WHAT IS TERMITE PROOFING MATERIAL

In building construction, various wooden materials are used.

These have tendency to be attacked by termites over a period of time.

Hence, in order to prevent decay of materials termite proofing is required.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMITES AND METHODS OF CONTROLLING THEM

1. SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES They require contact with soil. They are mainly responsible for damaging

buildings. They build nest in a form of colony and

their growth is very fast.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMITES AND METHODS OF CONTROLLING THEM Methods of controlling subterranean termites:-

Termiticides: They are applied on the wood directly. They are applied on foundations of homes.

Bait Devices: They are mainly used when it is not feasible to

apply Termiticides. They are mostly used near wells and water sources.

Additional Termite Control Techniques: Less common termite control method heat

treatment, extreme cold and electronic termite control.ds include heat treatment, extreme cold and electronic termite control.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMITES AND METHODS OF CONTROLLING THEM2. DRYWOOD TERMITES They do not require contact with

soil. They typically live in hardwood,

wooden floorings, etc. They cause damage at a slower

rate than subterranean termites.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMITES AND METHODS OF CONTROLLING THEM Methods of controlling drywood termites:-

Wood treatment: When a drywood termite colony is limited, a

direct wood treatment can be effective. For this treatment, a pest control expert

applies a liquid insecticide to the surface of the wood.

Structural Fumigation: It is used when a termite attack includes

multiple colonies in and around a home. In this process, a gas is pumped which

penetrates through all cracks where termites are present.

OTHER METHODS OF TERMITE CONTROL IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION1. Pre-construction Treatment: It is done in the

initial stage of construction of building. It is divided into three operations as following:

Soil preparation Soil treatment Structural barriers.

2. Post-construction Treatment: For this operation, a pressure pump will be required for proper penetration of chemicals into the surface to be treated. This is divided into following operations:

Treatment of foundation Treatment of soil under floors Treatment of masonry at plinth level.

Post-construction Treatment

CONCLUSION Each year, termites and similar pests cause an estimated Rs. 3000 crore

in damage to man-made structures in India. Hence, termites have been causing huge damage to personal as well as

public property. With the help of termite proofing materials, growth of the termites can

be stopped hence the structural damage of the building can be prevented.
