Year 8 English On Wednesday 31st July, Year 8 went to the Sydney Opera House to watch the Bell Shakespeare production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. We enjoyed this creative performance because the actors had great skill in portraying characters like Nick Bottom, Oberon, Helena and Puck. They made us laugh and it was fantastic to see the storey come to life. Afterwards we enjoyed lunch in the beautiful Botanical Gardens with a view of Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge. A big thank you to all the teachers who attended. Allyson Issa, and Tatiana Abi Nader (Year 8)

Congratulations to all the girls who participated and especially to the honour list above. Mrs Hackney Astronomy Night On Monday 29th July Cerdon College held its first astronomy night. It was open to Year 7 students as we are studying the solar system. It was held between 6pm and 8pm and Mums and Dads were invited. We really enjoyed the night. We found it fun, exciting and very, very interesting. It was fascinating looking through a real telescope up to the night sky. We even got to see the rings of Saturn and Venus looked like a huge diamond. We got to see where the Scorpion was and other stars as well including our very own Southern Cross. The evening was not too cold and some even brought picnic blankets and chairs to sit on. There were even some great interactive activities to do, as well as some interesting short films to watch if we got cold. We thank Mrs Tooma for organising this night and all the other science teachers who were there to help us. We all hope it will be on again next year. Serena Abousleiman (Year 7)

The Cyber Safety Summit The Cyber Safety Summit, held on the 2 August 2013 at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne was an informative and unforgettable experience. The day consisted of presentations from major stakeholders in cyber safety including Senator Kate Lundy, Minster for Assisting the Digital Economy,

Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Australian Federal Police. Representatives from Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA), Alannah and Madeline Foundation, The Carly Ryan Foundation, Child Wise, McAfee, Facebook, Yahoo! 7, Australian Human Rights Commission, Young and Well CRC and Telstra were all involved in the programme and discussions. The key ideas which surfaced at the conclusion of the summit were: • The importance of collaboration between organisations to work together. • To protect yourself from online predators on Facebook and Instagram etc. • When communicating with someone, it is best to use visual communication

methods such as Skype, Face Time and webcam accompanied by someone. • To read through the terms and conditions to recognise your rights

responsibilities and the implications of your actions on social media. • The importance of communication between parents and their children in

regards to their online activity. • Empowering by means of education- educating parents, teachers and student. • Implications of online activity. • Importance of presenting vital cyber safety information to kids and youth in a

way which is exciting and relatable i.e. through life stories, experience etc. • To hear a balance of the positive and negative effects of the internet and

technology. Everyone in attendance was able to contribute to discussions and research which were all conducted on the day. The presentations were all helpful, educational and a very worthwhile experience. Dorothea Noone 11F16

Softball The College has been asked to pass on special thanks to staff and students for their support of Jessica Micallef for her recent tour of the US with the Australian U17 Softball Development Team. Jessica not only had an amazing time in the US, but learnt many new skills and made many new friends.

PDSSSC Netball On Wednesday July 23, the College entered three teams into the junior, intermediate and senior PDSSSC Netball competitions at Jamison Park Penrith. Each team played to the best of their ability against strong opposition and thoroughly enjoyed the day. The following students are to be congratulated for representing the College with distinction:

Many thanks to Sarah Abraham, Tracey Abraham and Cheyenne Hancock, who gave up their time to umpire at the competition. Their expertise was valued and much appreciated and the day would not have run as smoothly as it did without their contribution. We hope to see more students volunteer for such roles in the future. Special thanks to Miss Hanson, Miss Meduri and Miss Brewer who organised the team’s entry, coached and guided the squads and accompanied the students on the day. PDSSSC U15 Soccer After rain postponed the original date, the rescheduled PDSSSC U15 Gala Day took place on Monday July 29 at Jamison Park Penrith. The staff and students in attendance were blessed with a dry day for the competition. The squads performed well, finishing second in their pool behind the eventual winner, St Columbas Springwood. Whilst there were many great individual performances on the day, it was the teamwork amongst the players that was most impressive. Congratulations to the following students for representing the College with pride: Marnie Case, Amy Burton, Hayley Fisher, Emily Banks, Alexia Abou-Hamad, Channelle Succar, Zaynab El-Hussein, April Sweeney, Natasha Milakovic, Chelsea Raslan, Mikayla Ozols, Emma Tuhmeh, Alexandra Boutoubia, Tayla Belcher, Chantal Cassar, Hayley Nolan, Julia Achmar, Catherine Le, Lauren Smith, Yasmine Abou Hamed, Lisa Doszpot, Kaitlin Allan, Amelia Menouhos, Emily Gittany, Emma Younan, Elisa Kilic. Sydney Dance Company Workshop On Wednesday 12th June 2013, Valentina Bajraktarevic, Amy Camilleri, Priscilla Tannous, Jessica Adamson and myself had the opportunity to attend a contemporary choreographic dance workshop hosted by Sydney Dance Company. The first part of the workshop was held at Connect Studios in Parramatta where professional dancers guided us through experimenting with different choreographing methods. The first method consisted of listening to a piece of classical music and drawing what it made us feel. From that we then were given time to choreograph a small piece, which related to the picture drawn. The second method we experimented with was partner work and was called ‘Silent Conversation’. For this exercise we had to make an action with our body aiming at particular parts of our partner’s body which was then followed by a reaction movement by the partner and so on. We were able to showcase to the group and the dancers what we had created using these methods. The second part of the workshop was held at Riverside Theatres where the dancers of Sydney Dance Company were able to perform for us showing and explaining the choreographic techniques they used to create each piece. As well as perform, they answered many of our questions, talked about their career and talked about the dance styles and choreographic techniques, which make Sydney Dance Company unique. Overall, the workshop was highly beneficial as we discovered new ways to express emotions and stories through the genre of contemporary dance. It gave us a new insight into the art and formation of dance. We were inspired from the amazing professional dancers of Sydney Dance Company! We all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and walked away with a new understanding of dance and its industry. Thank you for this opportunity! Matina Frelingos (Year 10)

Red Nose Day Police Fundraiser On 6th August, a number of Year 9 students attended the Red Nose Day Police Fundraiser at Ted Burge Sportsground. The day was organised to raise money for the SIDS Foundation to help save the lives of babies and children during their pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood.

We were able to experience first hand the life of a Police Officer and their transportation. The most memorable experience was being able to see the police helicopter land on the field. The Red Nose Day was an amazing day with a great atmosphere. We would like to thank you for your help as we were able to donate $1000 to go towards helping the future children of our world. Amelia Menouhos (Year 9)

Legal Studies On Wednesday 31st July, Year 11 Legal Studies went on an excursion to the Downing Centre Courts and to the Justice and Police Museum. At the courts we were able to observe various cases occurring, including cases relating to theft, drugs and robbery. The Justice and Police Museum provided us with insight into how courts operated in the past years and how they operate today, in which some students also participated in a mock trial. We had a tour of the museum where we saw weaponry confiscated from criminals during the 1900s and also jail cells from that time. It was a fun and enjoyable day out in the city where we were able to learn and understand more about the legal system. Budwina Youssef (Year 11)
