CATN HOA JULY MEETING REPORT
The July regular monthly meeting of the Civic Association of Terra Nova (CATN) was held on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. The Directors had a very full agenda, which opened with the security report. Director Heaton, reporting on behalf of Deputy Sam Orta, who could not attend the meeting, relayed an account of a suspicious individual, who appeared to be checking houses for unlocked doors and looking into the beds of trucks that had tool boxes. Residents are reminded to keep their doors locked, even when they are at home, and to remove all personal belongings and lock all doors when exiting their vehicles.
Director Breed (Clubhouse) reported that MoreHands Maid Service had been contracted to clean the clubhouse. Service will be provided on a weekly basis through September, and then every other week from October – March. Bids for clubhouse repairs (plumbing, roofing, windows, electrical, and HVAC) are in progress. She noted that once the bids are obtained, a prioritized list would be generated. The Board also discussed a problem with the AC, which may be due to a faulty breaker. Coastal Electric will be contacted to check the breaker and assess whether the breaker box meets current code.
Director Cariss (Recreation) reported that a recent inspection of the pool by Hayes Utilities revealed that the pool backflow preventer is not in compliance with current code. Although the backflow
preventer is functional, it cannot be grandfathered into current code and therefore must be replaced as soon as possible. Hayes Utilities will replace the backflow preventer and bill the HOA. In addition, the Board approved repair of the metal plates at the base of the waterslide, which are rusting and coming loose. The waterslide repair will be done after the pool closes for the season. Lastly, Director Cariss reported that pool usage is way up from last year, and there have been many compliments on the new pool decking.
The Directors noted that although there are still homeowners in violation of the garbage/recycling deed restriction, many are complying with the request to bring in their bins after trash pick-up. Of special note, the residents of the 5300 block of Summerfield Lane pulled in their trash/recycling bins. For their efforts, each household will receive a gift card to Sonic. Several of the other deed restriction problems, e.g., cars parked on lawns and cars with expired registration stickers, have been resolved.
Treasurer Newman reported that the HOA fees are 90% collected for 2014. He also noted that although the Board has been over monthly allowances, due to pool and playground maintenance expenditures, the Board is still within the overall amount budgeted for 2014. In order to ensure that the Board remains within budget for the year, the Directors reduced the minimum dollar amount of expenditures requiring board approval from $500 to $250.
The first draft of revised bylaws is completed. The Directors will review the draft and return corrections within the next week, so that a second draft can be drawn up by the August meeting.
Disclaimer: The reports given above are NOT a record of minutes for the CATN meetings. The official minutes can be obtained from Andy Armstrong ([email protected]) once they have been approved by the Board of Directors.
The next regular monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 7:30p.m. All residents are encouraged to attend.

Terra Nova July Fourth Parade & Celebration
Terra Nova residents celebrated the 4th in a big way. At least 50 residents and a few dogs walked in the parade. This year, in addition to the Klein Volunteer Fire Department truck, we had Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross leading the parade in a 1966 convertible mustang. After the parade approximately 200 people attended the party at the pool. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and ice cream were served. A wonderful time was had by all! A big round of thanks to Pam Mars and all the volunteers, who made this year’s celebration such a HUGE success.

The Recipe BoxSusan Tsujimoto, Editor
During the Dog Days of Summer nothing is more refreshing that a cool sparkling drink. My favorite is Sonic Drive-In’s Cherry Limeade. While I still go to Sonic to get the real deal (half-price from 2-4!), this copy-cat recipe comes pretty close.
Copy-cat Cherry Limeade
Preparation
1. Fill a 16-ounce glass 2/3 full with ice.2. Pour Sprite over the ice.3. Add the juice of three lime wedges and drop them
into the drink.4. Add the cherry juice5.Mix together with a straw and top with a
maraschino cherry.
* Libby’s Juicy Juice 100% Cherry, Ocean Spray Cherry or Torani Cherry Lime Syrup (use only one lime wedge if using cherry lime syrup)
Ingredients
• 12 ounces Sprite• 3 lime wedges (1/8 of a
lime each)
