Vybz KartelAdidja Palmer, more popularly

known as Vybz Kartel or Addi the Teacha, is one of the most respected artistes

in the game. Known for his arrogant, complex wordplay, brash swagger and his preoccupation with the ladies, Vybz Kartel is the heir apparent to the King of the Dancehall. He has steadily churned out hits since his days with the Alliance to the present where he is the leader of his own dancehall crew, the Portmore Empire. He scored an amazing seven number one hit singles in 2009 and he has started off 2010 with a bang as his booming hard knock life anthem, ‘Life We Living’, has soared to the pole position of the Jamaica’s Music Countdown charts. He has a virtual hammerlock on the DJ of the Year crown for the second consecutive year running. And this year, he continues to focus

on artiste development, adding new talent to his revamped Portmore Empire roster, which includes franchise hitmakers Blak Ryno and Jahvinci. With the guidance of his business partner, Corey Todd, he is preparing to make big moves in the clubbing arena, leasing a club in Portmore to keep dances and events. He has also continued to keep his ultra popular session, Street Vybz Thursdays, as well. He has also branched off into the corporate arena, conceptualizing a popular alcoholic beverage known as Street Vybz, which has grabbed a respectable slice of the rum market, especially among young adults. As 2010 rolls on, Vybz Kartel will continue to make dancehall history, one breakthrough achievement at a time. The Empire rolls on and on and on. On and on.

Except for her four years at college in the USA, Tevita Skeine has lived all her life in the volatile inner city area of Rose Town, West Kingston. But that does not define her and who she has become.

Despite the many struggles and challenges that have faced her, Tevita, the ninth of eleven children for her mother, is the first person in her family to qualify as an engineer. And everyone is beaming with pride over her success. Prime Minister Bruce Golding heaped praises on her when she paid a courtesy call on him at Jamaica House recently, during which he got the details of her outstanding achievements at Kettering University in Michigan, USA. Tevita not only graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering, she had a 3.66 Grade Point Average out of a total possible 4. This allowed her to graduate with distinction. She was also regarded as an outstanding leader and performed the role of student ambassador for her university. Tevita was elected the Vice President of the International Club, an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers, and was elected into several student honour societies. Responding to the Prime Minister’s question on how she was able to achieve so much in a foreign country, Tevita gave credit to the support from her family. “In my community, my friends are not as progressive and they do not think that there are other options out there. My mother barely finished high school, but she thought that it was best for us to go and she did her best,” Tevita said. She carries the message to her friends that, “Not everybody is going to make it to tertiary levels, but everybody can gain a skill.” This past student of Immaculate Conception High School said that the school also provided an environment that encouraged academic excellence. She was first exposed to Kettering University through a six-week scholarship from the Jamaica Public Service to Kettering University and not having any financial support at home to carry her through four years of college, Tevita ensured that she would qualify for assistance from her school. By her final year, she needed more help and it seemed as if the unthinkable might happen and that she would not be able to finish. At that time, Jamaica Energy Partners was doing foundation work to start operations in her community. The company has a tradition of being an active partner for education and training, and the directors were inspired by her story of persistence

and diligence. During her final year, the company contributed US$14,000 so that she could fulfill her obligations to the university and receive her degree. The result – Tevita completed her studies with honours and returned home. Tevita is highly appreciative of the support from Jamaica Energy Partners, and does not lose an opportunity to encourage young people, including her brother who is a student at Calabar, to pursue tertiary education. Ever the leader, Tevita used her visit with the Prime Minister to lobby for better road safety in Rose Town, noting that children who have to carry water are at risk from taxis that use the community as a speedy shortcut. She welcomed the multi-purpose court and the Denham Town housing estate, which are currently under construction, noting that these would give a major lift and boost to her community.

MATHEMATICSwith Peter Palmer

A matrix is a rectangular array of objects (elements). A matrix which has m rows and n columns is called an nm× matrix and is sometimes written

as nmA × . nm× is the order of the matrix. For example

⎟⎟⎠

⎞⎜⎜⎝

⎛ −=

230

421A

is a 32 × matrix, since it has two rows and three columns. Whenever nm = , that is the number of rows equals the number of columns, the matrix is said to be a square matrix. For

example, ⎟⎟⎠

⎞⎜⎜⎝

⎛=

16

32A

is a 22 × matrix.

If all the elements (entries) in a matrix are zeros then the matrix is called a zero matrix.

Addition and subtractionTwo matrices A and B can only be added or subtracted if they have the same order. That is, both have the same number of rows and columns and hence the same shape. For addition of two matrices the procedure is to add the matching entries in both matrices, while for subtraction the matching entries are subtracted.

Example

Let ⎟⎟⎠

⎞⎜⎜⎝

⎛ −=

Matrix MultiplicationLet A be an nm× and B be an pn× matrix, then the matrix AB is a pm× matrix. Two matrices can be multiplied if the number of columns of the first matrix equals the number of rows of the second matrix. It is not true that BAAB = and in fact BA

might not even be possible. To find the entries of AB we multiply the columns of B by the rows of A . In each of these row by column multiplication we multiply the matching entries and then find the sum.

“A child shall lead them”…students of Immaculate Conception High School and St. Georges’ College have contributed to relief aid for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The students of both schools collected almost $300,000 and handed over the funds to Food For the Poor Jamaica for use in the relief efforts. In a special assembly held on Wednesday, January 27, at Immaculate Conception High School, representatives of the prefect body of both schools, in the presence of hundreds of Immaculate students, proudly presented a cheque to Ryan Peralto, CEO of Food For the Poor Jamaica. Head boy of STGHS, Craig-Anthony Jervis, in presenting the cheque, said, “when we saw the images of the suffering, we were moved to assist; the students did not hesitate at all and made their personal contributions to the cause.” The spirit at ICHS was similar. Head girl, Samantha Powell said, “The girls were all moved to contribute...we did not have any special fund raising activities, e.g. cake sale or concert, the girls simply made their personal contributions once they heard about the drive to raise funds. We too have seen the images of the devastation and could not help but reach out to our

neighbours in Haiti.” Ryan Peralto, CEO of FFP, in expressing thanks to the students, said, “We are humbled by this contribution, we are really heartened by the spirit of care and concern demonstrated by this selfless contribution to the relief efforts in Haiti.” The students are keen to offer a more lasting contribution to the recovery efforts and have expressed a desire to adopt a school in Haiti. Sister Angella, Principal of Immaculate Conception High, revealed that contact has already been made to identify a school for this project. “I believe that our future is safe in the hands of these students, their spirit of selflessness is to be commended,” Sister Angella stated. Principal of St. George’s College, Mrs. Margaret Campbell, was equally moved by the students’ contribution which was initiated entirely by them. “It was their initiative, they wanted to do something to help, and we simply facilitated their efforts,” Mrs. Campbell said. Members of the public may also contribute to a special account opened at NCB by Food For the Poor. The account number is 471043885 and contributions may be made at any NCB branch.

A Career as a Civil EngineerBy Kevin Ellis - U.W.I.

Overview of a civil engineerCivil engineers design things. These might be roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, or water supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in their designs, from the costs to making sure the structure will stay intact during bad weather. This is one of the oldest types of engineering. Many civil engineers manage people and projects. A civil engineer may oversee a construction site or be a city engineer. Others may work in design, construction, research, and teaching. There are many specialties within civil engineering, such as structural, construction, environment, and transportation. Civil engineers usually work in areas that are industry and business centers. Often they work at construction sites. Sometimes they work in places that are far away from cities. Most engineers work a 40-hour week. Some are required to travel.

How do you prepare yourself?

A bachelor’s degree in engineering is needed for almost all entry-level engineering jobs. College graduates with a degree in science or mathematics may get some jobs. A civil engineer must be license to offer services directly to the public. Beginning engineers often work under an experienced engineer to get their required work experience. To teach engineering, a graduate degree, like a Ph.D., is needed. Getting into engineering school requires a strong report card in math and science, and courses in English, social studies, and computers. Also, some schools prepare an engineer to get a job after graduation, while others prepare an engineer for graduate school. It is a good idea to learn about the school before you attend. In a typical college, the first two years are for studying math, science, engineering basics, the arts, and social sciences. In the last two years, most courses are in engineering, mostly in a single branch. Civil engineering is one of the more common branches of engineering. Engineers should be creative, curious, analytical, and detail-oriented. They should be able to work as part of a team. People skills are important. This is because engineers often work with people in a wide range of fields.

Salary Amounts to over J$1,000,000 per annum depending on your qualification, experience in related field and the organization you are working for.

Employment opportunitiesIt is expected that civil engineer jobs will increase in the near future due to globalization and the development of towns and cities. More civil engineers will be needed to design and build things as the population grows. For example, they will need to fix and replace buildings and roads as they continue to become old, unsafe, and worn out. Some job openings will occur to replace those who go to other jobs or leave the labor force. Job openings will also depend on where you live. There may not be as many jobs when the economy is doing poorly. This is because there is often less construction at such times.

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day, and why?

Garcia, 18 – Edna Manley School of the Performing ArtsSure. Yes, I celebrate Valentine’s Day, mainly because it’s the one day highlighted aside from my anniversary, where my significant other and I can reminisce about how we met, how our relationship grew into what we have now.

RoyI think it was all about stealing a girl’s heart and using one day of the year to put my best foot forward, it’s the one day where it’s not that the gift that counts, but how you deliver it.

Sherrian, 18 – Excelsior Community CollegeNot really. Valentine’s Day is a day to show our loved one that he or she is loved that is something that should happen everyday, you don’t have to wait on February the 14 to show that love and affection.

Jason (Frazzle), 18 – Calabar High Yes, it’s a time to remember and celebrate the bond you and your special someone hold dear to each other, a time you openly express your love...

Jhenelle, 18Yes, I do because it gives lovers a chance to express true feelings. I think if it isn’t shown on any other day, Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to express it.

No more Yendi Phillips!

Well, don’t get misled by the title but yes it’s true! No more Yendi Phillips! At least, no more for Rising Stars.

Yendi Phillips has resigned from the show after her two-year reign. If this was the only way for her fans to get close and personal with her by maybe imitating her ways and personality, well I’m sorry, but next time we will be seeing Yendi is on the catwalk, as she’s planning to continue her career in modelling. So, is this good news for Denise Hunt or Rising Stars? How will the ratings of the show be affected after Yendi?

Wasp nabs ‘Song of the Year’ award

Cassia Park aka DJ Wasp continues to show upward mobility in 2010 and was

rewarded for his efforts by taking home the awards for ‘Most Requested Song’ and the coveted ‘Song of the Year’ for ‘Unfair Officer’ at the ROOTS FM awards show and concert held recently at the station’s premises in Cockburn Gardens. Following the formalities, Wasp delivered a fiery set alongside conscious crooner Nesbeth, up and coming reggae singer

Influential and the ‘strong one’ Etana. Then it was on to St. Hugh’s High School Barbecue at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre where the double EME-nominated recording artiste had the hundreds in attendance singing and dancing in unison as he explained why he was the toast of the town when it comes to the ladies. Wasp’s current No.1 hit single ‘Cry Fi Dem’ was chosen as one of the official songs of a US-based Relief campaign for Haiti; the project was spearheaded by musical connoisseur Johnny Wonder.

Lindsay Lohan’s dad vows to take $125,000 of aid to Haiti

Lindsay Lohan’s dad Michael is finally heading to Haiti to help the victims of

the recent earthquake – after dropping plans to travel to the country last month amid fears for his safety. The actress’ infamous dad is eager to join the list of well-known faces who have donated time and money to help stabilize the desperate situation in the ravaged nation. He managed to raise $125,000 in aid to hand out to the survivors of the tremor, but was advised not to travel to the country in January over safety concerns as people fight for food and water. Lohan has now vowed to fly to Haiti next month. “I’ll be going there in about two weeks. I’ve raised about $125,000 in goods for Haiti,” he said.

‘Chris Brown’s violence was unacceptable’ - Ne-Yo

R&B singer Ne-Yo is backing a campaign against domestic violence, citing the 2009 fight between ex-lovers Chris Brown Rihanna as

“unacceptable”. The singer is donating proceeds from his new single ‘Heroes’ to nonprofit organization Respect!, which aims to end abuse and promote respect in relationships. And he spoke out against Brown’s actions when he debuted the track at New York venue Sl last week. He told the crowd, “What happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna was unacceptable, and we need to all work together and make sure it never happens again, to anyone.” Brown was handed a community service order and five years probation after he viciously attacked Rihanna, leaving her battered and bruised last year February.

Alicia Keys married or engaged?

Rumour has it that Alicia Keys

and Swiss Beats are either engaged or married. Not sure of the details just yet but they have been very secretive about this. All we know is that they are both in Hawaii celebrating.

Usher and Chilli back together?

News about the two are circulating that they

are indeed back together again, but don’t just take my word for it! Here is a photo after they had been seen on a date, exiting a fancy restaurant.

Taylor Swift and Cory Monteith a couple?

Country sensation Taylor Swift and Glee

star Cory Monteith were spotted getting cozy at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party and they also had dinner at Jerry’s Deli a couple of days before. Could it mean the two are getting to know each other and may actually develop something more than just

pure friendship? We hope so! They look super cute together too. The talented 20-year-old took home four trophies including Album of the Year at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards held last month at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. 2010 will be another fantastic year for Tay!or.

Headless and featherless chicken

Big up to Vergina Rockford who sent in an email about KFC chicken being featherless and headless. She wanted some answers on that.

Well, Vergina, after thinking back on the amount of KFC chicken that I’ve eaten all these years, I’m happy to announce…THAT THEY ARE ALL HEADLESS AND FEATHERLESS! I mean, how could we have eaten them otherwise?

“B ing Bing Bing.” The school bell rang, indicating it was time for

class. Alex took the I-pod out of her ears, told her friends later and rushed to class. They were now in grade eight and still in separate classes but Alex didn’t mind anymore, as they would always meet at lunchtime and after school. Also, they all had other friends in their classes so the loneliness faded the more friends they acquired and they didn’t miss each other as much. They became more involved in school. Bridgette was interested in chest and tourism club, Marsha interested in netball and sports in general, Nakita and Alex were interested in Key club, music, dancing and cheerleading…maybe because these were the coolest activities at high school. Soon it was time for Sport Days. On the day of try-outs, Pandora and Alex were in the same group. “Hey, aren’t you too nerdy to try out for cheerleading?” Pandora asked. Alex noticed that Pandora had become mean and saying hurtful things this year. But Pandora didn’t know Alex wasn’t easily intimidated or scared. “Aren’t you a little too big for this sport?” Alex threw back, looking at Pandora’s rear and bosom to emphasize her statement. “They better put you at the bottom of the pyramid or you’ll crush us if they attempt to put you any higher,” Alex added before Pandora could reply. Some girls heard and started laughing. Pandora had a look of lost on her face but only momentarily. “You better bring it or else you’ll regret what you just said for the rest of your high school days,” Pandora shot back. “I already have it brought, you’re the one who has to work for it,” Alex struck hard with her words and rolled her head. Pandora walked away. “That girl is coming out of her shell,” a girl said to another. Alex had no idea they were talking about her. Everyone at primary school knew Alex could dance. She was the head of her cheerleading team at her school and also dance club. No one but her close friends knew that at high school.

As her time came for her tryout, many doubted her. At first, Alex was a bit nervous as so many people who she didn’t know was going to look at her but all that disappeared when her friends came. “You will nail this, you have it lock,” Bridgette said to her, making her laugh with the words she used. Her friends knew her routine and that it was, in Jamaican terms, ‘wicked’. Alex put on her suit and they all laughed as they saw her dressed like a man with her cap turned sideways and baggy jeans but Alex’s confidence was already sky-high and mentally everyone faded. It was just her and the music now. She put in her CD and posed. Everyone got quiet as they saw her posing, wondering if she would ‘flap’. Alex’s friends were smiling widely. Then she gave the go and Bridgette pressed play. It was ‘Upgrade You’ by Beyonce & Jay Z. Alex mouthed Jay-Z’s words and moved like a male. That caught everyone’s attention. Some thought maybe she won’t be that bad after all.

As Beyonce’s part started, she gave a booty pop and then moved her feet to the music. That caught everyone off guard…she wrapped her body around the music. When Beyonce said, “Come and let me upgrade you”, she skillfully pull off her hat and let her hair flow then tore off her loosely fit sweat suit, that she had her mother’s dressmaker make just for this occasion, revealing a sexy cheerleader outfit. She then did hand routines in robot form then flicked, did a fast wine and chunked. People started cheering and whistling. As she split to Beyonce’s line “You need a good woman in your life”, Pandora walked up, switched off the music and said with a sneer, “Okay, save it for Sports Day.” They were still gasping at Alex’s routine and after she walked to the changing room, people came over to her. “Where did you learn to dance?” an older girl asked. “I don’t know,” Alex giggled. Alex was slowly coming out of her trance. For a while, she almost forgot that she was at school and that so many people were scrutinizing or rather praising her. It was like she was home alone in her room. After that outburst of talent, people significantly noticed her. Later she found out that she made the squad, after that she became immensely popular. Life changed once the popularity got more…Alex had no idea what was in store for her…

The Ugly Duckling

– living the modelling dream

TH: What has been your dream?EH: Well, one of my dreams was actually to be a model. I was approached by Saints in third form but had to hold off on a modelling career until I was finished with my external exams. TH: When was your first big fashion show?EH: The end of May last summer. It was style week where we had Fashion Block at Fort Charles on the Saturday and then went to New Kingston on the Sunday. TH: Describe your emotions when walking down the runway.EH: At first I was nervous but as I hit the runway I felt a rush of adrenaline and I remember thinking I don’t want to come off. So basically the nerves disappeared. TH: How do you manage to balance work and school? EH: Saints is an agency that values education and so it wasn’t really a challenge after I was signed. When I am needed for a show I’m called beforehand so I can schedule my time. If I can’t manage to do a show I can simply say no. TH: Does your family support your modelling career?EH: They give me full support but they remind me that it is not a permanent career, which is true. TH: Do you have an alter ego?EH: Really, I’m generally a quiet person but when I walk down the runway I transform into this confident person who demands your attention, so I guess I do. TH: Do you have a stage name?EH: (laughs) no, but I’m working on one. TH: Do you have any regrets? EH: So far no. It’s a great industry and we are like family. TH: Where do you see yourself five years from now?EH: I should be finishing up my degree and have had many fashion shoots, gracing the covers of some top fashion magazines. TH: Word of advice to aspiring models everywhere.EH: It is a very competitive industry, which has its ups and downs. Work hard and if at first you are not accepted by one agency, remember there are several others. Don’t give up and keep focused. Who knows, you could make it on top.

Crush on someone who doesn’t even know I existHi Trish, I am 16, and have a huge crush on this boy who is two years older than I. I presume it’s perfectly normal for a teenager like me to have crushes, but here is the weird thing. I don’t even know why. Seriously, I mean, he doesn’t share any of my interests, doesn’t bother to even listen to my ideas, let alone respect them, isn’t aware of my very existence, and oh yeah, he has a girlfriend. My friends have tried everything to help me, but I am really hung up on him. I think about him every minute and fantasize that we end up together. I am truly disgusted with myself and my performance in class is affected because of this. I don’t know what to do. Please help me get over him!G. J., Portland

Dear G.J., You have low self-esteem and you obviously don’t believe you could attract anyone else so, subconsciously, you hold onto your fantasy with this young man because if you lost the fantasy you would have to actually face your fears about finding someone to love you. Only you can convince yourself you are lovable and worthy of love. You have to keep your distance from this boy and when you find yourself thinking of him take a deep breath and change the thought or use a rubber wrist band that you snap each time you think of him, so the thought association becomes painful rather than pleasurable. You need to lead your own life. Get out there with your friends and try to meet other people. Pursue your hobbies and passions, whether reading, music, dancing, walking, whatever they may be. Work on building your self-esteem by listening to inspirational music and read books on self-confidence. Look after your appearance so you feel good about yourself. If you put the focus on yourself and your life rather than this young man, you will forget him and the right person for you will eventually walk into your life when the right time comes.

17 and never had a boyfriendHi Trish, I am 17 and have never had a boyfriend. I feel very out of place and it really gets me down. The trouble is I am extremely shy and self-conscious, I have tried not to be, but I just can’t seem to change it. There is this boy at school who I really like. I only got to know him a couple of months. He is within my group of friends but we hardly ever speak. We are in one lesson together but sit on opposite sides of the room. We keep making eye contact and I try to smile at him, but he just looks away all the time. I have tried studying his body language and it would suggest he likes me but I am thinking this might be all in my imagination. He is extremely shy when it comes to relationships and I don’t think he has ever had a girlfriend. I don’t know what to do, I would really like to know him better, but am scared that he will laugh or be frightened off. Also, I don’t know how to approach him in person, as he never seems to be on his own. The situation is beginning to affect my concentration levels and moods at school. Please give me some advice.S.M., St. Catherine

Dear S.M., You can ask this boy for his number if he has a phone or you can send him an e-mail explaining how you feel. After that, he will either approach you or ignore you. If he ignores you after receiving the e-mail you will know for sure he is not interested. It will hurt for a while but you will get over it and you won’t have lost through not trying. When you see him in class force yourself to smile at him and look him in the eye for a second before you look away so he knows you like him. Remember, he is shy and you are shy, so if you like each other and one of you doesn’t take the initiative (make the first move), you both lose out. The main thing is for you to work on your confidence so you have an easier time approaching people in all social situations (not just romantic).

With proper care, your teeth and gums can stay healthy throughout your life. The healthier your teeth and gums

are, the less risk you have for tooth decay and gum disease.

How Should I Care for My Teeth and Gums? There are five basic steps to caring for teeth and gums: 1. Brushing 2. Flossing 3. Eating right 4. Visiting the dentist 5. Rinsing

Tips for brushing teethBrush at least twice a day. If you can, brush after every meal. Brushing removes plaque, a film of bacteria that clings to teeth. When bacteria in plaque come into contact with food, they produce acids. These acids lead to cavities. To brush: • Place a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste on the head of the toothbrush. (Use a soft toothbrush.) • Place the toothbrush against the teeth at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. • Move the brush across the teeth using a small circular motion. Continue with this motion cleaning one tooth at a time. Keep the tips of the bristles against the gum line. Avoid pressing so hard that the bristles lie flat against the teeth. (Only the tips of the toothbrush clean the teeth.)

Let the bristles reach into spaces between teeth. • Brush across the top of the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Make sure the bristles get into the groves and crevices. • Use the same small circular motion to clean the backside of the upper and lower teeth -- the side that faces the tongue. • To clean the inside of the bottom front teeth, angle the head in an up-and-down position toward the bottom inside of the mouth and move the toothbrush in a small circle. • For the inside of the top front teeth, angle the brush in an up-and-down position with the tip of the head pointing towards the roof of the mouth. Move the toothbrush in a small circle. • Give your tongue a few gentle brush strokes, brushing from the back of your tongue forward. Do not scrub. This helps remove bacteria and freshens your breath. • After brushing your teeth for two to three minutes, rinse your mouth with water. • Replace your toothbrush with a new one every three to four months.

Tips for flossing your teethFloss teeth once a day. Flossing gets rid of food and plaque between the teeth, where your toothbrush cannot reach. If plaque stays between teeth, it can harden into tartar, which must be removed by a dentist. To floss: • Remove about an 18-inch strip of floss from the dispenser. • Wind the floss around the middle fingers of each hand, leaving a 1-inch section open for

flossing. Floss the top teeth first, then the bottom. • Place the floss in your mouth and use your index fingers to push the floss between the teeth. Be careful not to push too hard and injure the gums. • Move the floss up and down against the tooth and up and around the gum line. The floss should form a C-shape around the tooth as you floss. • Floss between each tooth as well as behind the back teeth. • Use a clean section of floss as needed and take up used floss by winding it around the fingers.

Eating right for dental healthFor good dental health, eat a variety of foods but eat fewer foods that contain sugars and starches. These foods produce the most acids in the mouth and the longer they stay in the mouth, the more they can damage the teeth. Hard “sucking candies” are especially harmful because they stay in the mouth a long time. Snacking on sugary foods can lead to tooth decay because most people don’t brush after snacks. Starchy snack foods, like potato chips, stick to the teeth. Avoid snacking on: • Candies, cookies, cakes and pie • Sugary gum • Crackers, breadsticks and chips • Dried fruits and raisins Visit your dentist regularly

Visit your dentist at least once every six months. To maintain healthy teeth and gums, it’s important to have regular check-ups and professional cleanings. You should also see your dentist if you have pain in your teeth or mouth or bleeding, swollen gums. You can also ask your dentist about dental sealants. Sealant is a material used to coat the top, chewing surfaces of the teeth. This coating protects the tooth from decay and usually lasts a long time.

Tips for rinsingIn addition to the above four steps, antibacterial mouth rinses will reduce bacteria in the mouth that cause plaque and gum disease. Fluoride mouth rinses also help reduce and prevent tooth decay. Fluoride mouth rinses is not recommended for children six or younger because they may swallow the rinse.

The Cadillac SRX is a luxury crossover SUV that has lived two lives. In its first incarnation, the SRX borrowed its rear-wheel-drive underpinnings from the original CTS sport sedan and boasted options like a third-row seat and a V8. In its current form, the SRX is smaller, limited to five seats and V6 power, and it rides on a

front-wheel-drive platform distantly related to the Saturn Vue compact SUV. Like all crossovers, the Cadillac SRX utilizes components and construction more

often associated with cars than trucks, like its Escalade brand mate. The result is a more comfortable ride and better handling, since many consumers don’t need the

tougher, truck-type construction that is advisable for heavy-duty chores such as towing or off-road travel.

The Cadillac SRX small luxury crossover SUV has been redesigned for 2010. A 3.0-liter

V6 is standard with 265 horsepower and 223 pound-feet of torque.

Buyers can also opt for a 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 with 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A six-

speed automatic is standard for both engines. SRXs with the 3.0-liter V6 can be had with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Turbocharged models are AWD only. One of the SRX’s most appealing traits

is its healthy roster of standard equipment. There

are four available trim levels for the new SRX: base, Luxury Collection,

Performance Collection and Premium Collection. Even the base model comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, a power driver seat, 60/40-split-folding and reclining rear

seatbacks, dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-speaker Bose sound system. Higher trim levels tack on almost every conceivable luxury, including a sunroof, a power liftgate, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, xenon headlamps and a hard-drive-based navigation system with a back-up camera. High-end all-wheel-drive models (including all turbocharged SRXs) also receive a sport-tuned suspension with continuously variable damping. The base SRX simply can’t keep up with most competing crossovers in a straight line. It’s heavy – a front-wheel-drive SRX weighs as much as its all-wheel-drive rivals – and the 3.0-liter V6 doesn’t have enough juice to pull the SRX around with any authority. The turbocharged motor helps considerably, thanks in large part to its ample low-end torque. On the positive side, the SRX boasts confident and capable handling and a high-quality interior that’s notably quiet at freeway speeds.

When an officer says, “Gee son, your eyes look red. Have you been drinking?” You probably shouldn’t respond with, “Gee officer, your eyes look glazed. Have you

been eating doughnuts?”

Melanie asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn’t remember any more.

Melanie said, “If you don’t remember you must look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six.”

A teen is riding the subway home from work and there is a gorgeous blond girl sitting across the aisle from him. He keeps checking her out, but lacks the nerve to talk to her. Suddenly she sneezes and her glass eye comes flying out of its

socket towards him. He reflexively grabs and snatches it out of the air. “Oh my, I am sooo sorry,” the girl says as she pops her eye back into place.

“Let me buy you dinner to make it up to you.” They enjoy a wonderful dinner together and afterwards the girl invites him to go with her to a movie. She pays for everything, including a taxicab ride for the

two of them to her house. She kisses him goodnight at her door, and asks him if he would like to come to

breakfast the next morning. When he arrives the next morning, she has cooked a gourmet meal with all the

trimmings. The guy is amazed!! “You know, you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to

every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.”

On the heels of the centennial staging of what has become Jamaica’s pride and joy

(Boys & Girls Champs), it seems as if there are those among us who are determined to literally sabotage their own. There is no doubt that discipline needs to be maintained, especially amongst our young men, but when the captain of the track team is being suspended on the grounds of his pants being too tight, and students who are preparing for CXC exams are being suspended for ten days for revealing white tank tops under their uniform shirts, and others are being taken out of class all day for issues that should be secondary when it comes to preparation for final exams, such behaviour have left parents fuming. “Mr. Cross (Jamaica College’s dean of discipline) is taking things out of proportion,” says one irate parent. “This is not about challenging his authority, but at the same time, the question that needs to be asked is, do we sacrifice the future of our young men based on frivolous issues?” The grievances are mounting, and the parents are complaining. “We all respect what Mr. Ruel Reid (former JTA’s President and now JC’s Principal) is attempting to achieve,” states another mother, whose son was taken out of class for two days based upon an accusation that later proved to be

futile. “But Mr. Cross’ actions are risky,” she continues. “How can you suspend a student who is preparing for CXCs for ten days, for revealing a white tank top under his uniform shirt, how is he suppose to catch up, and how can you suspend the track team’s captain for his pants being too tight, couldn’t you have given him a warming?” The track team captain of many-time boys’ champions Jamaica College (JC), Waquar DaCosta, is not only a national junior representative, but is also a point man and middle-distance ‘hero’. He was allegedly suspended for his pants being too tight, an issue that many believe could have been resolved without being so detrimental. “I am a disciplinarian myself,” states another

parent, “but apart from the Dean being new, I think he is acting a little too draconian, without any thought when it comes to the bigger picture. I mean, Waquar could be the next Usain Bolt, and what, we sacrifice that, and at the same time, does JC not care, not only about a potential future track star, but also about the future of our young men?” Similar sentiments resonate amongst all the parents who have had to deal with Jamaica College’s new dean of discipline, Mr. Cross, and some are even talking about taking the issue to the Ministry Of Education if they cannot get any justice at the school’s administrative level, with the main undertone being: should the future of students be sacrificed under the guise of discipline, especially when the issues in question so far all seem to be frivolous?

Organizers of the 34th annual Gibson Relays are reporting that World 800m record holder, Wilson Kipketer of Denmark will be the guest lecturer in

the technical corner for the relay party set for the National Stadium on February 27. The native Kenyan, who retired from active competition in August 2005 currently holds eight of the 11 all-time fastest runs over 800 metres. He will arrive in the island on February 23, following which he will address athletes at the G.C. Foster College. Chairman of the organizing committee Neville ‘Teddy’ McCook said they were trying to get Kipketer, from last year’s relays, as the president of the JAAA had indicated to them that they wanted to develop middle and long distance running. “I think that we have a responsibility to assist in this direction and felt that we could get Kipketer here, “McCook said. Athletes from at least seven countries including Martinique, Canada, Cayman Islands,

Netherlands Antilles, Cuba and Guadeloupe are expected to participate in this year’s relays. McCook disclosed during the launch at the Knutsford Court Hotel that athletes from North America and the Caribbean have indicated an interest in competing at Jamaica’s biggest relay meet. McCook noted that athletes from Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Gambia, who currently trains at the IAAF High Performance Centre at the University of West Indies, Mona Campus, will also participate at the meet. Thirty-two relay events are on the schedule along with six individual events including the men and women sprint hurdles and high jump. “We have three or four hurdles up there at this point in time, and so that event will be strengthened this year at the Gibson Relays,” he said. The Gatorade record breakers series will again be a feature of the relays with a total prize pool of five hundred thousand dollars.
