Staying safe

Many of us are anxious about crime. Taking afew simple precautions to make ourselves andour homes more secure can help us to avoidbeing targeted and give us peace of mind.

• Fitting your doors and windows with goodlocks can go a long way to deter burglars.

• Outdoor lights are particularly usefulbecause they not only act as a deterrent, but also make it easier for you to find yourway if you’re coming or going after dark.

• Be sure to lock all outside doors and checkthat all the windows are locked.

• Keep valuables out of sight. If you are outfor the evening, leave a front room light on(not the hall) and consider putting the radioon too.

• If your valuables are stolen, they’re morelikely to be found by the police if you mark

them with your postcode and the numberof your house and flat.

• Neighbourhood Watch schemes are selfhelp groups that work in partnership withthe police, local councils and other agenciesinvolved in community safety to preventcrime.

• You don’t need to feel embarrassed aboutrefusing to let someone into your home.Only let someone in when you’re absolutelysure that they’re genuine.

Page 15: Test guide

Valuing LivesValuing Lives is a three yearproject funded by the BigLottery which will allow AgeUK Plymouth to providesupport to 450 vulnerable or socially isolated olderpeople to significantly improve their quality of life.

Our aim is to meet the needs and aspirationsof socially isolated people over the age of 50,who live in and around Plymouth. The serviceis available to anyone over 50 and aims toreach people who are hidden to society whomay not naturally ask for help.

We offer activities and opportunities to reducetheir isolation, improve their overall healthand wellbeing and increase their engagementwith the local community.

IsolationOlder people can become isolated withintheir own homes. Isolation can be caused bydeveloping mobility problems, bereavement, having a loss of confidence, life changes, or acondition such as dementia.

One in 10 people aged 65 or over say they arealways or often feel lonely - that’s just over a millionpeople. Half of all people aged 75 and over livealone and, at present, half of all older peopleconsider the television their main form of company.

Community EngagementAge UK Plymouth’s unique service develops andpromotes a positive relationship with eachindividual to encourage social interaction andengagement with their local community.

Each person is individually matched witha volunteer befriender who will support themon a regular basis encouraging and assistingthem to take part in local activities andcommunity based opportunities.

Our volunteers receive specialist training andregular supervision to develop their skills andknowledge of issues affecting older people whichcan enable them to highlight any difficulties.

Valuing Lives VolunteersThe volunteer role is to develop and promotea positive relationship with the service usereither at home, or in the local community:(this depends on the activities agreed).

The volunteer also has a role to build trust andcompanionship in this relationship – this is doneby visiting an older person on a regular basis(weekly or each fortnight).

www.ageukplymouth.org.uk 15

Volunteers receive specialist training from theValuing Lives Project team and Age UK Plymouthfully supports the befriender to carry out their roleand meet the needs of the service users.

The Valuing Lives Project team provides regularsupervision and ongoing mentoring to thevolunteer – this facilitates the developmentof a good feedback mechanism to highlightany difficulties that the service user maybe encountering, which in turn willenable early interventions.

Making a DifferenceMs P from Plymouth lived alone and was veryactive and sociable until the loss of her husbanda few years ago. She experienced depressionafter losing her husband and also had a fallwhich impacted on her ability to socialize.

Feeling very lonely and isolated she consideredmoving to warden controlled accommodationas she did not know her neighbours anddesperately wanted to meet new friends.

The Valuing Lives team supported Ms Pthrough this difficult time and helped her gainthe confidence to visit Age UK Plymouth’s localcentre , she is now a regular visitor who enjoysactivities and the company of the new friendsshe has met at the centre.

Bradley Peachey, aged 20, is a Valuing Livesvolunteer who spends some of his sparetime volunteering to support a lady morethan four times his age.

Bradley said: ‘It is very rewarding helpingsomeone who is lonely, not very able oractive to get out and about so they havesome social interaction.

‘I love listening to what she used to do whenshe was younger and I know she values mycompany when I visit her. I’d really recommendthat if you have a few hours to spare to considerjoining Age UK Plymouth as a volunteerbefriender - it is truly rewarding’.

2014 has brought with it a sense ofoptimism and clarity that appears tobe focusing our clients’ minds insurprising ways - many of them arechoosing to put in place funeral plans -and as one doesn’t normally associateoptimism and funeral planning wethought we would share with you thereasons why our clients are choosingto invest in this valuable service.

Earlier this year The Mail published anarticle detailing how the average cost of afuneral currently stands at about £3,400and is estimated to rise to approximately£8,500 in the next 8 to 10 years. Ourclients are telling us that they do not wantfriends and family to be burdened withtrying to find this money, especially asthey are aware that these costs will usuallyneed to be paid long before their estate issettled and any cash freed up.

Additionally, many people plan fortheir funeral in their will, which is often notread until after the funeral has been held.Pre-planning a funeral ensures that youget the funeral you want with the added

benefit of making an already difficult timesimpler and less stressful for bereavedloved ones.

However, in spite of the obviousbenefits, the hardship of recent yearsseems to have made people far morecautious about how they spend and investtheir money, and so discerning clients arelooking for funeral plants that not onlyoffer excellent value, but also represent asecure investment. The funeral plans soldby Richardsons Legal Services areprovided by an established and reputablefirm with an excellent track record, andthe money paid is held in a trust thatcannot be used for any other purposethat to pay for a funeral.

Healthy living

Maintaining a healthy body and mind

It’s never too late to think about adoptinga healthier lifestyle. It doesn’t mean thatyou suddenly have to change your dietand start spending every day at the gym.

Just a few small changes can make a bigdifference – making you feel better andgiving you more energy.

Staying Active

Exercises that help strengthen your musclescan include dancing, gardening and yogaand there are simple exercises you can doeven when sitting down to improveyour strength and balance.

Different activities bring different benefits,so try a variety of things.

Healthy eating

No single food contains everything that youneed to stay healthy, so the golden rule is toeat a variety of foods each day.

Eating healthily doesn’t mean cutting out foodsthat you enjoy, but simply eating some foodsless often or in smaller portions.

Eat different types of foods to vary your dietand try to include at least five portions offruit and vegetables a day.

Research suggests that people who eatplenty of fruit and vegetables are less likelyto develop heart disease, certain cancersand eye conditions.

To help you reach your target of five a day, consider fresh, frozen, canned or driedfruits and vegetables – they all count.

Cut down on salty and fatty foods.

• Salt is essential for keeping yourself hydratedand in good health but too much increasesyour risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

• Saturated fats raise the level of cholesterolin the blood and increase the risk of heartdisease so cut down on foods such ascakes, biscuits, sausages, meat pies, fatty meat and cheese.

Drink plenty of fluid – six to eight cups a dayif possible. This doesn’t have to be just wateras tea, coffee, fruit juice and squash will do

Remember to drink plenty of fluids inhot weather and have regular hot drinkswhen it’s cold.

Fresh home cooked lunches can be

booked at Age UK Plymouth centres and

our coffee shops offer snacks, drinks

and good company.

Fall awarenessThe aim is to get people to put their ‘best foot forward’ bykeeping their feet healthy to prevent falls in later life.

It is important for everyone to keep their feethealthy in order to maintain mobility andindependence throughout life.

Foot conditions can result in foot pain, which in turncan cause problems with balance, walking and sensationin the feet – all of which can lead to falls.

About one-third of people over 65 will fall in a year, risingto approximately half of all those aged 80 and over.

There are lots of things you can do to help prevents falls andkeep feet healthy throughout life – from simply havingregular foot checks to wearing well – fitting shoes.

Avoiding falls at homeTips for preventing falls at home include:

• Mopping up spillages straight away• Removing clutter, trailing wires and frayed carpet• Using non-slip mats and rugs• Using high-wattage light bulbs in lamps and

torches so you can see clearly

• Organising your home so that climbing, stretching andbending are kept to a minimum

• Not walking on slippery floors in socks or tights

• Not wearing loose-fitting, trailing clothes thatmight trip you up

• Wearing well-fitting shoes that are in good conditionand support the ankle

• Taking care of your feet by trimming toenails regularly, using moisturiser and seeing a GP or chiropodistabout any foot problems

Age UK Plymouth provides a reasonably pricedchiropody and footcare service.

Strength and balance Doing regular exercises to improve your strength andbalance can help reduce your risk of having a fall. This canrange from simple activities such as walking and dancing tospecialist training programmes.

Exercise classes are available to suitall abilities at Age UK PlymouthActive Ageing centres.Contact 256020 for more details.
