________________________________________________________________________________________ Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Carers, Enrichment Showcases Yesterday the students in Years K-4 who have been involved in our Enrichment Program this year presented their projects at our showcase. It was wonderful to see their creativity, innovation and enthusiasm evident in the work they had produced. Thank you to the parents and visitors who attended the showcase. This opportunity for the students to share their work and receive feedback is a critical aspect of project-based learning. Thank you to Ms Spender who has done an amazing job with the Enrichment Program throughout the year. We look forward to seeing the Stage 3 projects at their showcase next week.

Staff Appreciation Dinner We had a great evening on Friday at Magpies Waitara for the Staff Appreciation Dinner. Thank you to all of the parents who attended to recognise the dedication of our staff. As I said on the night, the staff has an intrinsic motivation to do our best for our students and we do not expect acknowledgement. However, when parents make the effort to offer kind words or send a positive email it means a lot to us. Special thanks to the P & C for coordinating Friday’s event and particularly Bonita Chan, Melissa Logan and Andrew Veldon, as their thorough organisation made it such an enjoyable evening. P & C AGM On Monday night the Annual General Meeting of our P & C was held and a new Committee was elected. It is fantastic to have many people continuing on in their roles next year and we are also pleased to welcome some new members. Thank you to everyone who nominated themselves for a position. Thank you to the outgoing Committee for their work throughout the year. The P & C has worked so effectively to support our school over the last couple of years and we look forward to continuing this partnership in 2020. Staff Professional Learning on Aboriginal Education Last week our staff participated in a professional learning session with Dave Lardner, Aboriginal Education and Engagement Officer. He spoke about the Department of Education’s Aboriginal Education Policy and ways to integrate Aboriginal perspectives effectively in teaching and learning programs. 2020 Planning This term we are planning for 2020 classes. To assist in this process, it is most helpful if we have accurate student numbers. If your child will not be returning to Normanhurst Public School in 2020, please send written advice of this to me as soon as possible.
If you have particular information related to your child’s 2020 placement of which you feel we need to be aware, please put this in writing (letter or email) addressed to myself and ensure I receive it prior to Friday 22 November at the absolute latest. Please note that changes will not be made after classes are formed so if you have any information you wish to be considered we need to be advised of it now. If you have submitted such requests in the past, you will need to re-submit these for 2020. It is also important that the information is received in writing and directed to me, as verbal requests to class teachers will not be considered.
Please note, this is not a process to request specific teachers. Assumptions should also not be made that teachers will necessarily be teaching the same year level in 2020 as they have previously. All of our teachers are qualified to teach K-6 and allocations are made based on preferences teachers submit to me and the overall effective operation of the school.
The written requests we do receive prior to the deadline will be considered when forming classes for next year. However, in the context of many factors needing to be addressed, we cannot necessarily meet all requests.
Selective High School Applications Please be reminded that all applications for Selective High School must be completed by Monday 11 November. No late applications can be accepted. The online application can be accessed at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. Please also remember to return the note indicating that you intend to apply so that school assessment scores can be prepared. Positive Behaviour for Learning During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for after school and how our three school values relate to waiting at the drop-off / pick-up area, bus area or riding or walking home. The Week 2 recipients of our PBL draw were Joanna C and Tom C.

On Wednesday 23 October 2019 Normanhurst Public School were thoroughly entertained by the fantastic Japanese drumming group Taikoz from Musica Viva. This dynamic and heart-stopping traditional Japanese taiko drumming show had our students enthralled. Our students literally became sounding boards, vibrating along with the explosive energy coming from the stage.

On Thursday 7 November at 6.30 p.m. – 7.30 p.m in the school library the NPS Band program will be hosting a short info night about how fantastic the NPS Band program is! You are all welcome to attend, and attendance does not mean you have joined the program. However, it is a great way to understand the involvement of the band and the fabulousness of it!! ______________________________________________________________________________________ P&C News What a wonderful evening we had on Friday night to celebrate World Teachers Day at our Staff Appreciation Cocktail evening. Thank you to all of the teachers and parents who attended to make it a special occasion. Last night we held our annual P&C AGM and general meeting to follow. We welcome Elly C to our Secretary role, and sadly saw Pam G and Uldouz V step down from their roles. Our Fundraising Coordinator role is still vacant, and we will be taking expressions of interest for individual or groups of parents to host individual events over our next calendar year. Please be in touch if you are interested in coordinating an event such as our Mother’s Day stall, Father’s Day Breakfast, Trivia Night etc. We welcome new ideas and people to this role. Our Carols night is only a few weeks away, so keep an eye out for a roster in next week’s newsletter. It will be a whole school effort to run our fundraisers which provide essential monies for the nice-to-have items that are in our school for the benefit of all our children. Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program https://sport.nsw.gov.au/ourwork/women-in-sport/daughters-and-dads-active-and-empowered-program
Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program is an award-winning evidence-based initiative, proven to enhance the physical and social-emotional well-being of girls, developed by the University of Newcastle, Australia.
The program is for dads and their primary school-aged daughter(s) (K-6) and focuses on empowering young girls and improving girls’ fundamental movement skills through fun activities and one-on-one time with their dad.
So, if you’re a dad who wants to spend quality time with your daughter participating in fun physical activities, whilst learning how to improve her sport skills, confidence, self-esteem and resilience, book into a program.
Program information The program involves a mix of both theory-based education sessions and fun practical activities.
Education sessions For dads, the education sessions focus on proven parenting strategies to improve their daughters’ social-emotional well-being, sports skills and physical activity levels. Dads learn the unique and powerful influence they have on their daughter and parenting strategies to encourage gender equity. Daughters walk away feeling empowered with improved sport skills, confidence and self-esteem.
The daughters’ education sessions focus on developing key social and emotional skills including:
• Self-control • Persistence • Critical thinking • Resilience • Self-reliance
Daughters learn how to design physical activity sessions at home and become ‘personal trainers’ to motivate their dad to stay active.
Practical sessions The practical sessions focus on rough and tumble play, fitness and sport skills. Fundamental movement skills are the building blocks required to participate in most forms of physical activity.
The program focusses on foundations skills necessary for a range of sporting activities including:
• Kicking • Catching • Bouncing • Striking and throwing
Research shows that children who are proficient in these fundamental movement skills are more likely to be active, fit and have higher levels of physical self-esteem throughout adolescence and adulthood.
The Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program can accommodate any girl and a significant male figure in their lives. This might be a grandfather, uncle, older brother or trusted family friend. The program was designed to use male role models as agents of change, improving the physical activity levels, sport skills and social-emotional wellbeing of young girls.
