The Texas Medical Board is responsible for regulating the practice of medicine in Texas.

Overseen by 19 members

Employees over 200 state employees

Rules created by the TMB have the regulatory effect of law

As of 9-1-2019 every applicant for a certificate or registration to practice radiologic technology in Texas Must pass the the

jurisprudence exam

Designed to test the applicants’ knowledge of

their legal obligations

The Texas Board of Medical Radiologic Technology

4 medical radiologic technologists who each have at least 5 years of experience as a medical radiologic technologist:

Two physician licensed in Texas who supervise medical radiologic technologists;and

Three members who represent the public.

Continuing Education

AT LEAST 12 HOURS OF CONTINUING EDUCATION MUST BE COMPLETED EACH

YEAR.

Continuing Education

At least 6 hours must br satisfied by attendance and participation in formal CE’s that are designed for Category A or A+ credits of

continuing education by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic

Technologists)

The 6 remaining hours may be composed of self study or courses not approved for formal CE, and shall be recorded in a manor that be can easily transmitted to the

Board upon request.

Continuing Education

You must be able to show proof that these credits were

completed, the Board performs randomized audits of all

certificate holders to determine if the CE requirement has been

fulfilled.

If you have not completed the CE’s or cannot provide proof,

you will become subject to discipline by the Board.

The issuance of a registration renewal does not entitle you to practice in Texas unless the CE requirements have been met.

A false statement or report to the board will result in disciplinary action by the Board

This is considered unprofessional conduct and is taken very seriously.

NOTE: Although the board does require Continuing Education and conducts random audits, the Board does not currently sponsor CE’s for any license type.

If any information changes you must notify the Board within 30 days. Do not wait until it is time to renew.

Changes must be made in writing

The easiest way to make changes is through the Boards website.

Retirement

Regardless of whether you officially retire or not, once you stop practicing for than a two-year period, you will be required to demonstrate compentencey before returning to practice.

This is done through competency evaluations, internships and practice proctors or fellowships.

What procedures are an NCT allowed to perform?

NCT x-ray techs are prohibited from performing procedures that are on the lists of Dangerous or Hazardous procedures set by the Board.

tomography (PET);

administration of radio-

pharmaceuticals; radiation therapy,

including simulation,

brachytherapy and all external

radiation therapy beams including

Grenz rays:

thereof;

interventional radiographic procedures,

including angiography;

fluoroscopy; and cineradiography (including digital

acquisition techniques).

Hazardous Procedures

Note about Pediatric Procedures: Excluding extremities, Pediatric studies must be performed with

radioprotection so that proper collimation and shielding is utilized during all exposure's sequences during pediatric studies. If an emergency condition exists which threatens serious bodily injury, protracted loss of use of a bodily function or death of a pediatric patient unless the procedure is performed without delay, or if other extenuating circumstances deemed by the practitioner exist, a pediatric radiographic procedure is also excluded. The emergency condition or extenuating circumstance must be documented by the ordering practitioner in the patient's clinical record and the record must document that a regularly scheduled MRT, LMRT, RN or physician assistant is not reasonably available to perform the procedure.

What Procedures may I Perform?

NCT’s may only perform radiologic procedures under the supervision and direction of a practitioner and must comply with all applicable statutes and rules under the laws governing the practice of the practitioner.

Part I Summary

Renew your registration every 2 years

Do NOT practice after you expire until you renew

You must complete 12 hours of continuing education within your 2-year renewal period

When renewing you must provide the following information

Information about arrests not previously reported to the Board

Number of CEU’s completed during the renewal period

Updated contact and practice information

Any false information reported to the Board will not be tolerated

NCT’s may not perform Hazardous or dangerous procedures.
