Surveying Surveying offers significant opportunities for young people looking for a diverse and varied career. As McCrindle research* found in 2013, surveying graduates are more likely to secure real jobs in surveying compared with many other professions. An average of 90% of graduates in full-time employment earn a median starting salary of $52,000.

Surveyors work both indoors and out, taking precise measurements using specialised technology in the field, then analysing and interpreting the results back in the office. They also work on a wide range of projects and locations – with no two jobs the same, thus adding variety and adventure to their daily work.

Surveying is no longer considered a gender specific career. Female students may be particularly interested in aerial surveys by quadcopter (drone), 3D modelling and the management of spatial data.

Student Identifiers Scheme – Legislation passes The Minister for Industry, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, has announced the passage of the Student Identifiers Act 2014 through the Senate.

Passage of the Bill confirms the 1 January 2015 start date for the Unique Student Identifier (USI) scheme.

The USI scheme will provide a national online authenticated record of students’ training attainment and will serve as a building block for a range of vocational education and training reforms.

Students, industry, training providers and governments will benefit from the scheme, which will streamline access to, and exchange of student training records.

Over time, the ability of students to access and share their training records will make enrolment processes more efficient for training providers and students. Training providers will have access to an online information source to manage student transfers between training providers, and the assessment of credit transfer and pre-requisites. For more information on the USI, visit the Department of Industry’s website here.
