Objectives
By the end of this presentation, you should understand:•how to prepare staff and students for the Smarter Balanced Test;•the features offered by the Secure Browser and how to install it;•how to report security incidents;•how to maintain the security of testing materials and information;•what your students will experience when taking the Smarter Balanced Test; and•how to access and use the Test Administrator Interface.
Student ParticipationAll students enrolled in grades 3–8 and 11 are required to participate in the Smarter Balanced mathematics test except:•students with the most significant cognitive disabilities who meet the state’s criteria for a mathematics alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards (approximately one percent or less of the student population). All students enrolled in grades 3–8 and 11 are required to participate in the Smarter Balanced English language arts/literacy test except:•students with the most significant cognitive disabilities who meet the state’s criteria for the English language arts/literacy alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards (approximately one percent or less of the student population);•ELs who enrolled within the twelve months prior to the beginning of testing in a U.S. school have a one-time exemption. These students may instead participate in their state’s English language proficiency assessment consistent with state and federal policy.
Preparing for the Smarter Balanced Test• Notify School and District Test Coordinators, as well as
educators, students and parents about the test. • Notify IT staff that they should review the Technical
Specifications Manual and view the Technology Requirements for Online Testing training module.
• Participate in training opportunities. • Start determining testing schedules. • Compile information about needed student accessibility
resources. Refer to the Oregon Accessibility Manual (oaksportal.org), for more information.
• Consult the Test Administration Manual for information about specific policies and procedures related to training and preparation for the Smarter Balanced test (oaksportal.org).
Secure Browser• The Secure Browser prevents students from accessing other
computer or Internet applications and copying test information during testing. http://oaksportal.org/download-browsers/

Security Procedures
As a Test Administrator, you may be tasked with some or all of these activities:•maintaining a secure testing environment;•making sure printers are secure;•securing test materials and student information;•maintaining security of usernames and passwords; and•reporting potential test security incidents.
Additional information about security can be found in the Test Administration Manual
Test Security Incident Reporting
• Log potential incidents as soon as they are identified.• Submit the log according to your reporting processes.• Refer to the “Test Administration Manual” for details.
[States may wish to customize this slide with information about their security reporting procedures.]
Test PauseRules:•For performance tasks and for CAT assessments that have been paused for less than 20 minutes, students returning from a break in testing can revisit any items in the current test segment and change their answers if desired. •Students taking a CAT assessment who have paused their tests for longer than 20 minutes may only return to the most recently visited page containing unanswered test items in the current test segment. They may change any answers present on this page, but may not access any items on previous pages or in previous segments of the test. •If all items on the most recently visited page were answered prior to pausing, the student will resume the test on the next page with unanswered items, and will not be allowed to access previous pages or segments of the test.
Test TimeoutTest Timeout Due to Inactivity:•As a security measure, after 30 minutes of test inactivity, students are logged out and their tests are paused automatically.•Inactivity is determined by whether or not the student is interacting with the test by selecting answers or using navigation tools. Clicking an empty space on the screen is not considered activity.•Students will receive a warning message prior to being logged out, and must click OK on the popup within 30 seconds in order to avoid automatic logout and pausing of their tests.•If a student’s test is paused due to inactivity, the same rules apply as when the student intentionally pauses the test.
Denying Student Entry
Deny entry to a test session in these circumstances:•The student is not supposed to enter this session.•The student’s demographic information is incorrect•The student’s required accommodations are incorrect.
Troubleshooting
Description What to DoWhat should I do if a session ends? Log in and start a new session. Provide the
students with a new Session ID.
What should I do if a student gets logged out of a test while a session is still active?
If a student’s test session is interrupted, the student should log back in and rejoin the session.
What should I do if forbidden applications are running?
The Secure Browser will not allow the student to begin testing if forbidden applications are running. You will see messages advising you which applications must be closed before testing can begin.
What should I do if the computer freezes?
Force quit the Secure Browser and log back in. For instructions, refer to the Test Administration Manual.
