FROM Mr Paul Jeffreys, Principal... I am leafing through the class photos. I do that a lot. I am beginning to have thoughts about each image as my eyes wander over the faces of nearly one hundred children. I find different thoughts come with each individual and I am struck with the sudden realisation that some images, some faces, are making me feel warm and proud and I seem to take just that little bit longer on them. I’m starting with the Preps. I stop at Thomas Gordon and I remember that it is his birthday today. I know this because every day he says hello to me and yesterday he added that it was going to be his birthday and he said he was getting a mouthguard. He made me feel special because he decided to confide in me. I see Addison Linskens and I am thinking how she is a quiet one and I am reminded that she never seeks attention and funnily enough to me, it actually attracts my attention. And I look down to Ben Peace and I am remembering him saying to me early this week that we were ‘best buds’ and it was like a candy arrow through my heart. I flip to Year 1 and Tom Heazlewood jumps at me. He wouldn’t talk to me seven weeks ago and now he says hello and I feel I am trusted. Lucille Aarons’ smile attracts my gaze and I thinking about the qualities of this little girl and I wish I could think of a better word but I can’t because I don’t want to stop and look for the best word in a thesaurus and I can only think of… ‘wow!’. I flip the page again and the 2/3’s stare at me. Along the top row I see Oliver Fenwick and I remember we got to know each other at camp because he kept asking me football questions and it drove me nuts. I am wondering why… why would he go for St Kilda? Brooke Hill and Ashleigh McNaughton are in the middle row and I am struck by how different they are as individuals; over a single term, one of them is saying less and the other is saying more and I am instantly amused that both cause me to feel joy. I flip again and I see Mr Smith in the top left corner and I wonder how long he will keep teaching and I think how wonderful it is that after teaching for so long, he still worries for the children… that they might not be ready. I remember thinking like that when I started teaching and because of that I know that he cares. Just next to him I look at Adam Crawford and I think about his quiet nature and that he never brags even though he is very successful at Tae Kwon Do and I am thinking he has every reason to brag, but for some reason he doesn’t and I admire him for it. Jemma White is on the bottom row and I instantly think about what Jemma said to me after I spoke to students at my first assembly at the school… “Thank you”. I wonder if Jemma knows how much those two little words meant, and I wonder if she realises how long something so simple can last in another person’s consciousness. I am amazed at this concept as I momentarily mull over this idea. And then right at this very minute, as I am writing, I have an epiphany. The children I speak of don’t seek attention. Some crave attention through all manner of words and deeds, and they get attention in different forms, on the spot. And I realise… there is attention that is long lasting and causes reflection and that it is not pursued but just happens, and there is attention which is instantaneous but lasts only for the moment. Its value simply floats away like smoke melts into the air. I am thankful for humble and quiet children who are comfortable in their own skin and don’t feel the need to thrust themselves upon others.

********* As a point of interest, you might like to know something about the narrative you have just read. By the time you finish reading this particular sentence, you may sense that the ‘mood’ or ‘feel’ has changed. The above piece was written in ‘the first person present’ and it is a style of writing considered

to be the most powerful. We can call it a literary device. Other literary devices included in the above narrative are similes, metaphor, alliteration and onomatopoeia (quite a mouthful). For many years I taught without any knowledge of such things. I wrote in the ‘first person present’ because I started reading a story to the 4/5/6’s yesterday and it is written using the same style.

SOMERS CAMP 2013 The following Year 5 and 6 students will be attending the nine day outdoor education program Somers School Camp from Tuesday 19 to Wednesday 27 November: Harry Wilkie, Anna Kelly, Hugh Roache, Sharah Allen, Dylan Ross, Bailey Dewan-Holmes, Jemma White, Isaac Hanson and Oscar Reynolds.

GRADE 2 to 6 CONCERT Once again congratulations to our students for a wonderful evening of entertainment presented at the Grades 2 – 6 concert last Thursday evening. The Grade 4,5,6 play, ‘Ali Baba and the 40 Bikies’ was humorous and fast paced with all the

characters portraying their roles with confidence. The Grade 2/3 musical, ‘The Gingerbread Man’ involved individual parts as well as dancers and ‘band’ members. The multi-instrumental and vocal finale involved all the students in massed items. The students were involved in many strands of the Arts: creating and performing in the areas of dance, instrumental playing, drama, vocal work and the visual arts. Thanks to all the students for a wonderful effort which I am sure from the many comments afterwards, the audience thoroughly enjoyed. A special thank you to Jane Higgins for the wonderful creative art pieces that decorated the school hall. If you haven’t seen the exhibition, please make a special effort to view the students’ work. It was a wonderful coincidence that the waterlilies that the senior students made in their class at the Ararat Chinese Heritage Museum on our excursion day, complimented the Monet Garden work that they had created in their Art classes.

Special thanks to Mr Jeffreys and all staff; and to Trish Symes, Corinne Smith and Annette Huf and all the parents for helping with costumes. You all contributed to making the night a great success. Heather Macgugan, Performing Arts Teacher

YEAR 6 GRADUATION PRACTICES The Grade 6 students are busily preparing for their Graduation, please encourage them to learn their lines and practice their pieces at home.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Ivo and Joan Over the last 14 years from 2000 – 2013, Mr Ivo and Mrs Joan McLaughlin have grown thousands of tomato and vegetable plants for charity around Hamilton and for the Dunkeld Uniting Church in the early years and the Dunkeld Consolidated School for the entire 14 years. They have raised, with the community’s support in buying the vegetable seedlings, over $5000 for our school’s music program, absolutely amazing! We have bought many instruments and resources for the students to use from their early Prep musical experiences to the complex work that our senior students have performed successfully and confidently at the Hamilton Eisteddfod. Ivo and Joan have volunteered at the Eisteddfod for years, with Ivo as Treasurer for many terms. Ivo attended the Dunkeld School and has always encouraged our work at the Eisteddfod, with a card of congratulations to the students arriving shortly after their performances. They are extremely interested in our Kitchen Garden and have donated many seedlings for Lisa to plant. I met Ivo first as our farm accountant and as the years progressed he offered our school the opportunity to sell vegie plants, all raised from seed with the help of his beloved chooks creating compost to transplant the seeds into the milk cartons to grow under his home made cloches of plastic and wood. All plants were then identified and then meticulously prepared for transport to Dunkeld. Unfortunately, with Ivo and Joan ageing and not having the best of health, this will be their last ‘hurrah’. We thank them so much for their extreme generosity to our school, we are indeed fortunate to have had such wonderful benefactors and will treasure the instruments which many families will have the pleasure of playing for many, many years to come. Thank you Joan and Ivo. (PS: I will miss my visits to collect the tomatoes as Ivo has a very dry sense of humour and I always left his house laughing!). Heather Macgugan, Performing Arts Teacher

WORKING BEE THANK YOU Thank you to all those children, parents, friends and family who participated in the Working Bee on Sunday 13 October. Despite the weather being somewhat wild and wet we achieved a significant amount of maintenance, cleaning, moving and repair. Parents will no doubt have noticed a significant improvement in the amenity at the front of the school due to some wonderfully passionate weeders, the buzz of chainsaws was constant as branches, limbs and logs were dealt with. The Kitchen Garden received a makeover with weeding and mulching whilst some well-deserved cleaning and tidying occurred throughout other parts of the school. It was fantastic to see how many (and how big) garden/farm tools and toys turned up for the day - making quick and efficient work of what would have otherwise been a significant amount of manual labour. James Haley, Chair, Facilities Sub-Committee

MOWING ROSTER More helpers required

Thank you to the parents who have offered to help on the Mowing Roster. MORE VOLUNTEERS are required on the Mowing Roster for SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER - if you are able to assist could you please contact the school on 5577 2384.

HOUSE ATHLETICS SPORTS Tuesday 12 November

SCHOOL BUSES on Tuesday 12 November

The school buses (Woodhouse and Mirranatwa) will run as normal in the morning.

THE WOODHOUSE AND MIRRANATWA BUSES WILL NOT RUN IN THE AFTERNOON UNLESS THEY ARE SPECIFICALLY REQUIRED.

Please complete and return the attached form by WEDNESDAY 30 OCTOBER TO ADVISE IF BUS TRANSPORT WILL OR WILL NOT BE REQUIRED IN THE AFTERNOON OF TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER.

Rob Smith and I have been organising the program of events and we will of course aim to include every child. Please remember that ‘participation points’ are awarded. This means that every competitor gets something for “having a go”. The participation points are very important as they can give one house that ‘edge’ on the day. Assistance with setting up and packing up the shade marquees at the beginning and end of the day would be much appreciated.

If you are able to lend any assistance with the running of the sports please let me know or just see me first thing on the day. The more parents that help means that no one is tied to one event all day and is therefore unable to follow their own child’s progress through the program. Students are to wear their respective House colour (red for Wannon and royal blue for Sturgeon) polo shirt to the Sports Day. The school day will begin as normal at 9.00am. As soon as

possible all children will attend House Meetings. Wannon House Captains are Ben Cullinane and Victoria Mawson and Sturgeon House Captains are Isaac Hanson and Sam Riddle. This is a valuable time for our House Captains to work on the day’s program of events with their team members.

The sports will commence at 9.45am with the Long Distance events.

A program of events will be sent home for each family before the day – could you please ensure you bring your copy to the House Athletics Sports.

The House Sports are a great family affair and this year we would like parents, with their children, to join in the competitive carnival event by organising streamers and balloons in the children’s House colours – red for Wannon and blue for Sturgeon. We will be erecting the red and blue marquees to protect our children from the sun on the day and proudly displaying our school banner. So join in the spirit of the day and make this occasion a day to remember! Please remember your picnic hamper, rug and chairs!

CRE CLASSES In 2014 we will have an extra class so we will require another Christian Religious Education (CRE) teacher. If anyone is interested in assisting could you please contact Mrs Heather Macgugan on 5577 2277.

KINDER TO PREP TRANSITION PROGRAM Please find listed below relevant Transition Program dates for the remainder of Term 4:

Tuesday 12 November – House Athletics Sports Day – Dunkeld Kindergarten families and children are invited to attend. There will be a Kinder/toddler race for the younger children who are present. Please arrive by 2.00pm to enter your child in the Kinder race.

Thursday 14 November – Kinder students to attend the Dunkeld Consolidated School from 9.00am – 2.30pm. Parents to drop off their Kinder children at school by 9.00am to Mrs Debbie Millard and collect them again from school at 2.30pm from Mrs Debbie.

Thursday 28 November – Kinder students to attend the Dunkeld Consolidated School from 9.00am – 3.20pm. Parents to drop off their Kinder children at school by 9.00am to Mrs Debbie Millard and collect them again from school at 3.20pm from Mrs Debbie. An information session will be held in the School Kitchen at 1.30pm for parents.

Tuesday 10 December – Orientation Day – the Kinder children are to attend their 2013 School Campus all day (9.00am – 3.25pm).

GUM SAN CHINESE HERITAGE CENTRE We went to Ararat for an excursion and visited Gum San, which is a Chinese Heritage Centre. We first went and had a look around at all the Chinese objects and tools. We went panning for gold and learnt how to write our name in Chinese characters. The Prep to Year 3 students made dragons and the Year 4/5/6 students made lotus flowers. We had a delicious Chinese lunch which was Chinese pork, chicken, rice and vegetables and prawn crackers. Back at school Year 4/5/6 class made posters with our names on them in Chinese. By Anna Kelly and Sophie Schurmann, Year 4/5/6

TRICKTIONARY Tricktionary is a game of words and definitions. Students from Grade 4/5 and 6 were challenged to select words from the dictionary which they felt they could use to trick others. They were to provide two definitions of their own as well as the real definition of the word. Players are asked to nominate one of the three definitions as their thought of what the word really means. Good Luck!!!

From the Kitchen Garden…

On behalf of the SAKG program I wish to thank all of you that helped in any way at the market in the park last Saturday. Our aim was to promote our program in the wider community and also to raise funds. I thank those that made kind donations and those that made purchases. I thank those that donated goods for sale and those that 'called in' to the marquee to chat and ask questions. The success of the program relies on your generosity and continued support. This term in the kitchen we will be concentrating on how we adapt the recipe to accommodate our harvest. This is a great skill to have, to know what foods can be substituted that are in season or in abundance and what you may have in your pantry and fridge. Happy preparing and sharing together. Last Thursday, the weather was absolutely foul! But the entire school managed to plant their special plant in the Sensory Garden. At times, it got a little bit cramped, and noisy, and wet and cold, and windy and chaotic, but we got it done. And we'll always remember the day we planted it out. The soil underneath the bark is pretty poor, so we used copious amounts of Hopkins River Compost to plant into. Fingers crossed, that this combined with good weather, and care from the students, will set the plants up for a great burst of growth. We are so grateful to all those families that sent plants in, and we invite you to please come and see the end result (which is really just the beginning). It's going to be a beautiful space. The children are busy thinking up a name for the garden, one

that reflects the nature of the exercise, and the goodwill that it created. And still more "thank you’s" - to those families and community Friends that supported the program through their purchases or donations of produce and baking at the Discover Dunkeld market last Saturday. It was a very successful day, as we raised $472.80 for the program. This week we will be back in the garden, planting our tomatoes, zucchini and pumpkins (thanks again to Ivo and Joan McLaughlin for these!), as well as carrots, cabbage, silver beet, spinach, parsley, flowers etc etc. It's a great time of year! P & F NEWS P & F Event Calendar 2013:

TERM 4

Last P & F meeting for 2013 at “109” - 7.00pm Fri 29 November Christmas Stall (students’ Social Service) Mon 16 December

Discover Dunkeld: What fantastic weather for the Discover Dunkeld weekend! Thank you to all the many volunteers who

gave up their time, on such a glorious day, to be on the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden stall, the P & F’s children’s stall, and the second hand book stall. This was the first year that we have moved away from food, with P & F selling show bags, lucky dip prizes and mystery cups. It was a lot easier than cutting up numerous slices, running around Saturday morning trying to find power boards and ensuring that food was being served at the correct temperature. Hopefully with a few tweaks, next year’s stall will be just as simple and fun. Thank you again to all families who donated cups for the stall. We received 206 mystery cups and they all

looked fantastic! Thank you also to Lenny the Monster who gave up his Saturday. He provided many hours of fun to the children as they received their lucky dip prizes from him. Forgotten plates and

containers: If you have supported P & F this year with

catering and are unable to find a plate or container then it may be in the school canteen. Please feel free to collect it from the bench, located near the hallway sink. Christmas Stall: Just a reminder that the Christmas stall, as

with the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, is a Social Services stall. This means that the money raised at the stall

MISSING – SCHOOL RUGBY JUMPER A size 12 school rugby jumper belonging to Liam Fenwick is missing. “L. Fenwick” is clearly marked on the tag. This jumper went missing on Friday 18 October. Could students please check to make sure they haven’t taken the jumper home by mistake.

will be donated to local charities. Later this term the senior students will decide upon where the money is to be donated. Next Meeting: Please note that the last P & F meeting for

2013 will be held on Friday 29 November at 7.00pm at Café 109. An email has been sent out with further details, or you can contact Kellie White at [email protected] The P & F is for the school community and aims to benefit our students and school. The P & F committee very much appreciate all the support we receive from our school families.

Air Pollution and Asthma School age students and young children with asthma can often have breathing difficulties when exposed to air pollution. Air pollution can occur: Outdoors – smog (made up of nitrogen oxides and ozone), bushfires, cigarette smoke. Indoors – formaldehydes/resins (some building materials), volatile organic compounds (found in paints, furniture, cleaning products), cigarette smoke, poorly maintained gas appliances. The most important way to reduce the impact of air pollution on your child’s asthma to avoid the pollutant completely if possible.

Stay indoors on high smog days, close windows and external doors

Make sure you have a bush-fire plan if you live in a bushfire prone area

Make sure your child’s asthma is well controlled and that you and your child know what to do if their asthma gets worse

Make sure your gas appliances are serviced regularly by a registered or licensed gasfitter and that there is adequate ventilation in rooms containing gas appliances

Choose building items, furniture, paints and wood items that are certified to emit low levels of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds.

For more information about air pollution and asthma, contact The Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 ASTHMA (278 462) or visit www.asthma.org.au.

SES NEWS Training Dates:

27 November

11 December Wow another year has nearly gone by again. We only have a few more training nights left until the end of the year. We have had a quiet period again with one job of a tree across the road. We are continually looking for members to join us. If you can talk, use a broom, write, use a chainsaw or can drive then there is something for you to do at SES. You do not have attend road accidents but we desperately need day time members who can operate a radio, drive a vehicle or chainsaw a tree. If you have ever thought about joining please contact us or attend one of our training nights for more information. Full training and uniform provided. Contact us now so that your probationary period can be completed over the Xmas period. Phone 0418 353 292 (unit phone) if you would prefer a private consultation. We are also desperate for some unwanted vehicles. If you have a car or ute, van or light vehicle in your yard that you would like to get rid of then please contact us on 0418 353 292. These vehicles will be used to practice our Road Crash Rescue training which is an important part for us to keep up our accreditation. We are happy to collect vehicles. So if you have a vehicle

lying around please give us a ring. They do not have to be in working order. Until next time keep safe and start preparing your properties now ready for the upcoming fire season. Many thanks from the Dunkeld SES Unit.

DUNKELD FIRE BRIGADE Thank you to everyone who helped out with the Discover Dunkeld Weekend, especially Captain Koala and Patty the Platypus for coming along, they were very popular with all the children. It is a good time to start cleaning up yards and blocks ready for the summer bushfire season. Make sure you have your fire plan ready and everyone in your family is aware of what to do. If you are planning on burning a large bonfire you can register it with Vic Fire on 1800 668 511 to avoid the brigade being called out unnecessarily. To all members there is a Vector Command Tactical Simulator Training exercise on Monday 28

October at

the Dunkeld Fire Station at 7:30pm. Also our compulsory burn over drill will be held on Friday 1

November at 6:30pm with a BBQ. All new

members welcome. A reminder the Dunkeld Fire Brigade number is 0456 966 320. Michael Gordon (Captain)

DUNKELD COMMUNITY CENTRE PROJECT UPDATE The Community Centre project is progressing rapidly. What has been happening:

1. Appointment of an architect – Jacob Kelly, who has developed the concept plan, and is currently working on the detailed drawings which will be used for tender purposes.

2. Community viewing of the concept plan in August 2013 – the feedback was very positive. There have been further community information sessions this week which have looked at the kitchen design, heating and cooling; floor coverings.

3. The community appeal has raised approximately $83,000 to date. Thank you to Amy Peters who organised the Ladies Night Out at Café 109 in early October. This event raised $700 for the community centre. Thank you also to Malcolm at Café 109 who topped up the funds raised.

4. Wheelfun, the cycling event, was held on Sunday 20 October and was well supported with indications of greater numbers of cyclists next year. Sixty four cyclists participated in the inaugural event. There are already discussions about adding a shorter ride, a children’s ride and a longer ride through Mirranatwa Gap. Congratulations to Maree Willey, Sally Stevenson, Heather Cash and the Dunkeld Adventure committee which organised this event. Not only does it have great fundraising potential, it is a terrific opportunity to showcase the southern part of the Grampians and the surrounds of Dunkeld.

5. With the community appeal, funds held to date total $284,000 which is a fantastic effort from our community.

6. Planning permit application has been submitted to Southern Grampians Shire Council.

7. At least 15 expressions of interest were received from builders. A short list of builders, including local builders, has been prepared and will be invited to submit tenders once the detailed drawings are completed.

Thank you again to the community for your terrific support of this project. Mary-Ann Brown, President

DUNKELD PUBLIC LANDS COMMITTEE Wow, what a weekend in Dunkeld! Congratulations to everyone who contributed to making it a great success. I spoke to a few visitors from Melbourne and they cannot believe how well country people band together to achieve so much. Caravan Park: We are starting to get busy. A big thank you to all who helped us, when Gary was away. We are upgrading the electricity to the barbecue area. Gary has made this into a camp kitchen/relaxation area. Thank you to Laurie Gordon for altering the west side. The new unit should arrive the first week in November. We will be busy getting it ready for the races weekend. Gary and his brother Alan have done a great job cleaning up the dead trees along the creek. Salt Creek: We have sprayed along the tracks. Thank you to the Pastoral Company for mowing their land adjacent to the creek. It looked really good for the weekend. Planning is under way to re-sheet the track. Sawmill: We had a great day on Sunday. Many visitors came to look at the mill and see some timber cut. There are many people who supported the day and we are so thankful. A big thank you to all who contributed to cleaning the sawmill and getting it ready for the open day. A special thank you to Woody and Bill Blackwell, and Max and Kevin Clutterbuck for cutting timber and slabs. We would be lost without Alan Fort. He demonstrated his swing saw and chainsaw slabber, organised and displayed Peter Smith’s chainsaw collection, displayed his magnificent fleet of chain saws and provided extra equipment to make the day a success. Alan Dark and Tim Smith demonstrated the old autologger (dragsaw). Thank you to all who assisted by donating and shifting logs: Simon Armytage, Rex Beveridge, Alistair Beveridge, Robert Funk, Donald McArthur and Alan Fort. Andy Gordon shifted logs for us too. Simon Armytage was also kind enough to loan his telehandler. On the day we had great help from Kevin McArthur, David Gordon, Rex Beveridge, Craig Smith, Jim Dark, Cee Blackwell, Corinne Smith, the Fitzpatrick men. Thank you to Ted and Margaret Rowe for providing photographs. If I have missed anyone it is because I lost my piece of paper and the memory is fading. I must mention one of our keenest members, Donald McArthur. Donald wasn’t able to work on the day, but he attended, provided his sawmill and timber. Donald

has gone to Melbourne for a big operation and we wish him all the best, and a speedy recovery. Thank you to Dunkeld Adventure and the Lions Club for providing refreshments. Just over $100 was put into our collection box. We sold some slabs. There are some slabs to sell. Contact me if you would like to look at them. If you had something to do with making our day so successful, thank you. John Smith, President, DPLC

UPDATE FROM THE DEEP NORTH Helena and I were in Queensland recently and caught up with some former Dunkeld identities. Obviously our first port of call was Sandbrook, at Burleigh Waters on the Gold Coast, the current residence of our much-loved Dunkeld legend Joy Clarke.

Joy looked well - much better than when she last visited Dunkeld - and was as exuberant as ever. She was delighted to see us, and continues to keep close tabs on what is happening in Dunkeld - from this newsletter, the Spectator and contact from friends. In fact she was able to tell us the latest news from home (we had been away for a couple of weeks). As you would expect, Joy's room is covered with wall-to-wall Dunkeld and family memorabilia. She certainly has made her presence felt in the SandBrook facility, and despite the serious handicap of not having her own kitchen, she frequently delivers cups of tea and pieces of cake (which she buys) to other residents. The management clearly is somewhat nonplussed by a resident with so much get-up-and-go. She is irrepressible! We spent a day and a bit with Joy, and were reassured that she is doing OK, even though there seems no doubt her heart is still in this part of the world. Anyone who wants to get in touch with Joy can do so in writing (Sandbrook, Room 57, 10 Executive Drive, Burleigh

Waters, Qld 4220); telephone (07 5593 5323); or e-mail, via the website

(http://mckenzieacg.com/). Within this website, click on "send a message to a resident", and use the on-line form, being careful to select "Sandbrook" as the facility. Any message received will be printed out and delivered to Joy - but don't expect her to reply using this method!

After visiting Joy, we continued north as far as Noosaville, on the Sunshine Coast. Whilst the weather was far too hot for us, it was great to catch up with Pru and Georges Saimoun, who now run a very successful cafe, the Beans and Bagels Expresso Bar, just opposite the Noosa River in Noosaville. We actually preferred Noosaville to its rather more glitzy neighbour, Noosa Heads. Pru and Georges have recently moved house, just five minutes away from their cafe, and they seem to be enjoying life despite working very hard. The cafe is clearly very popular with the locals, and as would be

expected of Chef Georges, the food is great as well as the coffee. We enjoyed a most delicious breakfast there one morning. Pru and Georges would obviously be pleased to welcome any Dunkeldians who happen to visit the Noosa area. EUROPEAN WASPS It’s that time of year again - when queen wasps emerge from hibernation and look for sites to build their nests. A number of local farmers have reported an increase in wasp sightings, especially under wood piles. So it could be a sign of a bad wasp year. Now is the time to act! If you find a large European wasp, safely destroy it, as one queen has the potential to raise 1000’s of wasps. It’ll save a lot of discomfort later on “Grampians Ark” and “Grampians To Grasslands”

‘Remember this November’ and purchase a poppy from Dunkeld RSL Sub-Branch members – the money raised is used to assist both current and former serving members of the Australian and Allied defence forces and their dependents when in need. For more information please visit: http://www.anzacappeal.com.au/ Thousands of Poppy Appeal volunteers around the state will be encouraging Victorians to embrace the notion of mateship by purchasing a poppy for themselves and one for a mate. The message forms part of a larger campaign to educate and inform Victorians about the importance of the Poppy Appeal and its relevance today. As a wave of young veterans are finding themselves and their families in need of assistance, it is now as important as ever to donate to the Poppy Appeal, said RSL Appeals Manager, Peter Smith. Mr Smith believes that buying an iconic red Poppy for yourself and one for a mate is a powerful way to bring all Victorians together as one to remember our fallen heroes. The Poppy Appeal is a cause that resonates with all Australians, and we hope that each and every person who purchases a poppy feels a great sense of pride in wearing one and passing one on to a mate,” said RSL Appeals Manager, Peter Smith. Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards. A minute of silence is dedicated to the deceased, especially for soldiers who died fighting to protect our nation. Plant Your Poppy: Plant Your Poppy is an initiative of the

Victorian RSL's Poppy Appeal. It is an online virtual garden where you can creatively share your stories, thoughts and ideas on Remembrance Day and what it means to you. Planting is simple! Just choose your spot, write a message and watch the poppy garden grow! Your poppy can be anything you want it to be; a memory, photo, picture, poem or simply a 'Lest We Forget.' FROM THE LIONS DEN Well Dunkeld did it again this last weekend, the weather was great, the town looked good and the crowds came. Well done to the organisers and any of the people that assisted. The Lions manned the BBQ at the Arboretum for the finish of the bicycle ride and Open Day at the

saw mill. It was an honour to be able to assist and once again congratulations. Quiet is not always best As most of you would be aware there have been renovations being carried out on the toilet block at the Catholic Church. We had the official opening of the new block last Sunday and Andy and Keryn Gordon had the honour of doing the first official flushes. During the renovations Andy went into Hamilton to get some things needed for the work. One of the things needed was a new exhaust fan. He went to the store and the clerk looked up the details on the computer and recommended one fan in particular because it was exceptionally quiet. When he said the price Andy looked at him and said, ‘Do you have anything louder’? Well done Andy and the other workers for a job well done. Peter Hinchey

GARDEN NOTES - OCTOBER October is an excellent time to plant summer vegetables. Home grown vegetables are fresher, cheaper and give a great sense of satisfaction to the grower. An open sunny position is required also good drainage, an adequate supply of good quality water and soil of reasonable texture and fertility (although these last two can be improved with the use of compost or well decayed animal manure). Main plantings include climbing and dwarf beans, beetroot, capsicum, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, melons, parsnip, pumpkin, squash, raddish, silver beet, sweet corn, tomato, zucchini and most herbs. Talk to your nurseryman about any special needs for these crops. Aphids (small green insects clustered on new rose shoots) can appear in spring and can soon spoil rose flowers by sucking sap from new flowering buds. These pests can be removed by simply rubbing them from the shoots if there are only a few. Larger numbers can be controlled with the use of insecticides such as pyrethrum, Condifor ®, Maurik ®, Malathon ® or any of the soap based sprays. Flowering annuals are useful both in the garden and in pots to add splashes of colour to your garden. Annuals in pots are useful as they can be moved to different areas of the garden to brighten up various areas. If planting into pots, make sure that you use a premium potting mix – one that meets or exceeds Australasian Standard 3743. For open ground planting, soil preparation is important, well cultivated and compost or well rotted manure mixed through. Annuals grow quickly therefore extra feeding during the growing period will usually be needed. If your soil is not deep, raising the area by 10-15cm will give the root more room to develop as well as improving drainage. Water well before and after planting. Plant at the same depth as in the punnet, regular watering is necessary until plants are established. Slugs and snails can be a problem with young plants, make sure that you keep weeds under control and use a snail bait if necessary. Main spring annual plantings are aster, begonia, marigold, carnation, petunia, lobelia, salvia and many more. Happy Gardening Stephen Hughan
