TEST YOUR REACTIONS! You’ve probably been told that your brain is at its sharpest when you are young. This is a
real fact and the things you learn now will remain with you a lot longer than if you try to
learn them later on. Actually, if your age is between 16 and 22, you’ve already past your
prime learning time. Young children - pre-school and primary absorb vast amounts of
knowledge and can retain it for many years. If you learnt your times tables when you
were 5 or 6, you will still know them without any hesitation.
You can test this ‘young brain’ theory by taking the reaction test in the link below. Check
out your own reaction time five or six times and record the results. Then ask a parent or
even a grandparent to do the same test and compare their times. You could even ask
them to try again after they’ve had an alcoholic drink!
If you have recently passed a driving test you will likely know the thinking and stopping
distances for a range of different speeds – these are actually based on a reaction time of
about 0.7 seconds, or 680 milliseconds to be more precise, which is really quite slow.
Calculate your thinking distance at 60mph, or 100kph, and compare it with that of an
elderly person who still drives based on this reaction test.
Are you still keen to travel with them as a passenger?
LOOK FOR BUSINESSES...
We have also had instruction for businesses...
“...broaden their outlook and get something in their hand, an additional course. Do some in the evening, some in work time, paid, at the end of two years, a diploma or certificate in their hand and it actually helps them in their work.”
LOOK FOR STUDENTS...
The example we have been set, is to continue to
study after leaving school…
“...in view of young people having some committal. He speaks about being trained in view of a lifelong objective.” “ Young people should do postgraduate studies...I’m going to enforce it”
SALES & MARKETING DIPLOMA — LEVEL 3
‘It’s a course that I am more than happy to have begun, having been very hesitant to start before. Now I have started, it has proved to be extremely useful, and compared to Level 2, it puts you in touch with more real life selling not just theory (it covers both aspects). As you gradually follow through and make progress, you learn the most important aspects throughout the sales process. I can only highly recommend this course to any young enthusiastic person that has the desire to take up a sales role when they start work. Having now been at work for a year, I have focused on using the attributes learnt from the course in the sales process. I have clearly noticed the difference in my experience and knowledge of sales in the workplace and have
gained immensely.’
From a CAP Student who has carried on studying with Babington College.
‘REMEMBER...IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE !’
Just a little tip for those studying Accounts and trying to remember when to Credit and
when to Debit. (I struggled with this for years until the light dawned -Ed)
The above quotation reminds us that you must Credit the giver and Debit the receiver!

APPRENTICESHIPS UPDATE
From a Government perspective, the apprenticeship scheme is still very much on the agenda with all major political parties supportive of the funding provision and the targets for apprentices in England. There has been a change of personnel in the Department of Education with Anne Milton, MP for Guildford announced as the replacement for Robert Halfon as Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills. The newly commissioned Institute for Apprentices (IFA) is still continuing its management of the programme in England
We are pressing ahead with our plans to maximise this excellent opportunity for funding and have been in further talks with Babington College who have submitted a schedule of courses available to us. Babington concentrate on training for business and professional skills and we have selected a few courses at a range of skills levels which seem to be the most applicable. However, we may also be able to recommend some courses for practical subjects or individual employers could contact local providers. Further details will be circulated as soon as possible.
These plans are mainly for England but we are investigating the possibilities for our students and/or businesses in the other parts of the UK. Further details on this will follow.
So the call to action right now is: Schools and Academic Care Teams:
Ensure you have the information available to assist school leavers in making decisions about their options for further learning appropriate for their new employment including details of the apprenticeship courses Babington can provide.
School Leavers: Review the course information for Apprenticeships along with other postgraduate routes and discuss with your future employers. Decide – Enrol – Start! Delay is not an option.
Employers: Discuss postgraduate study with your new entrants – we recommend that this is included at interview stages as a matter of course. Seriously consider the apprenticeship option as this can provide up to 100% funding plus a further grant of £1000 for apprentices starting before their 19th birthday.
Anne Milton, Government Minister, in a recent speech, disclosed the following comment:
… But I worked in the NHS for 25 years. I have four children, aged between 20 and 32. Three went to university, my youngest is still at university. And interestingly, probably the brightest of my four children decided not to go to university, sorted herself out an apprenticeship and has done very well through that route.
