blueprints of your ultimate achievements.” — Napoleon Hill

KELSEY BRYANT, MD

As a first-generation Texan, Kelsey has made her way through several major Texas cities. After growing up outside of Houston, she spent four years earning a degree in Nutritional Sciences from UT Austin, and finally made it south to San Antonio to enter the M.D/M.P.H program at The University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio. Between degrees, she was lucky enough to have several experiences traveling abroad in both Europe and Southeast Asia.

Currently in her final year of medical school, Kelsey is applying for residency in Internal Medicine. Though she has ideas regarding the pursuit of a fellowship, she has no definite plans as of yet. As a medical student, she has been involved with The Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics as a member of the Student Advisory Council, as a student leader for an annual Ethiopia Outreach project, as a mentor for UTSOMSA's Veritas program, as well as several teaching endeavors.

When she is not cramming facts into her head or learning how to apply them in a clinical setting, you might find her training for a marathon or half-marathon, going for a swim, trying a new recipe, or plotting some sort of international adventure that likely involves scuba diving. As for what the future holds, ask her after Match Day!

ROBERT (STEVE) URBAN, MD, FACP

Steve Urban was raised on a wheat farm near Perryton Texas,an experience that taught him in so many ways that he’d betterfind another occupation. He attended undergraduate school atTCU, where he was a junior phi bete and graduated with a B.A.in English. Miraculously, he was accepted at Baylor College ofMedicine, joining AOA as a junior and graduating magna cumlaude. He completed his internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern, serving as chief resident under Dr. Donald Seldin and Dr. James Knochel in 1981.

Dr. Urban then returned to the Panhandle to practice internal medicine with a groupwhich included Texas ACP laureate Dr. Ted Nicklaus and former Texas ACPpresidents Dr. Rush Pierce and Dr. Sheryl Williams. Early on, he joined the internalmedicine faculty at the Texas Tech School of Medicine regional campus in Amarillo;he has conducted Friday morning report there for the past 33 years. For 19 years helived the life of a busy private practitioner of general internal medicine, admitting hissick patients to the hospital, seeing patients in the clinic morning and afternoon, andcalling patients and dictating charts late into the night after the kids were in bed. Hehelped correct the grammar and comma usage of hundreds of transcriptionists overthe years. He actually read his consultants notes until the EMR rendered themmeaningless; his greatest triumph was discovering the word “cystoscopy” spelled with a $ in place of the “s” in a urologist’s note. This error did not go unpunished.

In 2000, Dr. Urban joined the full-time faculty of the internal medicine departmentat Texas Tech (Amarillo), where he is now professor of internal medicine and holderof an endowed chair established by his patients. He has been both clerkship directorfor the medical students and program director for the residency (not at the sametime). He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Dean’steaching award (an Amarillo award), the President’s teaching award (TTUSOM-wide)and the Chancellor’s teaching award (Texas Tech-wide). The IM residents andmedical students in Amarillo have chosen him as their outstanding faculty memberon numerous occasions.

Dr. Urban served on the board of directors for the Texas Chapter of the ACP for 5years and was the President of our organization in 2009-10. He continues to serve onthe Texas ACP foundation board. Dr. Urban is married to Joan, whom he met atTCU in a class on Pre-Socratic and Classical Greek philosophy. She was by far thebest thing to come out of THAT class. Steve and Joan have 3 children: David (acomputer programmer in Manhattan), Elizabeth (a professor of early Islamic historyin Philadelphia), and Catherine (a librarian in Amarillo). His interests includeliterature and medical humanities, history (the more obscure the better) andlanguages; if you want to know about Altaic linguistic group or the decipherment ofEgyptian hieroglyphs, he’s your man. Dr. Urban has been afflicted with anenthusiasm for the Houston Astros since 1962 (they weren’t the Astros then); hisenthusiasm peaked in 2005 but flickers on despite every effort by the Astrosmanagement to snuff it out. The Texas Chapter of ACP is pleased to bestow itsLaureate Award for 2014, on Steve Urban, MD, FACP.
