You should know exactly what I’m talking about. And if you don’t, well, you’ve flunked Movie Biology 101 for ever more. Come on now. You must have noticed a certain physical dissimilarity between the headstrong young Po (voiced by Jack Black) and his wise old dad Mr Ping (James Hong). A lard-carrying panda the son of a card-carrying goose? And no explanation throughout the first film as to how this can possibly be? Moving to right this wrong, the makers of Kung Fu Panda 2 get right down to origin-story-business from the opening scenes. It is here we learn that Po’s real ma and pa were the victims of a China-wide purge of pandas ordered by the psychotic warmongering peacock Lord Shen (Gary Oldman). Shen is none too pleased when he learns that Po survived the cull. Particularly as it was once prophesied a panda would one day prove his undoing. And so, Po and his merry band of martial arts masters, the Furious Five — still spearheaded by Tigress (Angelina Jolie) and Monkey (Jackie Chan) — are placed on a collision course with dark forces allied to the villainous Lord Shen. Getting the better of this bad dude will not be easy because Shen has developed a monster cannon that overpowers the magic of kung fu, first time, every time. To properly assess the merits of Kung Fu Panda 2, you must compare it with two other films. The first, of course, is the original, alongside which No.2 stacks up very well indeed. The story is a solid refinement of the best bits from before, and the balance between light humour and darker drama is quite well maintained. Second, if you put it head-to-head with the other animated sequel hitting cinemas this week, you would have to say the slick Cars 2 is beaten to the chequered flag by the burly panda. Kung Fu Panda 2 has a better plot, superior vocal performances (yes, that even includes Jean- Claude van Damme as a kooky crocodile) and gives off a little bit of soul that its rival does not. Kung Fu Panda 2 is rated PG and can be seen at the Alice Springs Cinema. Jed said his appreciation for all types of music made him very happy to be DJ-ing at the Juicy Rump. He said: ‘‘I worked in a mar- keting and promotion company for a couple of years when I was living in Adelaide and I knew a little bit about DJ-ing. ‘‘When I moved to Alice Springs, I didn’t really know a whole lot of people and I saw the Juicy Rump had an opening so I applied for it. ‘‘I love all sorts of music, so I have a great time playing the Top 40 stuff. Don’t get me wrong though, because I’d love to be playing Jimmy Barnes or Guns’n’Roses as well. ‘‘Doing this job has actually inspired me to do more DJ-ing, but it’s just a matter of getting the time to do it because I work six nights every week.’’ Jed said he would like to host an R’n’B night in the future. ‘‘For the most part I just keep it fairly simple. It just depends on how organised I can get.’’ DJ Jed will be playing at the Juicy Rump on Friday and Sat- urday night from 10pm. A fable, folk-tale film Cameron Boon PART fable, part folk- tale and part real-life, the Araluen film of the week is a 2009 film about a hermit by the name of Felix Bush. Set in early 1930s Tennessee, Felix (played by Robert Duvall) has no regard for anybody in the town nor anyone who wants to get to know him. But one day, after an old fellow hermit dies and he hears people in town telling stories about him, Felix de- cides he needs to tell his own stories while there’s somebody there to listen. And there’s one story in particular that Felix needs to reveal and it’s a secret that has haunted him for 40 years. Revealing that secret will mean the entire town will have to re-evaluate its prejudices and as- sumptions about this tortured soul. He decides the best way to do this would be to hold his own wake — while he’s still alive. The job of arranging the early wake falls to Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) the local fu- neral director and his only employee Buddy. Felix’s big bad secret involves Mattie (Sissy Spacek) who has just returned to town. Sissy the role of the old woman with relish. Felix has to try and tell the story to the crowd but doesn’t know if he can do it. Get Low stars Robert Duvall (The Godfather I and II, Apocalypse Now, Crazy Heart) Bill Mur- ray (Lost in Trans- lation, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters I, II, III) and Sissy Spacek (Big Love, Coal Miner’s Daughter, Carrie). See it at Araluen at 7pm this Sunday.

Angelina Jolie stars inKung Fu Panda 2

AS fun as the 2008 animated hit Kung Fu Pandaturned out to be, there was always a grey areaconcerning the movie’s black-and-white hero.

You should know exactly what I’m talking about.

And if you don’t, well, you’ve flunked MovieBiology 101 for ever more.

Come on now. You must have noticed a certainphysical dissimilarity between the headstrongyoung Po (voiced by Jack Black) and his wise olddad Mr Ping (James Hong).

A lard-carrying panda the son of a card-carryinggoose? And no explanation throughout the firstfilm as to how this can possibly be?

Moving to right this wrong, the makers of KungFu Panda 2 get right down to origin-story-businessfrom the opening scenes.

It is here we learn that Po’s real ma and pa werethe victims of a China-wide purge of pandasordered by the psychotic warmongering peacockLord Shen (Gary Oldman).

Shen is none too pleased when he learns that Posurvived the cull.

Particularly as it was once prophesied a pandawould one day prove his undoing.

And so, Po and his merry band of martial artsmasters, the Furious Five — still spearheaded byTigress (Angelina Jolie) and Monkey (JackieChan) — are placed ona collision course withdark forces allied tothe villainous LordShen.
