Term 3 Week 9 Principals Message Dear Parents Congratulations to all staff and students for the magnificent performances in Hey Mate.... I am incredibly proud of the talent on display and the effort and commitment from all involved. Thank you parents for your support and we have really appreciated the well-wishing cards and emails and chocolates! We do this for kids and hope that this opportunity is an experience to be treasured for many years to come and the confidence gained may lead to many great things in the future. As I mentioned last week Mrs Saurins is off on a well-earned break and I acknowledge and commend her outstanding leadership in putting everything together. Today was the first of our orientation activities for children and the meeting of the buddies. Our Year Fives are certainly keen to take on this very special role and I was most impressed with ideas which came out of their training session. Being a buddy means: you can develop a close relationship you can teach them the rules and you have made a difference in someone‟s life. Well done Year 5. The school is very quiet today with Year 6 in Canberra, Year 3 at Camp Toukley and Year 1 at the airport. We hope everyone has an enjoyable and valuable learning experience. Our next opportunity to share a great day together is next Wednesday at the Infants Sports Day. Principal’s Message Dear Parents

Congratulations to all staff and students for the magnificent performances in Hey Mate.... I am incredibly

proud of the talent on display and the effort and commitment from all involved. Thank you parents for

your support and we have really appreciated the well-wishing cards and emails and chocolates! We do

this for kids and hope that this opportunity is an experience to be treasured for many years to come and

the confidence gained may lead to many great things in the future.

As I mentioned last week Mrs Saurins is off on a well-earned break and I acknowledge and commend

her outstanding leadership in putting everything together.

Today was the first of our orientation activities for children and the meeting of the buddies. Our Year

Fives are certainly keen to take on this very special role and I was most impressed with ideas which

came out of their training session. Being a buddy means:

you can develop a close relationship

you can teach them the rules and

you have made a difference in someone‟s life. Well done Year 5.

The school is very quiet today with Year 6 in Canberra, Year 3 at Camp Toukley and Year 1 at the

airport. We hope everyone has an enjoyable and valuable learning experience.

Our next opportunity to share a great day together is next Wednesday at the Infants Sports Day. Mrs

Sturgess has organised a host of fun activities and the weather should be on our side

School News Coles Sports Vouchers The Coles vouchers program was a tremendous success last year with our school

collecting 96,000 vouchers. This translated into thousands of dollars worth of brand new

sports equipment for our children. We are hoping to do a little better this year and reach

the 100,000 tally. From last year’s experience it is worthwhile speaking to family friends,

relatives and colleagues who do not have school age children and asking them to also

collect on your behalf. Remember, the winning class with the most vouchers will receive

a special reward from our P&C.

KEEP BRINGING IN THE COLES VOUCHERS AND YOUR WOOLWORTHS’ RECEIPTS.

There was a scout belt lost at the Civic Theatre last week. It has Zac Hansons name on it.

If you picked this up can you please return it to the office.

Sport News Coles Sports Vouchers

Well done to all the students who are bringing in their vouchers by the hand full. There is a lot of excitement around the school about which class will win the competition and receive a fabulous sporting prize from our P&C. Some students have even gone as far as to sign up family friends, grandparents and other relatives in collecting vouchers on their behalf. Keep them coming in. I am sure we can reach the 100,000 plus target!

Regional Athletics

Congratulations to our wonderful sporting stars who will compete in the Regional Carnival this Friday at Glendale. Unfortunately Tom Hitchcock will be absent on holidays, however Matilda Campbell, Maddi Thompson, Eloise Dorans-Knowles, Jakob Ball, Bede Smith and Dawson Spruce are all primed and ready to represent the Eastlakes region. Good luck! Sports Stars

Congratulations to Trudi Peterson. This fantastic example of sportsmanship is not only wonderful on the field but also off. While being away at State Softball training for the week she was announced as a member of the regional cricket squad. She is also a central player in a number of school knockout teams. Great work Trudi! Primary Summer Sport

It is approaching that time already where parents and children need to discuss their sporting options for next term. Paid options on offer will be sailing $85, Water Polo $65, Water Fun $65, Tennis $25 and Aerobics $12. Free options include orienteering, soccer, basketball, cricket, softball and touch footy. Students electing free sports options aside from orienteering will rotate between activities each week to give all students exposure to a range of sports and skills. Orienteering participants will remain in their same group for the whole term. We have been able to reduce the price of Water Polo this term as we will trial holding it at Swansea Pool. The Water Polo bus will still collect sailors on the return trip. A reminder to all parents and students that only students who have participated in the Water Fun activity previously are eligible to nominate for water based sports. Sailing is only open to students in Year 6 Infants Athletics Carnival

The Infants Athletics carnival is on Wednesday 21st September. Notes have gone home earlier this week and need

to be completed and returned to the class teacher as soon as possible.

The theme for this year’s carnival is ‘Healthy & Active Choices’. The focus of the day is on participation, getting

along, being active and making healthy choices. Throughout the day students will participate in a range of fun

activities including Running Races, Egg and Spoon Races, Touch Football and Tug of War.

This year there will be a Coffee Van visiting Marks Oval to help curb any caffeine cravings you may have. In order

for the Coffee Van to run I am looking for some amazing, wonderful and fabulous parents helpers who would be

able to volunteer (for a short time) taking orders/payment. Please see Mrs Sturgess by Friday 16th if you are able

to volunteer some of your time on this day. Without parent helpers unfortunately the Coffee Van will NOT be able

to operate.

Parents and families are welcome to attend the day to watch their children participate and enjoy being physically

active. The following information may help you to organise your day better if you are unable to attend –

Kindergarten Running Races will be held between 10am-11am

Year 1 Running Races will be held between 11:30am-12:30pm

Year 2 Running Races will be split over the lunch break. Students in Year 2 Phillip (Red House) will have running

races at 12:30pm. Students in Cook (Yellow), Tasman (Green) and Phillip (Blue) will have running races between

1:30pm-2:15pm.

Students wanting to order their lunch from the canteen need to have orders in at the school canteen by 9:00am,

the morning of the carnival. If you are available to help in the canteen please see Margaret.

Band News Congratulations to all the band members who performed wonderfully both at our show at the Civic last week, and

as part of the Bands In The Schools day (BandITS) on Sunday. It was a busy week for us all but you showed real

commitment and excellence during both performances.

Tutoring - Please remember it is your responsibility to let your tutor know if you are unable to attend a lesson for

any reason. If you do not let your tutor know, you will be charged for that lesson. Keep practising - we have lots of

performance opportunities coming up.

A band blog has been started to help keep students and parents up-to-date with band news. Please see Mrs Blake

if you need help accessing or using this. A session will be run for band members some time soon!

Bandits

On Sunday 11th September 2011 Floraville Band played at Valentine Public School for Bandits. We played

Beethoven‟s Ninth, Twist and Shout, Raindrops and Apache. We saw our teacher Mrs Blake playing the clarinet in

the Lake Macquarie Winds. We also saw and listened to HCCRWE – a band made up of the best student

musicians from all around the Hunter/Central Coast region, including our very own Nick IIlievski. Two of the best

boys from FPS stayed and played the trumpet in the mass band.

Building self esteem

It‟s never too early to help build self-esteem and resilience in a child. Self-esteem builds a solid foundation for

people to deal with life and the many challenges it can pose. The Department of Family and Community Services

has a good publication on this subject, as well as more for grandparents who are caring for young children, step

families, single parents and coping with grief. Go to:
