Moving On I started at Bonalbo Central School as Relieving Principal at the start of 2013 and then was lucky enough to be appointed permanently at the start of 2014. I’ve enjoyed every minute of being Principal of this fantas c school and I will always remember the warm welcome I received from the students and all the hard work the staff put into giving them the very best educa on they can give them. It’s with a good deal of sadness that I pass on the news that I was recently no fied that as of the start of the 2017 school year I will be Principal at Nimbin Central School. I approach this change with a fair mix of emo ons because, while it will allow me to move to be nearer my family, I’m going to miss Bonalbo a great deal and I feel that there are quite a few things I have yet to do here. I suppose that there are always tasks le to do, no ma er how long we are in a par cular role. So, that I have things le to do in Bonalbo, comes as no real surprise. What does come as a surprise is just how fast the past four years has flown by. It seems hardly any me at all that I was told I’d be spending 2013 in Bonalbo and here I am wri ng to inform parents that my me here has come to an end. I’ll be saying a bit more about the school, the students and staff at Bonalbo at a range of different events over the next few weeks. If you feel like dropping in for a chat then please feel free to do so: I always try to make me for parents and carers. There are plans in place to find a replacement principal and the process will take place hopefully this year to allow the new person to start at the commencement of Term 1, 2017. Mrs Moore will be in the school as relieving Deputy Principal to provide some con nuity and to fill in as Relieving Principal if this is required. I feel I’m leaving the school in very capable hands. Story Slam During our slightly delayed Book Week Celebra ons in Week 6 of Term 4 we are holding a Story Slam where students and members of
staff will be encouraged to get up in front of an audience and tell a story about the topic of ‘Friends or Friendship’. We’re asking possible par cipants to prepare a story that runs around two to three minutes but it must be delivered as a spoken story, this is not a wri ng exercise. Notes held in the hand will be permi ed. The stories should be entertaining, centred on the topic and have a hook or twist at the end. We would be interested in hearing from any parent or carer who would be interested in par cipa ng in the Story Slam. We need people to register by providing their name to Mrs Mar n or I by October 28th as no spontaneous stories from someone who wants to just jump up and par cipate will be allowed. There will only be a limited number of spots available so get in fast and all material must be suitable for an audience of children down to an age of 9 years. The Story Slam will be held in Week 6, Tuesday 15th November. Mr Trevor Hodges Principal
Welcome back to Term 4 and the dates are filling up fast! Last term students performed at the Performing Arts Festival in Casino. Students in K-Year 2 performed a dance ensemble, while Years 3-6 performed a ukulele and singing piece. Thank you to all parents and carers who came to the event and supported their children by attending. The festival is always a big event, and takes lots of time and practice that is well worth the effort on the night when we see our students perform in front of such a large audience. Special mention must be made of the Casino RSM who donated the cost/use of their room to Bonalbo Central School students to rest and get ready in, and who subsidised the cost of dinner by half. Thank you! On Tuesday 18th October, students in the Primary participated in Food Literacy Workshops, courtesy of the Red Cross, promoting healthy eating choices. Students made fruit smoothies and discussed the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. These were run by Kerry Gibson of the Red Cross, who also presented the school with a Brevi Blender for the Breakfast Club.

Last Friday 21st October, students were visited by Rural Fire Service volunteers and the big truck. They spoke to the children about fire safety and the important role of volunteers and the Fire Service. Students were able to see how the fire truck works and learn about safety in a fun and engaging way. Thank you to Mrs Taikakara for organising the visit. Year 2/3 will be going to the Coffs Coast Adventure School on the 1st and 2nd of November. Last Saturday we held a fundraiser outside the Bonalbo Newsagency to support this exciting trip. Thank you to the P & C who donated the sausages and the use of the BBQ, and to Bob at the Newsagency who donated the bread. A very special thank you to all parents and students who assisted on the day, and to those who helped by providing baked goodies to sell. Without all the wonderful cooking and produce, we would not have made so much money to go towards the excursion; over $900 was raised! A reminder to everyone that as the weather warms up students are taking their jumpers off early in the day. Please make sure student’s names are written inside so we can return them when lost. We are also encouraging students to drink plenty of water, so please pack a drink
bottle with water for your children. Have a wonderful term! Primary Staff
Agriculture News This term we welcome Ma Hogan as the new Ag Assistant. We look forward to working with him. Razi has moved away a er many years of service to Agriculture at Bonalbo Central. Thank you to Razi and good luck in the future. Zac, Taylah and Jack competed in the Lismore Show Led Steer compe on last week. They presented and cared for their steers very well.
They all led in the ring either during the compe on or auc on. The school steer
“Nugget” came 5th in the School Led Steer class and then 4th overall in the School Carcase compe on, winning a ribbon!! Layton also a ended the show with his own steer and did very well
when he joined with other steers to win the pen of 3. Special thanks to Shaun and Darryl from Armfield’s Transport for trucking our steers to the show. Thank you also to Chris Whitney for clipping them prior to the show.

No ce to Parents – Rewards Excursion The K‐11 Rewards Excursion is coming up at the end of Term 4, 2016. As this is a rewards excursion, students are only eligible if they have displayed a sa sfactory level of behaviour at school prior to the excursion. Furthermore, if a student has been suspended from school during Term 4, or if the Principal feels that the behaviour displayed by any student has been unsa sfactory (in spite of having the required merit awards) then this invita on can be withheld. Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Alert There have recently been confirmed cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in and around the Casino area. Whooping cough caught at school can spread to any other members at home. Coughing spreads the infec on to others nearby. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies. Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infec on may also occur in fully‐vaccinated children. What should people sick with pertussis do? Pertussis is readily spread from an infected person to others by coughing and sneezing. If le untreated, it can be spread for up to three (3) weeks a er the start of the infected person’s cough. Do not a end work, school or a childcare facility if you or any household members: Have a cough as described above. Please
see your doctor. Are being tested for whooping cough by
your doctor and wai ng for test results. Are being treated with an bio cs for
whooping cough for at least five (5) days a er star ng the
medicine
Keep coughing children away from babies. Whooping cough vaccines give good protec on against infec on but immunity fades. If your school‐aged child has younger siblings, it’s a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines.
