GOINGBEYOND BORDERSFOR HIGHER LEARNING
Sheshan International Golf Club has recently embarked on a
revolutionary new endeavor with one of our prestigious sister
clubs. This initiative is so unique and ground-breaking that
it may one day change the perspective of training and staff
motivation in the golf industry. The main aim of implementing
this exchange program is to firstly engage our own staff and
secondly, enhance the quality of our crop of caddies as we
open their minds to different cultures and experiences.
From the 21st to 28th of February, Sheshan cordially
welcomed the Caddie Master and three ‘Golden Caddies’ from
our sister course, Nine Bridges, for a week of insight into the
art of caddying and training. All three girls were impressive
right from the moment they stepped into our premises and
remained so till the day they departed. Their unique sense
of style, mannerisms, etiquette and customer service was
definitely of a higher, much more sophisticated level. As such,
the week-long training was extremely useful.
Our Golf Operations Manager, Amy Huang, made sure that
our Assistant Caddie Master, Jeffrey Gao and our respective
caddie leaders were all able to receive the most out of this
experience. She meticulously listed important questions
about the culture and art of caddying at Nine Bridges and
their traditional customs when it comes to customer service
customs to be answered during the first day of knowledge
sharing meetings. Through these meetings, both parties spent
an extensive amount of time out on the course sharing training
and caddying techniques and formed such a strong bond that
by the end of the week, all were as close as family members.
As part of our ‘Reciprocal’ training, our team members
travelled to Jeju Island, South Korea from the 7th to 13th
of March for a return visit. Jeffrey and our caddie leaders
were able to personally experience the entire culture of Nine
Bridges from the facilities to the service standards. They
were all equally impressed by the caddies’ focus and strong
determination to offer a high level of service to the golfers. They
were, however, most impressed and admirable of the ability
for a caddie to serve four golfers at a time and yet still be able
to maintain that high level of service. Such an opportunity to
travel not only out of Sheshan but out of China, only serves to
benefit our caddies as they are able to see and experience for
themselves the high levels of service that can be experienced.
Their overall experience will serve as an added motivation and
incentive for them to not get complacent and always strive to
push the bar higher in terms of quality service.
Here at Sheshan, we constantly encourage all our staff
to broaden their minds and horizons while embracing new
learning opportunities. Congratulations to our staff who
participated in this program and we look to you to share your
experiences and newfound knowledge in helping our entire
team grow and flourish.

COURSE MAINTENANCEPLAN FOR SPRING 2011
A s the old Chinese proverb says,
“The success of the entire year’s
work depends on a good start in the
spring”. The same applies to the course
maintenance at Sheshan. Right now is a
very crucial time that will have significant
impact on the quality of the course for
the year ahead. Our current focus of
work falls into the following categories:
Spring Renovation of the GreensRenovation on the greens cannot be
initiated in autumn as the WGC-HSBC
Champions is held in November every
year. Any problems or concerns must wait
until the long, freezing winter has ended.
However, the short spring season, which
runs from April to early June, is the best and
most desired time to play golf in Shanghai.
In order to help our members and guests
make the most of their time and to ensure
that the greens can endure the high summer
temperatures, we will adopt a frequently and
slightly mode of operation during the spring
renovation. However, this will still cause
major damage to the greens and lower the
level of smoothness – We believe that in
order to create the best possible golfing
conditions, some small sacrifices must be
made. This series of green renovation work
is scheduled to begin on April 10th.
Transition of the Cool Season Grasses to Warm OnesIn order to keep the course green all year
round, we must use a variety of grasses
to correspond with the seasons. We have
cold-resistant varieties that grow in winter
and heat-resistant varieties in summer.
At the same time, we hope a new variety
that is resistant to both cold and heat
will soon be cultivated. Until then, it is
our due responsibility to transit the grass
varieties according to seasons. The two
grass varieties actually complement one
another; one wanes as the other flourishes.
The key controlling factor in this process
is temperature. However, early spring in
Shanghai is still too cold for warm season
grass to grow, giving cold season grass
all the advantages in terms of temperature
and nutrient acquisition. That is why you’ll
probably see us verticuting and punching
the fairways or tee box, and lower cutting
the rough in the coming weeks. All these
“damages” are to ensure that the warm

season grass will have chance to receive
enough sunshine, fresh air, and absorb
enough nutrients during its conversion from
the cold season varieties. It is a tremendous
challenge to control the amount of damage
sustained by the greens as well as to
determine the proper timetable for this kind
of maintenance work to be performed.
We will try our best to minimize the impact
these activities have on the grass and keep
