Because of this, art is imperative in education! In an age of cooperative learning, differentiation, and collaboration for student success, art is the only content area large enough to shoulder the burden of cross-content education. It is a path wide enough to serve all brain-based learning and higher order thinking skills. Therefore, it is our privilege and burden as art educators to guide students, parents, administrators, and the community to embrace art as essential for our children and for ourselves as a culture. I have come by this conviction through life as an artist and an educator – working with children to help them achieve success as a person through success as an artist. Their successes breed further success. My vision for art education – and education in general – comes from a heart that believes strongly in our mission; the mission to affect the lives of children. I bring to this mission a gift in organization and motivation, a high work ethic, a dedication to excellence and desire to continue learning in my own field. It has been said of me that I am abounding in enthusiasm and dedication, always reaching farther as a perpetual learner. I believe in students and their intrinsic value as human beings. I believe that each child has a unique expression and I desire to gift them with the ability to express this through their artwork. I don’t expect all artwork to be the same, but all artwork to show the unique character of the child who created it. I believe my greatest impact in life will be through the individual inspiration of each child and the inspiration to help other educators strive to do the same. I aspire to make a difference.

Vision Statement

When looking at Texas art education you must look at the leaders of yesterday, today and tomorrow. We have come a long way as an association but we have a long road ahead. Around tables across the state artists, teachers and those that are both have argued and challenged each other in words, paint, metal and every other media to create a better tomorrow. These discussions have led to action and action to new ways of thinking about art education. Others are taking notice of the results of this action causing an interest in what is happening to Texas art and our students. Yet we will strive to keep pushing, painting ourselves as an association that grows. Our leaders that walk in and out of the studios in our cities and communities, from El Paso to Orange, from Perryton to Brownsville need to continue to recognize the best of our work and help the artists/teachers lead this state in being the best. An active leader and participant in this movement is what the Texas Art Education Association is about. We will continue this dedication to art. As the country strives to live like the artists that make the world a place of wonder, let us give our students and each other that ability. Through a strong leadership and with our association’s vision we will give our students the tools and the ability to pick up a stone and see the wonders of the world. Then they will be able to communicate those feelings and truths to others.

Vision Statement

When I first started teaching, I had no curriculum guide, no department chair, and no art coordinator. I was alone in the classroom and the decisions on what to teach my students was mine to make. I felt very isolated. When I was in college I knew about NAEA but had never heard of TAEA. It would be many years later before I knew about TAEA. As I look back, I regret those years that I taught without TAEA. Once I became involved, I became a better teacher and had a network of creative and experienced teachers that I could turn to whenever I needed help or had a great idea. This opened up my life in a way that I could never have imagined when I walked into that first art classroom to teach 7th grade-12th grade in one room all together. How much more could I have done for and with these students if I had known about TAEA. My reason for running for Vice President Elect/ Membership is to find and reach out to those teachers who were and are like I was. We have a wealth of talent, support, and creativity within this organization and we need to keep it out there, make it easier for new or experienced teachers to be a part of. Not just at a few events, but throughout the whole year. I hope to reach that one teacher who thinks that they are on their own and have no idea of where to turn. I hope to inspire them, as I was, to become a part of this “family” of dedicated teachers who share their ideas and knowledge freely with others.

Vision Statement

I believe every child is an artist and a thinker. My teaching philosophy is to create an environment that builds an appreciation for the Arts and a platform for self-expression. Each person has the ability to express creatively that defines them as an individual. It is my role as a teacher and a facilitator to help my students connect to themselves and to others through the Arts. Arts education is the education of the whole child. Collaboration is vital on every level: From connecting with fellow teachers on one’s own campus, getting to know them, what and how they teach, and adapting one’s own lessons to integrate concepts across the curriculum to reinforce the learning, to connecting with fellow art teachers on other campuses, both laterally and vertically within the district, to support, strengthen and advocate for the art education department. Finally, by connecting with artists and community leaders on the local level, art educators are able to find support for their programs, venues for art exhibits, and supplies for projects, thus creating an arts-minded culture focused on the well-rounded education of the community’s children.

Vision Statement

If you have seen Toy Story II, then you will remember Buzz Lightyear saying, “To infinity and beyond!” To me, this optimistic quote seems to represent the Texas Art Education Association and its members. What we do as art educators makes a tremendous difference far beyond the walls of our classrooms. Likewise, the TAEA organization continues to reach for the stars. I am running for secretary of TAEA because I would like to be more involved in this dynamic organization. I believe that my experience in K-12 classrooms, art teacher training at the university level, involvement with community outreach programs, and collaboration with museum educators makes me an ideal candidate to represent our diverse membership. I also have strong organizational and communication skills. My vision for this position is to fulfill all responsibilities and duties as needed (recording meetings, sharing information, etc.) as well as to contribute innovative ideas and energy to our organization’s growth and success. It would be an honor to serve TAEA members as your secretary.

Vision Statement

The imagination is a child’s most magical aspect, even during the ‘raging hormone’ middle school years. It connects the conscious with the subconscious and empowers them to explore their inner selves. Our students come to us from a myriad of backgrounds and experiences that constantly impact their artwork, often reflecting in part their own culture, surroundings and imparting to us their personal reactions to such things. Nothing is truly devoid of meaning. Everything is a reaction to something.

Those of us who have chosen to teach this level know the importance these pivotal years play in our student’s lives. We connect to our students in unique ways. For some, we afford one of the few opportunities to excel and reasons to stay in school. Our classroom studios often become a haven for our students.

My vision is to build upon the outstanding foundation our previous Middle School/Junior High Division Chairpersons have established. My goals include promoting more participation in Junior VASE and establishing more dialog and connections between middle school and high school programs so that we may best prepare our students to meet their future goals.

Vision Statement

As faculty working in colleges and universities, we are often busy creating and disseminating knowledge and promoting educational inquiry that helps art education students develop critical thinking, problem solving, oral and written communication skills, ethical practice, and professional leadership. To help foster such growth, it is important to guide and inspire students to formulate public responsibility and personal paths by being actively involved in a community of practice. The Texas Art Education Association provides us with a community of practice for our ongoing work collaborating with teachers and students to communicate new tellings in the collective story that is art education.

Our goal of building a stronger future for TAEA requires that we facilitate opportunities for growth, sharing, and collaboration as we rethink the relevance of the arts in society in the wake of the Information Age. Like my predecessors who have served as Higher Education Division representatives, I want to encourage collaboration and communication amongst the higher education members via forums to share our research and teaching. In a state as large as Texas, it is often difficult to bring people together in the same physical location; however, there are many possibilities to also connect electronically. I would like to use technology for the creation and dissemination of information, such as webinars to share research or wikis to continually construct curricula with others.

Serving the Texas Art Education Association as the Higher Education Division Representative would be an honor and privilege. During my career, I have taught art in public schools on the elementary school level, in Maryland and Ohio. I have also been a museum educator in Washington D.C., Illinois, and Ohio, partnering with schools, universities, and community organizations. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Art Education at the University of North Texas and serve as the Coordinator of Instructional Resources for Art Education, the journal of the National Art Education Association. I have been an active member of TAEA since 2006, acting as a reviewer for Trends. Prior to that, I was involved in the Ohio Art Education Association, helping to create partnerships between museums and schools and served as President of the Association of Graduate Students in Art Education and a representative of the Council of Graduate Students at OSU.

Vision Statement

In a leadership position in the Museum Division of the Texas Art Education Association, I will work to support the mission of TAEA and to advocate for the critical role that museums play in advancing that mission. The arts are integral to education; as museum educators, we need to provide effective resources for teachers, to support classroom learning, and to emphasize the uniqueness of our learning environment. In a museum, both teachers and students learn in and through the arts by engaging with original works of art, a real-world scenario where students can apply school learning in an out-of-classroom setting. Learning in museums promotes critical and creative thinking as students generate questions, probe ideas deeply, acknowledge multiple solutions and viewpoints, take risks in personal expression, and reflect on thought and creative processes. In order to ensure that arts learning has a deep and broad impact on education, I envision a strong network of Texas Museum Educators who work together through TAEA to improve and strengthen the support they offer to teachers and students. It is our job to promote the arts in education not only because the arts augment other areas of learning, but also – and more importantly – because the arts offer students opportunities for learning that other subjects do not. We can work together towards best practices for teaching students how to make meaning in, through, and of art while also supporting the efforts of their teachers to incorporate art into the curriculum. Together, we show students that a career in the arts is as valuable an educational outcome as a career in a non-arts profession. Working as a collective through TAEA, we can advance not only the role of the arts in education but the key contributions that museums make to arts learning.

AREA REPRESENTATIVE CANDIDATES

AREA I

Peggy Hockman

I have a Bachelor of Science in Education with an all level Art certification. I graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1976 and began teaching high school. In 1980 I moved to Odessa, Texas and continued my teaching career as a Junior High Teacher. I am now teaching at the Academy at Ector, focusing on ninth grade Art1/Pre-AP Art. I have been a member of TAEA for many years and one of the Area I representatives since 2003.

Vision Statement

I love art and want to present art not only to my students but to the community as well. I want people to understand the importance of art in a well rounded education. Art has always been the source of inspiration for my life and my goal as Area I representative is to share that inspiration with my colleagues. My vision is to create a strong foundation in all areas of the arts and to share that with all I come in contact with. I hope to continue to help in the development of the arts in the West Texas area with a focus on art education.

Vision Statement

As an Area I Representative I would like to continue to develop a strong line of communication between the teachers across our area, so that we will have a support group to help in all areas of the arts. Our area is so vast in some districts there is only one teacher who covers all levels of art education and I want those teachers to be able to have someone if needed. I have always had a passion for the arts ever since I can remember and I have always wanted to be an art teacher. It still amazes me that I get to live my dream and share my dream with all I have the opportunity to touch. I would like for our area to have four in-services a year in developing areas of interest in the arts and for the teachers of our area to get to know each other and have times to share their talents, so we all can learn from each other. My vision is to promote and be an advocate for the development of the arts and art education in the West Texas Area.

Vision Statement

As a prospective Area II Representative, I know from experience that I will be serving the needs of art educators and students in a region of Texas that is dominantly rural in its economic enterprises, and characterized by often vast distances between schools. I will listen to and implement ideas of art educators in our area who would like to propose ways to enhance communication and promote arts advocacy to overcome these challenges. I will: -seek and author funding resources for travel expenses; -help provide workshops for professional development; -create a database of work place locations and email addresses for a listserv network; -develop a website to provide a bulletin board and to digitally showcase artwork of area students; –produce a one-hour arts advocacy program to familiarize administrators with the ways in which the arts can benefit their schools and students and for gaining more money for art programs.

Not only would I like to see district art teachers combine their knowledge but also with all districts in Texas. I can see the importance of programs that would educate the value of Art to classroom teachers, that we are their greatest resource. We need to express the value of Art in teaching Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. There are so many concepts that we teach that include and connect to other core contents. For example, when drawing and using light and dark values we are dealing with shape, form, mass and volume. As a former Area Representative, I worked to bring art teachers together to work and share. I would like to see art teachers working together across the state sharing their wealth of knowledge and experiences. It would help to strengthen all teachers in content and instruction.

I hope to be able to share my inspiration and passion with others, to dedicate myself to teaching and learning, and to discuss, share and make resources available so that we are all able to provide every student with a quality art education.
