Term 3 Week 5 16th August, 2013 The Assumption On Thursday, our whole school attended Mass to celebrate Mary’s passing from this world to heaven. This is known as the Feast of the Assumption. God our Father, we thank you for Mary, whom you chose to raise into heaven, to care for all of us. May we follow Mary’s example of faithfulness, courage and strength each day in our own lives. Amen Family Masses The date of our next family Mass is 25th August. All families, especially Year 4, are asked to mark this important date in their diary. Wakakirri Last Monday night our school took part in Wakakirri. Wakakirri gives children the opportunity to participate in story telling using dance and song. The children who took part are to be congratulated on their performance. They had an exciting night and thoroughly enjoyed performing for a packed audience at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta. Thank you to Mrs Barber for her wonderful work in organising our school’s performance and also to Mrs Daines for her work in preparing the costumes. Our story of Hansel and Gretel was recognised for costumes, interpretation of story and music. We received a special award for ‘Most Creative Re-use of Materials’. Well done to all those involved in Wakakirri this year. School Uniform Our school uniform gives students a sense of belonging and instills pride in our school. The uniform should be worn neatly and correctly. Students should come to school with shirts tucked into their trousers and their ties, which are part of the winter uniform, tied neatly. Hair should be neat and simple and its natural colour. Joggers, for sports days should be mostly white, not bright colours. Please refer to our school uniform policy on our school website. Thank you for your cooperation. School Hours A number of children are arriving after the morning bell or leaving early before the afternoon bell on a regular basis and are missing valuable lessons. Part absences are noted on the roll which is retained by the school as an official record of absences. It would be appreciated if routine dental and doctor’s appointments etc could be made outside of school hours. If a child is arriving late or leaving early frequently, parents may be contacted by a member of the Executive. Information Evening/Kinder Orientation An information evening for new parents will be held on Thursday, 5th September at 7.00pm. Parents with children at OLOL are welcome to attend or to collect an information pack from the office. The packages for parents will be prepared shortly. If any groups eg sport, would like to include information, please send it to the office by Monday, 26th August at the latest. Parents are reminded that an orientation session will take place on Thursday, 10th October from 9.30am till 11.00am. Parent Group Meeting Minutes Copies of the last Parent Group Meeting held on the 11th June are available in the school foyer. The next parent meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 27th August at 7pm. Religious Literacy Over the next 2 weeks, students from Year 6 will participate in the Religious Literacy Assessment. Pilot study of Windows 8 tablets A pilot study in a small number of classes of 35 ACER Windows 8 Iconia tablets is currently underway at Our Lady of Lourdes from now until late Term 4. The school was approached by the Catholic Education Office in conjunction with ACER to explore the potential and impact of the Windows 8 platform on learning for both teachers and students. The Iconia Windows 8 tablet has a number of features; runs a full version of Microsoft Office, a full size USB port, long battery life, runs most windows 7 programs, uses Adobe flash in addition to a variety of apps. If you require further information feel free to contact the library. Going Google – New tools for the 21st century classrooms As educators we want to use the best tools to engage our students and prepare them for their future. Therefore Catholic Education Office has decided to embrace the Google Apps for Education platform. This platform creates a virtual learning environment; a classroom in the cloud, for students and teachers to create and collaborate using a range of powerful online tools. At Our Lady of Lourdes we are currently transitioning our Year 5 and 6 students from working within our school intranet to the virtual learning environment of, classm8. Year 5 and 6 students now have access to their own cloud space for storage of school work in addition to an email account. The school anticipates involving the Year 4 students in the Google Apps for Education platform later in the year. Cyber safety and good cyber citizenship are important aspects of working in a virtual learning environment. Currently Year 5 and 6 students are exploring ways to keep themselves safe on the Internet and to be good cyber citizens. The motto to being cyber -wise is to be safe, be respectful and be responsible. Additional information on cyber safety can be found on the classm8 web site. If you require further information feel free to contact the library. Summer Uniform Parents are reminded that after the Term 3 holiday break, the children should return to school in summer uniform. If you need to place an order for a summer dress, it is recommended you allow plenty of time for delivery. Uniform Shop The uniform shop will be open Wednesday, 21st August from 2.45 till 3.30pm, Friday 23rd August & Monday 2nd September from 8.45 till 9.15am.

National Mathematics Day Friday, 16th August is National Mathematics Day. 2013 is the International Year of Statistics, so on National Mathematics Day, students, teachers and parents are invited to collect data, display data and interpret data. Being statistically literate is a vital skill for all students today in order to understand the world in which we live and how it works. There are two main themes for this year's National Mathematics Day. Your place in the world relates to families (heritage, language spoken, time in Australia) and food (what we eat, how much, sources of food). The activities are developed from a personal perspective for the early years. About our world has a scientific focus, relating to weather and probability, and sustainability of food resources. The time frames start with a single day for the early years, progressing to weeks, months and years for primary students. Source: Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers Website http://www.aamt.edu.au/Activities-and-projects/National-Mathematics-Day-2013 Father’s Day Many thanks to all the families who have donated prizes for the Father's Day Stall raffle. There are some wonderful, fun and practical gifts that will make sure our prize winners are spoilt. It’s not too late to donate something if you'd like to, just leave your donation at the school office. Raffle tickets will go on sale next week for $1 each. Tickets can also be purchased on the day of the stall. The Father's Day stall itself will be held on Thursday, 29th August. We will have some great gifts that will be priced at $5, $6, $7 or $8 that your children can buy for those special men in their lives: dads, grandads, uncles, etc. Book Week Next week we celebrate Book Week. Book Week provides us all with an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work of Australian Children authors and illustrators. The theme for this year is, Read across the universe. We will celebrate the week by spending time in our classrooms and library reading a wide range of picture books.

On Wednesday 31st July, Year Four experienced a tradi onal

Indonesian shadow puppet show performed by Sumardi‐ a shadow

puppet master.

Here are some things we learnt and reflec ons on the show:

* It takes one year to make a puppet. Laura G

* Shadow puppet performances go for 9 hours. Charlo e F

* I really liked the short guy’s funny voice. Kieran

* The puppet is made from Buffalo skin. Isaac

* The feather represents the universe. Ben

* I liked how he matched the voices to the looks of the character and how he moved the     puppets and made music. Amy

* The puppeteer does not get a drink or go to the toilet while he is performing. Finn

* The puppet master moves the s cks and changes his voice. Jeremy

* I liked how he explained the puppets. I learnt a lot about Indonesian culture. Samuel

* The puppet master moves his foot to hit the musical instrument. Daniel A

* The shadow puppet master learns over 100 voices for the performances. Charlo e V

* I think Sumardi was good at using different voices for the different characters. Sarah
