Britrail Pass

www.acprailnet.com/britrailbook

We suggest a railpass as it is less expensive than buying individual tickets each time

you travel by rail. Buy it soon -

You can not purchase it in Britain. Buy it soon as delivery times may vary from

3 days to 4-6 weeks.

Phone• There is a pay phone outside the Lanfranc warden’s office• Unless you have a cell phone with service that allows for

calls from anywhere, the best and cheapest way to communicate by phone is to have a person call you at one of the payphones at a prearranged time.

• In general, pay calls made from the UK to the USA are about twice as expensive than calls made from the USA.

• Your best bet is email or international cell phone service. • Remember, “English time” is six hours ahead of “Texas

time!”Mail• Mail delivery can take anywhere from 4 to 10 days. • Remind those sending you mail from the USA to send it via

air mail, and that extra postage is required. • Mailing anything like books or other packages from the UK

to the USA is very expensive, even when you send it via surface delivery.

Train Travel Tips• London is easily accessible from

Canterbury’s two rail stations (East and West).

• There are usually three trains to London per hour. The trains alternate their departures from the two stations.

• Faster trains take 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to London, slower ones, about 2 hours.

• Trains usually go either to Victoria Station or Charing Cross Station (both are centrally located in London and are connected to the London Underground subway system).

Page 25: Texas State in Canterbury 2007 Orientation II. Otherwise known as……. Good Cop/Bad Cop.

More Train Tips• On your first visit to a particular train

station, pick up a schedule/time table that shows times from London to Canterbury.

• Times are in “military time” (ie. 6PM is 18.00)• The last train from London to Canterbury is usually

around midnight. • Far fewer trains run on Sundays that rest of week• If you are connecting from another rail/tube station

in London, allow an extra 20-30 minutes to make your planned departure time.

• Transportation is timely. If it says it leaves at 18.02, that means the wheels are rolling

Page 26: Texas State in Canterbury 2007 Orientation II. Otherwise known as……. Good Cop/Bad Cop.

Miscellaneous Local Travel

• Bus Travel:– Traveling by bus is usually less

expensive than by train, but slower.

• Taxis:– Lynx Taxis are very reliable. Expect to

pay around $6.50 for service around Canterbury city centre.

• Walk:– Our central location means that you can

easily walk around most of the town.
