Go to www.smes.org and click on the Summer Session link under the Community tab to register. If you are paying with a credit card, please print one copy of your confirmation page for your records. If you are paying by check, please print two copies of your confirmation page, one for your records, and one to send in with payment within seven business days of registration. Make checks payable to St. Margaret's Episcopal School. Mail to: St. Margaret’s Episcopal School Attention: Business Office/Hillary Keyes, Summer Session Director 31641 La Novia San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675 A $100 deposit is required at the time of registration. Registration is first-come, first-served and will begin ONLINE on MARCH 21ST. * Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. All tuition must be paid in full within 7 business days of registration. If tuition is not received within that time, your child may be dropped from the class and his or her spot given away. The tuition, minus a $100 administrative fee, is refundable until June 3. After this date, the total is nonrefundable in cases of withdrawal. * Students not enrolled at St. Margaret’s during the regular school year are required to submit a medical release form. This form will be e-mailed to you attached to your registration confirmation. Please fill it out and mail to the address above, Attention: Nurses’ Office, immediately upon registering. * Grade level refers to the grade the student will be entering in fall 2011. Registration in a course above or below the recommended grade will be considered in special cases. Enrollment in credit courses is contingent upon approval of the instructor. Courses offered are subject to minimum enrollment. * An E-MAIL will be sent to you confirming your registration. Students who register for a course that is already filled will be placed on a waiting list, or can be switched into an open class. If an opening occurs, you will be notified; students who are placed on a waiting list do not require payment at the time of registration.

* We reserve the right to cancel classes that do not attract the minimum number of students. The decision to cancel classes will be made on June 20 for Upper School and 1 week prior to each session for Preschool, Lower School and Middle School sessions. Affected students may choose an alternative course or obtain a full refund of their tuition. Teacher assignments may be altered. TUITION FEES ∗ FOR PRESCHOOL, LOWER SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY: Tuition includes classroom materials as well

as supplies for hands-on courses and labs. If an additional materials fee is required, the tuition cost will reflect that increase.

∗ FOR UPPER SCHOOL ONLY: Tuition does not include textbooks. All Upper School textbooks will need to be ordered

HOMEWORK * The Upper School academic credit courses carry the expectation of three to four hours of assignment preparation between each class meeting. * The teacher determines homework, if any, in the Lower School and Middle School academic courses. STUDENT DRESS CODES * Students do not wear uniforms during the summer session. Dress is informal and students are expected to use good judgment in their choice of clothing. Girls may wear short-sleeved shirts/blouses, pants, skirts, shorts and summer dresses. Boys may wear T-shirts, pants, or shorts. Presentable jeans may be worn. * Health regulations require footwear at all times. * Students coming to class dressed in unacceptable or revealing clothing will be asked to leave and receive an absence for that day. * Hair dyed an unnatural color is unacceptable. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY/DISCIPLINE POLICY * Students will treat all school property with respect while taking classes at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. * Students are expected to work in a cooperative and respectful manner with their teachers and classmates. * If a work or behavior problem occurs, the teacher or coordinator will call the student’s parents to communicate the problem. A class change may be offered and the work or behavior policy reviewed. * Any second behavioral offense will result in dismissal from the entire Summer Session without any tuition refund. St. Margaret’s Early Childhood Development Center Summer Camp at St. Margaret’s for Preschoolers and Rising Kindergarteners The St. Margaret’s Early Childhood Development Center Summer Camp- where learning and fun are one! Days filled with hands-on, minds-on activities that incorporate language and literature, art, drama, math and science, music and movement experiences. Four exciting weekly topics are planned to spark the imagination and promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language growth. St. Margaret’s offers small class sizes with credentialed lead teachers and assistants in each classroom. For children ages 2.9 (by September 1) to entering kindergarten Fall 2011) Enroll for 1, 2, 3 or all 4 weeks. Half or full day options. The Morning Preschool Program offers: Week One: Storybook Theatre Children’s classics come alive through literature, cooking, dramatic play and art. Puppetry, set and costume design, build skills and confidence through creative dramatics. Children explore plot and character development and try switching around the classics to create their own endings. Surprise guest storyteller on Friday – “Showtime!” Week Two: Let’s Go Camping Help prevent “Nature Deficit Disorder”: Explore the outdoors and rekindle a respect for the earth. Children will have wilderness experiences in “nearby nature” with plant studies, campfire songs and stories. Come one come all to Friday’s all- class-sing-a-long and visit from Smokey Bear. Week Three: Country Western Hoe Down Grab your partner round and round. We’ll have a “Rootin Tootin Good Ole Time” as we weave math, dramatic play, music and dance into a hands on Country Western Curriculum. Learn storytelling, leather craft, country music and dance. Master the hay bale maze and learn to ride on a western saddle. Celebrate on Friday with a Country Western Hoe Down. Week Four: Take a Bite out of a Book When children “read” a recipe to measure, pour, mix and cook, they are engaged in many areas of the curriculum- math literacy, science, language, and fine motor are involved. Most recipes allow the children to prepare “One perfect serving”. The children will prepare a special snack related to our daily story. Friday your child takes home a cookbook of kid tested recipes. The Morning Krazy About Kindergarten* Program offers: *(for children 5 by September 1st, 2011 and entering in kindergarten this fall) Small class sizes with credentialed lead teachers and assistants in each classroom. Come join the fun in the wonderful world of kindergarten with learning activities planned just for this age group. Literacy, math, science and creative activities provide a mini-Kindergarten experience, enabling children to make a smooth transition into the world of red sweaters at St. Margaret’s School in the fall. Lunch Bunch Program Lunch Bunch is offered as an additional hour from 11:45 – 12:30. Children bring their own sack lunch and stay to socialize and play on the yard. Playground Scientists Afternoon Enrichment Program Extend your child’s morning experience and add on the afternoon for a full-day from 8:45 am – 3:30 pm or sign your child up just for the afternoon from 12:30 – 3:30 Playground Scientists will be involved each week with nature and gardening, cooking, water and sand, light and shadows, woodworking and art. LANGUAGE ARTS READING FIRST GRADE READING CLINIC Come spend some time in a first grade classroom, play on the big playground, and read with other first-graders! Brush up on your decoding skills while applying newly learned phonics rules. We will also work on: comprehension skills, developing the strategies of sequence, cause and effect, identifying main ideas, and inference. You will be able to use your newfound knowledge through writing, drawing, and other fun activities! Don’t miss out!! Grade: 1 Offered Weeks 1 & 4 Instructor: Kendra Johnson Tuition: $252 Week I; $280 Week 4 SECOND GRADE READING CLINIC Come and read with other second-graders! Brush up on phonetic rules, reading fluency, reading comprehension and writing skills. Students are assessed and given appropriate assignments according to their academic needs. This highly individualized program is supported with nightly reading assignments and a motivating reward system. Grade: 2 Offered Week 4 Instructor: Paula Brown Tuition: $295 (material fee included) SECOND GRADE NOVEL STUDY Follow the misadventures of a young grade-schooler, Ramona Quimby, in the novel, Beezus and Ramona, by Beverly Cleary. Students will explore the world of Ramona by analyzing this “kids’ classic” piece literature through the use of thinking maps, depth and complexity, small group discussions and extension menus. We will dig deeper into this novel by engaging in learning-rich activities such as: creating a character suitcase, a “theme” in a bottle, and designing a new book jacket will help tap into students’ multiple intelligences to help them better comprehend the plot, setting, character, and theme. This novel study will encourage and motivate a love for reading and learning. Students will be creating collaborative character studies, designing story flip charts, as well as participating in debates of character analysis. Students will dive into the novel and gain an in depth understanding. We will engage in scholarly discussions while exploring every aspect of the novel – characters, plot development, moral dilemmas, and theme – utilizing extension menus, creative Thinking Maps, and depth and complexity. Students will have many opportunities to read “between the lines” and develop strong connections to the characters and story. This course is designed to build and strengthen comprehension skills. Book will be provided on the first day. Week 2: Frindle, written by Andrew Clements Week 3: Chocolate Fever, written by Robert Kimmel Smith Grade: 3 Offered Weeks 2 & 3 Instructor: Mick Vollmer Tuition: $290 (material fee included) BATTLE OF THE BOOKS NOVEL STUDY Want to get lost in a great book? Whether you devour books, or are still fishing for the book that will get you hooked on reading, this class will having you turning pages like a pro! We will not only study a novel, we will make it come to life. Look forward to engaging projects like puppet shows, setting “Sightseeing Tours”, PowerPoint and Glogster assignments, and creating and performing a Reader’s Theater script. Of course, there will be plenty of scholarly discussions, Literature Circles, and Guided Reading. We will use Thinking Maps and Depth and Complexity Icons to enrich our reading and show our comprehension. Participation or interest in Battle of the Books is not necessary for this class. However, students participating or interested in BOB are welcome to get a book from the list read in a week! Title will be announced in June. Grade: 4&5 Offered: Week 4 Instructor: Colleen Beshk Tuition: $290 (material fee included) WRITING SECOND GRADE WRITING Authors unite! If you love to write, or just want to further develop your writing skills, then this is the class for you! We will be exploring the stages of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing successive versions) through the use of Thinking Maps and the Write from the Beginning program. This class will help develop students’ writing skills, and excel their writing ability. We will explore the components of good writing, and focus on what the purpose of writing is while also addressing who the audience is that we are writing for. This class encourages students to enjoy writing as a creative pastime by getting them to share their work and help each other improve their writing abilities. Grade: 2 Offered Week 2 Instructor: Tess Posvistak Tuition: $280 INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH AND PRESENTATION Students will choose a California Native American tribe to research. We will explore note-taking skills, mapping, and using voice to report information in an interesting and enjoyable way. Students will peer edit as well as learn to self-edit papers. We will then take the papers and put them in a PowerPoint presentation to be presented on the final day of the course. Students should provide their own flash drive. Art can be an author’s inspiration! Come join us in this unique experience as we stimulate the creative writing process by using art as our inspiration. Students will learn to write from other points of view while broadening their inference skills to interpret all about the characters depicted in various works of art. Using Thinking Maps, we will generate narrative pieces that will bring these characters to life. Mini-lessons will include character development, word choice, sentence fluency, and voice. Don’t miss this opportunity to “zoom in” on your writing! Grades: 4 & 5 Offered Week 2 Instructor: Stephanie Cole Tuition: $280 ROCK YOUR RESEARCH Give your 4/5 student that head start advantage in their ability of being able to find, retrieve and evaluate reliable information. Students will learn research skills in a fun, interactive way using the arts. Learning how to access on-line a variety of books, encyclopedias and beginning note-taking will be the summer focus as we research interesting fun topics. Grades: 4 & 5 Offered Week 3 Instructor: Victoria Burnett, Lower School Librarian/Artist in Residence Tuition: $280 SPEECH AND DEBATE Talk about your own interests and impress your parents, teachers and friends with remarkable presentations! You will learn to develop, design, and deliver persuasive speeches and debates on topics of your own choosing. You will learn techniques in research skills to support your main points and gain knowledge in organizing speeches and structuring debate arguments. You will become skilled at effective delivery practices including developing and using PowerPoint slides while delivering speeches and engaging in debate every class session. Materials include a specialized workbook, sample speeches and debates and a personalized DVD of each student debating for self critique. Grades: 3 - 5 Offered Week 4 Instructor: Dr. Paula Youra Tuition: $290 (material fee included) Got Words? Learn to develop, design, and deliver Oxford style and collegiate debates. You will discover techniques in research skills to be convincing every time you speak. You will become skilled at effective delivery practices including developing and using debate strategies and engaging in debate every class session. Grades: 6 - 8 Offered Week 3 Instructor: Dr. Paula Youra Tuition: $290 (material fee included) STEM OFFERINGS (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) SCIENCE KITCHEN CHEMISTRY CREATIONS Uncover the scientist in you! Experiment with safe household products to make “flubber”, ice cream, crystals and more. Through hands-on experimentation and small group lessons, each “scientist” will learn and discover basic scientific principles. A Kitchen Chemistry recipe book will be distributed at the end of the course. Come ready to get messy, learn and have fun! Grades: 1–2

What tools did people use to survive? What does it mean to be human? How are we all alike and different? Students will get to discover the answer to these questions and many more by becoming anthropologists for a week. They will get to dig into the extraordinary world of archaeology, meet other cultures, and have a first-hand anthropological field experience all within the classroom. Grades: 1 - 5 Offered Week 1 Instructor: Morgan Young Tuition: $325 (material fee included)  ECOLOGY Have your child begin envisioning the future they want to inhabit and learn about real-life examples of how people around the world are working to make a difference in our environment! Participants will develop an understanding and appreciation of the relationship of living things to each other and to their natural environment. Students will get to perform hands-on activities, like building their own terrarium, in order to learn about their natural surroundings. Students will be encouraged to take their knowledge of ecosystems and start thinking about what they can do to help maintain a stable and flourishing environment for our future. Grades: 1 - 5 Offered Week 3 Instructor: Morgan Young Tuition: $325 (material fee included) LAB /EXPERIMENTS Students will perform hands-on experiments covering a diverse field of science topics. They will get to perform various physical and chemical reactions along with conducting their own scientific investigation in which they will have to create a hypothesis, test their hypothesis, and form a conclusion based off of their results. Students will be challenged to think like a scientist and use the scientific method to guide their experiments and investigations. Grades: 4 & 5 Offered Week 2 Instructor: Morgan Young Tuition: $325 (material fee included)  ASTRONOMY Learn astronomy through the use of iPads! Travel through the expanse of the universe and discover just how much SPACE there is in Space. As technology is advancing, it is important that students learn how to use the tools around them to discover amazing facts! Students will be engaged through interactive applications on their own I-pad and be able to research and learn all about astronomy. They will explore the world of stars, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and many other exciting objects in outer space. Grades: 4 & 5 Offered Week 4 Instructor: Morgan Young Tuition: $325 (material fee included)  OCEAN SCIENCE Discover an amazing and diverse ecosystem right in our own backyard: the ocean! Interactive labs, fun games and a field trip to the beach enable students to gain a deeper understanding of how biology, chemistry, geology and physics play a role in the study of the ocean. Students come away from the class with valuable science skills to use in the school year,

and a greater awareness of our oceans. Presented by Mr. Harrington the recipient of "The Formal Teacher Excellence award in Ocean Sciences," 2008 from USC and the Quiksilver Foundation. Grades: 6-8 Offered Weeks 2, 3 & 4 Instructor: Eric Harrington Tuition: $280 INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL SCIENCE The summer physical science course is designed to give students an overview of common strands in basic chemistry and physics including, but not limited to, the nature of matter, atoms & elements, chemical reactions of matter, motion and forces, and energy transformation. Students will discover how science affects every aspect of their lives. Therefore, students will be provided practical and topical information as well as hands-on laboratory activities for each topic investigated. Grades: 6-8 Offered Weeks 2, 3, & 4 Instructor: Julianna So Tuition: $280 SCIENTIFIC ADVENTURES

Tired of doing science indoors? Do you like to explore and discover new things? Well this course is just for you. In Scientific Adventures students will be exploring and investigating three different local environments (riparian, chaparral, and tide pools). Using key steps to the scientific method and digital photography, students will be documenting the flora (plants), fauna (animals), and geology (rocks) of these unique environments. Nearly every major film, recording, and video game production makes use of computer created/generated/edited audio. This is a project-based course in which students will learn hands-on about the fundamentals of digital audio editing, sequencing, conversion, and distribution through the use of numerous free software tools. In addition to learning about the history of electronic music and discovering a wide range of artists in the genre, the week will culminate in the composition of an original work of electronic music. While students should be comfortable with the basic use of the Windows and/or Mac OS X operating systems, running applications, and performing Internet information searches, there are no additional prerequisites as all the necessary skills will be covered in the class. From Sunflowers to Haystacks to Starry Night this week will be full of color and lively brush strokes. Week one also offers a contemporary look into the southwestern style of Georgia O’Keeffe. With her flowers, landscapes and still life paintings we will fill the art room with sun light and color. Week 2: Pablo Picasso & Keith Haring Known for his colorful cubist style, Picasso offers an excellent opportunity to get a little crazy with portraits and drawings. Week 3: Henri Matisse & Frida Kahlo The paper cutting style of Henri Matisse is just one of the many lovely styles we will explore this week. Including a self portrait, and watercolor painting, summer artists will follow Matisse’s style of painting throughout his life. Frida Kahlo’s expressive personal style is exciting and colorful. As a woman artist she led the way for many to follow. We will study her enormous body of work and create some masterpieces ourselves. Week 4: Alexander Calder & Eric Carle The whimsical style of both artists creates a great blend of fun and creativity. Calder was the pioneer of the mobile, so we will build our own hanging, swinging, swaying mobile too. Students are guided by lecture, demonstration, and lab investigation through topics of historical interest to important scientists. TOPICS IN MODERN WORLD HISTORY Prerequisite: sophomore, junior or senior standing In this semester-long course, students study a range of prominent historical topics throughout modern world history. Topics of revolution, genocide, religion, and cultural exchange will be analyzed from a comparative perspective and students will be challenged to provide interpretations of the causes, phases, and results of events such as the Haitian Revolution of the 18th century, Islamic Revitalization movements of the 19th century, and the Cambodian Genocide of the 20th century. The course will place a strong emphasis on reading comprehension strategies and forms of written communication. Students will receive regular instruction, practice, and feedback in literacy skills such as thesis development, analysis and synthesis of historical sources, argumentation, and organization of expository essays. A field trip to the University of California Irvine’s Langson Library is included in the course as a component of the research paper process, and minor additional fees may apply.
