"Xenie" Hall, learn they've have grown apart in more ways than one. J.T., the thoughtful even-keeled son of the legendary country music songwriter Townes Van Zandt, believes there's more to fishing than catching fish. Short-tempered Xenie, a "firewood salesman," sees it differently and fishes like it's a race against the clock. Their different approaches to fishing and life emerge and clash on the snowy river banks and damp hotel rooms of British Columbia in this true story of a friendship stretched to the breaking point.

An exploration of life in the disappearing wilderness of the West, Low & Clear unfolds with moments of humor and pathos, success and failure, as J.T. and Xenie find themselves on a fishing trip that could be their last. The DVD includes the 70-minute feature film, a behind-the-scenes documentary Making Low & Clear, deleted scenes, and the short film Northwoods. (#B23571) DVD; 70-min.; 5.1 surround sound

The plan was simple. A small group of anglers, a fresh set of radials, and a pocketful of pesos. With dreams of cornering the market on cheap fish tacos while avoiding Montezuma’s Revenge, and finding out if everything you read about remote areas to fish on the Internet are true.

Join four fish bums with two first names as they cover 8,000 miles of Mexican dirt in a diesel pick-up converted to run on cooking oil while soaking flies at every opportunity. Trying their best to avoid break-ins, break-downs, break-ups and broken rods, the angling quartet cuts their own path through some of Mexico’s most rugged terrain in hopes of finding out-of-the-way locations—with fish, and escaping with captured memories.(#B23568) DVD; 60-min. Gin-Clear Media's newest feature film "Hatch" documents the world's most extraordinary insect hatches and the fantastic fly fishing that accompanies them. There are massive hatches of mayfly on the chalkstreams of England, trout eating ants off bridges in Slovenia, huge cicadas eaten by equally huge trout in the streams of New Zealand, and even a feeding frenzy after a "hatch" of krill in the ocean.

Narrated by Greg French, the film "Hatch" explores remote corners of the world for hidden fly-fishing treasures, while seamlessly highlighting the pivotal role fly fishers play as guardians of the water.(#B22947) DVD; 43-min.; +23-min. bonus Price -- $29.95

This DVD is a great introduction into Tenkara flies from Dr. Ishigaki himself, the man who many believe to be the modern day Tenkara Sensei. If you have ever fished with a sakasa kebari (reverse-hackle fly), you know how effective and fun these flies are to fish. The reverse hackle provides resistance against the rod tip, creating lots of motion underwater to attract fish and opening up new techniques to fish your flies withaction instead of just a dead drift.

Japanese tenkara masters have been using these techniques for centuries, and now you can, too. They'll even show you how to adapt your favorite Western pattern and how to fish it.

tyinG tenkara Flies: vol. 1with Dr. Hisao Ishigaki, Daniel Galhardo, and Chris Stewart

It starts off with a few introductory videos by all three fly tyers, along with short introduction and over-view of traditional Japanese fly-tying. Daniel includes some more exotic traditional Japanese flies as well. This will definitely open your eyes to the possibilities that are out there. Chris introduces the minimum tools needed to start tying Tenkara flies and shows how to

save money and deepen your engagement in the sport by tying your own flies with minimal cost.

Not limited to the fly-tying bench, you will see fish caught on the very flies tied in the DVD, and flies photographed in fast current and how they behave underwater.

Stalking Trophy Brown TroutA Fly-Fisher's Guide to Catching

the Biggest Trout of your Lifeby John Holt

The most secretive of the trout family but also the most aggressive, brown trout are a paradox. Among freshwater fish, their predatory nature is ri-valed only by the pike family. Among fishermen, they are an object of endless fascina-tion and speculation. After a lifetime of fishing the West, John Holt has reached a point where he can annually catch more than a half dozen mon-ster browns, each weighing more than five pounds. Most fishermen who would give their eye teeth to reproduce his success. For seekers of large browns (or any large trout) this book is without peer.

Long FliesStreamers, Bucktails, and Other Big Fish Flies

by Gary Borger & Jason BorgerLong Flies, is book three in the Borger's Fly Fishing The

Book Series. The term long flies is more than just a slightly enigmatic name for a book, it's a topic that has significant relevancy for all fly fishers because fishing long flies holds the greatest opportunity for the fly rodder to take big fish in any water type. Big fish target the food sources that provide the greatest amount of energy; these are the long fly organisms such as minnows, leeches, eels, mice, and more.

Long fly patterns imitate these big organisms that big fish feed on, and that means fish ranging from big trout to big tarpon. The concept of long flies and what they can do for the fly fisher goes well beyond simple patterns and basic retrieves. Indeed, the long-fly world is a rather refined place, honed to effectiveness by many decades of angler input.

In this book you will find an historical exploration of long flies, from their earliest, simplistic days to twenty-first century techno-flies. Gary Borger covers the origins and development of long flies in their many forms, from bucktails to stream-ers, muddlers to divers, strip flies to collared leeches, and much more. There’s a thorough look at the characteristics of successful long flies, and the theories and practices of fishing them. Eighty-one example imitations are shown in full color. Included are a host of successful tactics such as the Broadside Float, the Leisenring Lift, Shotgunning, the Jigging Swing, the Baitfish from L, the Strip/Tease, Walking the Dog, Trolling and Drifting, and many other methods.

Throughout the book, the how to and why to are brought to life with stories that stretch back over half-a-century of Gary's fly-fishing life. Complementing all of this is a collection of black-and-white illustrations by Jason Borger.

Spring Creekby Nick Lyons

The classic memoir of a fly fisherman's love affair with a river. Popular fly-fishing author Nick Lyons recounts his adventures on Spring Creek, a private trout river that has been called the best on our continent. Lyons explores the secrets and confronts the challenges of the river, and draws the rare portrait of an angler learning to fishmore wisely.

The river is one of those rare places where the trout are as long as your arm but also exceedingly difficult to catch. Lyons explores its secrets and confronts its great-est challenges. At first he catches little. Then slowly, he acquires the various and special skills and disciplines necessary to take the large wary brown trout of this extraordinary river.

Spring Creek is a richly hu-morous and perceptive account of an angler's passion—and a book all fishermen will cherish.

May The Rivers Never Sleepby Bill & John McMillan

The essence of May the Rivers Never Sleep is the physi-cal and biological tapestry of river time—month by month, a concept fostered by the Canadian author and conservation-ist Roderick Haig-Brown. The McMillan's river calendar was shaped by thousands of hours angling, observing and snorkel-ing to document the diversity and patterns of river life above and below water. The essays and gorgeous photographs in this book reflect the lives of father & son largely spent on rivers as anglers, naturalists, and scientists —men struck by the wonder of the life of rivers. This book is their wake-up call to nurture at all costs the natural resilience of wild-fish populations and breadth of life they support so that rivers remain places of revelation for future anglers and scientists.(#B22490) hardcover; all-color, 9x12, 152 pgs. The Constant Heartby Craig Nova

What does it mean to be a decent man? These are the lessons that Jake’s father, a wildlife biologist, tries to impart to his son, often on fishing trips to their beloved Furnace Creek.

Bound up in the laws of Einstein’s cosmological con-stant theory of relativity, these lessons will ultimately influ-ence Jake’s own career as an astronomer. Out on the creek, both father and son conquer their greatest challenges.

The Constant Heart is a potent, and moving book that utilizes the laws of nature and science to illuminate what it means to be a man today. It is an inspiring book that most immediately celebrates the bonds of father and son while exploring the beauty and intensity of love and the profound attachments between human beings, even in the face of great disease and danger.

New! Fly Fishing the Harriman RanchLessons Learned & Friends MadeSight Fishing to Selective Trout

by John McDanielExperienced anglers argue that The Ranch offers the most

challenging light tackle fly fishing on the planet. There are reasons for the legendary difficulty: prolific hatches of aquatic insects occur throughout the season. The slow, clear water allows the trout to carefully inspect potential food sources. Finally, the rainbows are educated daily by skilled anglers.

But the difficult fishing is great fun! The broad, open, flat water allows the angler to locate rising fish at remarkable distances. 98% of the time, you can sight-fish. The perfect place to fly cast—the water is shallow, the bottom is even, the current is gentle, and there are no obstacles to hit with your back casts. Serenity is conferred by the Ranch. The water is calm, tran-quil, and comforting.

John McDaniel recorded data for every hour he has fished or guided since 1983. The 10,500 hours logged, provide many insights including the type of fly used to take each of the 1,523 fish that himself or his clients have landed that were 17 inches or longer in length— 93% of those fish were taken on dry flies—any one of which would be the fish of a lifetime if it were taken on a dry fly on most flowing trout water of the world. John offers many de-tailed descriptions and photographs of these Harriman trout.

Montana Moments . . .Cookin' on the Hook

by Ellen BaumlerMembers of the Lewis and Clark Expedition heard of the wonders of the Yellowstone region, but they did not venture that far south. When Expedition member John Colter returned to Montana to trap, his near death experi-ence escaping the Blackfeet led him through a portion of what would become Yellowstone Park. Most attrib-uted his descriptions of fire and brimstone to delerium, and they called the area Colter’s Hell. But other stories gradually emerged. One of the famous tales first told by mountain men involved fishing.

Montana pioneer attorney Cornelius Hedges was the first to provide a written account. An avid fisherman, Hedges was with the 1870 Washburn-Doane Expedi-tion organized by a group of Montanans to explore the Yellowstone region. Hedges wrote that as he hooked a trout, he missed landing the fish on the bank. The fish came off the hook and flopped into a nearby thermal spring. By the time Hedges retrieved the fish with his pole, the trout was cooked through. While Hedges was too shocked to try it again, others reading his account took up the sport.Henry Winser, in his 1883 guide to Yellowstone Park, describes the art of hooking a trout, swinging the pole over to a thermal pool, and plunging the fish in, hook and line still attached. Cooking on the hook became a favorite sport. One preferred place was the Fishing Cone that Hedges described, which is a spring in the West Thumb Geyser Basin. Fishermen at the Fishing Cone sometimes dressed in a chef’s hat and apron to have their picture taken “cooking on the hook.” The Park once allowed this practice, but it is now prohibited. Cooking on the hook is now just another famous fish story.

Intimate portraits of locals in both booming cities and dusty, dwindling towns along the Yellowstone River, illustrate the history and controversies sur-rounding this enigmatic watershed leading to questions about its future. Connect with colorful characters, get lost in the hypnotic cast of a fly rod, and experience silhouetted moments of fireside stories on this heartfelt river adventure.

From the Gateway to the Yellowstone Park in Gardiner to the confluence of the Missouri River at historic Fort Buford, North Dakota, two boats drifted north on the freestone waters of the Yellowstone River. Led by fly fishing guide and 4th generation Montanan, Robert Hawkins, the small crew experi-ences a soul searching and inspirational journey. The crew eases into life amongst the peaceful sounds of a massive water flow, flanked on each side by rugged mountains, plains full of big game, and an unending sky. -–———————–-Yellowstone, Cutthroats, and Me

by Dick CrysdaleDick Crysdale's nearly lifelong affection for Yellowstone Park,

Yellowstone Lake and its native cutthroat trout have combined in this memoir. Dick's youthful summers at the Lake Boat Dock give us a nostalgic window into an almost-innocent time in our nation's history, the late 1950s and early 1960s. Hard work and equally hard play were routine for the young people who flocked to the Park every summer, to serve meals, clean cabins and to serve as fishing guides.

Change is inevitable and the most wrenching change for Dick has been the decline of the native cutthroat population, as they have fallen victim to the more aggressive and larger lake trout. The damage has not been limited to the cutthroat but extends to

other animals which depend on the cutthroat: osprey, bears, pelicans, eagles. After 10,000 years, an apoc-alypse happened on Yellowstone Lake. It will be difficult to reverse.

All is not lost. Current efforts to control the lake trout population are

showing promise. And a reinvigorated new group of young people, with a respect for the wilderness environment, are enjoying our na-tion's parks and protecting their priceless beauty.

Blood KnotsA Memoir of Fathers,

Friendship, and Fishingby Luke Jennings

A brilliant & dramatic memoir of an angler's life. As a child in the 1960s, he was fascinated by the rivers & lakes around his home. With library books as his guide, he applied himself to the task of learning to fish. It would lead to bright streams & wild country, but would end with his mentor's cap-ture. His progress was slow, and for years, he caught nothing.

But then a series of teachers presented themselves, including an in-spirational young intelligence officer, from whom he learned stealth, deception, and the art of dry-fly fishing. So began an enlightening but often dark-shadowed journey of discovery, but would end with his mentor's capture, torture, & execution by the IRA.

Blood Knots is about angling, about great fish caught & lost, but it is also about friendship, honor, & coming of age.(#B23171) hardcover; 5x8 inches, 240 pgs. Price -- $24.95

"Blood Knots is a wondrous book. As a lifetime obsessive reader of angling literature I

know whereof I speak. As an occasional writer of it I am hum-

bled indeed. In modern times Jennings is in the stratosphere of Roderick Haig-Brown and Tom McGuane's rarified The Longest Silence. The prose

is graceful and the treatment of material utterly fresh. I couldn't

recommend it more highly."—Jim Harrison

The stories in Quest for Home Waters comprise a cross-section through Keith Stamm's 50-some years of trout fishing experience. Some of them were written from journals kept during his fishing trips, others from memory long after the fact. Each chapter can be read as an individual story, but they all weave their way to tell a much larger story—the quest & struggle of one man to make peace with the contra-dictions of modern life by going fishing.

The 26 stories range from boyhood Wisconsin spring creeks to treks over steep mountain passes, down ice cold rivers, into mosquito-infested alder swamps. Each tested his strength and endurance, and deepened his knowledge of nature. Many have been a source of enduring friendships. The stories form a history of relentless search for home water in the face of competing water uses and increasing angling pressure—beg the nagging question: is the reality of home water slip-ping from our grasps? Remember the place you caught your first fish. Does it exist today? Can we still find those places that feed the soul?

As he tells his stories Keith's hope is you not only travel along and "experience" some of what he saw and the awe that he felt. He also hopes to inspire you to plan an adventure you've been putting off for too long, and if so may his stories give you ideas for getting more out of the trip than just catching fish.

Fishing is sometimes viewed as escape—getting away from the pressures and routines of daily life. We all seem

to need some way to do that, and it is one reason for “going fishing,” but going fishing is not only a way to get

away from something; it is escaping into something.

The Horse In My Garageby Patrick F. McManus

The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories is a hilarious addition to McManus' existing work in humor. The author weighs in on his childhood, everyday life, and outdoor tales with his typical exaggerat-ed commentary that will elicit a belly laugh from all types of readers.

McManus plays off the recent obsession with hoard-ers in his surprising story "The Lady Who Kept Things." Red Jacket: A Lute Bapcat Mysteryby Joseph Heywood

Meet Lute Bapcat, orphan, loner, former cowboy, Rough Rider, beaver trapper, a man who in 1913, with the enthusiastic recommen-dation by Theodore Roosevelt, himself, becomes one of the Michi-gan's first civil service game wardens. His territory: The Keweenaw Peninsula, the state's industrial center.

Featuring a stunning array of characters, fascinating histori-cal detail, and Heywood's trademark writing about life and work in Michigan's wild, Red Jacket asks Lute to confront an explosive, bloody labor strike; a siege-like sabotage, including a sudden rash of decapitated, spoiled deer; poisoned trout streams and well water; and unusual deforestation — all apparently designed by mine owners to deny nature's bounty to the strikers, and thereby to break the union. The strike's violence culminates in the Italian Hall disaster, during which a man allegedly yells fire in a small building with several hun-dred people inside. In the panic, 73 people are crushed or die of suf-focation, the majority of them the children and wives of striking min-ers at the hall for a Christmas party. Even with good people dying, the Michigan governor refuses to take sides. Should Lute Bapcat?(#B23394) hardcover; 6x9 inches, 352 pgs. Price -- $24.95

A clever and fast-paced murder mystery full of wit, suspense, and fly fishing. When a fishing guide reels in the body of a young man on the Madison, the Holy Grail of Montana trout rivers, Sheriff Martha Ettinger suspects foul play. It's not just the stick jammed into the man's eye that draws her attention; it's the Royal Wulff trout fly stuck in his bloated lower lip. Following her instincts, Ettinger soon finds herself crossing paths with Montana newcomer Sean Stranahan.

Fly fisher, painter, and has-been private detective, Stranahan left a failed marriage and lackluster career to retreat to Bridger, Montana, where he lives in an art studio decorated with fly-tying feathers and mouse droppings. With more luck catching fish than clients, Strana-han is completely captivated when Southern siren Velvet Lafayette walks into his life, intent on hiring his services to find her missing brother. The singer, the murdered man, the fishing guide, and the fate of the area’s wild trout swirl together into a teasing puzzle. The clues sustain a growing tension between Stranahan and Sheriff Martha’s parallel investigations, leading back to Montana's Big Business: fly fishing. Where there's money, there's bound to be crime.(#B22825) hardcover; 6x9 inches, 352 pgs. Price -- $26.95

Impressive Debut~ The Royal Wulff Murdersa novel by Keith McCafferty

Jim Harrison's latest collection of novellas, The River Swimmer, is a striking portrait of two richly-drawn, profoundly human characters striving to find their way in the world, written with freshness, abun-dant wit, and profound humanity.

In The Land of Unlikeness, sixty-year-old art history academic Clive—a failed artist, divorced and grappling with the vagaries of his declining years—reluctantly returns to his family’s Michigan farm-house to visit his aging mother. The return to familiar territory triggers a jolt of renewal—of ardor for his high school love, of his relationship with his estranged daughter, and of his own lost love of painting.

In Water Baby, Harrison ventures into the magical as an Upper Peninsula farm boy is irresistibly drawn to the water as an escape, and sees otherworldly creatures there. Faced with the injustice and pres-sure of coming of age, he takes to the river and follows its siren song.(#B23185) hardcover; 6x9 inches, 240 pgs. Price -- $25.00

He details out the most successful fishing methods, techniques and strategies; including the trout's window of vision above & below the water, how light & water speed affects the trout vision, how insects appear on the surface of the water, stealthy presentation techniques, and what the trout like to eat.

These stories came about because of experiences; because of fish that knew more about testing the elements. Because of fast balls that didn' t always stay low in the strike zone on the outside corner. Stream Dynamics for the Complete Fishermanby Robert A. Miller

For the first time ever in print, geologist and noted fishing historian Robert A. Miller takes the angler through the many geologic processes that affect the way we fish moving water. No one who seriously fishes moving water can claim to be an advanced angler without understand-ing the waters in which they fish. This book fills a big hole in the literature of fly fishing by presenting an easy to understand and concise overview of the nature of flowing water; the development of stream channel features; and the origin and evolution of stream valleys—all while emphasizing those elements of special interest to the angler.Get an equivalent of a Master’s Degree in geology and geomorphology without the cost—it’ll make you a better angler and a better person.

Beginner's Creekby John C. Pierce

This is John's third collection of personal, reflective essays written later in life. At first, he thought this set of essays to be no different from the earlier ones. Maybe this new perspective in writing comes from age, or from a settling out of the disequilibrium produced by multiple life disturbances, or even from a growing reluctance to encounter difficult choices he's had to make more recently. He knows that whatever sense is conveyed in these essays cannot escape the per-sonal history that carried him here. Trying to understand that history brings him to the point from which to return to the beginning—and be granted much good fortune to share times on his "beginner' s creeks."

River Pimpby Eric Stroup

River Pimp is at its very core, an honest description of the current state of the fly-fishing industry. It is an accurate portrayal of what life is really like from the inside out, from an author who has been on each side of the proverbial counter—as a professional fly tier, guide, author, presenter and former fly shop owner. Eric Stroup has done everything fly fishing and continues to devote himself to the preservation and pleasure of fly fishing—his book shares much of that. The experiences and opinions that are shared in this book are sometimes controversial, sometimes tragic, and sometimes hilarious. Eric’s perspective on the industry is refreshing, and whether you agree with him or not, his positions come from a place where few people can claim they’ve been. River Pimp exposes an appreciation of the sacrifice and dedication required to succeed, and will give the reader new appreciation for just how special—and important—the corner fly shop really is.

Fish FoolishnessA Cartoon Collection of Fish & Fishing Humor

by Peter NilsenNilsen's cartoon portraits derive from all those ridiculous moments

on and off the stream: the ripped waders, the dunking we took while trying to land that trophy fish, times when the fish weren' t rising or the river was blown out from three days of rain, or maybe when we' re dog-tired from casting all day and a couple of gin-and-tonics seem like a welcome relief. It' s about the jokes and stories we've shared with fishing buddies, recounting the moment that dufus waded through a pool of rising browns just as you had identified the perfect fly or maybe it' s describing the huge fish that broke off right before the net. This book humorously illustrates–literally & figuratively–the times that make the memorable fishing trips stick out in our minds forever.

Jordan the Rodmakerby William H. Jordan

Jordan the Rodmaker chronicles the life of Wesley D. Jordan from the age of five, when the ponds, streams and waters called him to the sport of fishing. Foremost a fisherman, the art of rodmaking fell into place when by happenstance the opportunity arose in 1919 with the startup of the Cross Rod Co. by owner & boss W.R. Forsyth. Thus began a lifelong romance with bamboo and his start in life as a self-taught rodmaker. Fast forward to 1938, when Jordan joined the legendary C.F. Orvis Co. in Manchester, Vermont as their superinten-dent-rodmaker. Although during the depression, through dedication to excellence & his patented waterproof impregnation of bamboo, the company survived and prospered through the difficult periods of war, bamboo shortages and the challenge of fiberglass rods. Over his 33 years Orvis grew from a company in receivership with two employees to one in a leading position of prominence in the industry. Retiring from Orvis in 1971, he gave freely of his time to teach youngsters the art & joy of fishing. He fished the lakes & streams that were in his blood from the day he caught his first brook trout until 1975.

A Fly Rod in My Sea BagFishing Adventures in Baghdad

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2005-2011by Joel G. Stewart

Joel Stewart found himself based in Camp Victory on the grounds of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s former Al Faw Palace. With numerous man-made lakes stocked by the former dictator with a vari-ety of sport fish, in the down hours from a stressful job in a war zone, Commander Stewart did what any good fisherman would do—he went fishing. With the foresight to have packed a fly rod in his sea bag, he began an odyssey unparalleled in the history of fishing. As he discovered the strange fish inhabiting the lakes in the compound, he began to share his catches with friends. Others, fascinated by his catches, began to join him, and soon he was teaching numerous others how to fly fish. Thus, the Baghdad School of Fly Fishing was born, an angling club that remained in existence for the remainder of the time American troops were in Iraq. From the many tales of fish caught and released, hooked and lost; to the struggles of finding fish-ing equipment and how numerous individuals and companies stepped up to the plate; to the growth of the Baghdad Angler’s Club—this story of fly fishing will fascinate fishermen and non-anglers alike.

Joel Stewart ordered from ‘the Book Mailer’ while he was stationed in Iraq. The e-mail’s and photos he shared with us conveyed his passion for fly fishing, and we read with great interest the adventures he discovered while pursuing it in a foreign land. We were always very proud to send Joel books & fly-tying supplies, and often included a few select extras. We would have liked to send them for nothing, however, the Postal Service doesn’t ship overseas for free. And although the journey is slow, Joel’s patience paid off when the ‘goods’ finally arrived and he generously shared them with his bunkmates. We thanks Joel for all his “recruiting efforts,” as there are far more fly fishers coming home than we had going over. We welcome Joel back to the States, and know he will keep up the good work sharing his passion for fly fishing with new folks here at home.

There is a lot of literature on fly fishing, much of it very good and some of it very enjoyable. ‘A Fly Rod in My Sea Bag’ may not take place on our famous blue ribbon waters, but the fly fishing essense remains true. A fly fisher’s adap-tation to situations and opportunity is key. It is with great pleasure we offer you this title, and our kudo’s to Joel for his dedication, both in fly fishing and in service to America.

LaFontaine Sparkle Yarn~ only available at the Book Mailer!(custom colors with Gary's specific mix of yarn and Antron fibers)

~~Sparkle Yarn~~What is the most frustrating problem with Antron yarn? Finding it.

It is a miracle material -- just look in any fly tying catalog and you'll see how it has been embraced since it was first used on the LaFontaine Sparkle Pupa in 1972. But there are many different types of Antron, and only one type of yarn was chosen by Gary for fly tying. To ensure the availability of the right type of Antron yarn for our own flies, and for you personal tying, we contracted for

production runs of custom colors of this perfect yarn.1 color per bag (enough for hundreds of flies) Price -- $1.25

~~Touch Dubbing~~This is the best way to dub; no other method will form bodies as

sparse and fuzzy. Used for the overbody of the Sparkle Pupa patterns, this material is absolutely essential for the touch dubbing technique. If the pattern calls for fur, just mix it together with the touch dubbing.

Use BT's Tacky Wax (p.22) to coat the tying thread, then pinch a small ball of dubbing and move it over the sticky thread. The dubbing seems to magically stick–your fingers never touch the thread. Easy!

~~Umpqua Bright Green Yarn~~Sometime in the past Umpqua Feather Merchants began tying

the Sparkle Pupa patterns with a bright fluorescent green yarn. Our private tyers continued to used the Dark Green (#Y206) per Gary's instructions. The Magic of the White MarkerCaddisflies devoted a group of anglers into using a marker to color

the last few inches of their tippets "white" for nymph fishing. In the book this is called the Magic Act because the fishing can subsequent-ly seem quite miraculous. An ordinary marker won't work for this trick, it has to be an opaque, metal white marker.

Our LaFontaine Private Label Flies are custom-tied to our specifications based on LaFontaine literature (mainly Trout Flies: Proven Patterns). As a result flies are a limited-edition item and fly inventory is driven by popularity (the better it sells, the more we order). If you order early, there is a better chance we'll have what you want in stock. But as time rolls on, stock diminishes. If we are out of the fly you want, we can

backorder that specific pattern or you can choose to substitute a nearby size if available. It is important to note that we can only re-stock once a year, so it can take many months to fill backorders.

Deep Sparkle Pupa Brown/Bright-Green-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Brown/Orange-- 12, 14, 16 Brown/Yellow-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Dark Gray-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Ginger-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Olive-- 14, 16, 18~ this is the fly (along with the Emergent Sparkle Pupa) that started the Antron revolution -- and it's still the best caddis pupa imitation. Fish it dead drift (weight on the leader) two or three hours before the start of the actual emergence. Or, when trout start slashing the surface sporadically, swing it across a flat. (p. 112 of Trout Flies)

Dancing Caddis Brown/Bright-Green-- 12, 14 Brown/Yellow-- 12, 14 Ginger-- 12, 14 Gray-- 12, 14 Russet-- 12, 14~ tied so that the hook point rides up. On tough, flat water streams this is my caddis dry fly imitation. The Dancing Caddis is earning a splen-did reputation on lakes, too. Ever notice how stillwater caddisflies "run" across the surface after emerging. This fly skates beautifully, leaving the same "V" wake on the water. Tip: grease the whole leader. (p. 154 of Trout Flies)

Diving Caddis Brown/Bright-Green-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Brown/Yellow-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Dark Gray-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Light Ginger-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Olive-- 12, 14, 16~ in a recent survey of commercial fly sales only one winged wet fly pattern (the forgotten fly style) ranked in the top 20 -- it was this wonderful, imitative pattern. Gary considered this an indispensable pattern in his fly box. Caddis can be the phantom insect anglers can't see but must trust in by the way the trout are feeding. Extra protection for always having the right stage. (p. 32 of Trout Flies)

The bead sinks the fly, of course, but it also gives it a "jigging" motion as it bounces along the bottom. Carry both variations, regular and bead head, in your box for versatility in presentation. Emergent Sparkle Pupa Brown/Bright-Green-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Brown/Orange-- 12, 14, 16 Brown/Yellow-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Dark Gray-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Ginger-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Olive-- 14, 16, 18~ this was always Gary's #1 fish-catcher ever since it was invented. It tickled him the way it becomes the all-encompassing answer on certain rivers, such as the Gunpowder (MD) or the Sacramento (CA), and when he went there, anglers would show him their boxes stuffed with ESP's in a wide range of colors and sizes. (p. 116 of Trout Flies)

Enchanted Prince Peacock-- 10, 12, 14, 16~ this variation of the Prince Nymph was developed and tested by our research. In the LaFontaine Originals series Paul Stimpson shows how the Double Magic technique adds an aura of orange Antron around the peacock body -- and makes the classic original into a new super nymph. (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol ll, p.18)

– • – • – • –Floating Damsel Nymph Olive-- 10~ every tug of the lines results in a snaky up-and-down swimming motion. An excellent way to lake fish using a fast sinking line andvery short leader. Also great in slow water on big rivers in the weedy shallows. (p. 66 of Trout Flies)

– • – • – • –

Improved Buzz Ball Orange/Grizzly-- 14~ one fall day on a mountain lake Gary watched trout continually bust clumped balls of mating midges, all the time ignoring single insects on the water. The Improved Buzz Ball brought those cutthroat charging from many yards away. (p. 144 of Trout Flies -- this Improved Version has a "half wing" of clear Antron for better visibility)

– • – • – • –Mohawk Gray-- 14, 16 Green-- 14, 16 Orange-- 14, 16~ colored deer hair covers the rear 2/3rds of the hook shank; the front 1/3rd is always white. It's that white section that makes this pattern such a visible fly. The Mohawk often outperforms the trailing nymph or emerger. (p. 225 of Trout Flies)

Rollover Scud Olive-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Orange-- 12, 14, 16, 18 Pink-- 12, 14, 16, 18~ we have been getting so many requests for this scud imitation for rivers -- and this is a surprise because this is a fine stillwater pattern. Apparently, the off-centered weighting on this fly makes it dancetantalizingly on the dead drift in moving water. A hot pattern for the Big Horn (pink), Green River (olive), and White River (orange). And a #12 Olive racked up an incredible dayon the Box Canyon on the Henry's Fork. (p. 94 of Trout Flies)

We get notes . . .

My supply of the Sparkle Pupa was sadly

diminished 2 weeks ago (early June) in Alaska.

Before the salmon come in, established proto-

col is to catch rainbows on streamers. Nobody

told them not to eat the sparkle pupa I guess,

and it is much more fun to fish.

So I had to give my buddies some flies, leave

several in nice fish, and even the head guide re-

luctantly asked for one at the end of the week.

Gray Coughlin Gray-- 12, 14, 16~ it's afternoon and the light is starting to get soft. This is the time to start drifting a Gray Coughlin on the riffles and runs. A fine, consistent searching dry fly so drab it's hard to say what it imitates. Use it like an Adams. The quill fibers separate after a few casts. That's okay. (p. 211 of Trout Flies)

– • – • – • –

Natural Drift Stonefly Nymph Black-- 6, 8, 10 Golden-- 6, 8, 10~ still the finest stonefly nymph there is for matching the emerging insects crawling into the shallows. Fish it right next to the banks. The buoyancy of the deer hair thorax and the lead-weighted abdomen keep this fly drifting in a vertical position. (p. 91 of Trout Flies)

– • – • – • –

Drowned Trico Natural Black-- 18, 20, 22~ such a spectacular and obvious need for this imitation. The Drowned Trico imitates all of those spinners that get sucked underwater. You'll catch fish after fish on this pattern. Fish dead drift through areas where trout are working the surface. (LaFontaine Originals, Vol. lll, p.18)

Twist Nymph Peacock (with beadhead)-- 10, 12, 16 Pheasant Tail (no bead)-- 14, 18, 20, 22~ the Twist Nymph is not a miracle fly (none are), but it's antron blend makes it the perfect "settling" nymph in stillwater. The problem with most flies when they're sinking in the water, is they don't look alive. The Twist Nymph is attractive to trout, looking both alive and vulnerable as it sinks. Antron fibers around the body mimics the translucency and brightness of the edges of a mayfly nymph.(p. 104 of Trout Flies)

Were Wulff Brown & White-- 10, 12, 14, 16~ a color variation of the Wulff design. It has a hare's ear body, a mixed brown/grizzly hackle, and white calf tail wings. It was created specifically to match the western Brown Drake (none of the other Wulff patterns do), but it proved to be such a good, all-around fly on the Big Hole and other rivers that it became very popular for every-day drift boat fishing. West of Rangeleyby Robert J. Romano, Jr.

West of Rangeley, is the sequel to Romano’s enthusiastically received first novel, North of Easie. This time all is not well in the fictional hamlet of Easie, Maine, as Salvatore D’Amico, the middle-aged fly-fishing guide, is faced with the prospect of losing his beloved cabin to land developers and his favorite stream to gold dredgers. Concern grows as the sound of automatic gunfire echoes through the balsam-scented hills surrounding this quiet little town. And a mystery emerges with the sudden and inexplicable disappear-ance of a young marine recently returned from Afghanistan with wounds to both body and soul. No matter how bad things may appear the brook trout of western Maine remain as large and feisty as those in any fly fisherman’s dreams.

Most Popular~ Taper Clip LockThe Taper Clip Lock features 60 tapered slots

which match the taper of the hook point. The retention teeth lock the fly tighter as it's pushed forward, so it won't fall out. But pull

the opposite direction and the fly comes out effortlessly. The slots accommodate a wide-range of hook sizes with no stress to the clip locks. The material contains air pockets, which provides great ventilation, keeps hooks rust-free, and reduces

the box weight allowing it to float. Price -- $6.95 each (#3006)

~ Fluorocarbon Full-sink FurleD leaDers ~ Tremendous for deep water nymphing and streamer techniques. They kick air–resistant, weighted flies over wonderfully, and cut through the currents to carry patterns deeper. Especially effective for stillwater fly fishing in lakes–leaders need to sink straight, with no belly which gives extra leverage when it comes to setting the hook.

An ancient idea. Modern materials. Put them together and you have the finest leader for dry fly fishing, shallow water nymphing and lake fishing. The Furled Leader is specifically designed

for transmitting power between the fly line and the tippet. It allows the angler to cast accurately and delicately with slack line presentations in all conditions at varying distances. A Furled Leader is not hollow in the center. They're solid, don't spray water, and turn over the fly beautifully – even in windy conditions. There are several styles of furled leaders—a leader for every fly fishing situation. Casting furled leaders puts a smile on your face and makes your day of fishing far more produc-tive to boot! Leaders come with a metal ring on the tippet end. This precision crafted ring extends the life of your leader so there is no "accidentally" clipping the monofilament while changing tippet. It's very tiny with incredible break strength, yet is light enough to be used on a floating leader. Eliminating loop closing, it is highly unnoticeable, makes for quick, safe tippet changes (available without ring by special order).

~ Fluorocarbon uniForm-sink leaDers ~ The best way to describe how the Uniform-Sink Leader fishes is to picture using it on a lake with a floating line. When it is cast out it fishes at a 45 degree angle from the end of the line. It does the same thing in rivers but is harder to envision because of the effect of mov-ing water. It's a great nymph leader and pulls streamer patterns down those few extra inches that make all the difference. The enjoyment of being able to fish at different levels of the water column and not having to worry about the difficulty of casting a sink tip fly line (which seldom goes where you want it to go in the first place), is a big bonus.

Furled Leaders:All of the Secrets Behind Creating Fly Fishing's Best Leader

by Steven ZondagFurled leaders have many advantages when compared to other

types of leaders. Constructed similar to a length of rope, they are virtually memory free. This lack of memory means you never need to straighten them, they are more accurate and they help detect light strikes. Their flexibility also gives them a soft natural presentation of the fly, while still having the power to turnover long tippets. The best part is that you create these leaders at home using roughly the same time and cost as tying a fly. Creating them yourself also gives you the ability to customize every aspect of your leaders.

This book is the first of its kind, showing you all the secrets behind creating furled leaders. From the first knot to the finishing loop this fully illustrated book guides you step-by-step through creat-ing and customizing all types of furled leaders. In a short amount of time you will be able to create an unlimited supply and an unlimited variety of your own customized leaders.

Common Nymphs of Eastern North AmericaA Primer for Flyfishers and Flytiers

by Caleb J. Tzilkowski & Jay R. Stauffer, Jr.Expert anglers know that the key to success is not only basic

knowledge of the insect that artificial flies imitate, but identifying and imitating nymph appearances and habits. There are two major hurdles to overcome that make them difficult to locate, capture, and identify: first, nymphs live underwater, sometimes burrowed into the stream bottom; and second, many nymphs are nearly microscopic in size. Common Nymphs addresses those challenges by including habitat and life history information, tips for identification, and photographs of more than 30 types of insects and their imitations.

A Cup of TeaOnly a Grandmother Would Know...

WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX WX

One day my Gramma was out, and my Grampa was in charge of me. I was maybe 2-1/2 years old. Someone had given me a little ‘tea set’ as a gift, and it was one of my favorite toys.

Grampa was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of ‘tea’, which was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Gramma came home.

My Grampa made her wait on the living room sofa to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was ‘just the cutest thing!’ Gramma waited, and sure enough, here I came down the hall with a cup of tea for Grampa, and she watched him drink it up.

Then she said, (as only a Gramma would know), “Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?”

Seasons on the Flats: An Angler’s Year in the Florida Keysby Bill Horn

Migrations of fish, rise & fall of tides, and weather changes through the year in the Florida Keys. Both how-to tips for each season of the year and firsthand experiences recounted in detail. Florida Keys fishing has it all—sailfish offshore, Spanish mackerel in the gulf, silver tarpon cruise transparent waters in spring, black-tailed permit return from offshore spawning in summer, and big bonefish on the flats with one last chance for a tarpon in the cooler fall weather.

Bill Horn was Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish, Wildlife and Parks under President Reagan. He is a veteran Keys angler, having started his angling career there in 1954.(#B23198) Hardcover; photos, illus., maps, 6x9, 160 pgs. Price -- $24.95

by Robert Cunningham All anglers want to catch record-size gamefish and record-setter

Robert Cunningham figured out how to do it with eleven world records in one year! When the he hooks and fights a record-size tarpon in the Gulf of Mexico for more than eight hours, only to lose it at boat side, he is already many years into his twenty year effort to break as many IGFA rod and reel and fly rod records as he can.(#B23204) Hardcover; color illus; 6x10, 224 pgs. no rod is complete without

~~~~~~~the perfect fly line.What's perfect? Line that doesn't scare fish
and presents the fly accurately and delicately.The result Gary LaFontaine & Jim Teeny's collaboration
in the Gary LaFontaine Professional Series Line.
~~ A precise high floating, delicate weight-forward taper. It turns over a leader (even a long one) as nice as can be and lays out lightly on the water. What a great combina-tion with a furled leader (p.24).
~~ A very accurate and precise line for dry fly and nymph presentation.
~~ Olive colored with a dull surface, it won't reflect light and scare trout.
~~ A perfect line. We wouldn't offer you anything less (tongue in cheek!)
Gary LaFontaine Professional Series Fly Line Price -- $52.00 each
Stealth Rods have a perfect taper made out of the finest graphite scrim. It has a sweet action -- a softer tip allows for close, accurate and delicate presentation while the casting power in the
butt lays out 100 feet of line in the flick of a wrist. Stealthy matte black finish, black Fuji double-foot guides, and an
anodized reel seat with ebony insert. Flexes beautifully all the way down into the butt. Grip is a Full-Wells (except h-taper which is a double-well) with a front taper—handle has an uplocking reel seat.
Every rod comes with a spare tip.Call for information on other replacement parts available
Price includes the Stealth Rod with extra tip,cloth rod bag, and cordura rod case.
------------------------------------------------------------------------d-taper~ This marvelous Stealth Rod is our standard d-taper modulus design. It flexes beautifully all the way down into the butt and also has amazing casting power. The "d" stands for "delicate".p-taper~ The p-taper 6-weight is as revolutionary in its way as our 4- and 5-weight d-taper series. The "p" stands for "power". This graphite scrim is a technological advance — it makes a rod flex and store more energy in the casting stroke than any other rod. The way it bends, deep into the mid-section, makes it perfect not only for throwing a long line, but for casting weighted nymphs and streamers.h-taper~ The h-taper 3-piece rods cast just as beautifully and maybe even a little farther than the original p-taper. The main dif-ference from the p-taper is in the butt. The h-taper has a powerful fighting butt on a thinner blank. The grip is a double well with an anodized aluminum reel seat. These modifications make a excellent light saltwater rod as well a freshwater rod.
Thomas Edison once said “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”I say, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 flies that didn’t work.”
or Stream Dynamics for the Complete Fisherman? A very special title is included A Fly Rod in My Sea Bag (pg.15). The author Joel Stewart is a fellow Book Mailer customer and we remem-ber sending him books while he was stationed near Saddam Hussein’s former Al Faw Palace. Apparently for a fly-fisherman there is no where in the world that a fly rod can’t find a place to toss flies and share his passion of fishing with others. If there was one book that deserves a good read, this is it.
There are books about flies... Fishing Flies: A World Encyclo-pedia of Every Type of Fly and Flies that Catch Trout (pg.31); laughs... Patrick McManus brings us a new one on life, The Horse in My Garage (pg.10); and mysteries... The Royal Wulff Murders (pg.11) is excellent and Red Jacket (pg.11) is a new series by Joseph Heywood. Joan Wulff brings her casting tech-niques to a new level with her New Fly Casting Techniques , pair it with her DVD Dynamics of Fly Casting and get a package deal savings (pg.13). The DVD Where the Yellowstone Goes (pg.9) is a great gift idea for your angling buddy. Don’t forget your 2013 calendar, also a great gift idea—these sell out pretty fast but we have a great selection right now (pgs.16-17).
We hope you kick back and enjoy this edition of the Book Mailer. Winter is already here in Montana, and the snow has started to pile up—beginning its work on keeping Montana waters and fish healthy. It is cold here and reading or watching anything fishing right now, just seems like the perfect way to end a day. As always, thank you for your support and tightest of lines (or lies) in all your fishing adventures!
And speaking of films, Low & Clear (pg.2) is a perfect way to see how your friendship with your angling buddy measures compared to these two, JT Van Zandt and Alex Hall. A life-long friendship is under fire, but can their common thread of fly fishing hold it together? November also brings about the 20th Anniversary Edition release of Spring Creeks (pg.4) by Nick Lyons, a must-have classic for any library. Speaking of fly fishing libraries, we had a request for a list of books that would be considered “classic fly-fishing literature” A list of must-have titles for a complete fly-fishing library. We have started the list but would like to hear from you. Drop us a line via email, phone or on your order—with your insight, this may be something we can get put together fairly soon.
Long Flies (pg.4) is the third title in the Borger Fly Fishing series. Mastering the ability to sling these bigger flies guarantees the angler bigger fish in almost any situation. Blood Knots (pg. 10) is a wonderful memoir of friendship, family and fishing. The Bug Guy (pg.5) is the latest on entomology. A 2-DVD set, the first DVD is college level classroom work with the second DVD spent on the stream with practical application. The Fly Strip (pg.21) is a new item and a chance to fish some of Gary LaFontaine’s lesser known patterns. Each strip has 6 patterns, 2 of each in a different size and/or color so the possibilities are endless plus we include a couple of mystery flies... Just a fun way to add some kick to your arsenal of flies and at a reasonable price.
We also have a specially-chosen selection of feature titles from a small publisher, Whitefish Press (pgs.14-15). These titles don’t qualify for our 10% discount, but we think they are worth offering for their content as well as the quality of the books. Who could deny a title like The Complex Mind of an Ordinary Fly Fisherman,
