SHOW GUIDE 2015SHOW GUIDE 2015

Welcome to Midland Railex 2015…

Blue is the ColourWelcome to Midland Railex 2015 – our fifth eventwhere we bring to you a variety of model railwaylayouts for your enjoyment. Last year our theme was ‘Military Manoeuvres’ where webrought together the best of the layouts around depictingmilitary activities. This year we move forward in time to 1965and bring to you a number of layouts that show the British Railblue and grey livery that was introduced 50 years ago. The year1964 saw the introduction of the ‘XP64’ coaching stock whichstarted to depict a new modern image for the railways. This ledto the corporate image that was around for a quite a number ofyears causing a lot of different opinions with many likes/dislikesby railway enthusiasts as well as within railway preservation!

Examples of BR blue locomotives from this period can be seenworking on the railway over the weekend with Class 31, 45 and47 all in service.

There are other layouts on show that will hopefully satisfy thosethat are not so keen on the BR blue and grey diesel period withsteam era and continental themes to be seen.

The Midland Railway–Butterley venue offers you theopportunity to view a large selection of model railways, full sizevehicles from various eras and also narrow gauge vehicles. There should be something to satisfy each visitor’s interestthoughout the Swanwick and Butterley sites.

The model railways are spread around the site along with those

Also the Narrow Gauge andButterley Miniature Railway will be running (additional fares willapply).

The organising committee would like to thank all the exhibitors, demonstrators and traders for coming to support us and thanksgo to all the other people that have worked in the backgroundto enable this event to take place.

Alfreton Model Railway SocietyAlfreton Model Railway Society, which has been based atthe Midland Railway – Butterley since 1980, celebratedtheir 35 year anniversary over the 2012 Railex weekendby operating their layout continuously for 35 hours. Thisyear the society layout, Midland Road will be operatingfrom 6am Saturday morning until 5pm Sunday eveningand will be running as the 1960s era. Members’ layoutsand a small sales stand with a full complement of theirpopular electronics kits can also be found alongside thesociety building. All visitors will be welcomed whatever the hour!

Midland RoadOwned and operated by Alfreton Model Railway Society andbased at the Midland Railway - Butterley since the early 1980s.Formed in 1978 by a group of Trent Motor Traction drivers (nowTrent Barton), AMRS built the present layout structure during1982 and has been rebuilt many times over the years and can beseen in its latest incarnation this weekend. The layout boasts four continuous loops, an eight platformstation, large freight yard and small branch line to the fi ctionalstation of Little Happening. Complementing the freight yard is alarge MPD which can be accessed via the back road behind theviaduct or from the branch line. The newest addition to thelayout is a fi ve road MPD and carriage shed serving MidlandRoad station. Small rakes of coaches can be stored and DMUsmaintained here. All work completed on the layout is paid for by kind donationsfrom the public and from our smalls sales outlet inside ourbuilding selling new and second hand model railway items.

Butterley Garden Railway AssociationOur extensive site offers the opportunity to ride bothstandard gauge and narrow gauge lines, as well asvisiting their museum. Smaller scale modellers also havelayouts on the site. Our membership is drawn from a wide range of backgroundsand occupations, which means there’s plenty of advice andexperience on hand if you’re struggling with complex valvetiming or simply deciding which kits offer good value. We haveexperts in modern electronics for those who don’t want theirmodels to get hot and oily. The majority interest are the livesteam locomotives ranging from simple unmodified Mamods tobig heavy Garratt locomotives. Our ‘garden’ layout has been developed over a number of yearsto give easy and enjoyable running. Currently, there are twomain running tracks. The upper level is laid in dual gauge railoffering both 32 and 45mm gauge running, whilst the lowerlevel gives our locos a good run round the 100-yard loop, laid in32mm gauge rail. There are steam-up bays at both levels. Notrack is electric-powered.Work has now been completed to renew much of the original 18year-old 32mm track, and realigning where necessary. Allsidings on the upper level are now dual gauge. We also have anindoor layout, but this has gone into storage at the moment, due to lack of interest and needing some improvements tobring it up to the expected exhibition standards. We have oneof the 16mm Association’s boiler testing kits to assist memberskeeping their locos in good order. In addition to the track, wehave a club hut with drinks-making facilities (i.e. an electrickettle and water), and toilets are located nearby.Members meet most weekends (mainly Sundays) and there isan additional summer midweek meeting on the secondWednesday of the month with the East Midlands Group. Popalong and enjoy the opportunity to run trains and talk trainswith like-minded people, share experiences and swap ‘burntfinger’ stories.• To join the Association, annual subscription is £5.00, plus a

one-off key charge of £5.00. Write to the Membership Secretary, Mike Riley at 7 BagleyClose, Loughborough LE11 5XU, Tel: 01509 554574.

MEMBER’S LAYOUTSVale of Belper Light RailwayThe Vale of Belper Light Railway is a 2ft narrow gauge railwaybuilt on a standard gauge trackbed that closed during the early20th Century. The line is set in Belper although it bares noresemblance to the real Belper in Derbyshire. Pictured in themodern day, the local station features a regular passengerservice taking advantage of the large number of tourists whichis complemented by the occasional train from the Beverley TinMine located along the line buried deep under Bardill’s Hill. Theline still retains many original standard gauge buildings such asthe signal box, engine shed and station building which contrastnicely with the more modern buildings such as the local JobCentre Plus and McDonalds.

BridgefordBridgeford is a small branchline station set in the deepestcountryside. The station incorporates a goods siding whichmainly sees use on market day. Built a few years ago, the layoututilised DCC control which is ideal for the small goods areawhere two locos can be seen shunting simultaneously.

9 Dubmill SidingsO gauge: 7mm scale. Steve Thompson Steve Thompson's model depicts a fictional non-passenger partof the railway system somewhere in the North Western cornerof Cumbria. Even though it is set in England (just) there arevarious reasons which we have made up so we can operateScottish classes of locomotive as well as English based ones. The chosen era is 1967 to 1970 - green and blue diesels, grey, brown, blue and white freight stock and maroon and corporateblue parcels stock – all very colourful!. It has two, independentfiddle yards located to the rear at one end of the layout and weuse one as the 'main-line' and the other as 'the branch'. Thisbranch leads to a harbour which is a few miles away. Trains oreworked into the sidings and are either dispatched down thebranch or signalled into one of the storage siding available. Parcel and van trains also work into the Goods Depot forloading/unloading. A small stabling point and maintenance shedare provided together with a refuelling point. This gives us theexcuse of having plenty of light engine movements in and out ofthe fiddle yards.Baseboards are constructed from 9mm plywood. Plain track isC&L ready to lay flexi-track with most point formations beingbuilt in situ using C&L components. The double slip is aMarcway product. Visible track is ballasted using Greenscene4mm Ash ballast. Track in the fiddle yards is PECO, includingthe two entrance points.Control is DCC using Gaugemaster Prodigy wireless DCCcontrollers with points operated from panel mounted switcheswith Cobalt and Traintonics motors.Rolling Stock is a mixture of ready to run, kit built and kitbashed items. All stock and scenery is weathered to hopefullyprovide a realistic exhibit for your enjoyment.

12 Barton RoadN: 2mm scale, 9mm gauge. Benn Pollard Barton Road is a DCC operated, Western Region triangularjunction layout located in the run down suburbs of Bristol in theearly 70s. This formerly significant GWR junction originallyprovided access for traffic from Bristol Temple Meads and theSouth Wales mainline to the Midland Railway’s Mangotsfield andBath Green Park line, but since the closure of the MR route inthe late 60s, the line was truncated and the track bed now usedto serve a local freight concentration depot, which itself is nowobsolete and outmoded, and in the process of being rundown. Two sides of the triangle are freight only; these converge into aset of exchange sidings which lie on the track bed of the formerchord line. Here, rakes of wagons are split and then shunted tothe various railheads for loading or unloading; a local cementdistribution terminal, a scrap metal merchant which nowoccupies the former fresh produce siding, and van traffic for thegoods warehouse, as well as P-way traffic and passing trainsarriving and collecting wagons for distribution elsewhere.

Express passenger services rush by and goods trains trundlepast on the third, double tracked side of the triangle, this is themainline from Bristol Temple Meads and the West Countrytowards South Wales, Gloucester, and the Midlands.Traction consists predominately of various hydraulics runningalongside peaks, class 33s, 37s, 47s, local DMU services as wellas the odd interloper, plus a 6-car WR Blue Pullman set recentlytransferred from the Midland Region.

13 Kytes Lights & Model Enhancements4 Westingway, Aldwick, Bognor Regis, West Sussex PO21 2XTTel: 07973 197787, Email: [email protected] Lights, provide specialist lighting systems for most of thesmaller scales including their latest 1.35mm ‘flat light’ designedspecifically for N scale. Lighting kits available include rollingstock, street lighting, and a host other applications.

14 Aylett EndOO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Soar Valley MRC Aylett End is based on a Southern Region branch line terminus, set in the British Rail era in the late 1950s/early 1960s aroundthe Ashford area in Kent - the heart of the Garden of England.Passenger traffic is mainly push-pull with local connectingservices, while incoming freight trains bring coal for localindustry and domestic use, and hops to breweries. Outgoingfreight trains take industrial goods to London and Dover, as wellas general parcels, fruit and vegetables.

16 Victoria RoadOO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Bradford MRC Victoria Road is based on historic Saltaire on the ex MidlandRailway line north of Shipley, heading towards the famous Settle& Carlisle route. Many of the buildings and scenery are modelledon those at Saltaire and Shipley, but because of size constraintsthe layout had to be “shrunk” somewhat and those who knowthe area may recognise many of the features. The time period modelled was planned to be the 1950s/1960s,but Victoria Road can be caught up in a time warp where stockcan appear from other periods to allow club members to runwhatever period they prefer. Look out for period local vehiclesas well as a wide variety of wildlife!

22 Loughborough MidlandOO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Dave Tooley (Ivanhoe MRS) Loughborough (Midland) is a factual location on the Midlandmain Line, featuring the station buildings as at the turn of thecentury (2000). Although there are now three platforms, themain buildings have little changed in over 100 years.

The layout covers the area between the Nottingham Road andMeadow Lane road over bridges, with a backdrop of the Brushworks overlooking the lines at the station end, whilst newdevelopments have grown up towards the Meadow lane end.The new rail access link to Brush traction, put in place to allowdirect access to the national network for the delivery of theclass 60 fleet and subsequent contracts, gives added interest.Similarly, Loughborough yard which today is overgrown andunused, is shown much as it was when ARC brought aggregatesfrom the nearby quarry at Shepshed by road for onwarddelivery by rail.Great care is taken to ensure all trains and movements areprototypical of the line. Some of the stock may be “out of thebox” but closer inspection will show much added detail, withscratch and kit built items forming several rakes. We have chosen three loosely classified periods for the layout, being “The Blues” (1980s), “Sectorisation” (1990s) and“Privatisation” (2000 onwards).More information is given on the layout ends and the operatorswill attempt to answer any questions.

27 Albert RoadOO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Martin Morris Set on the Western Region of BR in the early 1970s, the layoutdepicts a locomotive depot loosely based on the service area ofOld Oak Common. The layout has three levels – the top levelfeatures a street scene with houses and shops to hide the fiddleyard, the running lines are on the middle level and an inclinedroad links to the bottom level. Albert Road is displayed with fullsize replica nameplates of a Western, a Warship and a Class 47.

32 Gamle CarlsbergOe: 7mm scale, 16.5mm gaugeThe model shows the old Carlsberg brewery in the early 1930swhen the rail system there was probably at its zenith. It ispresented theatrically in a box so that the viewing angles andlighting can be controlled effectively. It has a simple track planinspired by the work of Gordon Gravett, but it has a sting in thetail – there is no run-round!We operate from the front because we enjoy talking to people –please ask the operators if you have any questions, they maynot know the answer but they know a man who does, probably!

33 IndustrivejHO: 3.5mm scale, 16.5mm gaugeIndustrivej represents the end of an freight only branch lineserving a variety of industries near one of the larger Danishtowns in the mid 1990's. It was inspired by a number of visits toDenmark, although research was mainly done using GoogleEarth to view this type of area in Naestved, Esbjerg,Copenhagen and Odense. The area portrayed features a scrapmetal processor, a warehousing company and an animal feedsdistributor, all typical Danish industries and all served by rail. The branch has been closed just beyond the level crossing butthe section modelled is still very much in use, I like to think thatthere are more rail served industries off-scene which allows fora greater variety of wagons to appear.Locomotives and stock are a mix of weathered and detailedready-to-run, kit-bashed ready-to-run and kit-built. Most locosare sound fitted. The buildings are mostly scratch-built or kit-bashed followingDanish prototypes and the ground cover is the dust from anelectric tile cutter, drying and fixed with dilute acrylic varnish.Foliage is mostly static grass from the usual makers. The track is Peco Code 70, ballasted using Woodland Scenicsfine ballast and medium radius points which I think give arailway-like look to a small layout. Control is DCC using an NCEPower Cab, and points are controlled by a small traditionalcontrol panel.

34 HavnegadeHO: 3.5mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. David BeightonHavnegadeis based on ideas from visits to Northern Jutland inDenmark. The area modelled is just part of the harbour andfeatures a roundhouse and a small ferry. The curved line whichdisappears behind silos at the right hand end of the layout goesto other dock areas, and the line leaving beneath the bridge atthe left hand end heads to the main station. The layout can be operated in two different eras with someminor changes to scenic accessories – allowing both steam anddiesel locomotives from the late 1960s to be used, oralternatively newer stock from the early 1990s. Operation isdigital and many of the locomotives have sound modules.

36 PrinshavnHO: 3.5mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Dave BushPrinshavn is a small harbour typical of many that could befound around the coast of Denmark from the 1950’s with theend of steam to the late 1980’s.The loading dock is based on Nykøbing Mors that was servedby a rail ferry capable of carrying just four freight wagons. Theharbour front I took from an old hand coloured postcard ofSvendborg and the way the trains appear and disappearbetween the houses and across the road is from Haderslev. The two separate tracks enable DC and DCC rolling stock to berun at the same time.

Thelayout depicts the routes leading to Solingen, a German townwhich has operated trolleybuses for over 50 years. The trolleybuses that operate on the layout were first producedby Ehiem and then by Brawa and are steered by overhead wires. They have priority over any of the other vehicles running on thelayout, which are steered by magnets which follow a guide wireunder the road surface. There is a service depot for trolleybusesand other vehicles in the town centre, and a large part of theMarket Square contains a fairground.

50 Ripley (MR) OO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Shaun Robson The Midland Railway’s Ripley Station opened in 1889 and wasserved by three branches. The first to open was from themainline at Little Eaton, then in 1890 from Langley Mill, and afurther extension carried the line through to Butterley, howeverthis closed in 1929. In 1930 passenger services ended but theline remained open for goods traffic and a few rail tours untilcomplete closure in 1963.The model is set in the 1960s era, assuming passenger sevicescontinued and the through line to Butterley remained open.Trackwork is Peco Code 100 and operation is DC cab control, with 2 hand held Gaugemaster controllers. All buildings andstructures are scratchbuilt using Plastikard. A lot of research tofind pictures of the station buildings was needed. The signalsare the Ratio 476 kit, and have been modified to suit whatmight have been used if the station had survived.

55 Elmwell Village Depot O: 7mm scale, 32mm gauge. Historical Model Railway Society Elmwell is an O gauge layout featuring a supposed branch offthe Wisbech & Upwell Tramway built to serve the needs of theagricultural industry in that part of Cambridgeshire. The layoutis operated using Great Eastern Railway tramway locomotivesand dedicated passenger stock. Uniquely the layout can berotated to illustrate the same station in the Spring, Summer,Autumn and Winter of its existence from the 1900s to the1960s, with the correct rolling stock and traffic for each period. Spring in the 1900s The track is fully embedded with only the rail tops visible, thepublic road is dusty and unmetalled, the road vehicles are allhorse drawn. The shops are only recently converted fromprivate houses, as was common during the Edwardian period. The coal yard has an early dumb buffered wagon and horsedrawn tip cart; from photographic evidence this type of coaltransport seems to pre-date the use of bagged coal on flatdrays. The goods yard handles the seasonal spring greens andmost goods are transported in open wagons. The goods office is freshly built and sports GER notice boardswhilst the passenger waiting shelter is in the early fully enclosed

style complete with period posters. An Edwardian familypatiently await their train under the stern gaze of Grandmama. The foliage is in light spring green, the ground is covered byearly dandelions and the fruit and berry trees are in fullblossom. Summer in the 1920s Only the track running along the road is embedded, the restbeing ballasted in the normal fashion. The public road has beengraded and road vehicles are still mainly horse drawn, but anearly internal combustion lorry makes an appearance. Theshops have been modified with the addition of bay windows todisplay their goods, and to combat the high summer sun havelowered the sun shades under which 1920s fashion-clad ladiestake shelter from the heat of the day. In the coal yard the dumbbuffered wagon has been converted to the later sprung type.Coal is now bagged and delivered by horse drawn dray. Thegoods yard is dealing with the summer’s strawberry crop, whichis the year’s most important crop and is now transported, stacked pyramid fashion, in early ventilated vans. Both goods office and passenger shelter have changed littleapart from later posters. The young 1920s family seek someshade under the trees. Autumn in the late 1930s The track is much the same as it appeared in the 1920s and thepublic road has been metalled, tarmacadam perhaps! Roadvehicles are now all internal combustion powered and thenational road signs have made their appearance. The shopshave changed little; the sunshades have been retracted and thebuildings have aged a little, only the posters have beenchanged. In the coal yard the wagon is now a larger capacityseven-plank type and bagged coal is now delivered by petrolpowered flatbed lorry. The goods yard is now loading theimportant late apple crop, transported in the latest LNERventilated vans. The passenger shelter however, has undergonea complete rebuild to the later open style. Winter in the early 1950s The track has been replaced, but this cannot be appreciatedunder the layer of snow. The shops are constructed from BrumTrams card kits suitably modified to suit the period while thegoods offices are based on real Wisbech & Upwell prototypes, one of which still exists at Outwell.

56 Skipley OO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Historical Model Railway Soc. Skipley is a fictional station on a continuous OO layout set onthe line between Leeds and Skipton. It is operated byNottingham Model Railway Society members. The period set isbetween 1955 to 1965 and both steam locomotives and greendiesels provide the motive power. This year will be the last timeit will be seen at Railex as it moves to a new home this autumn.

57 Plemsworth P4: 4mm scale, 18.83mm gauge. Historical Model Railway Soc. Plemsworth is a country station on a large P4 continuous layoutrepresenting the Cheshire Lines Committee Railway and thisweekend it will include rolling stock typical for trains duringWorld War I. It uses ex-GCR locomotives and CLC rolling stockwith a large variety of private owner wagons and additionalmilitary wagons as necessary. The layout was built in the 1980sby the Merseyside Model Railway Society P4 Group and hasbeen restored by HMRS members.

58 Dewsbury Goods O: 7mm scale, 32mm gauge. Historical Model Railway Society Dewsbury Goods is a large ScaleSeven layout set at thebeginning of the 20th Century. It represents Dewsbury MidlandRailway Goods Yard and Town Station with fully protypicaloperation, as it might have been had it been built on theproposed MR deviation avoiding Leeds. The layout is at presentbeing completed by HMRS volunteers and will be runninglocomotives and rolling stock from members and donations.

61 HMRS Membership and Publicity HMRS Museum & Study Centre, Midland Railway Centre,Butterley Railway Station, RIPLEY, DE5 3QZ Tel: 01773 745959(only answered when the Musuem & Study Centre is open) The Historical Model Railway Society is a UK RegisteredEducational Charity founded in 1950 by historians andmodellers to collect and exchange records, drawings andphotographs in the interests of historical accuracy in modelling.

62 John Arkell John is the HMRS steward for pre 1948 private owner wagons. There are many ready-to-run models of PO wagons availablebut as many of these are on inaccurate wagon bodies thehistorical modeller has to resort to kit building and the use oftransfers or signwriting to achieve a more realistic result. Themodels on display are based on many years research into therailways and operators in the area of the South Eastern &Chatham Railway. Most are hand lettered and some arePOWsides transfer sets. John will be continuing to letterwagons during the show and welcomes questions on prototypeand models alike.

63 Milldale N: 2mm scale, 9mm gauge. Historical Model Railway Society. Milldale is an N gauge layout based on the London MidlandRegion, Derbyshire area in the 1960s. Heavy mineral or localpassenger, whether diesel or steam hauled are the usual motivepower on this layout. The line is an imaginary link locatedbetween the Tissington Trail and Caldon Lowe branch, Milldalebeing a small hamlet just south of Hartington. It was built byPeter Lowe and the late Colin Plant in the mid-80s who were atthe time members of the Macclesfield Model Railway Club. Thelayout is on loan to the HMRS by Andy Sollis

59 East Grinstead Town OO: 4mm scale, 16.5mm gauge. Ian White East Grinstead is a Sussex market town that has had threerailway stations in succession, the last of which was built withhigh-level (east-west) platforms on a bridge over its low-level(north-south) platforms. The first station opened in 1855 as aterminus to a branch line which left the main London-Brightonroute at Three Bridges, seven miles to the west. In 1866 thatbranch was extended to Tunbridge Wells and the secondstation was built in a cutting along the north side of the first. The old terminus became a goods yard until closed in 1967.When the third station opened in 1882 there was some localconsternation at it being on a new site amongst the fields to thewest of the town, and the second station did remain open forsome months, no doubt regarded as the “Town” station;although closed in 1883, it was not demolished until 1908. Themodel called “East Grinstead Town” is based on the first andsecond stations, and is operated as if both continued to beused for almost 30 years after the third station opened. Kit andscratch built models depict stock from the late 1840s throughto the early 1900s, thus covering a few of Craven’s 72locomotive classes, as well as the less diverse but equallycolourful offerings of his successors, Stroudley (1870-1889) andBillinton (1890-1904). Today, all that remains of the first twostations is the 1855 building. The lines to the east, west andsouth of the third station closed in 1967, at the recommendationof an East Grinstead resident, and commuter on the line north. However, it’s not all bad news; the line to the south will re-openas an extension to the Bluebell Railway; the east-west line isnow a by-pass taking traffic away from the narrow historic HighStreet, and is named after the resident responsible for lineclosure, as Beeching Way!
