Over one thousand children, including pupils from St John’s School and Sixth Form College, Escomb Primary School and Cock-field Primary School are set to benefit from life-saving first aid training thanks to a County Durham initiative.Durham County Council, in partnership with St John Ambulance, has organised and funded the scheme to teach children what to do in the case of an emer-gency.A total of 1,080 children and young people from primary schools to sixth form colleges, are taking part in the training sessions, which cover topics includ-ing: choking, resuscitation, severe bleeding and the recovery position. The training scheme, which was developed by the council’s Safer Communi-ties Team, was originally only offered to secondary schools in the Durham County Council area, but was later extended to include primary schools as well. Steve McCallan, Safer Communities Officer at Durham County Council, said: “Since we rolled the scheme out even further, the response rate has in-creased significantly and we hope to provide the same scheme to many more schools. “There are now 1,080 children and young people, countywide, who will have

the skills to really make a difference in an emer-gency situation and, at a cost of just over £2.80 per student, this really is such a small price to pay to equip people to help save a life.”During the three-hour training sessions, staff will also identify one or possibly two students who could become “first aid champions” for their re-spective school. These champions will then work with St John Ambu-lance to promote first aid within the school and com-munity, encourage others to sign up to courses and be offered support to set up ‘First Aid Clubs’ within their schools. St John Ambulance regional training manager, David Nicklen, said: “While our charity campaigns for first aid to become part of the school curriculum, support like this from Durham County Council is very welcome. “It is helping to create a generation of life savers.”Primary and secondary schools were invited to take part in the St John Ambulance Big First Aid Lesson on Friday 17th June. This was a free, one-hour lesson live on the internet presented this year by chil-dren’s TV medic, Dr Ranj. For more information about first aid training visit www.sja.co.uk, email [email protected] or tel-ephone 01924 262726.

Principal Natalie Davison says the team are very encour-aged by the very positive Ofsted inspection.

College has created “culture of high expectations,” say OfstedStudents at Bishop Auckland College enjoy a “culture of high expectations” which sets them up for future success. That is the glowing verdict of Ofsted inspectors who found that students “enjoy their time at college”.Lead inspector Malcolm Fraser said students rec-ognise the knowledge and skills they are gaining will help them to be successful in their future lives. Ofsted found that the college offers apprentice-ships for learners aged 16 to 18, programmes for unem-ployed adults to help them secure work, and provision in the community to re-engage adults in education. The college was also found to maintain very effective links with employers. The report said: “These links are strong and used well to plan a curriculum that provides learners with good progression opportu-nities into work.” The number of apprentice-ships has also increased for learners of all ages since the last inspection in 2011 – the majority with SMEs who welcome the college’s assistance in meeting their own skills development needs. The report added added: “The college’s mar-keting strategy promotes apprenticeships well. Since the previous inspection, the number of apprentices has increased markedly. The very large majority of

apprentices aged 16 to 18 achieve their qualifications in the planned timescale and almost all remain in jobs with their employer, often gaining promotion.” Inspectors also found that all learners had a clear long-term target to progress to further or higher educa-tion, an apprenticeship or employment, and knew that if they had concerns they would be listened to and action taken.”The overall verdict of the report, which followed a two-day short inspection on 19th and 20th April, was that the college remains a ‘good’ provider.

To further improve, inspec-tors recommended that the college stretch students even further in some activi-ties, including English and maths, to ensure they meet their full potential. Principal and Chief Execu-tive Natalie Davison said: “The staff, governors and leadership team are very encouraged by this ex-tremely positive Ofsted inspection, which confirms we are within touching distance of joining the very small number of colleges nationwide judged to be outstanding providers. The full report can be viewed on the Ofsted website.”

Police have referred an incident in which a teenager from Coundon died as a result of injuries received in a quad bike accident to the Independ-ent Police Complaints Co-mission (IPCC). The incident took place in Ingleton near Darling-ton on Tuesday afternoon after a quad bike had been reported stolen from a property in Richmondshire shortly before 8am that morning. The rider of the quad bike was 19-year-old Dillon Turner, of Coundon, who suffered from multiple serious injuries when the

bike crashed. He was airlifted to James Cook Hospital where he later died from his injuries.A statement from North Yorkshire Police said: “North Yorkshire Police has referred an incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission after a man riding a quad bike suffered fatal injuries in a collision in the County Durham area.”Mr Turner’s family said they were devastated by his death and asked to be left alone to grieve.

Survey shows potential of heritage-led investiment

David Smith of Ernst & Young, second from right, with Liz Fisher, Jonathan Ruffer, and David Ronn of Auckland Castle Trust.

Heritage-led investment is predicted to create more than 420 jobs and pump up to £20m a year into Bishop Auckland. The prediction comes from accountancy firm, Ernst & Young (EY), which has looked at the potential financial impact on Bishop Auckland of the combined £100m developments at Auckland Castle and the spectacular new Kynren by Eleven Arches open-air night show, which will open on 2nd July. The Field of Dreams report was commissioned by the Auckland Castle Trust and reveals that with the opening of the new Hitachi Rail Europe manufactur-ing and assembly plant at nearby Newton Aycliffe, this area of South Durham is currently benefitting from £340m in private sector regeneration – one of the largest investments of its kind currently underway in the UK.Once the redevelopment of Auckland Castle and associ-ated projects is complete, the report predicts it will put the tourist destination at the heart of a heritage-led investment corridor.Other headline figures from the report, presented to top North East business leaders and decision

makers at a breakfast briefing at Auckland Castle on 16th June, include: £5m-plus total economic impact per annum on the local economy as a result of the changes to Auckland Castle alone; 190,000 expected annual visitors to the Auckland Castle desti-nations by 2020 as a result of the multi-million pound investment; 430,000-plus visitors annually by 2020 drawn by the combined Auckland Castle and Kynren by Eleven Arches projects and other improvements to Bishop Auckland; 107-plus new full time posts and up to 320 additional indirect jobs created in Bishop Auckland as a result of the Auckland Castle projects; 1,700 staff and volunteer training opportunities

created in key areas by the Auckland Castle Trust’s developments; and 7,935 heritage skills and training opportunities produced as a result of the Auckland Castle Trust’s activities.David Ronn, Managing Director of Auckland Castle Trust, said: “There has been a lot of anecdotal informa-tion on what the benefits of these investments will have on the local economy and the people of Bishop Auckland, but this is the first time hard economic data on what those advan-tages will be has come from an independent source. The report shows what we can do, but with people in the wider region getting behind it, it can only go further, last longer and be better.”

ciated and well spent. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the gener-osity of everyone who has supported me over the last year.”Ken Nash served for 18 years with the 17/24s which became the Queens Royal Lancer and was medically discharged in 2010 with PTSD.Once discharged, Ken spent a lot of time seeing differ-ent doctors and trying to come to terms with how his brain was reacting differ-ently to certain sounds and smells. He was referred to a number of different agencies before somebody recommended he visited Help for Heroes at a Recovery Centre in Phoenix House, Catterick. It took Ken three attempts

to walk through the door.“Because it’s not a physical injury and you can’t see anything, it’s hard to admit to yourself that there is something wrong,” he said. “It’s easy to hide away behind closed doors.“I was in denial and then my family broke up and I knew I had to do something.”Since discovering the art class offered at Phoenix House, Ken has become a regular visitor.Mo Usman, Head of Recovery North, said Help for Heroes had been honoured when, in 2015, Mayor Brownson chose the charity as his charity of the year.He said: “I know Lee visited Phoenix House to learn more about how we help wounded, injured and sick veterans and serving military personnel in the area and I like to think that

this experience inspired him to raise much-needed funds for their recovery.“A recent study by Help for Heroes and King’s College London found that, of the 750,000 men and women who served as Regulars between 1991 and 2014, at least 66,000 need long-term support.“We cannot continue to help our heroes, like Ken on their long recovery path without support from people like Mayor Brownson and other members of the commu-nity.”Anyone who served in the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines or Royal Air Force and who needs the support of Help for Heroes at Phoenix House Recovery Centre can self-refer by calling 01748 834148.

THE EU REFERENDUMBritish voters are about to take part in one of the most important decisions taken in this country for a generation. The UK joined the European Union in 1973. Voters are now being asked if they wish to remain a member or if they wish to leave. We asked both sides of the debate to provide the voters of Bishop Auckland with the reasons why they think Britain should remain or leave. Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland constituency writes here for the remain campaign while local businessman, John Elliott, founder of dehumidifier manufacturer Ebac, argues the case for Britain to leave the European Union at the Referendum vote on Thursday 23rd June.

THIS REGION has a once in a lifetime opportunity to escape the failed concept that is the European Union. The upcoming referendum is our chance to make our economy stronger – that’s the bottom line. For as long as I can remember, we’ve been told the EU will get better – that costs and bureaucracy will be curtailed – but that hasn’t materialised. David Cameron returned from Brussels in February with anything but fundamental change to benefit Britain. The EU courts are still in control of our borders and our laws, and the North East will continue to send £496m to the EU every year, instead of spending it on our priorities here. The UK is the EU’s fifth largest economy. If we vote to leave, we can leverage that position to build our economy further. We face a choice between regionalisation or globalisation, and as a strong economy we no longer stand to gain from the “fortress EU” approach in the same way other, weaker economies do. Western economies are no longer the only show in town,

and we should be looking to markets further afield to build relationships, without the prohibitive EU rules to stop us. I have absolutely no doubt that following a vote to leave the EU, our country would secure trade agreements allowing us to supply the rest of Europe. It’s in the very essence of trade agreements that they benefit both parties. German manufacturers need to sell us their Mercedes, BMWs, Audis and VWs, and French producers need us to continue buying wine, cheese and farm produce. Britain is Europe’s largest export market, ahead of the USA. To suggest we’d be risking losing these trade links, the manufacturers that create jobs here and the investment that comes with it, is laughable. This type of scaremongering is exactly the same as when we decided not to join the Euro. As I recall, there was talk of losing six million jobs if we didn’t join. Look what happened there. In some parts of the EU, unemployment is 25% and youth unemployment is more than 50%.

It’s the worst situation since the 1930s and the EU is ill equipped to deal with it. It suffers low growth, high unemployment, a dysfunctional currency and a culture that is not friendly to technology and entrepreneurs. Its regulatory system is based on a slow, broken 1950s bureaucracy that cannot fix problems fast. If we leave, we will save the millions of pounds every year that are diverted for use by the EU. We can use those funds on our own terms to invest in things such as skills and infrastructure. The UK is a net contributor to the EU. That means we pay in more than twice what we get back. By coming out of the EU Britain would not just be able to continue funding its domestic agencies and organisations that benefit from EU funds, but also make a substantial investment in the country. Ask yourself which is safer: a vote for the permanent supremacy of EU law, or a vote to take back control? I know what my answer is, which is why I will Vote Leave on June 23rd and take back control.

John Elliott

THE NORTH EAST is an astonishing place – a cradle of the industrial revolution – we’ll soon be celebrat-ing the 200 years anniversary of the railways. Our coal mines powered the nation, our ships sailed the globe. So today why should people in the North East vote to stay in the EU?A hundred years ago we were trading across the world – we still are. We’re the only region with an export surplus: Nissan makes a third of British cars and exports over half of them; 1,400 companies make up Teesside’s chemicals complex, ex-porting £12 billion of goods a year. So I think it’s worth listening to what the industrialists say. Andrew Witty, the head of Glaxo, wrote to me to say staying in the EU is a platform for greater success. Hitachi says if we left the EU jobs would be lost. And in our area, 5,000 jobs are linked to EU membership. So that’s 5,000 jobs at risk. Not immediately, maybe, but over time investment in new plants would go to other EU countries. Let’s look at who is leading the Brexit campaign: Iain Duncan Smith, the man famed for cutting the

benefits of disabled people, and Boris Johnson, who said we should “scrap the social chapter”. This is why the TUC is warning that if we leave, people will lose holiday pay and employment rights. Young women’s maternity rights will be at risk; people whose firms get taken over or contracted won’t have the guarantees from EU law to maintain their pay and conditions. These privileged Tories and their wealthy City backers won’t be affected – it’s only because of the EU that we’ve got a cap on bankers’ bonuses. Last year I had 10 public meetings on the issue of immigration. People said they didn’t like uncontrolled migration, but where people came with specific skills, like doctors in the NHS, they saw it differently.Let’s remember over half the people who came to the UK last year came from outside the EU and the Syrian crisis which has caused the wave of refugees has nothing to do with the EU. The rules mean every country including the UK can veto new members, so scare stories about Turkey are just that – scare stories. The rules also mean migrants will no

longer be able to claim unemploy-ment benefits on arrival, without four years of contributions. Of course, I’d like to stop zero hour con-tracts and advertising jobs overseas only so that unscrupulous employers can’t exploit migrant workers and push down local wages. But to tackle that we need a Labour government here at home. We’ve had too many cuts in our region: cuts imposed by the Tory government – but Brexit could push us into another recession with a rise in unemployment of half a million to a million jobs, then who do you think will pay the price? As John Major pointed out, far from having extra money for the NHS, Iain Duncan Smith wanted a social insur-ance system, Boris (and Nigel Farage) wanted to charge people; Michael Gove wanted to privatise it. The NHS is about as safe with them as a pet hamster with a hungry python.Meanwhile, the EU has been pumping money into the North East - £11m of grants to Bishop Auckland College, £18m for young peoples’ training across County Durham and – if we stay - £800m for regeneration over the next 5 years. Why put it at risk?

Steven Bennett, aged 30, of Hardisty Crescent pleaded guilty to a charge of driving whilst over the legal limit of alcohol when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. The court heard that officers on patrol pulled over Bennett’s VW Passat on Prospect Road in Crook at around 10pm on the night of 15th May, having observed poor lane dis-cipline on the A689 at Howden le Wear. Bennett told officers that

he had had a couple of drinks earlier at a friend’s house on his way home from work. He failed the roadside breath test and was taken to Bishop Auckland Police Station, where he was fully cooperative. However, the court heard that Bennett had previ-ously been disqualified for drink-driving in July 2009 and he would therefore face a mandatory driving ban of three years.Magistrates also imposed fines and costs worth £386.

Ella will now be in the Miss Sunderland 2017 finals and is looking for sponsors. If she wins, she will be entered for Miss England.

Ella’s road to Miss England final begins in SunderlandA Bishop Auckland teenager has been guaranteed a place in the Miss Sun-derland 2017 finals after placing in the top five out of fourteen contestants in this year’s Miss Sunderland 2016 finals. This year’s final was held at The Point in Holmeside, Sunderland on 11th June where 17-year-old Ella Toole won the “Miss Popu-larity” category. The competition is more than just a beauty pageant and Ella, from Auckland Park, had to undertake many activities to go this far. She said: “The first thing I had to do was get sponsor-ships from businesses. “I live in a very supportive community and have been extremely lucky to have two wonderful businesses sponsor me in CMW Utilities in Bishop Auckland and the Miners’ Arms in Coundon.“Without them, I would not have been able to take part in the Miss Sunderland and District competition.”The competition was made up of many rounds and Ella has taken part in rounds such as “Miss Eco” where each contestant had to wear an outfit made of recyclable materials on the catwalk to promote sustainable fashion, and “Miss Charity” where each finalist had to raise as much money as they could

for the Women’s Refuge in Sunderland, and Beauty with a Purpose. The former charity supports women from under-represented and disadvantaged groups in their learning and seeks to promote a positive attitude in life-long learning, and the latter charity raises money and participates in humanitarian projects across the world. Ella also raised money for her chosen charity, The Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust. To help raise money for these charities, Ella held an event in the Miners’ Arms in Coundon with the help of local band, The Marrs, who kindly agreed to play at the venue free of charge.

A raffle was also held for which friends, family and local business donated prizes. The Durham Ox in Coundon also gave Ella a cash donation for the charities. The student of St John’s School and Sixth Form College said: “I want to thank every single person who donated prizes and money to help me with this event.” Ella won the “Miss Popular-ity” round which saw con-testants’ images uploaded onto the Miss Sunderland District page on Facebook in order to attract votes from the online community. The goal was to get as many people as possible to vote for the girls by liking the image and the page and sharing the page.
