Of course the timing of the Graduation is not accidental. It is designed to coincide with the significant decision-making processes involved in their SACE subject selection. We have over time witnessed the significant growth this promotes in individuals, as they are making decisions that help shape future pathways. The Graduation also coincides with other changes that many students are experiencing at this time, including taking on a part- time job, getting a driver’s license and generally developing greater independence. These are all elements of change and growth worth celebrating. As with driving and employment however, the senior years of study require increasing degrees of responsibility and commitment. We trust that the Middle Years of schooling have helped develop a solid platform for these students, and of course know that their teachers, families and friends will support them as the expectations increase. As mentioned at the assembly, we don’t expect perfection, but we do support and challenge students to do justice to their own skills, abilities and qualities as they strive to be the best they can be in all aspects of their life. I congratulate our Year 10s on their Graduation from the Middle School and wish them all the best in their upcoming subject selection processes and Senior School studies. Dear St Michael’s College Community, YEAR 10 MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATION

Last Wednesday we celebrated the Graduation of our Year 10 students from the Middle School to the Senior School. While this was a wonderful opportunity to recognize the many successes of these students, it is also a rite of passage that celebrates change.

Of course the timing of the Graduation is not accidental. It is designed to coincide with the significant decision-making processes involved in their SACE subject selection. We have over time witnessed the significant growth this promotes in individuals, as they are making decisions that help shape future pathways.

The Graduation also coincides with other changes that many students are experiencing at this time, including taking on a part-time job, getting a driver’s license and generally developing greater independence.

STRATEGIC PLAN – PARENT SURVEY

Thank you to those parents who responded to the recent survey relating to the development of our Strategic Plan. The responses have been most helpful in identifying what is important to parents, thus guiding key strategic themes. Below is a sample of the responses received to the questions “What type of school do you want St Michael’s College to be?” and “What are your expectations of St Michael’s College for your sons/daughters?”

• A safe, positive and spiritual educational environment for students, staff and the wider community; • A school that offers a safe learning environment for all students and creates its own reputation as a school of Lasallian

ethics; • to provide a sound education and environment where children can maximise their potential; • A school where teachers encourage and support students to be "the best they can be" in a caring and supportive

environment; • A school that offers a wide curriculum to students to enable them to excel in their chosen vocation; • An institution that provides a high standard of education and builds young people into strong adults. The College needs to

respect the rights and qualities of individual students to enable them to achieve their personal objectives. Regards John Foley Principal

REST IN PEACE

Mr Enrico Liguoro and Mrs Michelina Barone Grandparents of Joshua Liguoro

Mrs Joan Fryer

Grandmother of Lewis Tranthim-Fryer

Mr Robert Gillard

Grandfather of Mitchel Tassone

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

‘THE FLUTE’

The music of divine love plays uniquely in each person’s life. Through individual personalities and personal life events, the goodness of God takes on a melody of its own. The song of God needs an instrument to give it shape and voice. A piano is just a row of keys until someone touches them into life. A violin remains a mute stringed instrument until someone picks it up and touches the string with song. We are all called to be instruments through which the melody of God takes shape. Through our lives God’s love seeks to dance and make music for the world.

More and more I see myself as a flute, a simple, hollowed out reed, meant to be an instrument of God’s song. It reminds me that others need to hear the melody of divine love and goodness through my life. Such reflections encourage me to be a song of peace and harmony rather than one of dissonance and distress.

I cannot make the melody of God happen by myself. Just as a flute needs someone’s breath in order to have a musical life, so too, I need God to breathe a melody of goodness through me as I go on my busy days. I, too, must be receptive if God’s song is to be sung through me. Too often when I am frantic and pressured I slip into trying to do everything by myself. I think I have to control all the pieces and messiness of the days. I fail to call upon God’s power to give my life a focus and vitality. I struggle with getting things done, completing projects, facing the daily demands of meetings and responsibilities.

My vision of the flute gets swallowed up in my frantic efforts to be responsible and successful. I miss the possibility of allowing God’s goodness to sing through my being. Life becomes just another day to get through rather than a melody of goodness to be sung and shared

I forget to ask why I am doing things. What I do is less significant than why and how I do my work. So I need to ask myself often: why do I work? Is it to make a living? Only to be responsible? Mainly to be successful? To please others? How can my work become a sacred space where God’s presence is acknowledged and allowed to influence my activity?

I become God’s song when I open up and trust that God’s energy moving through me will create goodness and harmony through who and how I am.

Joyce Rupp is a prominent and popular spiritual writer. This extract is from her book “May I have this dance”, (from pages 140-142).

SECONDARY SUBJECT COUNSELLING INFORMATION Term 3 is when students and parents make important decisions regarding subject choices in preparation for future career pathways. These choices should be guided by student interest and success in preparatory subjects. Students in Year 10 have completed, or will be completing in Semester 2, the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) as the first stage of their SACE certificate. This is designed to assist students to identify possible career paths. Various parent information nights are designed to explain the subject selection process and SACE certificate requirements and I urge parents to attend these if at all possible. Mr Anthony Vizaniaris and Ms Rose Coorey are available for Careers Counselling and Mr Kevin Woolford is available for advice on VET courses. Appointments can be made by contacting Student Services. Critical dates for various stages of the subject selection process are listed below. Due dates for the return of various forms will be published on the forms. Your support in this important process is greatly appreciated and I can be contacted through Student Services to clarify any issues arising.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SPACE SCHOOL PROGRAM During the last holidays, I was fortunate to take part in the South Australian Space School Program alongside 30 other Year 10’s from all around the state. The intensive 3 day course covered an extensive range of bases, from astrophysics, lasers, rocket science to the history of astrology and the study of constellations, and understanding how these concepts are applied and utilised by the Royal Australian Air Force and the Defence Science and Technology Organization. We were able to play with military grade night-vision goggles, lasers, jets, helicopters and satellites which were both exciting and fascinating. By some lucky alignment of the stars, the program coincided with a conference on the Future of the Australian Space Industry, and gave us the amazing opportunity to meet many specialists in their field, as well as skyping graduates who are working in the space industry and to talk to students currently completing their PhD’s at the University of Adelaide. It was really great to learn alongside so many like-minded students and we have created lasting friendships as a result. We had a cool group of teachers running the show who challenged us to broaden our thinking, and I can honestly say that my mind has never been so confronted, intrigued and amazed in my life. I would recommend Space School without hesitation to the future Year 10’s with a strong interest in science and how the world works, as it can cater to many different interests and shows you how much you can explore within the space-science industry. I look forward to potentially taking part in the National Space Camp next year and greatly appreciate such an “out of this world” opportunity for igniting my interest within physics and astronomy. SCIENCE ALIVE ~ NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK ~ Saturday August 10 - Sunday August 11 2013 The 8th edition of Science Alive! will without a doubt be the biggest and best ever!

Key attractions include spectacular chemistry science shows in the Beach Energy Theatre; astronomy experiences in huge Stardomes; native animal shows and displays; magic shows; and the evergreen science presenters Rob Morrison and Deane Hutton with their special Curiosity Show presentation.

New this year will be the 'Fact or Fiction' Show by staff from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization which gives audience participants the chance to vote on whether they think the technologies shown in various movie film clips are real or fake. Members of The Institute of Backyard Studies will also make their Science Alive! debut with a range of fabulous contraptions and inventions.

There will also be Daleks! The Australian Dalek Builders' Union will be there in force, encouraging interest in the technology of Dalek-building and showing off their variety of full-sized Daleks complete with their threats to 'exterminate'.

Added to all of this will be booths from over 30 participating organizations - our three great universities will be there together with a wide range of community and business organizations all offering some form of hands-on activity to engage and delight children and adults of all ages.

Murtaza Hussaini (11KP) Lily Schubert (10FL) Melak Khaleel (10CO)

“I have experienced the hardship that refugees go through to find themselves a safe home. I am very passionate about taking on this Ambassador role at the ARA and look forward to finding new ways to support the refugees in our community in South Australia”.

“I’m really passionate about becoming involved with the ARA as I believe it’s really important to help refugees feel part of the community they live in. I have been really fortunate to come from a supportive community, especially the St Michael’s Lasallian Community, and I want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be welcomed into such a sense of community”.

”Coming from a refugee background, I understand the things refugees go through to find a safe place to live and have equal access to an education - an exciting and terrifying experience at the same time”.

On Wednesday 24 July, we had our first Youth Ambassador training day, where we met the team of Youth Ambassadors from other schools around the state. We shared our background, stories and knowledge of refugees with each other and discussed how refugees and asylum seekers are perceived within our society. We learnt about refugees in different countries and what they go through before they reach countries like Australia. The team participated in an activity which demonstrated how hard it is to communicate with others when you can’t see from their perspective which is why it is so important that you have a full picture of someone’s life and background before you make assumptions and decisions. We were all shocked to hear about some of the conditions refugees are forced to live in and the huge amount of strength it takes for them to endure the conditions in the camps. We established some plans on how we can help to assist refugees within our community and how we can help them settle and make them feel like an integral part of our society. A second training day will take place later this term, and we look forward to implementing some of our ideas for promoting the ARA, such as encouraging the community to participate in “Amble for ARA”.

MATHEMATICS CHALLENGE FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS In Term 3 a number of students undertook the ‘Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians’. The questions are very challenging and require a well-developed sense of how to work mathematically and think logically. Ben Fitzgerald in Year 8 submitted his work for marking and has recently been notified that he received a Distinction for his efforts. Congratulations, Ben! This is a well-deserved result for your hard work.

Mrs Anne Finlay, Head of Mathematics
