Te days ater Tanksgiving havetraditionally been an opportunity orsome anglers to get out and enjoy thesolitude. Many o the locals have either

gone hunting or ghting the mallcrowds withthe wie. I went outto Joe Poolthis year totest the newLowranceS t r uc t u r eScan andget in a ewcasts.

    First, letme tell youthat the

S t r u c t u r eScan is a very neat product that willdenitely help anglers gure out exactlywhat is beneath the surace. In two daysI was able to nd rock piles, brush piles, two sunken boats, and even a sunkentruck! It is ascinating technology that will denitely improve angler success

    rate in nding underwater structure.

Ater a ew hours o testing the newsonar, I decided to sh one o thenumerous boat slips on the lake. As Istruck up a conversation with a manwalking on the nearby dock, I suddenlyhooked up with a our pound bass. Te

man took a ew action photos while Iought and released the sh. On thevery next cast a ve pounder thumpedmy jig on the all so I set the hook andreeled it in. Not only was I excited tocatch two quality sh on Joe Pool, apaparazzi was there to take the photos! It couldnt have been scripted any betterin ront o an audience. I can imagineMichael Iaconellis eeling as he caughthis limit on the Alabama River in ronto a crowd o ans on the dock.

Te man was certainly thinking I was somesort o pro, but I explained that this waspretty rare and doesnt happen everyday.

As I soon learned, he was originallyrom South Korea and taught physics at

    encounter with mec e r t a i n l y

sparked his interest in bass shing, andas a result, we may have a new angleramongst our ranks soon.

As we begin to understand the

    strategies, techniques, and

    formulas for success in Bass

Fishing, one thing always seems to

    interfere with our success.

    Lct; Wh t stt?

    Regardless if youre just a

novice or a seasoned competitive angler,

understanding where and how to locate

sh has just as much effect on your

success as what lure you decide to throw

    that day.

There are a couple of particular

    structure patterns that will typically

produce anytime of the year regardless

of weather, season, or lake condition.

Docks and Rocks are the old standby when

it comes to consistency in locating the ever elusive

Largemouth Bass. Every reservoir and lake has one or the

other if not both, and at certain times can produce huge

    sh as well as quantity.

Rocks, commonly known as riprap on most shing

report sites, are used as feeding grounds due to the algae

build up and seemingly dark places for a forage sh to hide.

The long span of riprap along bridges and breakwaters

also provide great living spaces for a Largemouths

favorite food. The crawsh (craysh) depending on what

part of the country youre from provide the high protein

Largemouth Bass need to grow and help maintain their

    daily metabolic rate.

When approaching rocks around breakwater or

riprap along a bridge or roadway, always consider what

the bait sh are doing. Look for shad in an along the rocks,

and match the size with your favorite crank, or blade size

    on your spinnerbaits.

Instead of throwing to the rocks, try and position

yourself parallel and work down from two

feet off until you locate the spot the sh are

    holding or feeding at.

Plastics are productive as well, and

may produce betterquality of sh once youlocate them with a crank or blade. One of

my favorite baits for fall and winter riprap

shing is a black/blue nesse jig with a small

black/blue craw trailer or beaver type.

When the sun is up and bright, try

a series of creature baits in watermelon red

Texas rigged on ounce bullet weight.

Docks are the other structure pattern

that may help you put a few sh in the sack. Typically

docks have long been stereotyped as a ipping or pitching

pattern. Although this technique is very successful, dont

give up on your spinnerbaits under docks this time of

    year.

When breaking down a dock, there are a few things I look

    for.

Water depth under and back of the dock, with1.

    deeper water behind me

Is it near a creek, 200 yds or less2.

    Looking around the lake

to nd docks to sh can be

confusing at best. One thing to

    understand about dock shing,

    not all docks are productive!

There maybe one or twoproductive docks in a set of ten,

and the reason for that is usually

one of the four points mentioned

    previously. Once you have

    eliminated non-producing docks,

    take a systematic approach to

shing them. Everyone has their own ideas on how to

approach a dock and once you nd a productive dock

youll probably catch a few anyway.

My approach is to get as much out of a productive

area that I can , and to do so you will need to cover asmuch of the dock as possible.

A dock gives the sh the advantage; it has four sides of any

post to stage on. It has the full length of cover to suspend

under, and if you have a good hook set on a decent sh it

has the ability to wrap you up. With that being said, its a

    great pattern to sh.

When shing docks on bright sunny days, sh as

far back as you possibly can in the center of the dock. Try

and work the inside of the post from back to front. This

is when you will cover as much shaded area as possible.

Largemouth Bass under docks during this time of day have

a tendency to suspend if the water depth is deep enough.

During high pressure days, bass will hold very

tight to cover. This takes a little more patience covering

each side of the post or the bottom of the bulkheads in the

back. If, however you nd that sweet spot Hang On!

When the bass seem to be active and you notice shad or

baitsh in and around the dock, try a spinnerbait and see if

you can get it to bump a post or two during the retrieve. This can trigger sh to feed that are waiting to feed on the

    school of baitsh.

As always, be safe on the water, think conservation and

    introduce someone to shing!!!

Hes internationally known as the guru otopwater shing, but when bass arent inthe mood or a Pop R or Zara Spook, ZellRowland doesnt hesitate to tie on big plastic. As good as he is at sashaying surace baits, this veteran exaspro loves over-sized plastic worms that he can cast, pitch, orip.

Not surprisingly, during more than a quarter-century o tournament competition, Rowland has analyzed worm shing the same way hes done with topwaters. Heuses specic worms or dierent water and cover conditions, and hes been known to glue two worms together to createthe right size or the bass he was ater. Tis, in act, is how

Rowland created YUMs popular Zellmander Lizard.Larger plastic worms are usually good choices when

youre looking or big sh, acknowledges Rowland, but I think theyre also eective whenever you need

a slower, more natural presentation, especially inthick cover. Yes, a big lure does increase your chancesor a big bass, but big worms and lizards aregood or just regular shing too because

you can sh them so many dierentways.

    Larger plastic worms

    are usually good choices

    when youre looking or

    big sh

Overall, big worms in the 10 to

12 inches sizes, and even larger, arebecoming more popular as anglers

    9

  • 8/14/2019 Texas Bass Fishing Mag Winter 2009

    10/20

realize how eective they really can be. A lot o manuacturersare producing them now.

Rowland divides big worms into our basic categories, each determined by the lures tail design. Tese includeswimming tails, ribbon tails, straight tails, and paddle tails.Te actual length o the worm you choose is not as critical, hebelieves, as using the proper tail design.

For instance, he believes the very best time and placeto use a swimming tail worm a worm with a large curl in thetail is when youre shing around the edges o bushes, docks, and weed lines. Tis is also a good choice or dingy or muddyconditions because o the amount o water it moves. Like the name implies, this style o plastic worm iseective when you swim it with a very slow retrieve that keepsthe tail moving, Rowland explains. Ill peg a 1/8-ounce sinkerahead o it and swim it over or sometimes through the cover, but its not the right choice or penetrating thick cover becausethe tail cant vibrate then, and thats what makes this style oworm eective. You need to eel the tail vibrating as you reel.

Oten, you wont even eel the strike with this type oworm because a bass usually hits it while swimming toward you.

Youve got to watch your line careully, because when a bass doessuck it in, the line simply goes limp and the tail vibra tionstops suddenly.

When casting tosubmerged cover or whenshing in vegetation, the exas pro suggestschanging to a ribbon taildesign, probably themost popular o all big worm designs. Tis isa worm with several

smaller curls in thetail so it works wellnot only in stainedor muddy waterbut also

around bushes because it penetrates more eectively than theswimming tail design.

I like to sh this type o worm with short hops alongthe bottom so I can still take advantage o the tails vibrationsto attract bass, says Rowland, a ve-time winner in Bassmastercompetition and veteran o 16 Bassmaster Classic appearances. One o the most eective presentations or me over the yearshas been to hop this worm into brush, then raise my rod veryslowly to pull the worm up out o the cover, then lower my rod

so it swims right back down into it.

Overall, big worms in the 10to 12 inches sizes, and even larger, arebecoming more popular as anglersrealize how eective they really canbe.

Tis particular worm, usually in 10 inch sizes and exasrigged with a light slip sinker, is oten the lure o choice or nightshing on many exas lakes during the summer months. Teworms action, whether the retrieve is short, deliberate hops ormore subtle crawling near dropos and brush, creates enoughvibrations to attract even the most reluctant bass.

Depending on the water depth, actual size o the worm, and the size o potential bass, Rowland may rig this worm with 17 to 20-pound uorocarbon line, a 5/0 hookand a 5/16-ounce pegged sinker. He pegs the sinker on everyworm he shes because hes nearly always working them in andaround cover and a sliding sinker just increases the chances orsnagging. His two basic worm shing rods are either a 7-oot

medium/heavy stick with a ast tip or easier casting, or a 76heavy action ipping stick.

Rowlands avorite worm presentation is ipping, justas yours probably would be i youd caught 11 and 12-pounderson successive ips as hes done. When he is ipping, he preersa simple straight tail design because hes not looking or action

so much as hes thinking penetration. Tisis a worm or thick vegetation like hydrilla

and miloil where the smooth tail designallows the worm to slip straight throughthe greenery. I youre headed or theooded mesquite and huisache at

Amistad, Choke Canyon, or Falcon, this is also the worm to use.

Surprisingly, a big 10 or 12-inchstraight tail worm isnt that popular, helaughs, but i Im shing really thick

cover, especially like the hydrilla onRayburn or oledo Bend, I don t think

theres a better tail design. With a peggedsinker, it absolutely slides right through

everything. Down in Florida on grass-lledlakes like oho and Okeechobee, it would bedifcult to nd anyone not shing a straight tail

    worm.

Again, Rowland uses a slow presentation when using astraight tail. Te worm alls slowly and attracts bass simply by itspresence, since creatures that size dont all through thick grass

very oten. I the worm does make it completely to the bottom,Rowland may raise it to the top o the vegetation canopy thereis actually airly open water beneath most hydrilla and miloilmats and let the worm all again. He may vary this by shakingthe worm lightly while its on the bottom, too.

    Id been a plastic worm

sherman all my lie, but when thenew tail designs came out, it opened upa brand new world o possibilities.

Day in and day out, I think the very best way to sha big worm is very slowly, he emphasizes, because you dont want to spook any sh away rom it with a sudden jerk orhop. Te bass know its there the second it comes through thecover, and a lot o the time I think it may actually cause thesh, especially big bass, to move away. By letting the worm sit

motionless on the bottom or a ew extra seconds, or by movingit really slow, you can tempt those bass to return or a closerlook and maybe to eat it just because its easy to grab.

Rowlands ourth worm choice is the paddle taildesign, which he also uses when ipping cover, especially lilypads. Because these types o worms do have good vibrationhe wants to take advantage o but not necessarily as muchvibration as a ribbon or swimming tail he uses them in moreopen cover when bass are really nicky.

Many bass shermen who started worm shingback in the 1960s probably started with a paddle tail worm,Rowland remembers. Te rst swimming-type tails or plastic

worms were developed in 1973 and 74 by the Mister wisterCompany right across the state line in Minden, Louisiana, andwithin a ew weeks every sot plastics lure maker in the countryhad some variation o a swimming tail worm.

Id been a plastic worm sherman all my lie, butwhen the new tail designs came out, it opened up a brand newworld o possibilities. Suddenly, we could sh a big ribbon tailor swimming tail worm on the surace like a buzz bait, whichwe still do today over the top o grass.

Te thing to always keep in mind with any o the taildesigns in sot plastics today is taking advantage o whateveraction the tail design oers, because some are denitely better

suited or certain conditions than others.
