No matter your industry, operating more efficiently can save money and help boost business.

That’s what happened at Terumo BCT, a global leader in blood component, therapeutic apheresis and cellular technologies. It’s the only company with the unique combination of apheresis collections, manual and automated whole blood processing, and pathogen reduction coupled with leading technologies in therapeutic apheresis and cell processing. The company has more than 5,300 associates worldwide, and it’s the largest independent employer in Lakewood with more than 2,000 people working at its global headquarters campus.

“We have a corporate goal to incorporate energy efficiency into our operations,” said Chris Sirbin, Building Operations Manager. “We are always looking to reduce energy costs, and, since we’re global, we really try to minimize our footprint in our manufacturing process.”

Getting startedXcel Energy account manager Darryl Presley reached out and proposed that Sirbin and his team consider participating in Xcel Energy’s Process Efficiency program.

“They were interested and aggressive from the start,” said Presley. “We started by benchmarking their energy use so we could determine the best ways to save.”

The Process Efficiency program is a great way for large business customers to determine energy savings opportunities through a consultant supported three phased approach designed to encourage long-term strategic energy management (SEM) across an organization. The three customizable phases of the program include:

• Phase 1 – Identify opportunities: a no-cost, one-day energy management session evaluates energy-intensive processes and benchmarks energy management practices; identifies energy-saving technical opportunities; and reviews a follow-up assessment report outlining high- priority action items

• Phase 2 – Develop an energy action plan: the proposal outlines engineering and technical studies to determine energy-saving opportunities. Xcel Energy funds 75% of the cost of the study with a customer contribution cap of $7,500

• Phase 3 – Implement improvements and qualify for rebates: improvements are planned, a timeline is set for installation, and the account manager helps the customer apply for rebates. Additional bonuses are available of up to 30% for optimizing systems or for exceeding annual energy goals.

“They were a great candidate for this approach, not only because they operate 24 hours a day Monday through Friday, but also because of their varying energy needs within different facilities throughout the campus” said Presley.

As a company running unique equipment around the clock for their highly-specialized operations, Terumo BCT has substantial needs for power quality and voltage conditioning. As a result, they installed an elaborate power-monitoring network 10 years ago with more than 150 connected meters and software throughout their Lakewood campus.

The software provides up-to-the-minute data on energy usage and quality, as well as long-term trends. The monitoring system has allowed managers to set energy usage benchmarks within each facility, adjust systems and processes and track possible savings.

Small steps to big savingsSirbin and his team are now in phase 3 of the Process Efficiency program, tackling low-hanging fruit like more efficient lighting and motor upgrades on much of their HVAC and pumping equipment.

“Xcel Energy gives me estimated savings for planned projects so I can present them to stakeholders,” said Sirbin. “Those numbers resonate strongly with company leadership and help me get approvals for funds and capital investments.”

Most recently, Terumo BCT’s new three-story, 120,000-square-foot global headquarters building at the Lakewood campus completed its final stages of construction after participating in Xcel Energy’s Energy Design Assistance (EDA) program. This program helps customers build with efficient and sustainable measures. Terumo BCT could save approximately $36,000 annually, or 340,000 kWh, from the implementation of Xcel Energy’s EDA program recommendations. As part of their participation in the EDA program, Terumo BCT will receive a one-time rebate of $55,000 to $69,000.

Worth the effortSince 2011, Sirbin’s team has completed 13 energy efficiency projects saving $51,000 annually, or 789,000 kWh. Xcel Energy has provided rebates of more than $86,000, or roughly one third of the total project costs.

In addition to the efficiency work, Terumo BCT also implemented two solar programs in 2010, saving an additional 255,000 kWh per year and earning another rebate of $260,000.

Next stepsTo help further manage energy use, Sirbin and his team are now using a single dashboard combining their enterprise building automation system and power monitoring system to identify all variables that affect energy use. Continuous real-time meter readings and the overlay dashboard allow Sirbin to monitor equipment energy use and site occupancy, identify significant energy users and know from where demand spikes come. Sirbin is better able to track both the impact of energy management practices and the subsequent cost savings.

“Our efficiency work is part of our continuous improvement as a provider of healthcare technologies and a member of the Lakewood community. A smaller environmental footprint translates to a big step forward in our operational efficiency and business continuity. I know we’ll participate in other efficiency projects, because of the benefits shown by our work with Xcel Energy,” said Sirbin.
