COMMON OPPONENTS• Texas A&M and UCLA have faced four common opponents in 2015:

Georgia, Baylor, Kentucky and TCU.• A&M is a combined 4-2 against the four common opponents with two

wins against Baylor and a victory against both Kentucky and TCU. A&M also suffered a loss to TCU as well as Georgia.

• UCLA is 3-1 against the common opponents, with the only loss coming against Georgia at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

TEXAS A&M RECENT RESULTS• In the first-ever meeting between Texas A&M and Alcorn State, the

Aggies shut out the Lady Braves, 5-0, in the NCAA first round.• After winning the first two doubles matches to be completed, Stefania

Hristov and Rutuja Bhosale both won, 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 6 and 3 singles respectively, to give A&M a 3-0 lead.

• The match-clinching point was simultaneously in progress on courts 2 and 5, with Saska Gavrilovska officially clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 and Eva Paalma immediately following with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 to close out the 5-0 win.

• In the second round, the Aggies avenged a 4-2 home loss to TCU in the second match of the season which kept A&M from advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, with a 4-0 victory.

• A&M won two of three doubles matches and got straight-set wins at Nos. 4-6 to clinch the victory.

• Stefania Hristov is a combined 4-0 in NCAA tournament play this year. Bhosale, Deheza and Gavrilovska are all 3-0.

• The only loss suffered in the first two rounds was Paalma and Pierson’s 8-4 setback to TCU’s 30th-ranked Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan at No. 1 doubles.

TEXAS A&M IN THE ITA RANKINGS• Texas A&M entered the NCAA tournament ranked 10th, marking the

fourth consecutive week and the fifth time this year the Aggies have been ranked in the top 10.

• The Aggies were No. 10 in the preseason ranking released Jan. 6. It is the second highest preseason ranking in school history.

• A&M reached a season-high No. 7 ranking on April 14, jumping three spots following a week in which the Aggies defeated No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 Vanderbilt and No. 21 Kentucky in consecutive matches.

• After having played only four matches and going a 2-2 with the biggest win being a season-opening victory over No. 70 North Texas leading into the Feb. 24 first computerized ranking of the season, the Aggies dropped out of the team ranking for the first time since March 10, 2010. A&M also was unranked the following week (March 3, 2015) before returning to the Top 75 on March 10, coming in at No. 46.

• Sophomore Rachel Pierson entered NCAA competition ranked a ca-reer-high and team-best No. 26 in singles.

• Pierson and freshman Eva Paalma are No. 13 in doubles, marking the highest ranking by an A&M doubles team this season. Pierson also is ranked 45th in doubles with junior Ines Deheza, although the two haven’t played together since Feb. 12 against UT Arlington.

• Sophomores Saska Gavrilovska and Rutuja Bhosale are ranked in sin-gles at Nos. 54 and 66, respectively.

• Deheza and junior Stefania Hristov are No. 39 in doubles and have been ranked as high as No. 16 (March 24).

THREE AGGIES INVITED TO NCAA INDIVIDUALS• Texas A&M’s Rachel Pierson, Saska Gavrilovska and Eva Paalma have

been selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Individual Championships, May 20-25 at Baylor University’s Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.

• Pierson, a sophomore transfer from the University of Virginia, is making her first appearance in the singles tournament and will be competing in her second consecutive NCAA Doubles Championship, having been a

No. 5-8 seed with Cavaliers partner Julia Elbaba as a freshman in 2014. The UVA duo suffered a first-round 6-3, 7-6 (8) loss to Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz of USC in Athens, Ga.

• Gavrilovska, a sophomore from Serbia, will be competing in the singles tournament for the second consecutive season and will become only the second A&M player to compete in the prestigious event as both a freshman and sophomore. Former Aggie standout and A&M’s only four-time NCAA singles participant Nazari Urbina is the only other A&M player to have competed in singles in each of her first two years.

• Sophomore Rutuja Bhosale has an outside chance of making the singles tournament as the sixth alternate.

• All matches will be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.

• This is the sixth consecutive year and 14th time overall A&M has been represented in the singles championships. A&M players are a combined 13-17 in NCAA singles matches since Kim Labuschagne became the first Aggie to compete in the postseason event in 1987.

• Labuschagne and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar are tied for the best finish in school history, reaching the quarterfinals in 1987 and 2012, respectively.

• A&M is represented in the doubles tournament for the fourth consecu-tive year and the 15th time overall.

• Aggies are a combined 2-15 in NCAA doubles matches since Labuschagne and partner Karen Marshall along with the A&M duo of Vanne Akagi and Gaye Lynne Gensler first represented the Maroon and White at the 1986 NCAA Doubles Championship.

• Only Jessica Roland and Helga Vieira (2004) and Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster (2006) have reached the round of 16.

• Last year, all three A&M entries were eliminated in the first round, with Gavrilovska and then-senior Cristina Stancu each suffering opening-round losses in singles, and Stancu and partner Stefania Hristov also suffering a first-round loss in doubles.

PASSING SHOTS• A&M is one of five teams to have both its men’s and women’s tennis

teams in the top 10 in the ITA rankings, joining Baylor, Georgia, USC and Virginia.

• A&M is one of seven teams to have both its men’s and women’s teams in the NCAA round of 16: Baylor, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC and Virginia.

• A&M is 13-5 against ranked opponents, including four top-10 wins.• In dual matches only, the Aggies are a combined 76-41 (.650) in singles

and 34-18 (.654) in doubles.• Sophomore Rachel Pierson was named the ITA Texas Region Player to

Watch.• A&M is 10-0 when No. 2 singles wins.• A&M went 9-0 at No. 4 singles when playing at home.

TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH HOWARD JOFFE, 4TH SEASON

Howard Joffe (pronounced JOFF-ee), one of the bright-est young collegiate tennis coaches in the country, is in his fourth season at the helm of the Aggies, having been named the Texas A&M women’s head tennis coach in July 2011.

Joffe, 83-22 (.790) at A&M and 131-60 (.686) in the eighth year of his head coaching career, instantly trans-formed the Aggies from pretender to contender. In his in-augural season at Texas A&M, the Aggies were No. 17 in the

final rankings with a 19-6 record after advancing to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Championship. It marked A&M’s third highest final ranking in school history and it was the program’s first top-20 final ranking since tying for 16th in 2004.

In only his second season, Joffe’s Aggies shocked the nation by reaching the 2013 NCAA Championship finals for the first time. A&M, whose previous best finish in the NCAAs was a round of 16 appearance in 2004, narrowly fell to 17-time national champion Stanford, 4-3, in the championship match. The Aggies concluded their historic 2013 cam-paign ranked an all-time high No. 3 in the final team rankings with a 26-4 record, marking the most wins in school history.

There were numerous highlights in the Aggies’ 2013 campaign, including setting the school record for the highest ranked win, knocking off two-time defending national champion and fourth-ranked Florida, 4-3, during A&M’s inaugural season as a member of the SEC. The victory snapped the Gators’ 45-match winning streak against SEC teams in conference regular-season, SEC Tournament and NCAA Championship matches combined. The statement win was part of a 13-match win streak, tying the all-time school record for consecutive victories first accomplished in Joffe’s debut season as the Aggies’ skipper. A&M would go on to win the SEC Western Division title and stake claim to a share of the SEC regular-season crown with the Gators and Georgia.

Joffe was honored as the Wilson/ITA Texas Region Coach of the Year in 2014 as the Aggies were No. 9 in the final national rankings with a 21-7 record after reaching at least the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year and for only the third time in school history. The Aggies, who finished fifth in the powerful Southeast-ern Conference with a 10-3 mark, tallied three top-10 victories, including a stunning 4-3 triumph at No. 3 North Carolina, breaking the year-old record for the highest ranked win in school history. Individually, senior Cristina Stancu earned All-American honors in singles, marking the third consecutive year a Joffe-coached player received the distinction.

In 2015, the Aggies were picked to finish fifth in the SEC according to a preseason vote of the league’s head coaches, but propelled by last-match-standing 4-3 victories against both eighth-ranked Vanderbilt and ninth-ranked Alabama, A&M finished tied with Georgia and Vanderbilt for second place with an 11-2 conference ledger.

The Aggies have produced a plethora of team and individual highlights since Joffe’s hiring. Although the team lost, 4-3, to Ole Miss in Joffe’s A&M debut, the Aggies rebound-ed with a school-record 13 consecutive victories, obliterating the previous record of nine straight wins. The Aggies would later defeat No. 6 Texas (April 17, 2012), which at the time marked A&M’s highest ranked win since defeating No. 5 USC in 2004, when Joffe served as an assistant for the Women of Troy.

The Aggies went on to tie for second in the Big 12 Conference behind the stellar play of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, who followed Joffe to A&M from Maryland. The junior went 9-0 in conference matches and 24-1 in dual matches all at the No. 1 line and be-came the first player in Big 12 history to garner both Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors in the same season. Sanchez-Quintanar, who first became the highest ranked player in Texas A&M history when she received a No. 4 singles ranking on Feb. 28, 2012, would go on to become the first Joffe-coached player to earn ITA All-America honors after receiving a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship. She would also become only the second player in Texas A&M history to reach the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.

In 2013 Sanchez-Quintanar concluded her stellar two-year career as the most deco-rated player in Aggie women’s tennis history. After being ranked an A&M all-time high No. 3 in the ITA’s preseason singles rankings in January 2013, the Spaniard was No. 5 in the final rankings, the highest final ranking in school history. The Spaniard, who posted the school’s highest ranked singles victory by defeating No. 3 Robin Anderson of UCLA in the NCAA semifinals and received an all-time high No. 4 seed in the NCAA Singles Champion-ship, and became A&M’s first two-time All-American, finished her two-year career with a .844 (81-15) winning percentage in singles, also an A&M record.

In 2014, a Joffe-coached player achieved All-America distinction for the third consec-utive year as senior Cristina Stancu was a No. 9-16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship and was No. 9 in the final ITA singles rankings.

Joffe has had success both as a head coach and as an assistant coach. Prior to coming to Aggieland, he served as the head women’s tennis coach at the University of Maryland for two years. In 2011, he led the Terrapins to the NCAA Championships, marking the Terps’ first appearance in the NCAA Championships since 2006. Joffe’s squad finished 13-10 and was No. 34 in the final ITA rankings.

Joffe went to Maryland from his first head coaching position at Miami University (Ohio), where he took over a program and within two years led the RedHawks to the top of the Mid-American Conference and their first NCAA appearance in program history. Joffe was rewarded by being named the 2009 MAC Coach of the Year. The RedHawks would also become ranked for the first time in the program’s history.

Joffe cut his teeth at the highest level, serving five years as an assistant coach at USC where the Trojans finished among the country’s best teams every season from 2002-07 and Joffe was a two-time recipient (2004 & 2006) of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa-tion’s (ITA) West Region Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2006, he was the national runner-up for the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year. During Joffe’s stint at USC, the Trojans finished among the Top 11 every season and finished as high as No. 3 in the land after the 2006 season.

While at Miami (Ohio), Joffe recruited the 2009 MAC Freshman of the Year and first-team all-league player in Monica Gorny. His sophomore, Anastasia Dracheva, also earned first-team all-league honors. In addition to outstanding play on the RedHawk tennis courts, Joffe’s squad scored a perfect 1000 on his last Academic Progress Rate (APR) report.

At Maryland, Joffe recruited Sanchez-Quintanar who ended the season ranked No. 34 and defeated Texas A&M standout Nazari Urbina in the first round of the NCAA singles championships. Another Joffe recruit, Jordaan Sanford, combined with Sanchez-Quintanar to end the season ranked No. 26 in doubles.

In each of his first three seasons at Texas A&M, Joffe had a student-athlete earn All-America honors and finish ranked in the top 10 in the final singles. In addition, his Aggies garnered six first-team all-conference certificates in three years, raising his head coaching career total to 11 overall. Furthermore, Sanchez-Quintanar and Stancu were named the ITA Region Senior Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, respectively, while freshman Saska Gavrilovska was awarded ITA Region Rookie Player of the Year accolades in 2014.

Joffe was himself a talented player earning All-America honors at Pepperdine in 1992 and advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. He earned three let-ters before playing on the professional circuit for three years. While he served as an as-sistant coach at USC, Joffe earned his psychology degree at USC in 2006.

Joffe is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa.
