Term 03 Week 10 Healthy Ways for kids to manage their emoons Many of us struggle to effecvely manage our emoons, even as adults. We tend to default to behaviours such as avoidance, denial and worry when those tough emoons rise to the surface. Michael Grose, one of Australia’s leading parent educators suggests seven healthy ways to manage our own emoons, and highly recommends that we also pass these on to our children: Breathe deeply . Use relaxaon exercises. Use a posive reappraisal… change the way you view something and you’ll be beer able to manage your emoonal response. Use posive, realisc self-talk… replace negave thoughts with something more posive. Exercise… releases endorphins, nature’s feel-good chemical, which will move your mood to a beer space. Distract yourself… phone a friend, read a good book, watch a comedy Have construcve habits and hobbies… all work and no play is a recipe for disaster. It’s important that as parents, carers and teachers, we learn to pracce good emoonal management ourselves so that we are beer able to help our children manage their emoons. Term 03 Week 10

Healthy Ways for kids to manage their emotions

Many of us struggle to effectively manage our emotions, even as adults. We tend to

default to behaviours such as avoidance, denial and worry when those tough

emotions rise to the surface. Michael Grose, one of Australia’s leading parent

educators suggests seven healthy ways to manage our own emotions, and highly

recommends that we also pass these on to our children:

Breathe deeply .

Use relaxation exercises.

Use a positive reappraisal… change the way you view something and you’ll be

better able to manage your emotional response.

Use positive, realistic self-talk… replace negative thoughts with something more

positive.

Exercise… releases endorphins, nature’s feel-good chemical, which will move

your mood to a better space.

Distract yourself… phone a friend, read a good book, watch a comedy

Have constructive habits and hobbies… all work and no play is a recipe for

disaster.

It’s important that as parents, carers and teachers, we learn to practice good

emotional management ourselves so that we are better able to help our children

manage their emotions.

Farewell Mr. Lesleighter

Mr Gary Lesleighter has accepted an IT job in the health industry in Brisbane and will be

finishing up at Saint Mary’s this week. This is a great opportunity for Mr Lesleighter and we

wish him all the best. I would like to sincerely thank him for all his work during his time here at

Saint Mary’s. I know he will be greatly missed.

As the term draws to a close…

Term 3 is traditionally the busiest time of year in schools, and the upcoming holiday break is

especially well deserved. Please travel safely if you are going away over the coming two weeks.

Relish the break from the school routine and enjoy the company of your children. We

will look forward to seeing you all again for the beginning of Term 4.

God Bless

Angela Myles

Principal

***Reminder – String Immersion every Thursday*** A Term Full of Music Opportunities Ahead! As the end of the year approaches, it is time to get our diaries out and mark in some important College music dates. It is a busy time, but such a great opportunity to teach our children the life skills needed to be organised and prepared. Term 4 includes events that celebrate our achievements throughout the year, including our “Spring Concert” for students learning music with our team of Music Tutors, and the annual Celebration of the Arts. I will include specific dates and times in next term’s edition of the newsletter. A Music Event for Non-Musicians! My dear friend, Mrs Samantha Cook, is bringing her handbells ensemble, “Brisbane Bells”, to the College on Tuesday 26 September. As well as a 5pm concert of beautiful other-worldly music, the ensemble will be holding a hands-on workshop at 3pm. If you have always wanted to do something musical, but have never had the opportunity, this workshop is for you. In a handbell ensemble, you are responsible for the playing of ONLY ONE NOTE, which is manageable by anyone! Concert tickets are $20/$10 and the workshop is only $15. Tickets are available for purchase at www.brisbanebells.com Wondai Art Gallery Opening Night I have been contacted by the Wondai Art Gallery convenor, who has invited our students to perform at this special event. Any students who would like to perform at this event should contact me before Friday. Please note, this is not an official College event; I will pass on the information to students who can contact the Art Gallery directly for further information. Thank you to parents, carers, students and staff for your support of our Music Program this term. Have a safe and restful holiday! Yours in Music, Mrs Jane Iszlaub Music Coordinator

Year 7 and 8 Mathematics Challenge

In Week 9 a group of students from both Year 7 and 8 competed in the Mathematics Challenge, an annual event held

at Kingaroy High School. The event consisted of a series of rounds requiring students to use mental arithmetic and

problem-solving skills, with our school competing against teams from Kingaroy State High School and Nanango State

School. The students represented our College in an exceptional manner and achieved the following results:

Year 7 Teams

First Place - Lawson Green, Luca Lazzaroni and Samuel Piper Third Place - Emma Kleinhauss, Teagan O'Sullivan and Hanne Steenkamp Year 8 Teams Second Place - Isaac Kelly, James Olbes and Jacob Sutton Fourth Place - Josee Currin, Kayla Peters and Bridget Reeve

Congratulations to these students for their wonderful effort!

On Monday in the last week of term 3, all the year 8's went on a science excursion to the Meandu Coal Mine. Geology and Mining is the unit for next term so this trip provided a great introduction to the new topic. The students were kitted out in their safety gear and drove in the bus around the whole mine. They saw the many huge machines in operation and learned about all the steps and processes in coal mining. A much better appreciation

was also gained for the economical and environmental considerations of every mining operation.

Kind regards

Mr Ronald Johnston

Science Teacher

There is no homework club this week, Thursday 14 September. Homework club will resume week 2 of term 4 on Thursday 5 October 2017. Kind regards Ms Sonia Robertson Homework Club Coordinator

Term 4 Fees Term 4 Fee Statements will be issued in the first week of Term 4 and will be due for payment in full by Friday 20th October unless you have a formal payment arrangement in place with the College. If you are having any difficulty in paying your account, we encourage you to contact us sooner rather than later to discuss a payment arrangement and how the College may be able to assist you. The College’s preference is always to handle debt matters internally and directly with our families to avoid further unnecessary fee follow up procedures. If you have any concerns, please contact Briony Hoare, Finance Secretary in the College office. Rock On Stage DVDs If you ordered a Rock on Stage DVD, please collect from the office. Kind regards Ms Kym Schultz Business Manager

In early September a merry band of mothers ran the Father’s Day stall at school: Shelly Boughen, Abby Anderson, Amanda Hetherington, Karen Garner, Cath Pomerenke and Rebecca Lyon. Thank you.

Facebook Group P & F engagement at Saint Mary’s Catholic College (Offical) is a new facebook group for parents, carers and teachers of students at SMCC.
