Mrs Bell and Ms Mackell for your assistance on the day.

WORKING BEE

On Sunday the P&C Working Bee was held where a number of families came along to help

beautify our school. Gardens were re-mulched, the Yarning Space was mulched, toilets

cleaned, gardens filled with new plants and the list goes on. We are fortunate to have an

amazingly supportive school community here at EPPS and this was demonstrated on Sunday.

I would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to every family who attended on the day, the P&C

who organised the event and Maree, our canteen manager who not only helped with the work

around the school but cooked a delicious lunch for all.

YEAR 7 SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST

Information regarding the Selective High School Placement Test, for students entering high

school in 2020 (current Year 5 students) has been sent home. If you are considering this for

your child, please adhere to the dates provided.

EXTERNAL VALIDATION

Recently our school underwent the External Validation process. This process allows us to

demonstrate through the collection and analysis of evidence and data, the outstanding work

that takes place at our school each and every day. Our External Validation team presented

bodies of evidence which they have worked incredibly hard on all year, to a panel in a two-

hour meeting. The panel was extremely impressed with what is happening at EPPS, citing the

ongoing work with our community as a real strength. This work will be available to look at in

the front office if you would like to drop in, take a seat and have a read. It is well worth taking

a look.

ANTI-BULLYING

This term our students and teachers have been engaging in some very explicit teaching and

learning around anti-bullying. I am hearing positive messages about the impact of this

learning. It is important however, to understand that it takes time for students to develop a

deep knowledge and understanding around any new learning. With this in mind a decision has

been made to extend the teaching into Term 4. Recently I worked with staff to do an annual

review of the school’s anti-bullying policy. As a staff we looked at some key documents

around anti-bullying and used these to support the development of a new policy. Once this

policy has been drafted, I will share with our school community at a P&C meeting.

FABULOUS FEATHERDALE EXCURSION – STAGE 1

On Wednesday, Year one and Year two students looked at many animals at Featherdale

Wildlife Park. First, my nan dropped me off at the gate. I played with Evelyn, Natalie,

Georgie and Olivia until the bell rang. Then, Miss Dunn marked the roll. Then, we checked to

see if we had our hat, drink bottle, recess and lunch.

Next, we went on the bus. I sat next to Evelyn. We laughed, talked and looked out the

window. It took half an hour to get there. When we got to Featherdale, we sat in the picnic

area and ate our recess. I sat next to Evelyn. I had Smiths chips, a strawberry milk and a

yoghurt. Then, we saw ghost bats. They were brown with wings. They had pointy ears. The

ghost bats were in an enclosure. After, we saw two turtles. The turtles had long necks and

small eyes. Then, we saw an echidna. It looked like a porcupine. An echidna’s back is sharp.

It was rescued a few weeks ago. Echidnas eat termites, ants and mouse guts. After, we went to

a show. The person who spoke was Caitlin. The first animal that we saw was a shingleback

lizard. His name is Ralph. Ralph felt smooth. Ralph’s tail looked like its head. When an

animal tries to attack, he tricks it with his tail. Next, we saw a tawny frog mouth. His name is

Captain Feather Sword. He felt very smooth.

Then, we ate lunch. I had sushi for lunch. We saw different kinds of birds. Finally, we went to

the toilets. We hopped on the bus. I sat next to Evelyn. We looked out the window. We played

hand games. Then, we went in our classroom and laid on the carpet and imagined we were in

a forest.

On Wednesday, Year one and Year two students looked at lots of animals at Featherdale

Wildlife Park. First, we hopped on the first bus and we waited for the bus to leave. We went

on the highway. I sat next to Charlie and we saw so many trucks. We saw many Toll trucks.

After we arrived at Featherdale we hopped off the bus and we walked to the front shop. We

went to the picnic area to have recess. The first animals we saw were birds. Then, we saw

ghost bats and wallabies in a shelter. We saw kangaroos in an area where they can roam freely

and we could go close to them. After, we saw an echidna show. The echidnas were eating

mince and fly eggs. The person at the show said that they eat beetles like termites and ants.

Next, we walked to another show. The girl presenting the show was Caitlin. The first animal

we saw was a shingleback lizard. His name is Ralph. Ralph eats ants and other insects. Ralph

is very smart because it looks like he has two heads. The next animal we saw was a tawny

frog mouth. The tawny frog mouth was hit by a car. The third animal that we saw was a

snake. His name is Tony. The last animal we saw was a koala. His name is Leo. Next, we

went to another picnic area where we saw a turkey.

For lunch, I had toast with blackberry jam. After lunch, we saw red kangaroos, snakes, lizards

and spiders. After we saw the reptiles, we saw a dingo and a crocodile. Finally, we went to the

toilets. We sat down for about ten minutes. Then, we hopped on the bus and we went back to

school. I sat next to Charlie again. It took about half an hour to get back to school.

Yesterday we went on a bus so we could get to Featherdale. It took a long time to get there.

First we saw ghost bats. They were in the dark. They were flying. Some were sleeping upside

down.

After that we saw a cockatoo. It was flying and loud. The cockatoo was flying all around.

The goanna was hard and long. It was walking. The goanna was slow.

The little penguins were so cute. They were swimming in water.

We saw almost all of the animals.

Rhys H 1LD

Yesterday I went to Featherdale and it was a long way to get there from school.

I saw a bilby. There was one and it was dark and there were not many of them in its home.

There were lots of rocks around it.

I saw a penguin. It was waddling in its cage. It jumped in the pond. It made a splash.

I saw a kangaroo. It was hopping with its joey. The joey was hopping to its mum. The

kangaroo was drinking from where the cup was.

I saw a dingo hiding in its home. We got to see its head. Then we could see its eye. It had a

home made out of rocks.

I love Featherdale.

Last Wednesday Years1 and 2 went to Featherdale Wildlife Park on 3 different buses. The

bus ride was twenty minutes and I sat next to Riley.

When we got to Featherdale Wildlife Park we had recess on brown seats. Then we went to

look at the animals.

After that we went to a place called The Learning Burrow and someone showed us some

animals.

Then we had lunch and went back to school on the bus.

Ava W 2B

On Wednesday we went on a long trip to Featherdale for an excursion.

First we had recess with our friends and a bird tried to eat it! Then we saw the ghost bats.

After that, we saw the kangaroos. Then we went to learn about other animals.

Finally, we saw the crocodile and had our lunch and then set off back to school. It was an

awesome day!!!

focusing on a whole school approach to healthy eating, including packing a healthy lunch

box, healthy fundraising and crunch and sip.

All parents and carers are invited to attend the information session to be held on Tuesday 30th

October 2018 in Room 7 at 2pm.

We look forward to seeing you there.

GARDENING WITH BUNNINGS

Last Wednesday a team from Bunnings came to help revive our hall garden. They prepared

the ground and assisted students to plant some native bushes. Many of these will produce

edible fruit or can be used as flavouring for meals. We would like to express our appreciation

to Bunnings for their time and donation of plants and mulch.

FABULOUS STAGE 3 WRITING

Sometimes I think time is trapped and it only moves around the clock because it is looking for

a way out. Or maybe that’s just me, trapped, looking for a way out, or could it be my mind?

No one knows. Nothing is predictable anymore. People think everything is impossible,

including me.

I’m Teddy Bookton and I hate my life. I am 15 and have no friends. I don’t like school and I

feel like I’m invisible, which I know I’m not, that’s the bad part. And … BANG BANG

BANG! What was that? Isn’t it Big Bill or Hilarious Harry or BAD BEN?

“Open the door! I don’t want to hurt you, I’m the time changer.”

I sit in shock. Time changer, from my dreams, time changer with brown hair, a suit and a bow

tie? I open the door slowly and it’s the same man from my dream. “Sir, can you pinch me?

YOUCH! Not that hard,” I shouted.

“I can go back in time and make it harder,” the strange man chuckled.

“Or you can go back and make it softer!” I exclaimed.

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome back Mr B!

I opened a book and I strode in. Now nobody can find me. I've left my chair, my house my

road, my town and my world behind me….. I've swallowed the magic potion, I've fought

with the dragon, dined with a king…. I opened a book and made some friends. I shared

their tears and laughter and followed their road with its bumps and bends to the happily

ever after….. I finished my book and out I came…. But I have a book inside me.
